I am very displeased by the attitude of the company as exhibited by its representative, Judy.
Description of Work: I called CRC Concrete Raising and Repair early July, 2012 regarding raising my uneven driveway slabs. Shortly thereafter on July 19, 2012 I received an estimate from Paul. I spoke with Paul and he was very pleasant and informative and I had a very positive feeling from his phone call. The estimate seemed to be very fair as well. When I called to schedule the service, I was told that the company was very busy due to the season (summer) which was understandable, and I told Paul to call me when the company was available to perform the services. On August 10, 2012 I received a call from Judy at CRC who told me the services can be performed on August 15, 2012, but when I said that I would not be home on that date due to my work schedule and asked if it could be rescheduled for any day other than August 15th or August 30th since I wanted to be present when the work was performed, she said that August 15th was the only date the company could service me and she didn't know when the company would be working again in my area again (the company's location is only a mile or two from my home) and couldn't give me an alternate date. I told her that I already waited a month and was under a time constraint as I wanted to place my home on the market for sale and needed this done soon. She stated that nothing could be done about this but will call me if and when there is availability but didn't know if or when that would be. I said that due to my time constraint and with no knowledge when or if the company would call, I may have to have the work done by someone else. Judy then rudely said to go ahead with another company and hung up on me. There was no apology or attempt to accommodate my situation at all--it was blatantly take it or leave it. I would have liked CRC to perform the job, but I cannot be in limbo continuing to wait for the company not knowing when or even if the company will get around to performing the repair. I'd like to believe that this attitude was solely that of Judy, but as the company's representative, she does a great disservice to her company.

Response from CRC Concrete Raising & Repair
"No good deed goes unpunished!" sure rings true here. We tried to accommodate the Member's request to get their work done asap and this report is what we got. The Member was told by CRC that we were 4-6 weeks out to get their work done. He requested that we try to get them done sooner if possible. He did not give any reason why. When another client in their area (we schedule 3-5 jobs in the same general area on a given day) called to postpone their work scheduled for 8/15/12, in an effort to help the Member, we put them in that slot. Please NOTE: this was 3 weeks from the date they signed the contract; 1-3 weeks earlier than promised. Judy called to notify the Member that we were able to do their job early - on 8/15 - and spoke to the Member's wife. The Member's wife informed Judy that 8/15 would not work and asked for another date. Following normal procedure, Judy told her that she didn't have the date available - that she does not do the scheduling - but that someone would contact her with the new date. Per Judy, the Member's wife became upset when Judy could not give her another date right then. Judy told her that she would talk to the person who does the scheduling and that she would be contacted with a date shortly. The Member's wife became very upset and unreasonable in her demands and told Judy that she would cal XYZ mudjackers and have them come out right away and do the work. I spoke to 2 of my employees that were in the office with Judy during this phone call - one at the desk next to Judy. Judy was friendly and professional at all times (as she always is) throughout the conversation. And she did not hang up on the Member's wife! The Member's wife was demanding and unreasonable and Judy handled her the best she could. CRC tried to accommodate the Member's request to be moved up on our very full/busy schedule; what we get was this negative report! Please NOTE: I tried to reach the Member several times on Monday morning (the call took place on Friday afternoon) and have left messages with their receptionist at their law firm. I have not received a call back. At this point, I will make no further efforts to reach them or to put them on the schedule. If they would like to call our office and speak to me, I would be happy to speak to them. Please, all Angie's List Members: feel free to contact our office at any time. You will find Judy, as well as all our team members, friendly and accommodating! Patricia J. Petersen

I appreciated their honesty with the situation.
Description of Work: We had seepage in our basement after a lot of rain, high water table. CRC sent a gentleman out to give us an estimate on repairs. When he saw what was happening, he told us that the problem was not from cracks in the walls, but from seepage at the seam between the wall and the floor, and that CRC did not work with that particular problem. I appreciate their honesty and telling us up front what they could and could not do. We took their suggestion on how to address the problem properly.

The men were very helpful and answered my questions. They arrived a little late, but that was because there was more to do at the previous job than originally thought. They went straight to work, did the job and cleaned up after they were done. I would hire them again.
Description of Work: I recently bought a home. There was a large area under the porch that animals had been living in. CRC came out and gave me an estimate. . They would completely fill the area under the porchand also undter four blocks of sigewalk where they may have been digging. I also had some chickenn wire that I wanted to bury in the cement to discourage them from trying to dig in again. They actually put it in the cement for me. They filled everything that I could see, and cleaned up after themselves.

