The designer was fine. However they put a project manager on it who continuously lied about timing and the work. At one point we had very expensive tile and the tile company recommended a specific backing on the tile. I saw they were not putting this backing on the tile and asked. The program manager told me he called the tile company and got an okay on what they were doing to prepare the tile. I was traveling a lot but when I had a chance I called the tile company and they had never called to ask. It was too late. The tilers they used were horrible. They had an inset that was very sloppy when I saw it I asked the tile guy and all would they live with this mismatched, badly cut, and non aligned tile in their house. No one answered and the tile guy left. It was unsightly and very sloppy. The tile company left what seemed like a minor, non English speaking boy alone all day to do the tile. He had no water or food. They didn't come back to get him til late. I gave him water. It was very hot. He was clearly new at laying tile and this was very expensive glass tile. In the end it took twice as long and I knew at some point we would have issues with the tile. Fast forward 4 years, our drain backs up, our neighbor immediately calls to say water is pouring through his ceiling. After several weeks of diagnosis and tearing up the ceiling it is determined the Mr Floors did not put in a draining tub. A mandatory drain that goes in when you have a shower to catch the overflow in case drain backs up. The two contractors we had do estimates were shocked how bad the work was there was NO tub only paper. I called MrFloors to come see how bad their work was and gave them an option to discuss. They basically blamed it on the code inspectors who should have caught this. I would NEVER hire them and stay away
Description of Work: Designed and redid our bathroom. Complete gut of a vintage bathroom. We tore out the bathtub and replaced with a larger shower with glass tile. We redid the floors and the tile walls. They assisted with design and were in charge of the job

There is nothing more important to us than a happy and satisfied client. Hundreds of clients each year rely on our expertise, professionalism and guidance. With over 10,000 completed projects in the last 26 years we take great pride in offering each client a superior customer service experience and a gorgeous finished product. According to our records we performed work for this homeowner in 2007. All our work was performed under a City of Evanston Construction Permit and each step of the project was reviewed by a City of Evanston inspector. The client was a pleasure to deal with and all issues and concerns brought to our attention were immediately addressed. The client paid in full and we heard nothing more for over 6 years. Admittedly this client lives in a 100 year old Vintage building with very old common area plumbing. The client apparently had a backup which caused a flood. We have no information on what caused the actual backup and we were only notified of this issue by the client after she had already hired a contractor to repair the damage caused by the flood. We were then accused of performing shoddy work and were blamed for the resulting flood. We were never given a chance to evaluate the situation prior to the start of the remedial work. We are unsure why the homeowner and her new contractor believe our work was done incorrectly when clearly all our work was performed in full compliance and under the City of Evanston’s standard permit and inspections process. We regret that our client had the flood but do not agree with her assertion that we are to blame and would ask our perspective clients to consider all facts presented.

We take great pride in offering our clients superior customer service which is why receiving a negative comment is very rare for us at Mr. Floor. According to our records we performed work for Ms. [member name removed] in September of 2007. The client was a pleasure to deal with and at no point were any issues or concerns brought to our attention. We find it very surprising that instead of simply contacting us anytime over the last six years and letting us address any issue that may exist, the client chose to post a negative comment on Angie’s List. We stand ready, willing and able to resolve any issues Ms. [member name removed] may have.

We met with the salesman actually at the showroom and had a good idea of the type and color wood we wanted. Later that week he came to our house to get measurements and then submitted a quote. While at the house, we did tell him that the old wood floor would be on stringers and he said no problem. The day before the work started we told the supervisor that the room was upstairs and since it was snowing they should bring drop cloths for the stairs and that did not happen. When he arrived he informed me about the stringers in the floor and said a plywood subfloor would have to be installed and that it would be an additional $1500 for 15 sheets of plywood. I objected since a piece of plywood is only $20. He then told me the whole closet had to be emptied which was in contrast to the salesman. The salesman also said the job would take a day and it took 2 1/2 days. The salesman needs more training. I got it done by myself and then installed the floor the next day. The subs who installed the floor did a great job and i'm happy with the final product. Being in home improvements for 25 years I wasn't thrilled with some of their practices.
Description of Work: Replaced the floor in with a prefinished wood floor in a bedroom. Work involved removing old carpeting, old hardwood floor and installing new wood floor. They did remove and haul all debris.

Response from Mr. Floor Companies
Mr. Floor is committed to delivering the highest level of product and service. It is not always possible to determine the construction or make-up of the subfloor when we visit a home for an evaluation. In this particular case there was a layer of carpet on top of an existing wood floor. It was not possible to see and therefore determine if the subfloor was a plywood or “sleeper” subfloor. Since we could not see through the multiple layers of flooring, the client was given multiple written options as to the possibility of needing a new plywood subfloor if one did not exist. It is a standard protocol to inform the client of such a possibility and this was done in writing on the proposal for work we submitted to him. The client did not accept our cost for installing the required plywood, as is his prerogative, and elected to install it himself to save money. This is not an issue for us and we installed our new wood floor directly over his new plywood subfloor. We worked on this project as quickly and efficiently as possible. As is our standard practice we told him that a project of this scope would take 1-2 days. The project took ½ day longer than project due to the plywood subfloor that the client installed. There was no additional charge for the extra ½ day that it took us to complete the work. As with any construction project we inform our clients to remove personal contents, including clothing, out of work areas. It is strictly up to each individual client whether or not to move such items.

