Adrian is really creative and his custom carpentry is second to none. I've attached some before and after pictures to the review. See for yourself.
I plan to continue working with Adrian as an investor because I value his communication and project management skills more than anything else.
"Thank you for taking the time to write the review."
"It was a 100% custom woodworking project and we were very excited to do it. Thank you for hiring us and giving us the opportunity to show what we can do."
"Sapele is my favorite wood species. I was very happy that I finally had the chance to see my own product installed and finished as part of a project. Thank you for taking the time to write this review."
I am just absolutely blown away by how perfect everything turned out. They worked with us on every aspect of the project together, communication was excellent, and honestly I don't want to do another project like this in my house without involving Victor and John - those guys are the BEST.
Another great plus - these guys are super responsive and tech savvy. Emails are answered quickly and thoroughly, and it really helped put our minds at ease when we had questions, which is great.
The only negative I can think of was we had to wait a while to get on their schedule, but after seeing what they did in four days I can say without reservation that it was 100% worth the wait.
I'm not sure what to say about the negative reviews. Those are not indicative of my experience with these guys at all. A+ I would use them again in a heartbeat.
"It was a difficult project. Victor and John proved once again that they are a very experienced team of carpenters. Thank you for the opportunity to tackle such a project and thank you for the review. It is very much appreciated."
"Thank you for taking time to write the review."
Without a doubt, Adrian demonstrates the four things you want in a finish carpenter - skill, creativity, attention to detail and pride. Finish carpentry is one of the most critical elements of any renovation project. He not only had to put the finishing touch on the work of so many others but in some cases he even had to compensate for their mistakes to make the end result look flawless. That?s the magic that the finish carpenter needs to bring to the project and Adrian came through for us. Of course, with a project of this magnitude, errors and miscommunication on both sides are inevitable. The important thing for me is how they get resolved. Adrian took responsibility for his work and his team. He admitted when mistakes were made and worked diligently to resolve in a timely fashion to get the project back on track. His pricing was competitive but more important he never took advantage of change orders and add-ons. I would highly recommend Adrian for your project. In fact, he will be returning to my house for phase 2 in a few months.
"Very delicate project, a real pleasure for a dedicated carpenter. The customers had some great ideas about how to improve the initial plan. It was also very easy to work with them despite the numerous setbacks we both experienced due to external factors. The house is a marvel: the level of finishing delivered by all the trades involved is just fantastic, the design of the woodworking and the colors are really unique. We already asked for permission to use pictures of this house on our website. We are thankful for the opportunity to work with knowledgeable people that help us improve ourselves and grow."
"It was a small project but really important if you want to fully enjoy your dining room. We did it as planned and scheduled, she was very happy and she took the time to write us a review. We thank you very much."
"One of our most loved customers: a highly educated family with deep respect for our work and efforts to make their historical house even more beautiful and charming. There is very little to almost nothing to ad value to their house but we are here if they need us."
I had such a great experience working with Adrian. He made sure I understood all the details of the work he would perform before the work started and the entire transaction was very pleasant.
Because of the fantastic job he did along with the overall experience I selected Adrian as my contractor for a large whole home renovation I am undertaking as an investor. We have already started discussing a major addition to my home as well.
"This member/client was one of the multiple signs that the business we have built with so much effort is finally showing results. Here are the keys for a successful relation between an investor and us: THE INVESTOR: - knows exactly what are his tasks starting from - finding the property,; - securing the funds; - establishing good communication with all the trades involved; - showing flexibility when it's needed. US: - extremely fast response to the client's questions and needs; - focus on details and anticipation of potential issues; - balance in schedule and good relation with the other trades; - the woodworking in a residential property is the most visible, therefor, we make sure the quality of our work is outstanding. Some of the most important sections of our work will be displayed on our website: www.splashcarpentry.com"
Really appreciate all their help. Would highly recommend them.
