Failed to fix problem. Failed to honor warrantee and follow up with evaluation of the failure of their work in spite of repeated requests and their promise to make site visit to evaluate failure of work. This is a followup alert that Patty Peterson and CRC concrete do not honor their warrantee nor do they honor their written promise (documented by archived email) to make a site visit and inspect the failure of their work. I advise carefully reading reviews that document this company's failure to honor their warrantee as well as even inspect their work to evaluate for validation of warrantee work. Do not be fooled into using this company if a warrantee is important in making your decision.

I called CRC and told them that my garage was getting water during heavy rains because it was at the low point of the alley. I said I would like them to come raise the garage, pour in a few inches of cement and then place the garage on top. They said this is something that they could do. I set up an appt AND was required to pay the 85 service call fee in advance which would be credited to any work was done. Paul came out and was very nice. However, he said he could not do the work and was referring me to someone else. I am not entirely sure why the work could not be done other than him saying it won't work I appreciate him being honest and telling me he didn't think they could do it. However, what I think was very poor customer service was that when I called the office to get my $85 refunded- they refused to provide me a refund!!!

When the issue of the concrete not being raised was brought up to the co-owner, Paul,(while he was still onsite) he stated that nothing else could be done because the concrete slab was too heavy. He seemed frustrated that we expressed any concern with the project. The discussion turned argumentative and contentious with Paul indicating that this was our fault for not identifying these issues before. He stated that he did not have "x-ray" vision in terms of knowing the thickness of the concrete, but that we, as homeowners, should know how thick our concrete is. He also indicated that if we didn't pay that we could have a lien put against our house and that attorneys would get involved. Paul then indicated that they observed how thick the concrete was upon using their first drill piece. We asked if CRC normally alerts customers during the middle of a project if there is an issue so a decision can be made on how to proceed. Paul said that he has done that before, but he didn't do that with us. Had this step taken place, a more reasonable resolution could have been determined. Before leaving Paul told us to "keep the check" that we had written out and handed to him, indicated that he would speak with "Patty" and that "it will get worked out." On 11/30/15 my husband contacted CRC and spoke with Patty. At no point during the conversation, which was even more contentious and combative than the discussion with Paul, was there any attempt at resolution. He was repeatedly told that it was our fault and that CRC doesn't have "x-ray" vision for these types of jobs. Patty stated that CRC was brought out to support the concrete underneath. My husband stated that our contract called for the concrete to be raised, that we were home the entire time and this could have been resolved or a more informed decision could have been made. Patty indicated that CRC has no liability or responsibility to repair any of the damage they had caused to our basement wall (or anything else) or to fulfill the expectations of the concrete being raised. My husband and CRC ended a very unproductive 15-20 minute conversation with no offers of resolution and he was told again that their attorney would get involved. Over the years we've had a great deal of remodeling and improvements done to our home. We've worked with every type of professional; painters, plumbers, electricians, general contractors, you name it. I've never had an experience with such an unprofessional and flat out rude company. After our experience and reading so many similarly horrible reviews (and rebuttals from the company that place the blame on the customer) on numerous websites, it's a wonder this place is still in business. Please do not use this company.
Description of Work: CRC Concrete Raising & Repair came to our home to raise a concrete path leading up to our front stoop. However, during the process, CRC cracked the foundational wall in our basement causing water to seep in and failed to raise the concrete.

We did not do the work. But, I would consider them in the future. Estimator was punctual and professional. I think part of the reason for the high estimate is that the scope of work was relatively small and their location is over an hour from my home.

There is still a large void under the step. They did raise the squares somewhat but they cracked one of the squares all the way across They took a chunk out of 2 of the other squares & they shifted one of them sideways so that it no longer is in a straight line with the other squares. The holes they drilled in order to fill are very noticeable & unattractive looking. They were also supposed to raise on single square by my front walk which is not any better now than it was before. All in all I would say it was a terrible experience and my sidewalks look much worse now than they did before I spent the $575.00. When I complained to the company they said it was my fault because I didn't stand out in the freezing cold and watch the workers the entire time.
Description of Work: They were to raise 6 squares of sidewalk on the side of my house & fill a large void under the step by my side door. They were also supposed to raise one square by my front door.

This company does not honor it's warranty. Patti Peterson, CRC Viking, is non responsive most of the time and makes promises that are not kept in spite of my contacting Mr Robert Zidar who is the nationwide franchisor of CRC. Mr Zidar emailed Patti Peterson requesting that my warranty be honored. This has not been done. On Angies List Patti Peterson made a commitment to make a site visit to inspect the failure of their work but this has not been honored. Complaint mediated by Angie's List resolution department not resolved by Patti Peterson's company. The company name was changed to Viking for reasons unknown. Is this to avoid multiple complaints due to failure of workmanship? Failure of this company to honor warranty, timely "in warranty "requests that warranty be honored, promises to make site visit for inspection, franchisor request to Patti Peterson to honor warranty and Angies list attempts to resolve

