About us

Sutton Roofing & Siding was started in 1946 by Edsel & Mayme Sutton in Springfield Illinois. Edsel sold the work and Mayme ran the business. They had an installer and focused solely on Roofing and Siding. In those days, there were only a handful of colors to offer customers. The Sutton’s prided themselves on using the highest quality materials and installation available. Then, they put their name on it and offered a guarantee. A handful of the projects they did in those early days can still be seen on homes in the older areas of Springfield today. In the late 1970's, Douglas Sutton moved back to Springfield and took over the family business for his parents, Edsel and Mayme. He changed the name to reflect the expanded remodeling services. The new name was Sutton Siding & Remodeling, Inc. A marketing partner of Doug's was responsible for one of the most successful marketing campaigns in Springfield. Sutton Siding & Remodeling adopted the slogan, ""You call us, we don't call you."" That is because some key competitors at the time were dialing for dollars every evening and on weekends bothering people for appointments. The slogan worked and separated Sutton's from the vultures lurking on the phone. People still refer to that slogan today and refer to Sutton’s as simply “Sutton Siding.” Fast forward to 1995 and Douglas Sutton Jr, along with his brother Michael Sutton, took over the family business. Eventually, the duo decided to change the name to simply ""Sutton's."" The pair added a property restoration division and is recognizing a need in the marketplace to help customers after a fire or storm damage. Together, the brothers still operate the business in partnership and work in the business every day in the same office on Peoria Road on Springfield’s north side. Sutton’s has three distinct divisions. They are Exteriors, Remodeling, and Service. Sutton’s started as a Roofing and Siding company and is still the largest Roofing & Siding Company in central Illinois.

The sutton came out one time and he actually climbed up there and put the shingles back on for free. He was just a nice guy. But, he was a couple of thousand higher than the guy that I hired for the roofing.

the job went really. Since I was coming from out of town, they made and appointment and met me in order to gather data for the estimate. Getting the estimate took a little while since we were exchanging information via phone calls and e-mail. I don't consider that a problem. Once we got the contracts signed the roof got done very quickly. The rest of the job was done in a timely manner, we delayed it a few days since I had to clear my schedule to be in town and let thme in. This was my problem, not theirs. The work was done quickly and professionally. This company had done lots of work on the house before we inherited it. This was the reason we originally picked them, but we would be happy to use them again based on the quality of their work,

Sutton's was very professional. I called, made an appointment, and although the person scheduled to come out and give the estimate was unavailable on the scheduled time, Sutton's called me and arranged for another of their contractors to come out at the original time. The contractor who arrived was knowledgeable in general, but did say some of my questions would have to be addressed by the person writing up the formal estimate. I was told I'd have the formal estimate in about a week, and I did. Unfortunately, it was significantly overpriced in my opinion. Sutton's was not the only contractor we contacted to provide an estimate, and they were neither the most nor the least expensive. There was nothing in our experience with Sutton's that made us think we would be poorly served by them, aside from the too high price, but one of the contractors we got a bid from really stood out as exemplary and was who we ultimately went with. We did not regret our decision, and would be unlikely to ask Sutton's to come out and bid our next job (which will be siding) because we would expect them to be similarly overpriced.

The salesman was punctual and professional. He had an estimate for me in a timely manner. Whenever I contact him, he returns my calls promptly. The workers were respectful, skilled and professional. After the job was complete, they inspected the work and made sure I was happy with the outcome. GREAT COMPANY!
Description of Work: Sutton's put a new roof on my house and put new windows in. The window installers were fast, friendly and professional. The roof work was truly amazing. A team of roofers descended on my house at 7:00 a.m. and by 5:00 the following day, the job was done. They had to tear off 4 layers of roofing and deal with a steep pitch and still, they finished in 48 hours and did a great job!

We did not use Suttons. After many discussions we solved the problem differently. However, I would not hesitate to call them in the future. I have used them in the past and been happy with their work.
Description of Work: I was questioning the gutter in the back of my house When it rained it rained over the top and out the side. We were wondering if the size in relation to the water draining off were disproportionate.Jim gave us an estimate.He was prompt. As always he is careful not to be making the project bigger than it has to be. I have used Jim several times over the years.

Work went realy good, person who was doing the work new what he was doing and had the tools and materials he need with him so the only time he needed to stop was for lunck finished everything but spraying ceiling in one day. Was there early the next day taped and sprayed. His cleanup both days was really good better than I would of done. Was a very nice guy when I had to talk to him. He is very good at what he does.
Description of Work: Fixed garage enter door. Repair hole in drywall in ceiling of garage and repair drywall around door that was fixed. Fix corner of drywall that was hit by car in garage.