My experience with Mr Floor started off well. Sales rep, Gina, was helpful in recommending the right type of flooring. She steered me away from tile and toward laminate which was definitely the right solution for what I was trying to accomplish. The price was not the best but I chose Mr Floor because of favorable reviews in Angies List and a positive experience with Gina. I was however very disappointed with the results. The workers showed up on time and finished the job on schedule but left a big mess including not hanging plastic over any of the appliances. The floor was uneven in a section that caused the laminate to bend visibly and made the refrigerator rock back and forth. I demonstrated this to the project manager who explained this was because they had erroneously scoped out 1/4" plywood to repair the sub-flooring and found out later that 1/2" plywood was needed. He noted they did this at no additional charge, an explanation I found not only comical (it is maybe $5 extra for a sheet of 1/2" plywood versus 1/4") but it failed to address the issue of my uneven floor. I pressed him harder and he then explained that the floor would even out over time because the laminate would settle. He also offered to adjust the wheel heights on my refrigerator. Well it is now about 1 year later and I can tell you the floor never "settled". I decided to pull back the laminate to inspect and was shocked at what I saw. First, they did not repair the entire area of sub-flooring that had been damaged. Even worse is the material they had used to make the floor level were parts of the cardboard box that the laminate was delivered in. They also used this behind the baseboard. I found this incredibly unprofessional and I will never use Mr Floor again. I recommend to anyone who has used them in the past to check underneath their flooring to see how well their cardboard is holding up.

We take customer service, product longevity and product performance extremely seriously at Mr. Floor. The Member’s project although small in size was not easy in scope. A laminate floor by definition is installed in a”floating” manner. This means that the floor is installed loose on top of an existing subfloor without being attached to it. These floating floors are designed to flex as they accommodate uneven or defective subfloors especially when a heavy object like a refrigerator is placed on them. Because of the age and poor quality of the subfloor our recommendation to the Member was in fact to “float” over it with a laminate floor so as not to use his subfloor a structural element by attaching products to it such as tile. Doing so would cause these attached products to surely fail. The Member’s floor is not failing but acting as designed. The use of cardboard and other corrugated materials by laying them loose over a 100 year old subfloor is the correct and approved method of a “floating” installation. This project was completed in June of 2009 and The Member has never contacted us regarding any issues he may have been experiencing with his floors. This is the first we have heard of his issue. Had the Member contacted us at any time we would have been happy to come out and make any necessary adjustments to his floor at no charge.

I have to say that Mr. Floor did a great job refinishing my floors. I live in an older condo and the floors are also quite old. Joe, my project manager, came in before the job began and gave me a realistic view of what could and could not be done. One of the challenges was that I had almost all of the flooring redone and was not able to empty the furniture from my condo. One of the reasons I went with Mr. Floor was the fact that for a small charge they were willing to move the furniture around and stage the work accordingly. I have to say that I was a bit worried as I had just also had my condo repainted. Somehow they managed to move furniture in and out of rooms (and some a tight squeeze) with minimal nicking. In fact, only one small area of paint was harmed due to the tape to seal off the area from dust (Joe did offer to touch it up but I declined). Joe was in contact daily with me to give me updates on what had been done and how they were progressing. I needed to have something touched up and he and his crew were very adaptable to my schedule. My floors look great and appreciate the care they took and the responsiveness to my inquiries.

1) On the maple floor installation, the salesman told me to get the results I wanted, I needed a water-based finish instead of an oil-based finish. That meant getting a custom stain instead of prefinished hardwood -- which meant paying an additional $1000+. When it came time to do the finish, however, the man in charge said doing water-based would give the same result, but it would take longer, so he recommended against it. So did he just want to just want to finish early, or did the salesman just want to sell me something I didn't need? In the end, it appears to be the latter. 2) On the red oak sand-and-stain, the result came out with two contrasting colors instead of variations on the selected color. All they said when selling us the service was "red oak is easy to stain." All they said when we expressed dissatisfaction with the result was "that's just how red oak is." Had we known that certain boards could be so resistant to stain, we would have selected a color more similar to red oak's natural color so that the variation would not be so obvious. Instead we have a somewhat ridiculous looking floor. 3) With regard to the red oak, they were going to proceed to finishing it without even showing us the stain to see if we liked it. We snuck into the house (we didn't live there yet) and when I saw it, and called to say I didn't like it, I was told it would set the schedule back nearly a week if we wanted to change it. That didn't make much sense to me since it only took a day to sand off the old stain and put on the new stain. Now it would take a week to do that again? They knew I was on a tight schedule, so I acquiesced. In retrospect, I should have stuck to my guns, taken a day to think about it, and require they resand and stain it a different color at no cost, since the workers apparently "knew" it would turn out poorly and didn't say anything. In reality, we should only have lost a day on the schedule...especially since we could have used the oil instead of water-based stain. The salesman who made such a big deal about making sure I was happy with the stain/color had virtually nothing to do with the process once it started, and the people in charge of the stain seemed to have a very different attitude. I will likely have someone else sand and restain it in a couple of years. I'm so disappointed and feel like a sucker for not seeing past the hard-sell.
Description of Work: Upstairs: install 550 sq. ft. of new maple hardwood, then sand, stain and finish. Main floor: sand, stain, and finish 500 sq. feet of existing red oak hardwood.

