The job started on time. There were some minor delays because not enough roofing material was initially purchased and they had to return to address an endcap that was not completely nailed down.
Description of Work: Hired GR General Contractors put on a new roof.
They were able to do exactly what we wanted and even went a little beyond by adding some of their own touches that worked out well. They were professional, and they did a quality job. We will use them again for future projects.

I left a message, and within 1 hour Gordon called me back. I explained I wanted to know exactly what was to be done, and the condition of our deck. We needed exactly what the BIG DEAL was for, but when I told him that we needed sanding, he said they only do spot sanding where needed. He said I should contact a deck restoration company. The name of their BIG DEAL is "$699 for Deck Restoration! " I dont understand what part of saying they return the next day to sand and prep, and that I should call a deck restoration company? Isnt that what the BIG DEAL states? I highly urge people to contact the contractor before you spend money to make sure you know what you are getting. In this case the ad was completely misleading
Description of Work: I contacted them concerning their BIG DEAL of Pressure washing entire deck surfaceAllowing surface to dry thoroughly and return the next day to sand and prep deck.Applying a solid stain in your choice of colorReturning the third day to apply a second coat of solid stain for $699.00 I wanted to make sure what I was getting

I agree with your statement of contacting the contractor if you don't understand the Big Deal wich you clearly don't. It states solid stain only, you want semi transparent. The sanding is spot sanding for high spots and to help blend the color making it more uniform. You want you entire deck sanded down which would take a week. As for us getting C for getting back to you, I called within an hour. I don't think its fair to give a company a bad report who is offering a great deal to refresh your deck. As for the restoration company, I mentioned I could help find you a company that does what your looking for and applies chemicals and the semi stain. You turned that around and made it sound like I was passing the buck. We do a lot of these per year and never have anyone not understand the process, I'm sorry to hear you are the first, even after we explained it in professional and helpful way.

I'm sorry about the misunderstanding. I received an email stating that you had cancelled the purchase 4 months ago. Should you still be interested in the big deal I would be willing to offer it to you at half the price of the big deal. We always contact our customers and return calls. Spring and summer are very busy times of the year but that is not an excuse to not scheudel the work needed. Please let me know if you would like to have the work performed at the discounted rate. (I contacted GR Contracting to do some repair work to the exterior of my home and to stain it. It had been a few years and some of the cedar wood was in tough condition. Gordon came out on time, on the date he said he would. He gave me a quote on doing theminor electrical work, general woodworking , and it staining and painting the entire exterior of the house. I got 5 different bids. His bid was fair, and I felt comfortable with the questions he asked and his input on the job. He was awarded the job. Work came in on budget, and looked great. Best part was that he was very communicative of where they were in the process and what was going on next. He responded to all of my emails and calls that I placed. He was working on multiple jobs and the work took a little bit longer than planned, but the end job was well worth it. Good team. Would recommend him or his team for your next job. I have had him give me quotes on doing two more jobs, (bath tub replacement and hardwood floor laying) and I am very comfortable in having Gordon and GR General Contracting back in my home and in doing more work. Good guy that is hands on and has a good network of professionals he works with.

In a three day exercise the existing drywall was removed, followed by the sprayfoaming, followed by the replacement of the garage ceiling drywall. Everything went as scheduled. The weather was still relatively cold/cool so GR opted to wait before finishing the drywall seam taping/finishing. We expect them back in April/May to do so. All work was done efficiently and the garage area left clean/tidy at the end of each day.
Description of Work: GR did sprayfoaming insulation of the bedroom floor area above our garage ceiling involving removal/replacement of the two car garage ceiling and application of a several inch layer of sprayfoam to those portions above that were exterior wall to the bedroom above.

Gordon was prompt and professional. He inspected my windows quickly and made an honest assessment of my windows and told me that the windows themselves were the cause of the heat loss, and the insulation would have little to no effect on the energy loss. He advised me on some different courses of action I could take that would be cost effective, and advised me to have Angies List refund me the $149 fee since there was nothing he could do for the window insulation to help. I greatly respected Gordon for being honest with me and I was happy to hear that his company is doing well. Always reassuring to hear that honest contractors are doing well in our economic climate. He informed me that there are many other contracting jobs he is capable of doing, and since I'll be moving in the not-too-distant future, I'm sure I will be giving a call to G.R. General Contracting in short time.