"This was one of our first significant projects that we got through Angie's List. At that point we realized that Angie's List should be our main focus when it comes to advertising. We were right, the business developed fast and from small projects we got to work on complete house renovations for investors and new construction carpentry for several General contractors. We thank Angie's List members for believing in this website and giving honest hard working people a chance to prove themselves."
"I had the pleasure to work for a very kind and polite family of doctors. They told me what they want, we agreed on the terms, they left a key in a lock box for me and I did the job. Everybody was happy with the results. Since they left me this review, they already hired me again to do upgrade a large and detailed fireplace which will be posted on our website very soon. It came out really good."
The other reviews say it all. Adrian does great work, is very fairly priced, and is a pleasure to work with. He understands hard work and goes the extra mile to get the job done correctly. I certainly will use him again!
"Always a good experience working with this general contractor/investor/real estate agent: organized, always on time, fast communication. Too bad I cannot put his name here."
- the stairs needed to be stained and finished.
- the banister was destroyed by him and he left shards of wood on the handrails. this needed to be rebuilt (see pictures)
- he removed all of our handrails in the house (3 flights of stairs) leaving no handrails
- coves needed to be stained varnished and installed.
- he removed all the base shoes in the house.
- stringers and plinths were left incomplete, uninstalled and not secured.
i told him that this is not per our agreement which was 50% down and 50% on completion. He seemed honest and did do some additional work that he included in our original price, which we were appreciative of. So, as a token of our appreciation, we did advance him $3000 additional in good faith, which he asked to be written out specifically in his name (on top of 50% down already). After the staining of the floors and applying the finish, there were some serious concerns and issues. - deep large sanding scuff marks in the sanding process of the stairs and oak top boards. splintering on the stairs noses of 1st floor steps from scraping/sanding (see pictures)
- poorly applied stain to several spots on the floor.
- sanding process cut grooves in every riser and stringer on the 1st floor stairs, we asked to make sure they would take care not to do this but it still happened, but then we were told after it happened that the painter needs to patch and fix that.
- incomplete trim, replacement of removed baseboards
- bumps and debris/inclusions in the flooring. the floor was rough and not smooth (see pictures)
When we brought this to his attention he became annoyed. He stated that the sanding job is normal and this is how it should appear and that we cant judge it 2 or 3 steps before its done. He stated that the sander cutting into the risers were normal and that the painters had to fix that because "that's what painters do". His workers were sloppy and got stain on every riser and even on newly spray painted cabinetry that was just installed the week before. Then he decided to stop work, and change the terms of our agreement he tried to extort us for the rest of the money by holding his remaining work hostage until we paid Matthew his "partner'/subcontractor (who HE didn't pay). When we told him that we would not pay him any more money and that he should pay his subcontractor out of the money we already paid him (which was almost 70% of the entire project!), he abandoned the job refusing to complete his project, leaving the work undone. He never ever gave us a reason why he abandoned the project. we sent him emails giving him the choice to complete the project as agreed and we would pay him the remaining money, or he could not complete and choose to breech our contract and we would take what action we need to. He chose not to reply or complete the project. This was the letter that was sent to him to which he never replied:
Adrian, i am not sure why you are telling us that you are not comfortable investing any more time in this project? You have not given us any reasons for not completing this job. Asking for additional money before you complete this project is not in accordance to our agreement. Our agreement states that we pay you half down initially and the remaining half upon completion of the project. This job is not complete. We also have additionally paid you $3000 more than we need to, because you said you needed it for expenses. We have paid you almost 70% of the entire project costs. There are numerous outstanding issues that still need to be done:
- installation of the coves on all the stairs
- installation of the post, rail, and spindles on the first floor stairs
- repair of the stringers/plinths/trim
- repair of the trim on the 1st floor room
- replacement of all the handrails your removed
- replacement of all the shoe bases that you removed.
- installation of baseboards in 4th floor closet.
- rebuffing and finishing the final coat of varnish (to fix the marred finish).
