I couldn't be happier with Gordon and his team. They were able to solve a long standing leaking problem I had. Gordon was very responsive and kept in contact with me while we waited for decent enough weather so that we could get this scheduled. His crew was very nice, very respectful and cleaned up completely after they were done. They showed up at the time promised and went right to work and worked thru without any breaks until the job was done. I've already gotten an estimate for another job I want them to do and would provide referrals without hesitation. Thank you! 7/15/15 Update: Had Gordon's team come out and do some additional work that I scheduled with them. Again, couldn't be happier with what they did for my house! Job well done!

It was a great experience working with Gordon and his team. He was extremely knowledgeable about construction/renovation. In addition, he often suggested opportunities where we could save costs that would be invisible to the consumer. Despite a few delays due to village requirements, we were very happy with the quality of work and the timeliness of the job completion. Gordon always kept us updated on progress/roadblocks. Our project was somewhat unique in that the property owner was also responsible for the management/costs of a portion of the project (ADA bathroom). Gordon and his team expertly managed the 3 key stakeholders (Digital Adventures, building ownership, Village of Wilmette)
Description of Work: We were opening our 1st location for a new 'coding for kids', Digital Adventures, business in Wilmette. We identified a former dental office that we would convert into a modern, high-tech fun space that would teach kids how to code in a fun, interactive, and social environment. We contracted with this company to lead the complete renovation and modernization of the space including village permitting. Since we are a startup, we also needed to stick to a very aggressive budget.

The workers are doing a good job. They did what they said they would. It wasn't like I thought it would be. They did everything except the floor. The price didn't include the paint. We have to pay extra for painting. They are very expensive.

Thank you for contacting us. As for the cost on this, we did all of the work as you mentioned for a already discounted rate from an Angie's deal. We did at no charge haul out items form the basement that you wanted to throw out. We also installed baseboard in an entire room that was not on the list. The flooring was never included as you were going to replace the water damaged carpet. Once we were finished you mentioned how pleased you were with the work and asked us if we would paint the basement. Thanks again and please keep us in mind for any future projects. Sincerely, GRGC
Perfect! It was a little job, but i just didn't have the tools to do it. Communication was perfect. 2 guys showed up and were very professional. Got to the task and had it completed in a high quality way. Thanks much

Its 10 degrees outside with a foot of snow on the ground. We just thought it might be better to work when you can see the issues, correct them properly and be able to do all of the work at once. Again, if you still want the work done we can keep this on the schedule for the beginning of spring.

Happy with the professionalism even though we were not able to use.
Description of Work: My husband and I recently bought a home in which several of the seals were broken on the windows. We were told by a glass company that we could simply replace the glass with the help of a contractor installing/ replacing the glass. When GR came to our home, of course this wasn't an option, which was fine - He was very informative of the best process to follow, very professional, and even had a professional pamphlet to give so we could contact him for future jobs.

