Robert could see what I wanted and gave a fair estimate. When he did the work, he not only did everything I needed, he even tightened some of the hangars on the extisting gutters and patched a hole in the porch trim without charging extra. Very professional and easy to work with.
Description of Work: I needed some repairs done to the soffits and fascia and a new gutter and downspout installed on one side of the house I just purchased.

Response from Silver Hammer Construction
In deed an appointment mistake was made with respect to the Member. When discussing the day, date, and times available, there was a three day window option in which to chose, as well as various times. My understanding of the selected date was clearly not the same as the Member's, thus I had him down for a date different than he anticipated. When he called to check on my arrival, I indicated that I had him scheduled for another day, apolgized for my mistake, and offered to re-book a day, date, and time that would best fit his schedule. He chose to pick the day, date, and time that I originally had him scheduled for, and that appointment was honored by me as agreed. As far as the estimate visit is concerned, the following are the factors in what turned out to be the final cost estimate. We reviewed each room during my hour long visit. Three bedrooms, a full bath, stairwell, laundry room, and large second floor hallway. The scope of the job was to include the drywall repair in each room as needed. (each room having numerous ceiling and wall nail pops, several wall board cut-outs would need to be patched, as well as some water staining would need to be addressed. In addition, in the laundry room, the washer and dryer would need to be diconnected, and moved out of the room. The customer requested repairs to a dryer vent exhaust pipe, and a washing machine floor drain. Of the bedrooms reviewed, one or more had an existing color that would require not only two coats of finish paint (standard), but also a primer coat. Furthermore, each room had large furniture that not only would have to be covered of course, but moved back and forth to allow us access to paint the walls. Empty room painting vs. furniture moving/removing will add some expense to the final cost. Painting of walls and ceilings were estimated. The final cost estimate of was arrived at by size of the rooms, drywall repair, ( extra trip(s) for dry time of drywall repairs, extra prime coats, and other various repairs requested by customer). It was determined that the job would take approximatelt 3/4 days to complete. I appreciate the opportunity to bid the Member's job, and I again aplogize for any inconveinence the scheduling mistake might have caused. As to the final estimate. I considered it to be fair and reasonable. There's an old saying in business. "Quality will long be remember, after price is quickly forgotten". Thank You

I tried having this company come out to help w/ the above projects, yet they never returned my initial email or follow-up voicemail. Even if they weren't interested or had time for my projects, they could have at least responded and let me know that.

Robert is a skilled professional and it was a pleasure to work with him and his team. Some specifics: 1) It was hard to find a company who would demolish an old deck and remove all the debris. Robert agreed to do the job. 2) He listened to the reason behind the demolition and proposed using concrete board to build out the bay window. 3) He was thorough and careful in explaining the issues and in going through the contract. He and his foreman visited the job site before the job started to plan it right. 4) He visited his crew and checked up on the progress during the day and at night to survey the job site. 5) He was willing to work on the weekends to finish the job. 6) When problems arose (e.g. not knowing which wires were used for the outside lighting), he persisted in finding the solution. 7) When the job expanded (e.g. repairing a broken pipe, patching holes and caulking), Robert was willing to do the extra work. 8) Robert was patient with explaining the issues and answering our many questions. 9) His prices were reasonable and negotiated ahead of time, so there were no surprises. Overall, this was a very pleasant experience dealing with Robert and his team.
Description of Work: 1) An old deck was demolished and the wood and the rocks/stones under it were removed. 2) A bay window was built out, using concrete board, and sealed. 3) New steps were constructed for a screened-in room. 4) The ground under the old deck was prepared and new top soil put down. 5) Wiring going out of the house was capped. 6) Holes in the siding were patched. 7) A broken frost-free sillcock was replaced. 8) Window wells and other areas were caulked.

As stated above, Robert was scheduled to remove paneling and paint family room walls. However, as he proceeded to complete the job, he encountered other issues that needed to be addressed and he resolved them immediately: While completing the original work he was contracted for (walls) he identified a stain on the ceiling (mold) that had apparently seeped through the attic from the roof. He then checked the roof and found some missing and damaged cauking that was the cause of this problem. Before painting the new surfaces he repaired and replaced the cauking along the entire roof line. Then, as he was checking the roof he also identified another potential problem with gutters (that I was aware of but had merely tabled for later) and made some recommendations. Something I was extremely grateful for. Not only was I pleased with the work Robert completed, but I have contracted with him to do several other "updating" jobs I need done. He and his crew go way beyond the norm to get the job done right. I would sooo recommend him.
Description of Work: I needed to have paneling removed from walls in family room and the surfaces painted. One of the walls had a cathedral ceiliing that butted up to large wooden beams across the ceiling and required some expert handling to be done correctly. They carefully removed trim so that it could be reused, and proceeded to work on carefully removing the paneling from the walls in hopes of saving the existing drywall. However, when they removed the paneling it was determined that the drywall could not be repaired but rather had to be replaced. After discussing our options, Robert called in a crew of men who completed the required drywall replacement in one day. They then had to prime and paint the new walls with two coats of paint. After the paint had dried over night, Robert felt the high wall still needed a third coat of paint and returned to complete the work. Walls are beautiful!