Thank you so much for your report. We are very pleased that you are happy with our crew's work. Hopefully between filling the voids and your wire mesh, your animal problem is gone. If not, we can always recommend a reputable wildlife control company. We work with several in the Chicagoland area as your issue is very common and we fill a lot of voids under stoops, steps, etc. Our void filling work is only one step in the process of eliminating animal burrowing. Please contact us if you ever have any questions or concerns,

I was very happy with their services. We had a smaller job so had to pay the minimum charge, however the walkway was so uneven it was a safety hazard that we absolutely had to fix. The team was very professional and believe it or not, clean! The team leader was there to kick off the job and greet me and then left the team to complete the work. They were working on a front walkway around a landscaped area and they completed all of the work without any damage to our landscaping. They hosed off our driveway and gave me tips for regular maintenance. The walkway looks fabulous, is now perfectly even, and I would recommend them to anyone who has a smaller job, they will do it with professionalism and they will respect your property while they do it.

I think that they should be honest and up front. They came and saw my problem and offered to fix it. When I complained that they didn't do a good job, they suggested that I hire someone else to take care of it.
Description of Work: I hired them to fill in a concrete mixture into my front steps because there was a problem with animals living under them. They told me that there was something in the concrete solution that would prevent animals in the future. There were 2 things in the contract specifically that they did not do including (1) the owner (me) being present when the work was done and (2) that they would consult me before any additional work/expense. They did neither. They ensured me that the steps would be entirely filled in, but they are hollow sounding now. I kept calling them to come and correct the work, and even contacted my credit card company to withhold payment, and then they said that I just didn't want to pay. The salesman (who is on a leave of absence every time I call) said that the work would be guaranteed. When I mentioned that to have them come fix it, they said they don't guarantee their work. The salesman was just telling me what I wanted to hear. They always had excuses, too, why they couldn't be there on time to do the work.

CRC contracted with the Member to raise and stabilize her PATIO and to stabilize and void fill her STOOP. I am sending the contract by e-mail. Please note: the contract did not call for any work on her step. Although we complied with the Member's original request and with the contract, CRC is willing to do the following: - CRC will void fill / stabilize the Member's front step utilizing our premium portland cement slurry and providing the same warranty as she has on her patio and stoop for $150. This is the same price she would have paid if she had contracted to have the work done at the same time as her other work. This is far below our minimum charge and below our cost to go out to do this work. This offer will be effective upon verification from the Member that her credit card payment to us back in April will not be reversed. CRC suggests that she have her critter problem resolved prior to our doing any further work as we are not responsible for nor will we come out to repair damage done by critters. Our filling a void under her step will not prevent the animals from continuing to burrow. It is only one step in the process of getting rid of the problem and the process is usually spearheaded by a reputable animal/wildlife control company.

CRC showed professionalism from start of job to finish. Everyone I spoke with was very knowledgeable of the processes being used which gave me assurance that the job would be done effectively. I am very pleased with the overall results. Although CRC was the highest bid I received out of 3 (in fact, they were considerable higher than the other 2), I selected CRC because they appeared to be the most knowledgeable of what needed to be done to correct the problems I needed fixed.

Thank you so much for your report. We're very proud of our team and very pleased that you had a good experence with CRC. And yes, we tend to be priced a bit higher than what some may call our competitors. But, there is a reason for that. Our process and the materials that we use allow us to provide the longest and best warranty in the industry. It costs us a bit more (and therefore costs our customers a bit more) in equipment and material but the result is worth it and is something that our customers want. And our experienced and professional crew makes it all happen! Ask us why "We're not your grandfather's mudjackers!"

I submitted a request via email and received a call the next day. They headed out within a few days to take a look at my patio. I received a call from him on site and he talkied through his recommendations and cost. We considered our scope of work and CRC didn't hestitate to go back out to the house and take another look and provide an additional cost estimate. After getting estimates from 2 other companies, we liked CRC the best and found their rates to be competitive. On the day of the job they were prompt and efficient in their work. I was amazed to see our patio, side walk, driveway, and front walk when they were done. It looked so great!

The experience started out well - a rep came out to the house within a week of my call and provided an estimate and also explained what would be done and how and some background on the process. I was told someone would call with a date as to when the work would be performed. A crew showed up (no advance call or notice) and raised the 2 slabs while I was at work and not able to see what they were doing. The actual work on raising the concrete was quite good. The clean up was average; nothing great. Dust was all over everything and a few items that were on the work area were thrown on the grass and not replaced. I would have moved these had I been given notice they were coming out. The worst was the back area - the concrete slab was up against a wooden step to the deck; the step is about 7 feet in length and attached to the deck. Although I specifically discussed with the estimator the step should not be touched in any case - even if this meant not raising the concrete fully - the crew ripped off the step. The step is damaged beyond repair, and was thrown partially on grass and partially in a flower bed. I spoke directly with the original estimator who was not pleasant, hinted this was my problem and grudgingly said he would talk with the crew and that someone would contact me. No one has contacted me. I suppose I am now stuck with the cost of replacing the step. I gave a C rating on quality to reflect very good work on raising the concrete and terrible work as to the damaged step. The lack of communication was also sub-par. I would not use this company in the future.