You have left us with an incomplete floor, no handrails on any of the stairs, and an unsafe 1st floor banister rail with broken spindle shards. This is not safe and represents a danger to my family and my young children. We have paid you additional money beyond our agreement (in good faith). To us, it appears that you are taking advantage of that and are running with our money, without completing the job. We absolutely will not agree to your modified terms. We will not pay you any more additional money until this project is completed. At this point i see 2 options: 1) You can complete the project, as agreed to, and we can pay you the remaining money that we owe you. (This seems like the best situation for everyone involved. We get the completed job as you agreed to, everyone gets paid, we don't have to get someone else to finish the uncompleted work, we avoid any further action) 2) You can choose to not complete this work, and this will essentially constitute a "breach" of our agreement. We will then have to hire another contractor to finish/fix your work that you left incomplete/unsatisfactory/unsafe. Understand that if we have to do this, we may decide to go after you legally to recoup our damages (the cost of completing this job properly) from your breach of contract as well as additional $3000 that you have taken from us Please understand that this is something that we would really like to avoid if possible. i truly hope it does not come down to this. Please tell us how you would like to proceed. You have until Friday (June 5th) to let us know your decision. If we do not hear back from you by then we will assume you are abandoning this project and we will proceed accordingly.
To address the other issues he claims:
i have never texted him after midnight. (i have my text history to prove it). i have sent him emails after midnight, specifically the day before the painters were supposed to come (because i do shift work) and only in conjunction of trying to ask him what to do with his unfinished work, since he would not come to see, or complete the work in person. We originally requested Bona traffic HD (BEFORE we started the project) as our finishing product and he was well aware that this was what we wanted from the beginning. (we received 3 other flooring quotes that used this product and we reviewed the product seemed like a good product. His reply was: "Bona is a good product, we will use that". when i checked to make sure that this was the product they were using, they were using Bona traffic and said they didn't know there was a Bona traffic HD product out there. They were aware of this at 10:00 AM when the came to varnish the floors on Thursday 5/28/15 (which was supposed to be our day of completion). They had to go look for it and lost an entire day of work because they didnt have the right product. At 3 pm he calls me to tell me that they will have to put 2 coats on Friday. i asked to see if they could get the product and put 1 coat on that evenin
"I should start by mentioning that I have documentation and pictures for each stage of this project. We did not delay the completion of the work. In fact, me and my partner Matthew, along with 4 workers, sacrificed the entire Memorial Day weekend and pushed long hours in order to gain as much time as possible for this customers. I soon realized that it was a mistake to do so, extra work came in the picture soon enough. I did not mind that and I did not even asked for extra money. Here is what we had to do: 1. remove a hardwood floor board on a 10 feet section, create a channel and hide 2 DSL cables under it; 2. replace two nosing pieces on the existing stairs; 3. install and finish new hardwood floor in a newly built 10 sqft closet, baseboards, shoe base etc. 4. manufacture and install new customized plinth blocks in one room (6 pieces). Me and my partner did not mind taking care of these extra items despite they where never mentioned when we inspected the job site, but we expected at least a "thank you". Instead, they started with a long list of complaints, ridiculous demands and often insulting questions. I will give you a few examples: - my neighbour said maybe that should be done differently; - other floor guys told me you should use this type of varnish (why did not they hire those floor guys in the first place?); - maybe there is a machine for this specific work and you don't know about it; - in our absence, the customer's husband was questioning our workers : for how long have you been working for them? how much do they pay you? are you paid by the job or by the hour? - emails at text messages all day and after midnight; - ridiculous request made by phone at 3 pm while we were in other locations: nobody is home so you can come and work until 11 pm.. I decided to stop everything until we have a new agreement. At the moment I did that, the customer had $4,000 balance and we had 2 more days of work. Instead of complying with my request in the email below, he starts threatening: he will look for someone else, he will trash me here on Angie's List, he will sue me etc. Aparently, it did not work the way he thought. Nobody, especially a professional, will continue the project. Here is the reason: it is well done and it is very obvious we were not fired for bad quality. Here is the last email I sent to this person: Good morning, I am glad you like the new stair parts. It's $1,500 value added to your house. Like I told you yesterday, I am focusing on finishing this job properly. However, I still don't feel comfortable continuing investing time and effort in this project. In order to make things work, we need to change the payment plan. Please contact Matthew and pay him $3,500 before Friday. He will prepare an invoice for it. I will not accept check at this point, just cahs. After the payment is made, John and his coworker will be scheduled for Friday as we discussed. After they completed the tasks, Matthew will come to apply the last coat. With this occasion, please have ready the remaining $500 for him. If you have any questions, please contact Matthew directly. I will not be available for the rest of the day. I also cc'd both Matthew and John so I don't have to explain to each of them what is the situation. I promise to complete your project properly but I want Matthew to get paid."