Rob was excellent, prompt, and cost efficient. I was happy with his work and have him scheduled for more jobs. Highly recommended.
Description of Work: drywall repair in basement as well as door hung in the screened porch.
Robert and his crew were consummate professionals throughout the process; he was the first of several contractors we contacted to respond, and quickly fit us into his schedule for a survey and estimate. He and his team arrived promptly at the time promised, and kept us regularly posted as their work progressed. They worked efficiently and completed all work within 3 days, as projected in the original estimate.
Description of Work: We hired Robert and his team to repair a large crack that had begun to develop in a bedroom ceiling. The severity of the crack required the replacement of the the entire ceiling's drywall, and repainting of the room. We asked Robert to also install ceiling fans in this and two other rooms, and install new wall electrical switches to operate room lights/fans. While Robert was in our attic, he pointed out a few other issues that needed attention, including a broken attic fan and section of exhaust pipe that had rusted through and needed replacement.

When I called for an estimate, he called me back that evening, and scheduled to come the next day to give us an estimate. That estimate was promptly given the next day. I had some time constraints, and he was very accomidating about getting the work started and finished ahead of schedule. The work done is described above. Robert and his employees were informative and professional. Robert was on time when he said he would be here. Once, he did call me to say that the traffic was delaying his arrival. I appreciated that, as many people would not have bothered to do so. He was pleasant to talk with and is a hard worker. I am more than satisfied with the quality of his work. The company is: Silver Hammer Home Services28w770 Calumet Ave.Warrenville, IL 60555630-740-8323 www.silverhammerhomeservices.comServes All of DuPage County
Description of Work: We had a sagging ceiling which easily could have fallen on us in the bedroom. This was due to builder error in 1976, and the builder went bankrupt many years ago. The ceiling needed to come down along with the insulation, and be replaced. He also skimcoated a hallway ceiling which had the "popcorn" texture removed. He removed the lighted ceiling fan from the ceiling prior to beginning work. He did the same in the hallway. The existing bedroom ceiling and insulation were removed. As he was pulling a piece down, the rest of it actually did fall down. He took care of disposal of the old drywall. New drywall was installed and the insulation was replaced. The drywall was "mudded" and sanded after sufficient drying time. The ceilings in the bedroom and hallway were primed as well. He even did some patching of some holes in the walls. All in all, the work was completed in about 3 and a half days, and from what I can see, the quality of the work done is excellent.

Previously scheduled customer's job ran over by several hours because of complications with the work. I did call this client twice to notify him of our schedule change. He indicated that all was well, and he would be home all day. We worked on his job which became more complicated, until 8:00 p.m.and returned the following day to finish some details.
They are very good at what they do. They are very reliable. We have had them here a couple of times and we've never had any problems. They are coming back at the end of the month to do more work for me. We got other quotes and they were the best. We have had to change a couple dates because of other jobs he was doing. When he says he is going to be here, he is here.

I had used Silver Hammer once before for a bigger project. The experience was good enough I thought to call for just some handyman services. The company's owner, Robert, is always very responsive to phone calls. He called me back later the same day and arranged to come over within a few days. He went through the tasks and took a few minutes to give me a price. He broke down the work so I could have chosen to do less than all of the work. The price was reasonable, and I agreed to the contract. Robert was able to stay and take care of the work that same day. He was diligent and was careful to contain the mess when he was patching the drywall. After he was finished, he cleaned up thoroughly. I had one additional question about a lock in my house, which Robert checked out and gave me his opinion on. I would definitely recommend Silver Hammer. The work is quality, the price reasonable, and the owner reliable.