Dear Member: I am very disappointed that you feel that we did not do a good job for you. This is not what we strive for nor is it the normal reaction we receive from our clients. We do over 700 jobs each year with terrific results and happy clients over 99% of the time. We realize that we can't please everyone although we sure try. After reading your report, I pulled your paperwork and am very puzzled by what you have said: 1) You called on Friday, October 21 and requested an estimate as soon as possible. One of our consultants was at the property to meet you on Monday morning (Oct 24th). He assessed the problems, presented you with an estimate to raise 1 piece of front service walk and 1 piece of patio slab. You signed the agreement as presented on the spot. Our consultant reviewed the process with you and explained that the office would call you with a date when we would be in your area raising concrete. 2) Prior to our contacting you with a date for the project, you called with a date that you wanted us to do the work. I personally spoke to you that day and explained again that we are not in every area every day and that we would call you when we had a date scheduled for work in your area. I explained that it is best if you can be there but that we raise a lot of concrete with no one home (as long as we are raising areas that are outside and accessible). Although you weren't happy that we couldn't do it on the date you wanted, you agreed that if you could not be there, we would go ahead and do the job. At that time, you also told me that this was your elderly parents home and that you did not want anyone to collect money from them; that you would be handling payment. 3) On Friday, November 4th, I called you (and the other clients on the schedule) to let you know that you were on the schedule for a concrete raise on Monday, November 7th. I had to leave a voice mail message. On Monday, November 7th prior to the crew arriving, I called you again. I had a concern: our crew always rings the bell and then knocks to let any occupants know that they are there and will begin work shortly. Since you didn't want your elderly parents disturbed regarding payment, I didn't know if you wanted our crew to ring/knock and disturb them that way. You did not return either of my calls. 4) Our crew arrived at the property at 10:05 a.m. - you were not there but the crew chief said there was a "90 year old woman in the house". They completed the job at 11:10 a.m. after successfully raising the piece of front service walk and the patio slab per contract. In fact, per job notes, in order to raise, pitch and stabilize the patio, the crew had to sawcut the slab (it extended on under the deck) - $5.50 per lineal foot per the contract - and move the step (also chargeable for time). We did not charge you extra for either althougth the contract called for it. In addition, per our job notes and per your note above, the crew also had to remove items from the work area. Please note: you were contacted on the Friday before the job that we were coming out on Monday. It was up to you to remove the items prior to our arriving. But, the crew removed the items and once again, there was no additional charge. Again, please note that our crew moved the step and items. They did not rip, throw, etc. But, just as it was your responsibility to move the items prior to our arriving (per the contract), it was also your responsiblity to move them back, not ours. Member, it just so happens that Alexa, our inside sales associate and scheduler, was out of town in very early November. That is why I personally took your call to our office during the first week of November and then made the call to you on Nov 4 and again on Nov 7. We keep records of every call we have with clients - in bound and out bound - and our crew keeps notes on what takes place during the project. It appears that the lack of communication is not ours, but is yours. I can leave messages but I can't make you listen to them or respond. In addition, we have no notes or recollection of any discussion of us not doing the patio once the crew arrived. The crew does work per signed contract. If you didn't want the patio raised, we apolgize for the misunderstanding but, in order that things like this don't happen, we follow the contract term "All verbal agreements between contractor and buyer involving job descriptions prior to contract signing are void unless written and signed by both parties on this contract." Our consultants understanding after presenting the estimate to you and discussing the project with you was that you wanted the patio raised. He wrote the contract that way and that is what you agreed to. We take our quality workmanship, customer service and our integrity very seriously. I personally feel that your report and grade are unfair. We went above and beyond with the extra service and extra work performed. And your accusations about lack of communication are unfounded. Sincerely, Patricia J. Petersen, V.P. Owner

Ultimately we received a lower price from another Angie's List company, but had a really good experience with CRC.
Description of Work: Called CRC to provivde an estimate on foundation crack repair. Scheduling was easy and the gal on the phone took our details and asked good questions to ensure they could help us. The technican was prompt and recommended their services and provided a quote. He also showed us around outside where the ground around our house was graded towards the house, recommended adding a few more gutter downspouts and extending the downspouts we had to divert rainwater away from the house. He also suggested working with our neighbors to redirect their downspouts so they were not pointing towards our house.