Bottom line . . .
Adrian is a consummate professional, upbeat (not a fan of sour contractors), highly ethical, (and what counts most) a superior carpenter. Recommend him at the highest level.
"Working for this member is an absolute pleasure: he knows what he wants, the scheduling is very easy, the work he is asking for is good quality interior carpentry, no cutting corners, nothing. Just pure respect from each side. After a stressful week of working in other areas with no parking, no room for the tools, unreasonable deadlines to finish the project, working for him felt like a vacation. When the customer respects his contractor, pays him a fair rate for his work and appreciates his efforts, everything goes smoother and a tough experience like having major construction work done in your house is much less difficult."
"It was a coupon for 20 hours of carpentry. The member wanted picture frame in one room. Everything went well, the team completed the installation in one day. It was all good."
"All I can say, it is good to have a shop. Most of our customer's are living in the house when we do the work, so less time we spend there, happier they are. Thank you for hiring us."
Best of all, the resulting staircase is absolutely gorgeous. The custom quarter-sawn oak parts are stunning.
"It was a 40 hours coupon for master carpentry that turned into a bigger project. We took advantage of the fact that we have a shop and we minimized the time needed in the customer's house. All the posts, railings and balusters were manufactured and finished in the shop. Only installation and minimum touch-up work was needed in the house. The member proved to be a very nice person and easy to deal with. Thank you for hiring us."
"When it comes to built-ins, Dylan and Chris are the best thing that can happen to a customer. Thank you for hiring us."
While they were there I asked if they could install a window sill and Roman was more than happy to oblige. It cost me just a little more to have that done and they quickly got it installed.
Their attitude and willingness to do a good job was impressive, I will definitely use them again.
"Thank you for appreciating our efforts."
"Thank you for appreciating our efforts."
"We upgraded the main stairs and we built the stairs going to the basement. We appreciate the review, thank you for taking the time to write it."
Adrian responded very quickly and was very courteous and we felt the sincerity in his response. He gave us a very reasonable price and we decided to give him the work.
They showed up on time and took care of the work as agreed. He even put on trims at small areas that wasn't originally quoted but felt that it would be better with it. The house is almost done and everything looks great.
Through out the project Adrian was very responsive to all contacts through email and honestly, there's nothing we could really say other than we would recommend them to anyone and would definitely use again and will be the first we contact should we need to get additional work done in the future.
"The member proved to be a very honest person which is exactly the customers I am looking for. He got a very high quote from his General Contractor and I gave him my honest opinion. I provided him samples of casings, baseboards, crown etc. from my supplier along with pictures from previous projects. He considered our prices very decent and he hired us. I organized the material delivery at our shop and we applied the first coat of paint on them in the shop. This move saved our member's a lot of time and space, leaving room for the other trades to finish their work without delaying the project. It was very easy to work with this member, from making decisions regarding the materials, finishes and payment methods. He used Chase Quick Pay a Person, the online option of paying, which saves time and unnecessary trips to the bank for deposits. Thank you again for hiring us and enjoy your house."
"It was a small job but working in a highrise requires very good planning. From traffic, parking, elevator scheduling and working around the customer's own schedule, everything needs to be well planned. We paid an initial visit to make sure the new baseboard will match the existing one both in shape and finishing, we did the finishing part in our shop to minimize the disturbance in the customer's residence and next day the job was done."
"It was a small wall railing installation project, it went well."