After they started the work we were informed that the job would be more expensive than what we paid for the big deal. We couldn't really do anything about it since the job was already started. The deck looks nice but I'm not sure it was worth what we paid. Time will tell. If it lasts a few seasons then we will be satisfied. But it was definitely a sticker shock for us.
We had some contractors (referred by friends) come out and give us quotes for a bathroom remodel. The contractors that came out shared their opinions and gave us quotes, they were in the $10,000 -$12,000 range. Then we saw the Angie?s Big Deal for $10,000. This was a bathroom remodel for $4750 and thought, ?What a deal! That?s exactly what we are going to do.? After a quick search of GR General Contracting, we figured that we couldn?t lose going with an Angie's ?A Rated? contractor. WE WERE WRONG. If you are considering using GR Contractors we highly recommend you read this complaint to see how this guy operates. After purchasing ?the deal?, Gordon Rudd came out to the house on May 29th 2014. We showed him the bathroom and told him what we were (broadly) thinking. Everything was ?no problem?. I don?t think that he even stepped foot into the bathroom or took a measurement while he was here during that visit. He told us that we should pick out and buy the tile, vanity, bathtub, toilet, etc and we would get paid back from the $1000 materials credit. August 11th 2014 was the agreed upon start date. As the date for the start of the project neared we were still trying to figure out which tile to buy and what we could/couldn?t do, so we asked Gordon to come back out so we could go over a few things. He reluctantly came out on July 29th and we discussed taking out the medicine cabinet and filling the hole in the wall. He said, ?no problem.? We also discussed a half subway tile wall all around the bathroom and subway tile in the shower. He also said that that request was ?no problem?, just another extra cost of $500.00. We were feeling good...all seemed to be ok except he never wrote anything down??? Since the project was coming up he asked if the tile had been ordered yet. I told him no and asked how much to order. He said he would email me in a couple of days. He told me to order 75 sq ft for the shower, 75 for the walls and 75 for the floor. I ordered the tile. Later the next day, I remembered that we never ordered the bull-nose tile. I measured what I thought we would need for the shower and wall and then ordered that. The start date for the project came and Gordon sent some guys to do the demolition of the old bathroom. All the fixtures and tiles had come, except for the bull nose tile. I emailed Gordon to let him know that we were still waiting for the bull nose tile. He said that we would put the project on hold till all the tile was in. When the tile came in, Gordon sent a plumber to install the tub and shower faucet. He said that the plumber would be there between 2 o?clock and 5 o?clock. My wife had to leave, so I came home from work at noon and waited. By 6 o?clock there was still no plumber. I emailed Gordon to let him know. He seemed surprised that they were not there yet. My wife and kids came home, we had dinner, than had to go to a school function at 7 o?clock. The next day I got an email from Gordon saying that the plumbers were there, and left a card in the screen door. I looked and sure enough, it was there. We re-scheduled the plumber. When he showed up, he said that he had showed up at about 6 o?clock (ummm, 1 hr past the time we had agreed on) but we probably couldn?t hear him knocking because of our dog barking! We were eating dinner at that time and the dog did not bark while we were eating. When the dog barks, that?s how we know someone is at the door! Nice try buddy! After the tub went in, Gordon sent a guy to work on the tile. Everything seemed to be going OK until I notice that the floor tile had been cut to go around the oak door trim instead of under it. This would seem to mean that he was going to mortar the oak to the floor and tile. This didn?t seem right to me. I also noticed that in the shower, the tile did not go all the way up to the ceiling, leaving over an inch gap. I emailed Gordon my concerns and he said that the guy (forgot his name) would fix it all. He did replace the tile that he had cut around the trim and replaced it and cut a bit of trim off so the tile would fit under it. I tend to think that all the trim should have been removed before tiling then put back on when the tiling was finished, but what do I know? The guy also tried to convince my wife that he could put a piece of quarter round around the shower ceiling instead of tiling all the way to the top. I told him that was ridiculous and to tile all the way to the top. He did, but he did not follow the pattern of the rest of the tile, and just put it on the same way as the last row. We also asked him when he would start the half wall? He said that he knew nothing about it! (like I said, during our conversations, nothing was being written down) He called Gordon and Gordon said, ?Oh, that's right, they wanted a half wall?. We decided not to bother with the half wall after being talked out of it by the tile guy. The guy grouted, fixed the hole from the old medicine cabinet, installed the toilet, vanity, sink and light fixture, and then started painting (yes, started painting after installing all that stuff, not before). Said he was done, packed up his tools and left. When we inspected the work, there were over a dozen chipped tiles in the shower, the wall where he patched the vanity was bowed out, the light fixture was chipped (also missing a decorative screw ? probably down my sink) and loose with paint all over it, the floor by the tub flexed and pulled the grout away from the tub and wall, there was no transition strip for the threshold - so it just went from tile to grout to hardwood floor, we would still see the primer under the paint, paint lines were uneven, there were paint speckles all over the sink, toilet, and floor tile, and he over painted onto the oak trim around the door and window. Also, the exhaust fan did not suck any air (not their fault), and the electrical outlet did not work. We called Gordon and said that we wanted him to come out and see this. The next morning he came over and I started showing him everything, starting with the chipped tile. He said that no one would see it once the shower curtain was up (seriously!) and he doesn?t know how I even noticed it. I said I wanted it fixed and he said it was not their fault, ?must have been a manufacturing defect? (even though I could not find another defect in the 3 open boxes of tile). I said that if that is the case, his guy should have seen the chips and not have installed them. Gordon said that Kohler makes a paint type pen that would cover up the chips and I would not notice that they were even there. I said that we could try that, but if it didn?t work I wanted them replaced. He made some excuses for the rest of the stuff and never failed to remind us, ?I am losing money on this job.? He then said he would send out the same guy to fix it??? We told him, NO! We wanted someone else, not the same guy who messed it all up. Gordon said, ? OK, I will send out my best guy.? We were later told that the guy who was working on our bathroom for weeks was fired? Not sure we believe this one considering he was in a great mood when he came to drop off the tools to our house. The new guy came out and tried fixing the tile with the paint pen, but that only made it look like someone put White Out on the tile, so they cut out the bad tiles and replaced them, fixed the floor, smoothed out the wall (kind of), repainted (parts, still see primer in spots), installed the towel bars, hooks, and toilet paper holder (badly ? messed up the paint putting them on and they are crooked and feel like they are about to fall off), put on a transition strip, installed the new exhaust fan, then realized the switch for that didn?t work. They had to send out an electrician to fix the outlet and the switch for the exhaust fan. After my wife argued with Gordon about the chipped light fixture and the scratched vanity top, Gordon sent us a check for $250.00. Now we are a few months out from this nightmare and the grout in the corners of the shower is cracking and so is the grout between the floor tile and the tub. We would recommend that you do not use Gordon Rudd for anything! He was not easy to work with, had an excuse for everything, his guys did not really seem to know what they were doing, and he would constantly call the workers and tell them to hurry up. During the project he only came out twice and one of those times was when I called him to come out and look at what they were calling finished. He still has never seen the final result. We also found that Gordan's guys were dumping the left over grout and paint directly across the street in the woods. Now myself and my neighbors get to look at this mess daily. The bathroom still does not look like we had a professional remodel it. I could have done better myself. Next time I will. Do yourself a favor and stay away from the Angie?s Big Deals also. You do end up getting less than you paid for.