We appreciate your nice report. If we can ever be of service, please do not hesitate to contact us. We know that we are not the cheapest (and we don't try to be). The product we use is specially formulated for us and shipped in from out of state. It is a bit more expensive than what our competitors get locally but we feel that it is worth it. With a life-of-structure warranty, we want the peace of mind that we will not be going back to our clients' homes or buildings (except to help them with new issues that may arise).

Did not successfully raise & level sidewalk. The walk was tilted towards the house but was level. After the work was done part of the walk was level and part was not creating an uneven surface. This makes it harder to walk on than before. I would be happier if I had not had this work done. Their performance did not match their promise.

This is our first experience with a Member that used Angies List to try and negotiate - or more accurately threaten - their way to a lower price. The Member was present throughout the entire project. Our crew raised and stabilized a badly poured and very sunken walk as best as possible - taking the time (an extra 45 minutes) to try additional techniques at the Members request and at our company's expense. We did not charge him for the extra work or for the sawcutting (although the contract called for it). In fact, because it did not raise as much as he or we would have liked, we provided a large discount - $225 - on the $800 contracted price. His comment to me? "I am an Angies List Member. I will give you a 'satisfied' report if you change the price to $375." As we did the job per contract, the price should have been $800. We feel we were more than fair in not charging him for the extra time and sawcutting and, in addtion, providing the $225 discount. We were not surprised to see the Member's uncomplimentary report as that is what is said he would do unless we changed our price to his price. We are a company that is fair and ethical. Our crews and employees work hard and do excellent work. We promise to raise, level, stabilize, void fill, etc. as best as possible. We only can work with what is given us. We pride ourselves in our great reputation with homeowners, community associations, municipalities and the commercial/industrial markets.

Barry came by the house to do an estimate, arrived on time, was polite. Explained everything that they would do, how they would do it, and the price was competitive. Booked them to do the work, and the office confirmed a date about 2 weeks later. Crew arrived on time and got right to work. The end result is great, in that all of our squares now pitch away from the house and allow water to flow away from the foundation. My only disappointment is the large gaps left between two of the squares and our home's foundation ... the crew had to cut the concrete at the point where it met the house, under our brick front steps, and as such, a large 1-1/2 inch gap resulted. Cut marks were not exact, either. We have a masonry firm coming to re-caulk the exterior of the house (where brick meets concrete sidewalk) and smooth the resulting cuts this week. Overall, though, we're happy with it.
Description of Work: Repair / raising of concrete squares & sidewalk on the edge of our house, to eliminate wrong pitch (squares leaning towards house, allowing water to puddle & stand at foundation's edge).

Thank you for taking the time to write and submit your report. We are happy that the concrete raising went well and that you are happy. Regarding the needed caulking, please note that we do caulking and if you had contacted Barry, he would have been happy to come out and do an estimate for the work. I apologize if we did not communicate that option to you. But, we do provide a Commonly Asked Questions card to each of our customers at the completion of the concrete raising work with instructions and suggested products to do the caulking yourself. It is not a difficult repair and the materials are very inexpensive. This is an option many of our customers choose. Thank you again for your report.

Told them we just had sod, no trampling the front lawn......they did it anyway and killed the sod As for the work itself, they totally cracked 2 of the panels while raising them and then used cement to repair (very poorly at that) - None of the panels butted up any longer either, their were gaps between them.... Also used our front water spicket and left the water dripping out for 3 days while we were on vacation during their job and into the weekend. I phoned and talked to the woman who handles their office, voiced my complaints, and was told that raising sometimes cracks and leaves gaps..........VERY VERY MISLEADING when they claim that their service should be doing just the opposite!!!! I even wrote a complaint on the payment stub I sent in with my check.......not one call from upper management to talk to me about the problems I had and are still having.......they just don't care once you pay them. Now this year the spot they cemented is totally cracked and separated, and the gaps look even worse...........total waste of money to have them do work!!! Don't waste your money like I feel I did with this company.
Description of Work: recently had sewer line replaced and there was settlement of the ground causing the sidewalk to appear slanted..........CRC mudjacked and raised the lower panels up to level

