Upon inspection, he found mold in the attic. Told us we needed to have the mold removed. He took pictures and measurements. He set up another appointment to present the proposal, and unfortunately we had to cancel. When I sent an email to cancel the meeting, I asked him to send the proposal. He never sent the proposal or called. The estimate cost me $275.00. I feel I should have received the quote. In the mean time, I have received other quotes that have not cost me anything. 8/30/13 I have received the proposal from Steve. I never received it before, I even checked my spam. He stopped over to show me a printout showing he sent the quote on 8/13, approx. 2 hours after we canceled the meeting.

No work was completed. Owner canceled appointment and notified us to email estimate and this was done 1 hour and 17 minutes after we received email from owner. Rather than check her spam folder or give a courtesy call to us and request status of estimate she decided the best method was to make a negative posting and when we reviewed her posting we called her immediately and provided proof that the email was sent in which she agreed. .. Service is the backbone of our business and we take this with the utmost of seriousness...

I called and spoke to Steve. He came out and did an inspection. After inspecting the roof and agreeing the roof needed attention he asked to see the attic to determine if the roof may need plywood repair, He then saw a minor mold issue. Steve said he could take care of the issue and replace the roof for a a very fair price ..The crew arrived on time protected our flowers and moved the planters out of the way. I was very impressed by the roof tear off covers that were supplied. They protected my gutters and much of the landscape. This was above and beyond what I expected or asked for. The job was completed and if I had not been home would never have known they were there. That is aside from the beautifully done roof. Thanks Steve and your crew

No work was completed. A roof estimate is free however a roof inspection requires a fee. A roof estimate is for sincere people who are considering replacing their current roof with a new roofing product. A roof inspection is requested to discover the length of time before the existing roof will need to be replaced or to understand what preventive maintenance may need to happen to extend the life of the roof . We do provide this service for a fee with a complete report and pictures of the findings. If you chose to move forward with any repairs and/or replacement this fee will be credited back to you. There are companies that are called "storm chasers" that solicit their service and knock on doors to tell you they will provide a "free inspection" to determine if you have "storm damage" unfortunately the majority of time they falsely claim that you do have damage only to have you file a claim with your insurance company but then your claim is denied. We regret any confusion and are always willing to provide all of our services for all Angie's list members.

The scope of work was more then I expected, there was more water damage than I thought to the plywood sheeting. So instead of 1 day, it took 2 days. Everything was done professionally. During the work, my yard was very messy, by they did an excellent job cleaning up afterwards. I was happy with the work.

Rick came to give us an estimate. While we were waiting for other estimates, he followed up with additional phone calls, but was very patient. He wrote a very detailed estimate and allowed us to ask questions to help explain the materials and work involved. When the men (John and Ken) came, they were very prompt and professional and worked all day to complete the job. They did beautiful work and cleaned up completely. My husband and I are very pleased. We may use them for our house roof next year.

Steve did a great job working with me on scoping out and quoting the job. I did a job walk with 8 contractors (yes, 8), and, through the process, believe that PR&Ex was one of only 3 licensed contractors who was really qualified to do a first class job. My 40 year old house never had proper roof venting installed. Steve didn't just quote the roof replacement but worked with me on a redesign that included proper venting - there are several ways to do this, and Steve was patient and cooperative in working through and costing out different options. When the work was performed, the crew did a good job with set-up and performed quality work. The clean-up was acceptable. The roofing crew were PR&Ex guys with a very knowledgeable and competent foreman. The fascia crew and gutter/downspout crew were sub-contractors who showed up the next couple days to wrap up. All three crews did a good job. Steve's follow-up on resolving punch-list items was great, as was his communication throughout the job. I am pleased with the overall experience I had with PR&Ex. I would recommend this company to others for quality work and professional service.

Rick Cooper was a true professional from first contact to final day of installation, plus follow-up. He explained all of the steps and materials needed, the best methods to use for our situation, etc. Preferred's pricing was competitive with other quotes, as were thei materials and techniques. We had 3 layers of shingles on our 1926 bungalow, seeing as prior owners just put another layer on top of existing instead of tearing off. Therefore, the roofers made a HUGE mess due to all of the old shingles coming down, but cleaned everything up very quickly. They used tarps to ensure the shingles piled up without damaging our house, although a few of our flowers were beaten up...but that's par for the course. The roofing crew were very polite and worked quickly, working over a full weekend to finish the job (one day cut short by rain). They did a magnet sweep, broom and rake sweep, and were able to clean up 99% of the debris. The gutter crew arrived the next morning and were done in about 3 hours, putting up 180-200ft of new aluminum gutters and 4 downspouts neatly and efficiently. I would definitely recommend Preferred, and Rick was very easy to work with throughout the process. He kept us updated throughout as well.