It went well. We were given an initial quote based on the size of the room but once the carpeting was removed it was revealed that a certain amount of repair work would have to be done to the existing hardwood. The job foreman came by immediately to assess and quote the extra work which more or less doubled the cost but clearly was necessary. They went ahead and we were amazed at the job the workers did in laying in new wood and integrating with the old wood; keeping it from looking like anything had been done to it. Three coats of water-based urethane later and we had a beautiful new floor.

Igor was very good to work with in the estimate stage. He understood what we were trying to do. His estimate price was one of the most reasonable. We did have to look outside the Mr Floor showroom to find the tile we wanted. Once we decided, it was a custom order that took 6 weeks. Once the tile was in, they started on the demolition only to find out that the entire order was not in. So that delayed the work by a week. Fortunately, it wasn't our only bathroom so it wasn't that big of an issue. The workers did pay a lot of attention to the details in laying the hexagon tile. On what was supposed to be the final day, the quality of the painting, some tile work and grout was not good. Joe, the project manager, came back to check on our complaints. The crew returned the next day and satisfactorily fixed all the issues. If they had done it right the first time, I would have given them an A on quality. Overall, a good experience.

First and foremost, I have to say that I love my floors. I also have to say that the job was done quickly, and the cost was good, compared to a number of other estimates that I got for what did not appear to be as high quality of product. I was not happy with the disparity of information; that I received different information from the salesman and the workers, AND I did not like the way they mishandled my belongings. The salesman told me that my furniture only needed to be moved from one side of the room to the other, and the empty side of the room would be floored; and then the furniture would be moved to the other side, while the flooring was finished. Because I run my own business from my home, I asked if I would have access to my computer, and he assured me it would only need to be moved across the room. Accordingly, I only cleared the furniture enough for it to be moved across the room. BUT, the workers dumped anything that was in their way, as they shoved all of the (lot of) furniture from the living room and dining room into the (already also full of furniture) bedroom. Sofas were stacked on top of one another, upside down, on top of headrests..... ( you can imagine what that did). Walls and furniture were nicked and scratched. At the end of the job, while most furniture was put back where it belonged, everything else was dumped in the middle of my dining room. When I expressed my dismay to the workers, they assured me I have "too much stuff." I had a lot going on in my home and in my life that week, so I didn't have the time or energy to argue with them, but in retrospect I was quite distressed by the mess they made. When I mentioned the problem to the salesman, several weeks later, he assured me that they would be happy to help me relocate any furniture. This was not the point, anymore. Since things were shoved every which way, I am still finding things out of place -- and NOT finding things I need. As I said, the workers told me I had 'too much stuff;' I felt that if they needed my things moved out of their way more than I had, they should have told me, rather than shoving things wherever they saw fit.

FURNITURE MANIPULATION WAS DEFINITELY A CHALLENGE ON THIS PROJECT. CONTENTS WERE MOVED CAREFULLY IN STAGES AS THE FLOORING WAS BEING INSTALLED. COUCHES HAD TO BE STACKED DUE TO LACK OF STORAGE SPACE. I met with Igor in June to discuss what we wanted, and to establish a time line, as we had vacation in early August. A couple weeks later, the floor crew arrived and in 5 quick days they had completely installed, sanded and finished the new floor. The guys were nice; one of them lost our keys, so we had to change our locks--Mr. Floor reimbursed us for the locksmith. Over the winter, the floorboards have shrunk and separated a bit, but I guess that's normal. The countertop process was less painless; I told the crew that they had cut one countertop too long for the space for the fridge (which hadn't yet been delivered). Despite my efforts, they insisted on installing it as-is. Days later when the fridge was delivered, it didn't fit b/c of the extra 1/4 inch, just as I had told the countertop crew. Between the crew's lack of availability and our vacation, it took several weeks before one of the guys came back to remove, cut and reinstall the countertop. In the end, everything looks great

Installed new faucet (purchased from Mr. Floor). We were fixing up our kitchen (condo) primarily for resale, not as a long-term investment.