I had several minor jobs in my home in need of repair. After subscribing to Angie's List (Tuesday 10/4) and reviewing several companies, I settled on hiring Silver Hammer to complete the minor jobs, since they had an A+ rating/reviews. On Tuesday evening I spoke with Robert about the jobs I had. He not only explained what he thought might be the problem and what that would entail, but he also gave me an estimate over the phone, which was quite reasonable. He arrived promptly at 7:15am on Wednesday morning and began to work. In total, the 5 jobs took about 2-2.5 hours. Robert also took the time to explain in detail how certain problems occurred, including pointing-out that the original contractor/plumber used wall insulation under the Master Bath toilet instead of a standard wax ring?!?!. The use of wall insulation under the toilet caused the rocking motion and leakage. This could have been quite disastrous and expensive problem including the bathrooms' ceramic tile, not to mention leakage into the living room below. Whew! He also explained that I need additional work on the kitchen sink (approximately $65) worth of applying clamps to properly hold the sink to the counter top. Although he could not fix the door bell because it simply needed to be replaced, he did a fantastic job. He was somewhat courteous ("Calm Down" comment notwithstanding, when asked if the toilet still would rock). Nevertheless, I would recommend using Silver Hammer's services and will use them for additional handy work in the future.
Description of Work: Rocking (2nd Floor) toilet (leaking and in need of wax ring and caulking) $85; 1st floor toilet flush complete only when handle held for several seconds $20; Leaking pipe under kitchen sink $20; 2nd story window shutter reattached to window $20 and door bell wouldn't ring properly (couldn't fix need new doorbell).

As the service rep on site of this particular job, I appreciate the member's positive comments and observations. It was a pleasure to be able to repair the problems in her home. As to her comment of my remark to "Calm Down". This was said in humor, and not disrespect. I had not quite finished the toilet reset, and the member commented on whether is was still going to rock. I jokingly replied " Calm Down" we're getting there. Anyway, I guess the moral of the story is that one must consider what they say , even if done in humor, because not everyone will appreciate the humor or realize it was said with that in mind. Again, thank you for the business, and we hope to serve you again in the future.

Robert, the owner, called me back and set up a date to come over to see the projects that needed to be completed. He was accomodating in that I wanted everything separately itemized to determine what I wanted done. He carefully looked at each problem and took down notes and then sent me a quote within a week. The quote came in at a price that I thought was fair, although not less than what it should be. I decided to hire Silver Hammer in part because of good reviews on Angie's list and in part because Robert seemed like he was creative with solving problems. Because the condo is in an old building, there were some unusual problems that needed to be addressed. Robert and one other worker started the work for me about 2 weeks after I agreed to the proposal. They came on time, worked hard, and completed the job in just a few hours more than 4 days. Both men were friendly and easy to work with. When problems arose, Robert stayed calm and took care of them, using some ingenuity to solve the problem. All the work was performed to my satisfaction. I felt the workmanship was good to very good. In particular, Robert dealt with a drywall problem that occurred because two walls were not plumb. One wall actually took about a 45 degree turn in order to meet the other wall in the corner. Robert worked at the wall over several days, and the final result was impressive. If there is any criticism, it is that the carpets and cabinets could have been tarped better so that less dust and patching compund got on them. But, they did a really good job of cleaning up before finalizing the project. Overall, I was very pleased and would use them again. Given some of the problems that needed to be addressed, I ended up feeling that athe price was more than fair.
Description of Work: I called Silver Hammer for an estimate to do a variety of small jobs to ready a condo for sale. The work included some small drywall work, putting up several new fixtures, adding electrical outlets, and patching and painting a bathroom and a bedroom closet. They demolished the existing countertops, sink and faucet and put in new ones. Additionally, several shelves and a shelving unit had to be torn out and the walls patched and painted. Silver Hammer took down a medicine cabinet and replaced it with a mirror. New towel racks and shower head were put in. They also added a sweep to the bottom of a door and a toe kick under the kitchen cabinets. One set of upper cabinets needed to be removed and reattached to the wall more securely. A small amount of wallpaper had to be taken down in the bathroom and kitchen.

I worry about this sort of work, (just like car mechanics) that I will be spoken to in a language I do not understand. I am a smart woman, but I just want it given to me straight. That is exactly how i received my estimate as he walked me through the repairs and gave me my options. I was limited on budget so he found me a budget solution that wasn't cheap work. That included re-using the siding, so he was sure to remove them with care. I was happy with his professionalism and his knowledge and will definitely be calling him again for more work.
Description of Work: I had a hole in my soffit leading to my attic that allowed squirrels to come in. They also may have torn my gutters as they were hanging off the house. I had to have the siding moved out of the way, the wood replaced and the same siding put back (that was my choice to reuse the same siding.)