The raising of the steps went well. It was a difficult task since there were 4 steps and a concrete landing. Steps are adjacent to a crawl space underneath the building. BUT didn't realize that contractor had pumped an additional 400 lbs of Portland cement into the crawl space until I went down there for some supplies about 3 months later. The cement destroyed some inexpensive fixtures I had stored there for several years as well as some maintainence supplies, etc. Talked to Patty, CRC owner, I believe, who was not helpful, did not want to hear me out, rude, told me I was stupid, etc. Husband of owner chimed in from background the same way and then was hung up on. After another call to talk to husband, I somehow convinced him to come out and look. When he came out, he apologized for being rude but said I should have know about what was underneath the steps and it was not his problem, and he refused to do anything about removing the concrete or paying for the damaged property. Many excuses, like I should have known about potential problem, serious illness in family, as an excuse for both of their incredible rudeness. To his credit, he did refer me to a local contractor who removes junk. HE was very nice and understanding and cleaned out concrete and other property CRC destroyed. I will post a comment about that company shortly. DO NOT USE CRC, I absolutely can't understand why they are still in business. In my opinion, they shouldn't be.

Work performed came with a four year warranty. Brochure given with proposal mentions that company "provides the finest concrete raising service in America. We back our work by offering a warranty on all our completed projects". Contract says "all materials and labor are guaranteed for FOUR Years". I will describe the communications over the last two years; the WORST PART IS THAT THE COMPANY (PATTY) LIED, and I would never work with any company that is not honest with their customers. We hired the company and the services were performed in August 2010. In the fall of 2012 (two years after) I noticed that the back patio had sunk again and water was not flowing away from the house. I called and was told that they would come out and look at it. After a second call, Paul came out to examine and agreed that it had sunk, blamed it on the materials which were not their fault, but agreed that they would fix it, but that it might not happen until 2013. I called again on 4/12/13, 7/16/13 and 9/4/13. I was given some story about their having been some deficiencies in the materials, and that there was the worst drought ever, and these were not the fault of the company, but that they would still honor the warranty. It was just that they could not survive doing only warranty work, and had to mix it in with new business as well. As the end of the four year warranty period was less than a year away I was concerned that company was just stalling, and then at some point would say that this was past the warranty period. On 10/1/2013, I called Patty again to express my frustration and concern. She sent me an email which says the following "CRC will raise the area of your patio that we previously raised and that has sunk per Paul's visit and notes. It is noted that your request for this repair was well within the warranty time frame. Our plan is to get to your repair prior to the end of this season." On 4/21/14 I called again to say I wanted to get this taken care of; it was becoming a problem with water sitting on the patio and not flowing away. I was told that there were too many of these repair jobs that had re-sunk, it wasn't their fault- it was because of materials, the soil and the drought, and they were NOT GOING TO COME BACK AND FIX IT UNLESS IT WAS DUE TO THEIR NEGLIGENCE. And when I mentioned the letter, she told me it didn't matter; they were not going to honor it. What they were going to do is come back sometime in May and make a new proposal and try and work with the customers With this I decided I don't want them anywhere on my property, AND WOULD NEVER WORK WITH A DISHONEST COMPANY LIKE THIS. I hired another company to re-raise the concrete and had the work done this past week. (By the way, he did not understand why the drought/soil would have effected the re-sinking of the patio; they have not had similar problems with work they have done over the last couple of years) I cannot evaluate whether their excuses were valid (ie- materials, drought etc), but I can evaluate their dishonesty in that they told me for two years they would get to it, they put it in an email that they would fix it, but then later on said they would not honor it because they were too busy with new customers..
Description of Work: Raised and leveled a back patio and front sidewalk which had sunk, so that there would no longer be gaps between the concrete and the stoops, and so that rain water would drain away from the house.

