About a week before the installation Allied's salesman came over to measure our house to determine what size unit we needed. He also inspected our current unit to see exactly what needed to be replaced. He then presented us with several options and various prices. There was no pressure to buy now or anything else. Part of the proposal was to replace both the AC and the furnace. Allied sent a technician out to thoroughly inspect our current furnace at no charge. They determined that the furnace had several more years left in it so it was not necessary to replace it now. We decided to replace the AC only. The installation appointment was scheduled for 2 days later. On the appointment day the installers arrived on time and prepared to do the entire job. We needed to move the outdoor parts to a new location because of a deck expansion we are doing. That was handled just as we requested. The new platform was installed and looks great. The installers were very professional protecting our interior and exterior while working and cleaning up when finished. We have only had a chance to run the unit a few times since the installation because the weather has been cool, but on those few occasion the unit has performed flawlessly. I highly recommend Allied for any work. I have used them for about 15 years and have never been disappointed. Besides this new AC system Allied has reconfigured our basement ductwork prior to remodeling and installed a new hot water heater on a moment's notice when our old one died. They also do our annual maintenance and are always professionals.
Description of Work: Allied installed a new central air system in our house. They tested and measured several factors before recommending a Carrier system for us.

Very well. They were punctual and professional. They were the first to respond to my quote request - on a Sunday - and offered to refer me to a plumber who might be able to do the job that day. We instead chose to wait until the next day, Monday, and they came when promised, their office calling to verify the installers were there. Hauled old unit away and cleaned up after. Made sure our floors and carpets were protected.

The long ordeal with Allied starting in 09 when they installed the water heater since I was satisfied with the HVAC service. I have a 2nd story utility room and they replaced my 40 gal tank that was no longer warming up properly with a 50 gal tank. In 2010, the water heater began to leak into the ceiling below and I contacted Allied. Allied asked me to contact Rheem (the mfr) to initiate a warranty claim. I also contacted an independent plumber to provide an estimate who agreed the unit was most likely defective but was concerned that a inexpensive catch pan had not been installed beneath the unit since the unit was on the second floor (not originally installed) and noted that should have been a standard offering when installing a 2nd floor unit. Based on the pattern of leakage after providing pictures of the leakage to Rheem, Rheem agreed the unit was defective and offered a replacement at no cost, apart from install and delivery. Allied offered the replacement for free delivery and a discounted new install charge including a catch pan since they had not even offered the catch pan during the 2009 installation (I would have gladly paid the appx $50 in 2009 for the pan had I known such a thing existed). Hours after the 2010 replacement water heater was installed, a soldered hot water line joint had failed and was very lightly shooting a spray of hot water at the wall. I fixed temporarily with plumbers putty and the techs came out early the next morning to fix the joint. A week or so after Allied replaced the water heater, the new water heater began to leak into the pan from somewhere inside the unit. Over the following months, Allied techs made approximately 3 subsequent attempts to adjust and replace individual parts on the new unit to stop the leaking. The initial attempt I was charged $100 for with the subsequent visits for no charge except for minor charges on parts. On 1/12/11, Allied made their final attempt and the leaking did not stop and they then refused to send out any more techs after the leaking continued, essentially giving up. I called the plumber I had previously contacted, who over the phone suspected that the pressure relief tank attached above the water heater unit had failed. After a free inspection by the plumber, he confirmed the pressure tank above the unit was the culprit and replaced it for less than $100. In the eight months since, I've had no problems at all with the water heater and not a drop of leakage. Although the local business manager at Allied in the Libertyville office whom I spoke to by phone several times but never met was friendly and flexible on the costs and took some responsibility, overall, I feel like I vastly overpaid for Allied's technicians who were typically very friendly but ultimately not well enough trained to properly diagnose the issue that was quickly and accurately diagnosed by a plumber.
Description of Work: 2009 - 2nd floor water heater replacement/upgrade to 50 gal tank 2010 - defective water heater replaced; added aluminum catch basin under unit Between late 2010 and January 2011: Made several service call attempts for Allied to fix new water heater by replacing relief valve and other parts

My air conditioning system stopped working in the middle of a high 90 degree heat wave. They promptly scheduled me, and moved the service call up several hours when they had a cancellation. Upon completion of the repair, I asked the technician if he could perform the routine "annual services" on the air conditioner and furnace. He checked with his office, they said OK, and he performed the services. After leaving my home, he returned a few minutes later to correct a billing error that I had not noticed. I like this company's technical competency and integrity. I have used their services for a number of years on two homes, and will continue to use them in the future.

The owner's son came out and gave us an estimate. He was very entusiastic and knew what he was talking about. He gave me two quotes, one for the steam boiler and the other for a conversion to hot water. We opted for the conversion. Over a three or four month period they were here probably at least 50 times. They never changed the price or charged me extra for the extra time they put in. They spent far more time and dedicated their time to us. He did far more than they ever anticipated. They overcame many challenges and problems but remained diligent, ensuring our needs were met. Whenever I had a problem they were there within ten minutes, even at night. They really go out of their way and are dedicated to make the job right. I have a lot of experience with home repairs and Allied's performance was second to none. They essentially became part of our family. They deserve more than just an overall A rating, they superceded an A!!!