We chose another company based on price. Sutton's estimate was waaaaaaay over our budget.
Description of Work: Sutton's was very prompt in responding to our initial inquiry. They provided us with a very professional looking bid accompanied by a spiral bound book outlining every aspect of their company, products used, warranty info, copies of license and insurance, etc. Their salesman was quite friendly as well. The only thing we weren't crazy about was the amount of time it took for the salesman to present their bid. He literally went through EVERY single page of their book and explained all the printed information in extensive detail. While that may be very impressive to many folks, we thought it was unnecessary and quite time consuming. A couple times we interrupted and said we'd be happy to just read the book on our own time, but the salesman continued talking anyway. We had several other contractors coming out that same day to bid on the project and while we had scheduled the appointments far apart from one another, we were afraid Sutton's salesman would still be here when the next contractor showed up. All in all, Sutton's sales rep was here for well over an hour talking non-stop. But like I said, he was a nice guy...just very talkative.

Yes, we do require our sales reps to take the time with customers. We are not the type of contractor that leaves a price on a piece of paper with a business card. I was very please with the entire process.
Description of Work: First I only put Good on the Quality because it hasn't rained to know that the reason for the roof was solved.I have dealt with Suttons in the past as well as for this situation and I have found them to be prompt and fair about their costs. One person in particular has been my contact and performed the work in a variety of situations over the years and I have always found him to be helpful in making suggestions on the repairs offering options to think about. Because this was a roof, on his initial visit to give an estimate he provided photos for me explaining why the situation was happening. I appreciated that he made sure the repair was scheduled promptly and that he was here for the apt. I would use this company again.

I have a new roof. That's the best of it. In the beginning when they did the tear off, they found more layers than what was quoted and were ready to charge a nice chunk more. Since I had no idea it was like that, my friend talked them in to not charging me more for it. They did a nice job on the shingled part of the roof, but they put the wrong color on. Of course it was practically done by the time I got home and noticed it. They took $500 off of my bill, but I'm sure it would've cost A LOT more if I'd made them remove it all and put the correct color on. While they were putting the rubber on the flat roof, same friend went up to see how they were doing and found they were not replacing the studs & plywood when it was obvious these needed to be replaced... plus they were throwing their trash down under the flat roof and roofing over it. Then a few years later I noticed mold growing on the underside of the flat roof, so I called them. They came out and inspected and found the rubber roof had not been sealed. They first wanted to charge me because it had been so long, but then realized I couldn't have known about this problem and they did the repair no cost. So they do good work, but watch out for everything and don't let them take advantage of you.

As Member indicates, there was a tornado on March 12th, 2006. Two tornadoes ripped through Springfield IL, doing over $100 million worth of damage to private property alone. That figure doesn't include the businesses and community property that was damaged or destroyed. Yes, we learned a lot as a company that year. Our volume of work nearly tripled as we were scrambling to help everyone who called by providing emergency temp repairs so that their homes would not be further damaged. The member is correct when she says that she was not handled as promptly as she should have been in normal circumstances. She does correctly identify that we got out to her home to address the immediate damage and secure her property. Here are some of the points that the member brings up in her report. 1) As for the layers on the roof. We did inspect the roof, as did her insurance adjuster. Both the estimator and the adjuster didn’t see the layer in question. In most cases, you are not allowed to put a third (or more) layer on any roof as that would constitute a code violation. Naturally when you do more work, you need to charge more. That is clearly stated in the contract that the member signed. We did not charge her more for work we deserved to be paid more on, she is correct. 2) As for the shingle colors, the member signed a selection agreement on 8/11/2006 that says “Fox Hollow Grey.” We have her signature. She then signed another selection agreement on 8/15/2006 that says “Pewter Grey.” In her report, she states that the wrong color was being installed when actually, it was the right color and she wanted to change the shade. Again, we did what she requested. She is correct. 3) The claims of stuffing trash underneath a roof are unsubstantiated. There is nothing in our records to indicate that this actually happened. Had we found one of our employees doing something like this, that employee would have been relieved of duty on the spot. 4)As for the decking, on a contract signed by the member on 8/11/2006, it states clearly on line #2 to “inspect all decking and replace any bad sheets at an additional cost of $1.65 per square foot, material and labor.” Again, yes, we did need to charge her extra. To assume that you can estimate rotten decking when the roof is covered with multiple layers is absurd. That is why we clearly state that fact in our contract and we ask for consent before we start replacing the sheathing. 5) She is correct when she says that the flat roof portion of the job was not covered under warranty and that she was approached about paying for the repairs. At the time, Sutton’s had a one year workmanship guarantee. She had called after that time had expired. In 2010, Sutton’s adopted a five-year workmanship guarantee. That new extended workmanship guarantee is in place today. We received the final payment two months after the roof was complete. We are glad that the member sees the quality in the final results and we wish her well.