Angie's List had a Big Deal for winterizing windows and doors from this company. Although my house was built in 1999 -- it's not really old -- there are terrible drafts by several windows and I thought winterizing them might help. Gordon came out the day after I called for an appointment, and arrived right on time. He had to travel for an hour to get here, so I appreciated his effort to get here as promised. I pointed out where the drafts were the worst, but Gordon told me right away that the only thing he could really do to stop them would involve caulking the windows shut or covering them with plastic sheeting for the winter. Because I do try to make things look nice in the house, he could see that this was not a solution that would appeal to me. He explained that some problems were due more to large expanses of glass, such as in the bump-out around the breakfast area, than to actual leakage around the windows. He wondered if the insulation in some walls was adequate and told me how to address that issue. Because he knew I wouldn't be happy with the winterizing process that was included in the Angie's List deal, he offered to refund my money, $149. Gordon also advised me about problems we had upstairs that might also be related to insulation or venting. He clearly knows what he's doing in so many areas of construction and I was very grateful for his taking the time to tell me what he thought about various questions I had. Gordon spent about 45 minutes here, after driving 35 miles, for no compensation at all. He was totally wiling to look into the problems at my house and make suggestions, even after we decided not to use the Big Deal. You can't help but be impressed by someone as honorable as that! If I ever contemplate renovations of any kind -- or any other work on my house -- I will absolutely call him again.
Description of Work: I took advantage of G.R. Contracting's Angie's List Deal for winterizing 25 windows and doors for $149. Gordon came right on time the day after I called for an appointment, and had the courtesy, ethics and honesty to tell me that he couldn't really do anything about my particular situation without making changes to the appearance of the windows that I probably wouldn't be happy with. Even so, he spent a long time here looking into other problems. He offered to have Angie's List refund all my money, which they did.

Gordon Rudd is the owner of the business. I bought the deal from Angie’s List for three or four hours. I think it was $150. I don’t think I would recommend him to others. He didn’t come prepared for the job. He called me two days after I bought the deal to set the appointment up. I told him what I needed done and he agreed to it. Unless we are living in a ranch house, almost every house here in Illinois is a two story house. If we are doing outside siding repair I would expect that as a general contractor one would have a ladder which would go all the way up to the siding that is all the way up near the roof. I had about three planks which are on the second story side of my house that needed to be nailed in. He told me that he didn’t have a ladder tall enough that would take him up there and that he couldn’t do that. He was the only guy who had come that day, so the work was risky going that high up to nail the siding but that was part of the job that I showed him that I wanted done. I did ask him to give me a paint quote on the exterior job. He said he had a couple of guys who would come out and do it. He emailed me and told me that they were going to come out on a certain day so that they could look at the exterior, take some pictures and give me a quote on it. I asked him since he had the guys coming back if he would send them with the ladder so they could get to the three planks of siding that was upstairs that he couldn’t get to. It was part of the original job. He said that they couldn’t do it. They could easily come in with a ladder and nail those in. It is not rocket science. They could have done it. He did the rest of the work but I still have three planks on one side of my house that is still incomplete. He didn’t really finish his job. The guys didn’t turn up right away as it was around the thanksgiving weekend, so he emailed me and told me that his guys would show up after the thanksgiving weekend to come and take a look and give me a quote on it. It took at least a week to get a quote on the paint job. I wasn’t in a rush on the paint job because it is winter, so I am not looking to get the house painted on the outside. I would only do it in the spring to begin with. We moved into our house about a year and a half ago. I had gotten a quote at that time on the paint job on the exterior. He gave me a quote on the paint job and it was more than twice of what I had got originally. He is expensive. He is not cheap. He showed up on time. He was polite and courteous. I think what upset me more was that he called and scheduled the appointment but didn’t come prepared with the necessary tool. I would not use him again in the future.
Description of Work: I used GR General Contracting for some exterior siding work. I have cedar siding on the outside. I had him fill up some holes, caulk the windows and do some repair work. I also got a quote for exterior painting.

Response from GR General Contracting
First of all thank you for purchasing the Big Deal on Angies List and giving us the opportunity to work on your home. In response to your notes I'd like to add our feedback. First as the Big Deal states you are responsible for contacting the service provider. Second the 3 boards you speak of were over 40 feet in the air and I don't carry a lift with me. Third I not only fixed all the areas of the home but fixed the hole in the ground that was causing water to leak under your house. That would be a landscapers category however did it to help you and your family. As for paint quote show me your original quote with the date you speak of and price and I'll do my best to adjust mine. Without seeing like for like work I can't speak for the other comapny only saying we are never the cheapest or most expensive, We are a fair company who cares about their customers and performes work with the highest level of integrity. Just a side note, I also would never had said my painter would fix the boards when they came out to do the quote. I had mentioned what an easy fix it would be for whoever was up ther at the time of painting fo complete. Thanks again for the opportuntiy to work with you and your family and please let me know if you have any questions. Sincerely, Gordon Rudd GR General Contracting