Nine workers showed up on August 1 as scheduled. They removed the existing roof, remediated, and replaced the entire second floor roof and 1/2 of the first floor roof. They called early the next morning to say they feared rain on August 2, so were rescheduling to finish on the 3rd. On Saturday, the 3rd they stayed till they completed an outstanding job. All work was done as described in the contract. We are extremely pleased with the entire process, and highly recommend Preferred Roofing & Exteriors.
Description of Work: I interviewed 7 roofing companies. Preferred Roofing & Exteriors was the only company that examined the attic space above the second floor of my split-level home. Steve showed me the extensive mold that existed in that space for a number of reasons: i.e., no eave ventilation and bathroom exhaust vents 'laying' on top the old insulation. His firm along with Preferred Restoration did a complete tear-out of existing materials & a total replacement of insulation (after remediation), sheathing, felt paper and shingles.

We bought a new house which needed a new roof asap. I had to be out of town for a week, but I called a bunch of companies and asked them to take a look at my roof and email me estimates while I was gone. Steve of Preferred Roofing told me that he needed to look into the attic and get a full sense of what was going on with the roof before giving an estimate, so his was the last estimate I received. After a thorough inspection of our ancient roof and old, cheap skylights, I was expecting his proposal to be higher than the others. Instead, it included more and cost less! Steve explained how roof ventilation works and how our roof currently wasn't being properly ventilated, trapping the hot air in. (Our upstairs had been an inferno in spite of constantly running the AC, so adding a roof vent to actually ventilate the house seemed more than worth it..and it definitely has helped!). He was also able to find the exact kind of skylights we wanted to replace the rickety ones (without blinds) that were already there. The entire job was finished in a day. The crew was great - I needed to get in an out of my house a few times and they were great about clearing little pathways right in the middle of their work zones. They also had to go into my neighbor's yard at one point to pick up some roof debris that had fallen into it. Since we are new to the neighborhood, I really appreciated the crew's concern for both my yard and my neighbors. We love our new roof and cannot believe how much it has spiffed up the exterior of our house.

When I called Preferred for a quote, Steve was out right away and explained everything to me. He was very thorough, polite & professional - looking at the leak that I knew I had as well as the other issues with the roof such as sagging sections. He provided me samples & a complete estimate onsite. The quote was a little higher than others that I received, however the honesty & comfort level that I had with Steve was well worth it. I knew I was going to be taken care of throughout this process. The work was completed in less than 2.5 working days. Each group of workers were professional, punctual, clean, and helpful. I have 2 dogs that had to go outside throughout the day and each group was completely understanding. They always let me know the best way to take them out because they had already cleaned up after themselves in a particular area for them. The first thing completed was the roof. They found damage to the roof that I didn't know about and fixed it in no time. They put tarps down to protect bushes/plants and did a great job cleaning up after themselves. The next thing completed was the soffits, fascia & trim wrapping. When I asked the best way to hang a couple thing with the aluminum, they offered to hang the few things for me. The last thing was the gutters. Talk about amazing how fast it was completed! They were finished with them in no time at all. After each day of work was completed I spoke with Steve as a recap of how everything went and when the next step would start. He stopped by a couple times throughout the process checking on everything - even climbing up on the roof when I had a couple questions. I'm new to the whole process Steve was very patient and understanding with me answering all my questions throughout the whole process.