I contacted Sutton through Angie's List, and they contacted me the next day to make an appointment for an estimate. We made an appointment for that Friday at 1pm. Sutton called me at 10:30am on Friday and said they needed to reschedule. We set the next appointment for noon on Monday. The sales consultant Tom was professional and personable. He got up on my roof, took measurements, and made a detailed diagram of my roof. He asked if I wanted him to complete the estimate while he was there, and I said yes. He calculated numbers on a worksheet for awhile. When he was done, I was surprised to see that all he showed me was the total estimate amount on a piece of yellow legal paper. As I had already gotten other estimates, I needed a more detailed estimate to compare to the others. I asked him for the "squares" he measured and he wrote that down for me. Then I asked for the price of the sheathing and chimney repair broken out and he wrote that down for me as well. I would have preferred an estimate on company letterhead with a detailed description of what would be included from start to finish including material and labor details. The prior two estimates were computerized and more detailed. Ultimately, I ruled out Sutton based on their price. The estimate was the highest of the five I obtained and $2,000 more than the company I chose to work with. Tom explained some of their employment practices and other business policies which would result in a higher cost of doing business, but I just couldn't afford the high estimate. Tom talked to me and answered my questions for over an hour. He left copies of their insurance policy, license information, and other things. He also left brochures of the company they use for their shingles and other materials, which is GAF. He talked alot about the GAF company, their warranty information, and the quality of their shingles. As every company I talked to praised their shingles as "the best", you need do your own research into them as well. Tom claimed they could provide a 50 year warranty on labor and materials as they are a Master Elite with GAF. I don't really expect to live in my house more than 10 more years, and I think most roofs would probably be replaced before 30 years anyway, so 50 years is not a significant selling point to me. Overall, Sutton seemed to really have a "sales" approach which focused on the GAF product /warranty and their business practices. It was a little too impersonal and too expensive for me.
Description of Work: I received an estimate for a complete roof replacement, and while the salesman was here I got an estimate for a single replacement window as well.

We are happy that the member secured a contractor that she feels more comfortable with. I would like to take this opportunity to clear up a few of the items that she pointed out. 1) She did not call us. She requested an estimate through Angie's List. She did not provide us with a phone number, only an email address. We had to request the phone number via email. We did respond to the email through Angie's list within one hour. As far as changing the appointment, her estimator had an emergency pop up that needed his attention. We keep phone records here at Sutton's. He did call her to ask if rescheduling would be an option. She agreed. Had she said it was a problem, we would have reassigned the appointment to another estimator with no questions asked. 2) She paid nothing for the estimate. As she herself indicated, we answered all of her questions. One of the items that the member has wrong is the "sales approach." Her estimator was there to take picture, take measurements, and make a diagram. He had every intention of coming back with the professional presentation that she mentions and giving her options. He wrote it out on the spot because that is what she requested once he was there. 3) We are a Master Elite Contractor with GAF. That is a distinction that less than 2% of the roofing contractors achieve nationwide. We are very proud of that. Part of that distinction is being able to offer a 50-year warranty on the shingle, and 25 years on the workmanship. Whether she was going to stay one year or ten has no relevance, as this is a transferable warranty, which adds value to the home when she does sell it. The member did indicate her personal thoughts on the roofing industry as a whole after having had a relationship with one of our direct competitors. Her comment was "a roofer is a roofer." We view that differently of course. We regret not meeting her expectations. We do stand firm on the fact that we deliver a superior products, an unbeatable warranty, while maintaining all of the proper licenses and insurance coverage’s needed to properly run our business. We have employees do the work. We do not use sub contractors for roofing. Thank you.