We purchased 2 hours of time through 'Today's Big Deal'. We have a garage at a new house that had plywood paneling partially installed, and we hired GR General Contracting to finish the work. Gordon arrived right on time, and finished the job quickly and professionally. The final sections of panels needed to have their grooves 'lined up' with the existing panels, and Gordon did that perfectly. He asked questions about how we wanted certain things - like cut outs for a gas valve - handled. Excellent work, and Gordon spent more than the allotted time to make sure everything was done right.
Description of Work: Finished installing plywood paneling in our 3-car garage.
Gordon and his crew were courteous, punctual and they worked around our schedules. I am pleased with the quality of the work and the overall cost was very reasonable. They were very responsive to our requests. I would gladly recommend Gordon's services again. I had no previous experience with Gordon's crew and located them on Angie's list, which I was a bit skeptical of at first, but I am glad I did.
Description of Work: Gordon performed several tasks around my house. He installed 3 windows, plus trim work, tore down and replaced 2 ceilings, installed crown molding on both and prepped the surfaces to paint-ready (we hadn't picked colors yet and wanted to paint it ourselves), installed two new roof vents and also repaired some gutters and siding that had been damaged by an ice dam last winter. Gordon also finished up some tasks that we had previously started and never finished.
We couldn?t be happier with the room or working with GR General Contracting. We had several situations where we needed to be ?creative? and we were thrilled with the outcome in every case. For example, because we are a ranch with water heat, the water pipes for our boiler all hug the ceiling and we had to be creative with the ceiling installation to get as much height in the room as we could, yet still accommodate clearance for door openings, etc. We also have a non-standard sized door opening from the new area to the older, already finished area of the basement, and wanted French doors. Because the size wasn?t standard, GR General Contracting was able to cut down standard doors to create the look we wanted. I also wanted a closet to span one wall of the office to store my craft supplies (and hide a plumbing stack) and the outcome was perfect. Projects never go exactly as planned, and the most important part of working with GR General Contracting was the ability to be flexible and creatively work out a solution that met our needs and desires for the project. We are thrilled to have this expanded living space to spread out and get tremendous use of the space every day.
Description of Work: We had the unfinished half of our basement finished into two rooms – a family room/rec room and office. This included tearing down old paneling, building out the rooms, drywall, new electrical, drop ceiling, closets, floor, installed electric baseboard heat, etc.

Went great. He was on time, and got straight to work. He hand sanded and hand painted the entire deck that is quite large maybe 1000 square feet or more. He saw it through to completion and the deck looks great now. He also took down a dead tree in the backyard with a helper. The tree was quite difficult to work with and it took them most of the day, but in the end there was no extra charge, and the wood was neatly stacked. Will definitely keep using them.
Description of Work: Refinish and stain outdoor deck. Cut down dead tree in backyard.
This company is extremely professional and reliant. They arrived in a timely manner, worked diligently and were very trustworthy.
Description of Work: Repaired hole in wall from outside to inside of house including support for overhead garage door caused by an accident involving an automobile. Repairs included rebuilding of damaged walls and studs, replacing and painting of cedar siding, reinstallation of overhead garage door, installation of steel service door and installation of octagon window. I was very impressed with their work and have just called to have them do another job at my home. Excellent company. Reliable, professional, trustworthy and friendly. Highly recommend.
The whole experience was a delight. We called one week, and Gordon was out right away to see what needed to be done. Nothing seemed too big or small, and he had a common sense solution for everything. His crew started within a very short time (a week, I think), and everyone worked with a sense of urgency. They were on time, and worked full days. My husband and I are very happy.
Description of Work: I accepted a job in another state, and we needed to put our house on the market in a hurry. I called Gordon one week, and he and his folks were out the next to do a number of maintenance jobs on our house that needed doing. He fixed: - our living rooms ceiling where water had leaked from the upstairs bath, - the basement ceiling where a pipe had burst, the spindles on the railing on the stairs, - the exhaust fan in the bathroom, - the door lock that wouldn't let us open the door, - the downspout had become disconnected. His painter patched and primed and painted nearly all of our interior.

Working with GR General Contracting and Old World Stone I first went to their warehouse to choose and tag two slabs. Great experience and I found beautiful slabs. They came out and VERY carefully measured my counters (with lasers) and went over my choices for corners and edges. Approximately one week later they called to say the counters were ready to be installed. Came out 3 days later, took out all existing and installed all new....all done in one day. Everything was hauled away and cleaned up to perfection. The stone work is just beautiful and after they cleaned up and left you would never have known any work had even been done! Follow up: I decided I wanted to redo a tabletop and they cut me a piece from the same slab so that I could create a new tabletop. It was done in 3 days, I picked it up (they even met me there on Sat morning even though they were closed so I could get it) and I now have a gorgeous piece of furniture that compliments my countertops, too.
Description of Work: Needed all kitchen countertops removed and replaced with Granite countertops. Plumbing work also needed to be done to replace sink, garbage disposal and faucet.