There was a written four year warranty for this work. After a year and half, the cement started to slowly crack, I did not act on the warranty at that time since it was not too bad. After about three years the cement started to sink and crack again, I did reach out to them regarding the warranty via a phone call. I had to call several times to get a response. The receptionist answered the phone and immediately after I stated why I was calling due to previous work rendered, she said that they cannot fix it because it is the soils fault, not their fault. I finally was able to speak with Patty, which I believe she has something to do with the ownership, she again began to inform me that it is the soil in Illinois, it is not due to poor work. I asked how they could possibly know this without coming to look at it. She kept making excuses that they are too busy with other customers right now to check back on previous work. She also cut me off and stated that she is a lawyer and she does not have to honor the warranty. I finally decided to reach out to a higher department, since this is a franchisee. I reached out to the franchiser and he then reached out to them two or three times to have them look into this issue. They have yet to reach out to me and have also disregarded his request as well. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE PROMISE TO COME AND RE DRILL TO CHECK THE WORK HAS NOT BEEN HONORED FOR MORE THAN A YEAR. WHEN I TRIED TO RESOLVE THIS WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF AN ANGIE'S LIST REPRESENTATIVE, THE VIKING CRC COMPANY APPARENTLY TOLD THE ANGIE'S LIST REP THAT THE WARRANTY TIME WAS NOW UP. (DOCUMENTED BY E MAIL TO ME FROM ANGIE'S LIST REP). CRC VIKING WAS NOTIFIED WELL IN ADVANCE, OVER ONE YEAR, BEFORE THE EXPIRATION DATE OF THE WARRANTY OF THE REQUEST FOR WARRANTY EVALUATION. THIS COMPANY JUST RAN OUT THE CLOCK. APPARENTLY THEY STILL USE A 4 YEAR WARRANTY AS AN INDUCEMENT TO OBTAIN BUSINESS, BUT BY THEIR OWN ADMISSION, THEY ALSO STATE THAT SOIL ISSUES ARE COMMON AND THEREFORE THERE WILL BE A SIGNIFICANT FAILURE RATE FOR WHICH THEY WILL DENY RESPONSIBILITY. IF IT IS KNOWN IN ADVANCE THAT THERE IS A HIGH FAILURE RATE, THE INDUCEMENT OF A 4 YEAR WARRANTY SEEMS DECEPTIVE IN VIEW OF THE FACT THEY WILL NOT RETURN TO CHECK THEIR WORK AND VERIFY SAME.
Description of Work: My back patio was cracked and sunken in; they raised the cement to bring up to being level and prevent more cracking.

Response from CRC Concrete Raising & Repair
In April 2010, the Member requested an assessment of their badly cracked and sunken concrete -2 patios and 1 piece of service walk. On May 7, 2010, the Member signed our agreement and requested that work be done - along with the option of 3 steps. Work was completed on 5/25/10, the Member was happy with the work and paid the crew with a credit card. Note: the Member gave us every indication that he was happy with the Price, Quality, Responsiveness, Punctuality and Professionalism of our Company. Our Company provides a 4-year warranty - the longest and best in the industry. But, we only warranty the work that we do - our material and our labor. It makes sense and it is all laid out for our customers in our contract. We DO NOT and CANNOT warranty agains drought, floods, subsoil movement and any other natural disaster. (We raise concrete - generically called mudjacking - and our process is based on a "maximum 2" hollow under slabs to be raised". What this means is we fill an approximate 2" void under the sunken slab and then throught volume and pressue, we rais the sunken slab as best as possible to original height. Our process is NOT "Soil Stabilization" which is an expensive, invasive process of injecting a grout material many feet down into subsoil to stabilize the subsoil. This process can cost 10s of thousands of dollars and is gererally not used in residential settings. Our process of raising concrete does not reach down to subsoil and we do not and cannot warranty against subsoil movement. Again, we only warranty the work that we do; we do not warranty against natural disasters such as drought and flood. In 2012 and 2013 we experienced the worst drought since the late 1950s. Subsoil across Illinois - in fact across the country - was drastically affected and caused issues not only with concrete slabs but with foundations, landscaping, farmland/ crops, etc. The lack of moisture/rain caused extreme drying, shrinking and movement of subsoil. In late 2012 and into 2013, when we started getting calls from customers about their raised concrete sliding, separating, buckling/heaving as well as sinking, we started investigating as the calls came in. After extensive time, energy and work, we saw over and over again that our work was good, our material (we use a premium Portland cement slurry that is impervious to water - does not get washed away - and has a high compression strength) was still there - right under the concrete that we raised. We were able to see this by redrilling the holes we used to originally inject our slurry. What had happened was subsoil had shrunk and everything above it dropped. Our material (and our labor) did not fail. At great expense, we are checking customers who call in with a "warranty" issue to see if it is truly a warranty or if they have a different problem going on. It is a slow process as we have a manager and a laborer meet with the customer, redrill 1-2 injection sites, drill 1-2 new sites, help the customer understand what they are seeing and then determine next steps. All this was explained several times to the Member. He can either choose to follow our process - we will contact him when we are doing "warranty" visits in his area or he can choose to go a different route - that is up to him. We are treating all customers - Angies List members and non-Angies List members - equally and according to area they are located in. I would appreciate an e-mail from the Member letting me know which he chooses. We are an honest, reputable Company that does quality work. But, we cannot provide free, expensive services ("warranty") that have nothing to do with the work that we performed. Unfortunately homeowners need to bear the brunt of the affects of the Drought of 2012-2013 (and the freezing/heaving, etc. that took place this past winter didn't help homeowners either!). We take full responsibility for failed material - that is what we are checking for and what we warranty. Respectfully submitted by: Patricia J. Petersen, President Viking Concrete Raising & Repair, Inc.

They contacted me right away and scheduled someone to come out. There was about a week after that where I didn't hear from them but they called back and said they're finalizing things and they're getting somebody out here. They seemed very professional over the phone and they provided a written quote. I asked them if they could follow me to a different location and quote in on a job and they were happy to do so. They were honest and open about what they do and about their pricing. They said they were not the cheapest but also told me they do quality work. Their personnel was personable, straightforward, and answered every question I asked but we really didn't end up going to them to get the work done.