This is the second time we have used GR Contracting and were very happy with their work. We received quotes from several providers and ultimately went with GR again due to price and quality of work on the previous job. The wood repair all looks great and the new paint job came out better than expected. The guys that were onsite were professional and kept us informed of their progress throughout the job. We feel like we received excellent quality work for a great price.

He is not doing the work that I purchased. It is inflicting emotional trauma on us and he’s taken away the use of our deck. This has been going on for weeks. He won’t show up for scheduled appointments and then some guy inevitably shows up with no warning. I just spoke with him this morning and he accused me of misrepresenting the amount of work that needed to be done, which is untrue. This work needs to be completed.

I don't know where to start with this project. We bent over backwards trying to accommodate you and your schedule. First we came out and spent all day prepping the deck. The next day we came out to stain the deck and you said there were too many leaves blowing around to please stop. Then we tried to come back and you said no one could walk on your grass. We then came back to pressure wash due to the time in between and asked if you could have the furniture removed. Not only was that not done, but there were a ton of toys there on top of it. We moved them and then rain came in. We waited for nice weather and you were not happy that there was only one person there. With all of this said we finished the job, did extensive board replacement and still offered a discount because we were behind 2 people this week. I'm not really sure what else we could have done. We do appreciate your business either way. Sincerely, GRGC

Thank you for working with us on that deal. The deal was for 1000 sqft, you had more than that we completed at no extra charge. You then said can you do the front porch that was about another 700 sqft. We looked at that part of the deck and found live wires coming out from the front of the house. I'm not going to have my guys spay water on live wires. They explained that to you and you said you have it fixed and get back to us. We never heard back. So we did do over and above the job we were hired to do at a discounted rate and did not complete a dangerous section of the home.