We thought Preferred Roofing and Exteriors did an excellent job. Reworking the ventilation required removal of the roof vents and the attic fan, installation of additional soffit vents and a ridge vent. They resheathed and reshingled with identical shingles and after they finished this work, you could not tell the difference from the original roofing. They cut out a section of roof so that they could do some of the work from the outside (up to installing the new insulation), and they vacuumed all the insulation directly into a dumpster that was covered so it wouldn't blow all over the place. Preferred had sealed up the attic and all the openings into the house so that there would be not contamination and put a heavy duty ultra hepa filter in the house to ensure that no mold, chemicals, or insulation made it into the living quarters. After they treated the mold with chemicals, they scraped it off and vacuumed up. They installed baffles for the soffit vents so that the new insulation would not block them to a height of about 4 feet above the attic floor, and then they sealed the roof and reshingled. The last step was to blow in new insulation, which they did from the outside, through a bathroom window and up into the hatch for the attic. Each day they cleaned up the exterior, going so far as to vacuum the little bits of insulation off the lawn. They were extremely careful not to damage anything inside or any landscaping outside the house, and aside from some slightly flattened grass in the back yard there was no damage. They put booties on when they were in the house. Also, they were very flexible about scheduling, rescheduling the job several times due to the poor weather and possibility of rain. Charlie managed the job, and he was excellent to work with and extremely competent. Preferred is back now to work on a new job in the basement!
Description of Work: Our attic has always been very humid. Upon inspection they determined that the attic ventilation system was improperly designed for our attic, the insulation was damp, and there was mold in some areas under the roof sheeting. Preferred Roofing and Exteriors reworked the ventilation, removed all the insulation, remediated the mold, and reinsulated the attic.

The roof of my house was showing signs of deterioration. Many of the shingles over the garage had loosened. The area around the chimney had sunken. Also, the color of the shingles had faded greatly. I selected Mr. Steve Case of Preferred Roofing & Exteriors from Angie's List. Steve arrived even before the scheduled time and was already on the roof to inspect and measure! Steve was polite, professional as he introduced himself. He gave me a very fine folder with the details of his company's work and materials. We agreed for the contract to be sent via e-mail. It contained a complete and detailed description of the work to be done and costs. Also, very important to me was to select just the right color of the shingles. I had the Oakridge Shingles brochure that was in the folder that Steve had given to me. It explained the name and quality of the shingles Steve would use which is the Owens Corning Oakridge shingles. ( I did do the research on this product and felt confident about it) And the color chart came with pictures, and I was able to select the color that I felt would blend well with the houses' brick and cedar. Steve kept me informed exactly when the materials would be delivered and the day the work would be scheduled. He was very kind to be flexible and change the day to begin work since two mature trees had to be removed which were too close to the house-this was done on a thursday. The following Saturday Steve's team arrived at 7:30am. From in my house, I got to watch and listen as the men worked. They were an extraordinary team. They were focused on their individual jobs and so well organized. It was like watching a stage play-really. I commented to Ely the foreman on how hard and dangerous the work was, he said, "We're used to it." After eight hours, the work was completed. Ely came to the door to escort me out to see the finished product. I gasped,"It's gorgeous!" It was a brand new roof, a brand new house. Even the continuous gutter system was cleaned and reinstalled even better than before. The color stunning. We walked all around the house, me admiring, and Ely proud (in a good way). He even stopped to repair the outdoor lamp post which had been crooked for some time and he put in new light bulbs. When Steve came to inspect, he very much approved, and even Max his dog seemed to say"Well done!" Thank you Steve. Thank you Angie's List. Thank you to the One Who always guides me.

It went great. Steve scheduled the job and the crew showed up exactly as scheduled. The entire job was completed in one day. (It was ideal weather, warm but not hot and no rain). The guys did a very nice job from what I can see from the ground. They spent a significant amount of time cleaning up after themselves. I have yet to spot a piece of scrap material anywhere around the house or in a flowerbed. I would reccomend this company to my grandmother, were she still around. Good service, good company.

.Steve Case from Preferred Roofing & Exteriors talked with us on three separate occasions. He explained all the options and gave us, I feel excellent advice. His advice saved us some money and after his explanations it was clearly the best choice in materials and the features we needed. His crew showed up as scheduled and performed in a totaly professional manner. All the workmen were polite and informative as to what was going on. One person was doing continuous clean up and kept a magnet going all around the house for errant nails. Upon completion I have an excellent new roof and not even 1 nail has been found. Except for the beautiful new roof no one would know any one was there. First class company from the initial visits to the permit and completion. I usually do not do reviews or endorsements but these guys deserve it.

