About us

Sutton Roofing & Siding was started in 1946 by Edsel & Mayme Sutton in Springfield Illinois. Edsel sold the work and Mayme ran the business. They had an installer and focused solely on Roofing and Siding. In those days, there were only a handful of colors to offer customers. The Sutton’s prided themselves on using the highest quality materials and installation available. Then, they put their name on it and offered a guarantee. A handful of the projects they did in those early days can still be seen on homes in the older areas of Springfield today. In the late 1970's, Douglas Sutton moved back to Springfield and took over the family business for his parents, Edsel and Mayme. He changed the name to reflect the expanded remodeling services. The new name was Sutton Siding & Remodeling, Inc. A marketing partner of Doug's was responsible for one of the most successful marketing campaigns in Springfield. Sutton Siding & Remodeling adopted the slogan, ""You call us, we don't call you."" That is because some key competitors at the time were dialing for dollars every evening and on weekends bothering people for appointments. The slogan worked and separated Sutton's from the vultures lurking on the phone. People still refer to that slogan today and refer to Sutton’s as simply “Sutton Siding.” Fast forward to 1995 and Douglas Sutton Jr, along with his brother Michael Sutton, took over the family business. Eventually, the duo decided to change the name to simply ""Sutton's."" The pair added a property restoration division and is recognizing a need in the marketplace to help customers after a fire or storm damage. Together, the brothers still operate the business in partnership and work in the business every day in the same office on Peoria Road on Springfield’s north side. Sutton’s has three distinct divisions. They are Exteriors, Remodeling, and Service. Sutton’s started as a Roofing and Siding company and is still the largest Roofing & Siding Company in central Illinois.

Description of Work: We recently had our roof and gutters replaced by Sutton's. Although we know that their estimates will never come in the lowest, we also know that you get what you pay for. The quality of the materials and the workmanship were top notch. The workers were pleasant, accommodating when we had questions, stayed everyday until they reached an appropriate stopping point and never left without cleaning everything up. Even when we discovered a couple of unforeseen problems on the roof, everything was addressed and fixed while still staying within the original timeline for completion. This wasn't the first time we have used Sutton's and I'm sure it won't be the last.

Description of Work: They installed gutter covers, modified two downspouts, and installed a water diverter. They significantly changed one quote after I told their competitors I had accepted their preliminary quotes, but I went ahead and used them for most quotes. They took forever (months) to do the jobs, and only after several phone calls. Despite the endless delays they started phone calling me less than 10 days after job completion demanding payment and threatened late fees! The quality of the work was acceptable. Because of the changed quote, the endless delays, and most particularly the harassing phone calls, I will never use them again.

Thank you for the review Member. I apologize that your experience with Sutton's was not a positive one and that we were not quick enough to get on your job. The contract that we signed together is dated 10/17/14 and the job completion was 11/26/14 (as you noted). For a job of this magnitude we typically expect the job to be completed in 3-4 weeks during peak season. This obviously was not the case in your situation and I apologize for the “endless” delays. While fall is our busiest season, trying to get work done before the winter, we should have done a much better job up-front and in the weeks leading up to your project of keeping you informed about when we could get your job started/completed. We try so give an idea of when we will be able to do a job upon the contract signing and it doesn’t look like that was accomplished. This is unacceptable and I am looking into how this job slipped through the cracks in our processes. I also apologize that we "significantly" changed one of your quotes. Our records show that we have a signed contract for $1,517.00 which is the same amount that was billed (and paid) for the job. I'm not sure where the change you are talking about is, but I am meeting with your salesperson, Ben, this morning to figure out what happened here. Lastly, I apologize that you felt harassed by Cindy when she called to ask for the final payment of your completed job. The contract that you signed states that there was to be $1,217 due upon completion (less the $300 down payment). In cases where we are not able to collect upon job completion the billing is turned over to our front office to collect the final payment as soon as possible, in order to keep cash flow and pay our employees for the work that they have done. Also, in the contract that you signed it states that there will be late fees applied if the payment is not received within a certain time frame of completion. The front office is trained to remind our customers that have not yet paid, that there are these late fees and I again apologize if this was done in a manner that felt harassing/threatening. Through all of this, I am at least glad that the quality of wok was acceptable and we will work better in the future to improve upon the issues that arose within your project so that we can try to avoid them with future customers.