When we can't get in touch with a customer such as yourself we have to go on to the next one until we can connect. As an act of good faith, please let me know if you still want this work completed and we will schedule it for this week. Again please have the appropriate material there for us. GR Contracting was very responsive to my inquiries. They arranged directly with my tenant to go out to the house and view the deck for the purpose of an estimate. Once I accepted their estimate, they again worked with the tenant to complete the work. Despite my tenant being difficult to deal with, GR Contracting maintained professionalism and completed the work in a timely manner. I then paid the remaining amount. The deck which previously looked as though it was falling apart, now looks like new. GR Contracting assessed the damage, replaced what boards needed to be replaced, sanded what needed to be sanded, and then stained the deck in a color that was pleasing. I am very satisfied. I deducted one point because I felt the cost was a bit on the high side. That being said, I believe the quality work and the fact GR Contracting had to work in a "hostile environment" created by an unreasonable tenant makes up for most of the increased cost. I would definitely use GR Contracting again, for other jobs that are needed to my rentals.

Overall it went fine. Great communication with the owner. The weather didn't cooperate so the project took aprox. 3 weeks. They accidently left the hose on over night, but took $50 off the total bill.

- Given quote by contractor for bathroom and gutter project - Contractor visited the house, and also emailed me the quotes - scheduled appointment for both jobs on July 14 - I purchased the new tub, surround, fixtures and drywall - all are in my garage. - I had the city shut off the water to my home on the 14th before contractor arrived - On July 14 I received aphone call in the morning that they would notbe able to do the bathroom, and they asked to reschedule. - I rescheduled for my next day off, the following Monday. - July 14, a worker came out and removed the gutters, but did not have a long enough ladder to remove the last few feet. He will return later this week. - Nails were not replaced and now the fascia trim is not secure at the top, there are just a bunch of nail holes. Emailed contractor to have this fixed when worker returns to remove the last few feet of gutter. - Called to put the deposit down on the shower/tub project and pay for the gutter removal - Received a call that contractor would be out to the do the bathroom remodel in the afternoon but may not finish it all. - Received an email that I would still be able to use the shower even if all the drywall was not finished, and they would come out another day to finish the drywall - Responded to contractor that that was not acceptable and the bathroom needs to be done in one day. Suggested I could find another contractor if they cannot finish the project in one day. - Contractor offered to refund my deposit and that I should find another contractor because they don't have time to do my bathroom project. - Was told a check would be dropped off when the worker comes to finish removing the gutter; still no response on the nail holes or how much the refund will be. (Deposit was for both projects) After thinking about this, I'm extremely disappointed. I have bathroom "parts" in my garage, and no new bathroom. This has been a huge inconvenience for us and I'm now on the hunt for a legit contractor to get this project done before August. I honestly don't understand why someone would schedule an appointment and take a deposit if they knew they were unable to complete the job as requested. Still hoping to have the nails replaced in the fascia and last part of the gutter removed, and waiting for an invoice on the work that was done and the amount they will be returning. I just don't get it.
Description of Work: They came to the house and gave me a quote on removing my gutters and nailing up the fascia trim; also a quote on removing my current tub/surround and fixtures and replacing them. Work that was done: Gutters were removed. The worker did not have a tall enough ladder and will be back to remove the last few feet of gutters. Worker did not replace all nails that were removed; requested that the nails are replaced when he returns to remove the last part of the gutter.

Response from GR General Contracting
I really don't get it either, being that this review was written while we are trying to work with you. Two major mistruths about this job. One you never told us the city would shut off the water. Why would they do that when we could get to the shut off and do it our self. Two you never said you wanted this done in one day. I hope you find a contractor that can do a full bathroom remodel and drywall patch and repair in one day. I personally don't think they are out there if you want a quality job done. I'm sorry this did not work, but like I said above we were not complete with the exterior not because of a ladder but because my employee was stung by hornets several times. I care about our guys and told him to leave immediately take care of the stings. I will issue a refund and again an apology, however think a lot was left out and needed to be communicated before agreeing to the remodel. We can do a lot to accommodate customers but those need to be coupled with reasonable expectations.