Response from CRC Concrete Raising & Repair
Dear Member, I read your report this week and immediately pulled out our documentation from our file and from our project software/database. For both you and our other Angie’s List clients, I would like to respond and clarify. On 4/15/10, you requested us to do an estimate for you to raise your front service walk. On 4/21/10 Paul met with you and left you our Estimate/Proposal to raise 5 pieces of front service walk that had sunk 4” and had slid under your front stoop over the years. The goal - see the Estimate/Proposal - was to set the step height to code (correct the drastic step up to the first step) and to reduce dangerous trip hazards as best as possible. On 5/5/10 (not July 19, 2010 as indicated in your report) our crew raised your front walk, set the step height to code and reduced/eliminated the trip hazards. You let us know that you would be out of town for 3 days at that time – but to go ahead and do the work. So, on 5/6/10 we sent you an invoice for the agreed upon price of $440 if paid within 7 days of completion (the due date). If paid late, after 7 days, the early payment discount of $60 goes away. I did not hear from you or receive payment so on 5/21/10, I personally left you a message to remind you of the past due invoice and to offer to let you retain the early payment discount if you either called to make payment arrangements or paid by 5/26/10. If we did not hear back from you, both the discount and the warranty would be gone. On 5/22/10 we finally heard from you. This was over 2 weeks after the job was completed! No complaints until I called to try and collect payment. In response to the complaints in your report: 1) Our crews are as careful as possible not to disturb surrounding landscaping when they raise concrete. But, they and their equipment must have access to the area to be raised. They may have had to walk on your sod, but they do not “trample” or “kill” surrounding landscaping. Your new sod was right at the area that needed to be raised. Our crews are complimented every day on their care and professionalism and we have been told they leave the premises neater and cleaner than when they begin. 2) Per the job report completed by our crew chief, the first slab by the step cracked as the crew raised it. As disclosed to you prior to the work being performed (take a look at your Estimate/Proposal), due to the nature of concrete, there is a chance that cracks may occur. It doesn’t happen often because of the technique and precautions that our crews use, but depending on conditions, it can happen despite all the precautions. Here, the concrete slab had sunk drastically, had slid under the stoop/step and, on top of that, the entire service walk had been poured very thin (take a look). 3) When we raise concrete, we are able to reduce/eliminate vertical offsets, but we cannot slide concrete to close horizontal offsets / gaps. These gaps should be filled to prolong the concrete raising repair. We provide information to our clients regarding a cost-effective way to fill those gaps in our “Common Questions” left behind after we complete the work. If you need another copy, please contact our office. 4) As for the dripping water, we apologize if our crew left your spigot dripping. Although they carry their own water for making the cement slurry used to raise your concrete, they will use our client’s hose to wash down the concrete slabs to keep the area clean. Our crew is very careful with our clients’ property and I have to admit we rarely have a complaint such as yours. But, if they did not shut down the water properly, again, we apologize. I’m sorry to hear that you feel we did not address your issues. But, it appears from our notes and your report that we discussed your issues with you when you called. If you have further questions, please feel to contact me at 847-808-7400 or at Patty@WeCanRaiseIt.com. We take any and all customer concerns very seriously. But, here we feel our crew did a good job of making your home safer, reduced your trip hazard liability, accomplished the goals you shared with us, and did all this with what we were given (badly sunken concrete, concrete slid over the years and jammed under the step/stoop, sewer line issues, sodded before we did the work instead of after…). Thank You, Patricia J. Petersen, V.P.

Excellent service and professionalism. Estimator arrived on time and was very nice and detail oriented. Total cost was their minimum service charge. Only issue with price was the addition of a fuel surcharge, which Im not a big fan of (fuel cost should be priced into the overall service instead of a separate line item). I scheduled service and I didnt even need to pay at the time - instead, they offered to invoice me once the job was complete. A+ ON INVOICING - most contractors want money up front. Crew arrived on time, and completed work within two hours. Now my walkway and step look great, water drains away from house and foundation, and for mudjacking (which is a dirty business to start with) things actually looked good. The concrete color wasnt an exact match, but I was able to get it really close to the worn concrete look with some dark gray paint and some ash. I would use CRC concrete services again without hesitation. I reccommend them.

We have a basement to outside staircase that was leaking water during rain through the stairwell walls. Drain tile providers wanted to install tile, sump pumps, etc for about $5,000. Based on the the reviews and web info, I called the Crack Team about their injection process. Paul and his team know their stuff. It took 3 tries but they stopped the water. And didn't charge any more. I waited to review them to see how will the fix will last. Six months later and everything is dry. I would always recommend you call Paul first before you do anything else regarding basements and water.

Thank you for your report. And your experience is very common. Many waterproofing companies will recommend extensive repairs - including drain tile, etc. - when a simple inexpensive repair is all that is needed to solve the problem. Our goal is to provide the most permanent cost-effective solution to our customers. Thanks for the opportunity to provide our services!