Estimator arrived on 04/02/2012 to perform an evaluation of our roofing needs, including a roof tear-off, refurbishing of box gutters, and possible repair of two chimneys. I contacted him by phone later that week for an update on the estimate and was told he was consulting someone about a portion of the roof repair. Two weeks later, I contacted him again by phone about the estimate and was told that he would call me later that day with the estimate or send it in the mail. Three-plus weeks later, I have received neither a phone call nor estimate in the mail. I have since received three estimates from reputable companies and have signed a contract with one of them. This has been a truly disappointing experience with Sutton's that was unexpected, given the mostly favorable reviews on Angie's List and their TV commercial hype ("you call us, we don't call you"). That's right, they don't call you.

The company representative was very helpful. We explained our house is in a small town about an hour's drive south of Springfield and asked about the travel expenses in order to do the work here. It was clearly explained that any cost incurred in travel to give an in-person estimate would be waived, if the company was selected to do the work. Within two days, the person who was scheduled to do the estimate, called to confirm the details. We decided that with the cost of gasoline continuning to rise and taking a toll on our discretionary budget, we could postpone the "wish list" items for a while longer. The company's estimator was very pleasant and accepted this cancellation without any pressure. We appreciate good telephone communication that recognizes the value of potential customer's initial impression of a company by their interaction with it's employees. We appreciate the courtesy and consideration given to our inquiry and decision. We would recommend this company .

Called and asked told receptionist that I had several home repairs that I needed done. She tranferred me to Jim in the handyman division and I related what I needed done and set up a date and time for them to be completed. The carpentry perso arrived on time and went over the work requested. He did the work well and cleaned up the debris which was hauled away. When he finished, he asked me if it was completed as I wanted and also if they was anything else I needed completed. I was very pleased with the serive and the price was fair.
Description of Work: Handyman did door repairs on back porch (including replacing a storm door), front door weathrstripping, gutter and downspout repairs and minor carpentry work.

My small interior remodeling project was done when they said it would be completed. A delay in completing since some special items were ordered for my job. They called when they received the items and we setup a date for completing. Went smoothly and they even cleaned up each day when they were done. Price was competitive. My rental roofing project was completed before the interior remodeling project since it needed to be done to keep from causing damage inside the house. This was completed and looks great. No leaks. I was very satisfied with the work performed - they did what they said and checked with me to make sure everything was completed as I requested. Martha M Sutton
Description of Work: Needed to have some general remodeling work - they had their handyman service handle the work I wanted completed. They came out when requested,, measured and gave me a quote (in writing). They completed it when they said since they had to order some special materials. I also needed some roofing work done on a rental property. They also gave me a brochure on avoiding fraud which I signed and they left a copy for my records. Took three days to get an estimator out to the house and then another three days for an estimate to be made available. Salesman provided some decent promotional materials for the products they wanted to use - but I had to really question their overall knowledge when they misidentified my existing siding as aluminum instead of vinyl. Overall bid was about $2,500 higher than competitors though the salesman insisted that the price reflected higher quality materials, better workmanship, and more professional service (background checks on all workers, cleaning the worksite of debris, etc). I wasn't convinced and decided to go with another company.

The member is skipping some key details in his report. We keep records on all of our appointments and after reviewing his, here is what we have recorded. 1. The member called on 5/16/11 and his appointment scheduled for 5/18/11 at 3:00pm. (two days, not three as he indicated. Two days is a reasonable amount of time to set an appointment.) 2. The member called for a "roofing" quote, not siding. He indicated that he wanted siding after we arrived for the roofing quote. We have different sales reps that handle different products. The sales rep that was at the appointment has ten years of experience and hundreds of happy clients. We are confident that the rep that was at the appointment knows the difference between aluminum and vinyl siding. This is a misrepresentation on the part of the member. 3. The member hired a competitor for $2000 less, not $2500 as stated. The contractor he hired is not a Master Elite contractor and can not provide him with a 25 year full coverage warranty. (GAF Golden Pledge) That warranty coupled with the actual materials and components used represented the $2000 difference. Anytime you are not comparing like products there will be a price difference. This too is a misrepresentation by the member. 4. The member stated to our sales rep that he would "still like to have you guys do the siding." For him to post comments like this when we didn't do any work for him is completely unfounded. We wish the member the best in the future.

The workers were very professional and helpful. I'm not just saying that. They were great. If I had any other remodeling needs, I would definitely use them. The flooring was nice, and if I noticed anything that might be wrong, they fixed it immediately. They showed up on time and I believe they went beyond the call of duty.
Description of Work: They remodeled my entire downstairs. Kitchen, bathroom, flooring throughout.