Estimate: Steve was very prompt in his response time after the initial email request. We were only available to meet after work and he was very accommodating with our schedules. I had to postpone the estimate the first time, but Steve was understanding. When he came out for the estimate, he was very professional. He spent time in our attic, pointing out some mold and how the bath fans were not vented correctly. I was aware the fans were not correct, but was surprised at the amount of mold that accumulated over the short time that we purchased the home a few years ago! Steve then hopped on the roof and inspected the condition of the roof. Since I am afraid of heights, he took pictures of some of the problem areas with his I-PAD and came down and showed me some of the problems we had. He went to his truck and printed a professional printed estimate that was very thorough with all the work that he was proposing. He spent time explaining in detail the product he is using and why and answered all of our questions. I was very impressed with the professionalism of our first meeting. We had a few others come out for quotes, but they seemed more concerned with pricing rather than focusing on the quality of the work. They also did not spend as much time explaining the work and materials. Pricing: Preferred's pricing did come in a little bit higher than the others, but I believe you get what you pay for and wasn't looking for the cheapest bid. Based on the professionalism, I was confident in the work that they would perform so I gave them a shot to try narrowing the gap in pricing. Although not the cheapest estimate we had, I had trust that they would do the job right so we chose them. I mean, what is a few bucks over the 30 year life of the roof? So we signed the proposal and scheduled the job. Scheduling / Communication We were scheduled about two weeks after we accepted the proposal. Due to rain, they had to push us back a few days, but Steve was very good at communicating that throughout the week. I felt like our job was just as important to him as it was to us (let's be honest, it is a good chunk of money!) and felt very well informed thoughout the process. Day of the job The day of the work, the workers showed up on time (actually 15 mins early! I wish I could get my employees to do that!) explained what they would do and started laying tarps to prepare for the tear off. We were home the entire time (I left for a few hours but my wife was home) and the guys were very professional and did a great job! Even our dogs, who normally bark at everything and everyone, were very calm while they were here, which is really unusual. They must have approved of our choice of roofers as well! They finished the work and cleaned up very well! We double checked the driveway and only found one nail, which could have fell out of the truck as they were leaving. I think I found one more nail on the back deck. That was it! Honestly, I don't think they could have done a better job! Completed After they left I was inspecting the work (from ground level of course!) and noticed one minor mistake. When Steve and I initially spoke and on the quote it mentioned our satelite dish. It was left by the previous owners and I forgot it was up there. I mentioned to Steve that I would like to take the opportunity to remove the dish when they put on the new roof. Unfortunately, I noticed that they put the dish back up before they left. It was a minor error, that we would have lived with. Owning up to mistakes I sent Steve a follow up email thanking him and just mentioned that they put the dish back up on Monday morning around 6:00 am. I received a response almost immediately. I was at work around 7:00 am when my brother called and asked if I knew why the roofers came back. Steve sent them over before their first job of the day, to come over, remove the dish and replace the shingle that they put the dish on. I was floored! Not only did Steve admit that he himself made the minor error (it would have been VERY easy for him to just blame it on the "workers") he went out of his way to correct it IMMEDIATELY!! I am a firm believer that everyone makes mistakes and I accept that 100%. What I have learned in life is it is how you deal with the mistakes is what makes you a better person, employee, manager, etc. Steve handled it like a champ! He owned up to the error (even though, I felt was very minor) and rectified it! He did not complain, back pedal, pass the blame, put it off, dismiss it, nothing! That's when I knew that we made the right decision in picking this company. I have 100% confidence that if we have any issues with the roof, Steve will do everything he can to fix the issues in a timely manner. This is what is REALLY important! I am sure anyone can put a roof on and not have it leak for a year, two, three, BUT if you have an issue, will they correct it? Will they back pedal or dismiss it? Will they still be in business? I am pretty sure Preferred will be! I would highly recommend Preferred Roofing to anyone looking for a roof. My neighbor complimented it yesterday on how nice of a job they did and he is in the construction trade. Thanks again Steve and everyone else at Preferred!

Very responsive and professional. Price was given to me on the same day the representative came out to look at the job. Very fair price for the work that was being bid on. I would definitely consider this company for another future job. I decided to use another contractor that I was familiar with who was able to provide all the work including the electrical work that was needed. I would definitely consider Preferred Roofing Exteriors again for future work.

