Additional email - fortunerestorationbob@gmail.com Additional contact name - Mr. Bob Fortune, Mr. Tom Fortune.

"Tom Fortune is excellent. More than a year after Fortune Restoration painted the interior of my house, I discovered a water leak in my stucco dining room ceiling. I called Tom on his personal cell phone number that he gave me, asking for help. Without hesitation, Tom sent his crew to my house to scrap, plaster and repaint the damaged area FREE OF CHARGE. This is just incredible service and dedication to a customer. A job well done."

"Rob Reese is simply the best in the business, a fair and honest business owner who possesses great technical expertise. I am the treasurer of our condo association and we used AAA-1 back in 2012 for concrete block sealing and tuckpointing work. Our experience is that the water proofing product that he uses is of excellent quality and we were good for over 10 years. Fast forward to 2022 and it was time to reseal our concrete block again. I received 4 competitive bids for the work. Rob's proposal was the most complete, included the quality Chem-trete PB100 product (now costly due to pandemic induced supply chain issues - some of the other bidders included an inferior product), included a few extras but was still the most competitive proposal after fully levelling all of the bids. He included the cost of scaffolding (others wanted to hang a platform off of our roof), uses a very experienced team (some have been with him for decades), is well organized and bent over backwards to squeeze us in this Fall despite a full schedule. He completed the work quickly and professionally in 2.5 days (with a large crew) and communicated daily on what to expect the next day. I could not recommend Rob highly enough. We had a stellar experience and I would give him 10 stars if I could. They do excellent work and are true professionals."

8-10 employees. No subs. cost is determined by the job. No travel charges. No service fees. May contact through email. Additional contact: Jake.

"After receiving several estimates for the work ranging from $2,500 to over $15,000, I decided to proceed with JC & Son Masonry. Greg provided the initial estimate and his attention to detail, professionalism, and friendly / low-pressure demeanor impressed us from the beginning. He spent an hour walking around the property and noting the areas needing repair, took many pictures, and explained the scope of the work. He provided a detailed estimate with pictures and also made some helpful recommendations to address a drainage issue near our garage. When the time came to perform the work, Greg and his brother, Jake, sent their crew of skilled professionals, who showed up early every day exactly when they said they would, worked long hours (even in the summer heat), and did quality repairs. After the repairs were completed, Greg performed a "quality control" walk-through and noted a few areas needing touch up, which his crew promptly addressed the following week. I am very happy with work and would hire JC & Son Masonry again without hesitation. Greg and Jake run an old school (in a good way) family business that takes pride in performing quality masonry work. Highly recommended!"

3 EMPLOYEES. NO SUBS. CHARGES AN HOURLY RATE. NO TRAVEL CHARGES. Northsouth Masonry has been established as a corporation since 2001. We specialize in masonry restoration, grinding, tuckpointing and brick replacement on residential and lowrise commercial properties. We rebuild chimneys, parapet walls and replace lintels,We install glassblock windows we do caulking and waterproofing all to the nighest industry standards.. Dan has 29 years experience in the industry and spent many years working in Boston and Chicago high rises. He is a journeyman mason and holds a city of Chicago masons licence. Northsouth does not sub the jobs to other companies. Our own crew does each job and have been with us for over 10 years. We provide free estimates but charge a flat $15.00 charge for second trips to the same location if the job is outside Chicago. We have been on Angies List since 2001 and have received many super service awards over the past 14 years.

"Dan and his crew have done a few projects for us over the years and we couldn’t be more pleased. The first project was major - completely taking down the very porous brick comprising the first floor front faux balcony section of our three-flat 1911 vintage building, down into those walls in the basement, and repairing/replacing the moisture-damaged mortar between those bricks. Some of the bricks were replaced as well - not an easy feat as the front facade of our building is an unusual, grainy, sandstone type of brick. Dan matched it! The cause of the moisture seepage in the first place was that when our building was built, there was nothing placed between the limestone capstones on top of the “balcony” walls and that very porous brick. Dan and his crew placed an unobtrusive metal liner between those two sections which to this day, fifteen years later, is doing a great job protecting that brick. A substantial piece of corner limestone at the base of the building was crumbling; Dan had a new one made to mirror its opposite and put that in, too. Dan and his guys have come by whenever we’ve called to inspect our bricks and mortar. They did some repair work at the roofline recently, and also some touch-up mortar repair in a side common brick area. His prices are reasonable and they always do a great job. Always are here when they say they’ll be. They’re our go-to guys on anything bricks and mortar for our building!"

Masonry services FAQs

Masonry uses units like bricks, cement blocks, and stone with mortar between them. Mortar is generally made of sand and a type of cement. Examples of masonry include the brick or stone on a house, chimney, or freestanding wall. Concrete is a mixture of water, sand, stone aggregate, and other materials, and is poured into forms or moldings. Types of concrete applications include driveways, garage and basement floors, and poured concrete walls in basements and crawl spaces.

The cost of masonry work varies widely depending on the type of masonry along with common cost factors like size, complexity, location, and season. Most exterior masonry work done in freezing temperatures tends to cost more because of the preparation and protection involved to keep the masonry from freezing before the mortar cures properly. The average price ranges per project or square foot for different types of masonry include:

  • Brick wall (fence, garden wall, etc.): $10–$45 per square foot

  • Natural stone wall: $40–$110 per square foot

  • Manufactured stone veneer: $20–$40 per square foot

  • Brick home exterior: $10–$30 per square foot

  • Brick siding: $3–$10 per square foot

  • Stone siding: $35–$50 per square foot

  • Brick step replacement: $20–$30 per square foot

  • Brick wall repair: $20–$40 per square foot

  • Chimney repairs: $160–$750 per project

  • Tuckpointing: $5–$25 per square foot

A mason lays brick or stone together, sometimes with mortar in between the bricks and stones, and sometimes without mortar, also called a dry-stack or surface bonding. Examples of work masons do include:

  • Brick, stone, or cement block houses and buildings

  • Freestanding stone or brick walls

  • Chimneys with wood-burning fireplaces

  • Cement block basement or crawl space walls

Masonry work tends to be more expensive because the materials can be costly, such as natural stone and brick. Masonry is also very labor intensive, typically making up 50% or more of the final project cost. In addition, quality masonry work requires years of training and experience, as with any skilled trade.

Two types of masonry are veneer masonry and solid masonry. Veneer masonry is thin brick or stone material attached to the face of a building. With veneer masonry, the walls support the weight of the masonry products rather than the masonry being built on a concrete footing. Solid masonry is a wall or other brick or stone structure built on a concrete footing, and the masonry supports itself.