Description of Work: Put on a new roof and gutters. The project was delayed by rain by several weeks. But when they got started they were very fast and efficient. Clean up after themselves and did not ask for final payment until we were 100% satisfied. The roof is Beautiful

Description of Work: Installed a complete new roof; installed two new skylights and did the related inteior finish work; located and corrected the cause of leaking at the bottom of patio doors. It all went quite well. I do not have or recall the cost figures since it was all covered by insurance.

Description of Work: Sutton's installed a porch railing. They had to work several days on it in cold weather. There was no mess at the end of the day when they would leave. The railing is well constructed and looks beautiful. I have had many compliments on it. I used Sutton because they are so well established and I knew I would get quality workmanship.

I had received other estimates, but Sutton's was the highest. It was determined by all that there had been hail damage. The insurance company only wanted to pay for "spot" repairs, but Sutton's convinced them that it really did need a complete roof. The work was done quickly and efficiently, and I am very pleased with the result.
Description of Work: The roof with two layers was replaced with architectural shingles. Sutton's helped tremendously with the insurance company!

Residence foundation is being held up in the crawlspace with a beam standing on cinder blocks. Per the structural engineer report in May 2007, it was apparent that no work was completed when contracted with Sutton Siding. The pictures are the same as when the home inspection was completed. I initially filed a complaint with the IL States's Attorney Office, consumer division and also the BBB. The report returned was that Sutton Siding lied about their part in this and information was to the fact that I refused to have them come back out. They absolutely did nothing according to the contract and I doubt whether they actually have any experience with restoring/repairing crawl spaces.
Description of Work: Service to be performed as a result of the home inspection was to shore up a beam in the crawlspace sitting on cinder blocks. Also, a coding violation was indicated by the structural engineer personel, but not in the actual report.

Member is not including the fact that we offered to come back out and correct any concerns that she had. She would not grant us access to the property. She would not allow us to call her. She simply wanted us to give her a complete refund after we had completed the work that we were contracted to do. We offered, in writing, through the AG's office, to come back out and repair anything that was a direct result of our workmanship. Member would not grant us access. Pictures provided by the engineering firm she hired were the same photos provided by a contractor that is a competitor of ours. We found it curious that the photos were identical in both reports. It is our position that Member is confusing what work was performed by our company in relation to what actually needs to be completed to totally alleviate her residence's numerous problems. Her engineer's report, and the report from the alternate contractor both state numerous issues affecting the structural integrity of the residence. Again, many of these issues were outside of the scope of work Member contracted us to do. Member now acknowledges that her Realtor and mortgage company did not properly disclose problems from the beginning. We wish Member the best in the future and we deeply regret that we couldn't reach an amicable solution.

Even though we decided to end the evaluation process prior to receiving a quote, it was a great experience with Suttons. They were very understanding about our reasons for not pursuing this project any further and at no time did we feel pressured to finish what we had started with them. I would have no second thoughts about hiring them for work in the future as they demonstrated their business integrity throughout our intense but brief time working with them.
Description of Work: We called Suttons to examine a house we were considering for total remodel from top bottom and provide us with a quote for this very large project. The salesperson was prompt, very professional, knowledgeable about his field and made us feel comfortable with his level of experience as soon as we started talking about the extensive work that would be required for the remodel.

He arrived at the time he said he would. He checked the doorbell and light switch and left to get parts. He installed them and made sure they worked correctly. Then he tried to take a shower filter cover apart to install a new filter. He said he couldn't do it without breaking it. The charges were printed on the form and I paid him. I probably shouldn't have paid the full amount since he didn't get the shower filter replaced.