My name is George Vodden, and I am the Property Team Chairman for First Lutheran Church (a member of the NALC Synod.) Our church needed a new roof, so I went to Angie?s List (my wife is a member of it) and only called companies with ?A? recommendations. I met with eight contractors, and then presented my results to the Church Council. We chose to go with Steve Case from Preferred Roofing and Exteriors. We had to have the congregation vote on it though as the council did not have the authority to authorize the submitted price. Steve Case was at the meeting and answered any questions the congregation members had asked. The congregation was very pleased with the work done by Steve?s company, and they know the roof looks beautiful. Steve's company started it on Monday and finished it on Thursday. They did the steeple the next week as the lift was not available the week they did the roof. I found Steve to be very professional with the quote, and also with any questions I had about the roof. He came and looked at the roof when the job was finished, and I was very well pleased with how precise he wanted his employees to be when doing the job. He also had some of his employees work on the eaves trough for the proper slope. Later this year I will be doing the roof on my house, and I will go with Steve Case as he is very forthright and honest...and very professional as well. I have a lot of respect for Steve and the company he runs, and if there is any problems Steve will figure out what to do to fix the problems. I am giving Steve Case an ?A recommendation? here on Angie?s List...!!

I called Preferred Roofing due to deteriorating roof shingles. Salesman/Estimator Rick Cooper came out and mentioned the hail damage from a previous storm had heavily damaged the roof. Due to his diligence I contacted my insurance company and he met the insurance adjustor who agreed to a complete replacement for the entire roof and most of the downspouts and gutters. The week that the work was to take place rain was predicted over much of the Chicago area. I understand this work is weather dependant but it would have been courteous to receive a phone call letting me now they were not going to start work that day. That did not happen 3 days in a row. The third day it did finally rain all day. When they showed up to work on a Thursday the crew got right to work and worked very hard all day till 6:30 pm. They probably would have finished in one day but they did not have quite enough shingles to finish the job. I was very impressed at how diligent the roofers were and their cleanup crew was top notch! The roofing crew came back the next day as well as two Gutter and Downspout installers. Work was completed in 4 hours and was very professional. Clean up for me was only very minimal. I was worried about my planted borders but no shrubbery or flowers were harmed-bonus! Overall I would recommend Preferred Roofing to friends and neighbors and use them again.
Description of Work: Replace existing roof shingles, gutters and downspouts.

The crew was right on schedule and worked to complete the job despite bad weather blowing in! They made sure the exposed roof was covered with tarps and were back at it once it was safe to return to the roof and completed the job that evening. Two of the crew returned the next day to complete the vents and be sure that all was complete and did a final site inspection. Steve was very easy to work with, gave us a good overview of the job and stayed in communication with us from start to finish. We are very happy with the job.

Steve returned my call immediately and had an estimate to me in a few days. Everything was clearly presented and the final price reflected the estimate. He scheduled my job within a week or so of my acceptance. He was a total professional. Steve and his crew tore off the old roof, replaced boards, and installed a new roof over two days. There was a pretty nasty storm in the middle of the job that complicated things, so it's possible they could have finished in one day. The new roof looks great. The difference between the quality of the old roof and new roof is like night and day. It's been almost a month since the job and I still haven't found any nails or construction debris in my yard. They did a great job of cleaning up. I'm totally satisfied. One less thing to worry about!

Steve Case and Preferred Roofing & Exteriors were great to work with. We had called 5 companies for estimates of which we immediately dropped one since they put us on hold for a long time. We finally hung up. The remaining companies came out in a reasonable timeframe to look at the roof. One of the companies stated it would take 4 to 5 days for us to receive the quote (it took almost 3 weeks to get it). The quotes ranged from 10K to over 21K. We were not only replacing our roof, but also 3 old, poorly installed, skylights. All the companies were recommending the same brand of replacement skylights. Preferred Roofing?s price was the best out of all of them. Steve also provided the most detailed information about our existing roof and what they would need to do to replace the skylights. The crew arrived on time,on the scheduled day. Later in the day, the weather changed and it started to rain. While this was supposed to be a one day job, due to the weather, they needed to stop work, extending the job an extra day. Before they left for the first day, they made sure that everything was cleaned up, including running a magnet over the area. They also took care to make sure that any exposed areas of the roof were covered and sealed to prevent any leaks from the rain until they could finish. This was trickier than normal due to the skylights. They were able to return the next day to complete the job. The roof and skylights look great. We have had a number of very heavy rains since they finished and there has not been a single leak anywhere. Steve also followed up with us to make sure that there were no issues and we were happy with the job. To sum it up, they had the best prices and, in my opinion, did the best job. I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a replacement roof.