First let me preface this commentary with this.... I am, for one, a skeptic of reviews, as reviews can be all over the board, from poor to outstanding, and everything in between. Here is my own personal review of Allied Air Conditioning and Heating - Palatine IL. From the initial call to set up the sales person to come and provide the estimate , until the last screw was in place, was in fact a SUPERB experience. Maureen, the person that handles calls at the office, certainly knows the TRUE meaning of customer service. Kevin Fitzgerald, the sales person, certainly knows every aspect of the heating and cooling industry. His knowledge and guidance is a paradigm of how sales people should conduct business with prospective customers. The installers, Jason and Dan, are second to none in installers. Their knowledge and confidence certainly screams professionalism. Without ANY doubt Allied Air Conditioning is the company to call for ALL of your heating and cooling needs.
Description of Work: Replaced 23 year old heating and cooling system with a Carrier Infinity system. The job included modification of some of the existing duct work, as it was not sufficient when the house was built.

The good part: James showed up on time, inspected the A/C unit and thoroughly cleaned it. Everything checked out and I was glad he didn't try to sell some device or service we didn't actually need. I also told him that our second floor is considerably hotter than our first floor. I know this is typically the case to some degree, but we agreed that installing a damper in the ductwork would be an improvement. He didn't have the right sized part with him, so he wrote a note in his service report for the company to return to install the damper. The bad part: A few weeks go by with no follow-up from Allied, so I called and was passed around to several different employees over the course of a week. I referred them to the service report so they could see the instructions/specs from the technician (I had a copy of it right in front of me). I got a very unenthusiastic response and felt like they really didn't want to bother with it. The whole experience felt kind of strange, and I didn't want to spend any more time chasing after them. By this point the sweltering heat had broken and I figured I'd address the damper next year with a different company.

Allied was great to work with, from the initial service call to look at our non-functioning A/C unit to the estimation of a new unit. We had Allied install a new furnace and A/C, as well as the Infinity temperature control. My husband who is in construction and works on the commerical HVAC/Electric side is extremely pleased with the work Allied performed. He has mentioned more than once that the craftsmanship and attention to detail is excellent. We are very happy with our new units and will call them back in a year or so to upgrade our other furnace.

This started out without incident, but ended quite poorly. The serviceman showed up--no introductions, but pleasant enough. He got right to work. Please note--we were remodeling bathrooms this day. I immediately told Allied the water was off--he didn't feel this was an issue. When Allied was leaving, he explained he wasn't able to rinse the a/c unit, and suggested we do it later. A few hours later, I heard a faint beeping and came to discover the alarm was going off in the basement--water was gushing in near a window well, leaving 3-4 inches pooling across our storage and leaking into our newly floored bathroom. The cause of this water was the backyard hose near the A/C unit which was running at full force right into the window well/back stoop. Apparently, Allied forget the water was turned off and tried to rinse the A/C unit. When the water didn't come out, he left it, not realizing he had left it turned on. When the plumber turned the water back on the hose ran for several hours--we were working in the opposite side of the house and honestly never heard it. It didn't occur to me to check it because I didn't think the serviceman had even turned it on. Anyway, I called Allied, speaking with manager, Kevin. He was not very helpful, and certainly not apologetic in any way, shape or form. In fact, he tried to tell me it was my fault and/or the plumber's fault for not checking that water was running when the plumbing got turned back on. He also argued with me that his service worker would clearly not have even turned on the hose if I told him upfront that the plumbing was off. I explained that I really HAD told Allied and that no one had been in the yard to turn it on except this service worker. I also explained that the plumber and I were in the front of the house quite opposite where this occurred and we didn't hear it, pointing out that it all came down to the accidental negligence of his worker. Kevin said he would have to verify. He called back about an hour later and said that he would be coming out to look at the damage. Meanwhile, I spent the next hour cleaning up water & washing towels. About an hour after talking to Kevin, a man showed up at the door--Greg, Kevin's father. He assessed the bathroom and decided that the tiles would be usable again. He pulled them up and left them to air-dry saying he would be back the next day to lay them down. Though polite, he did not admit any responsibility , never apologized for any of the inconvenience and he too mentioned that the plumber should have checked it or that there must be problems with the house to leak like this. Next day, a third man showed up, put down the tiles and left. There has been no contact since. I really feel that at the very least an apology is in order. We are working within a very fine time-line to finish house projects to get our house on the market, and did not the added headache! It could have been handled so much better.

We knew in advance that our frnace was on its last leg (maybe toe is better put) and the service associate acknowledged this. He said he would repair it so it would operate but that it must be replaced if we wanted to be secure abouth having heat. Furhter he said that there were several financial programs (tax incentives, etc.) that could be applied to the net cost. After discussing this it became apparent that our best bet was to wait for our local gas company to implement an already announced rebate as compared to tax crredits. He agreed. He also ecxplained that since we have a 90% efficeint furnace we should replace it with one at least as effieicient vs an 80% efficient one - the reason was not to save on fuel cost or for his company to sell us a more costly unit - it was due to our flue and chimney that would have to be relined to prevent premature failure and in order to comply with the most current codes and safety regulations. (I went on line later and found this was in fact true). He asked if we would like an evaluation of the system by one of his companies engineers as this was best as compared to having him just install a new unit. He also volunteered that the unit we have may be oversized but that the engineer would be best to determint this. The service fee was their normal charge despite the amount of time he spent with us and in doing what he classified as an adjustment not a repair. A great representative of his company and their values. It was refreshing to get the straight scoop and not get the normal pressure to replace the furnace immediately.
Description of Work: The furnace did not turn on after the temperature dropped below that set on the thermostat. We could manuplate the thermostat to start the furnace, but again the furnace would not turn on automatically later. The service associate arrived on time and asked a series of questions regarding the problem. He explained the various potential causes and asked me to show him the furnace. (He ruled out the thermostat as one of the potential problems during the questionsing). He spend the better part of an hour in the house and found the problem to be quite simple - the ground wire was not secured properly on the ignitor. All works well as the temperature in the house now matches what we have programmed into our thermostat.
