Overall, I was very pleased with their work and would use them again. Nice people to work with and the gentlemen who did the work did a wonderful job. The project (from my initial interest to ultimate work being done) dragged out a bit (part me, part them) but I wasn't pushing them since I didn't really have a needed end date. I suspect their price may have been a bit higher than other places. In the end, I was happy with the outcomes and figure you get what pay for.

I called Poul's and set up an appointment. Rick there landscaping designer, was there exactly at the designated time. He is a very cordial and knowledgeable person. I asked him for his expertise. He explained what would be a good layout. Rick said he would send me a layout design and cost via email. I approved and was sent a contract and half the cost would be paid before work started which I did. The work date and time were set. The crew was there promptly at 7:30AM. Rick was arrived a few minutes later. He said the work would be done by 2:00PM. The crew had completed the work and excellent cleanup by Noon. Rick arrived an hour later. We had a complete walk around. The job exceeded my expectations-outstanding. All shrubs and flowers are guaranteed for a year. Rick explained the watering procedure I should use. After 3 weeks, everything is growing fantastically. Everybody at Poul's did a great job. I am a happy customer! Also, I received a 10% discount because I mentioned they were on Angie's List and received many high ratings.

Rick, the designer, was great to work with. He designed the plan, went over it with me in detail, provided pictures of all proposed landscape material, made revisions at my request. Project ended up being slightly less than he quoted. Dan, the owner, did a final inspection and walk through with me to ensure I knew how to properly care for all my new plants & trees. He came back an additional time to check on a few plants that had leaf scorch. He will inspect again next spring.

Our project began with some major structural work that was completed last fall. Rock and timber retaining walls and buried gutter drains were installed last fall, and I left an "A" rating previously for that segment of the work. Andrew was great at scoping the work and helping me get permits for it from our village. Andrew came through again for us early this summer. He designed a fabulous blue stone entrance walkway as well as new lighting for the front yard. The stone walkway was a somewhat complicated design, but Poul's stone workers were extremely skillful, and it came out beautifully. Andrew also designed a lighting scheme for our very dark front yard (no street lights where we live,) that is MUCH easier to maintain than our old one, and that nicely compliments our contemporary house and zen garden. The lighting couldn't be more perfect. Finally, Andrew was exceedingly patient in working with me on the shape of our new driveway and the plant selections for the zen garden. I am very picky about plant material, and the design evolved over several conversations. He even allowed me to pick out the specimen trees that were important to the design. I am sure I was frustrating to work with, but Andrew was never annoyed. The whole thing came out better than we imagined. My entire family couldn't be more pleased!

Andrew is fabulous to work with. He is a great communicator and worked with me every step of the way to complete the design phase. He also attended the architectural review committee meeting required by our village for the permit. I believe he personally installed the new lighting. The Poul workmen that ripped out the old landscaping and put in place the new drainage and retaining wall were wonderful. They were respectful and cleaned up after themselves every day. I highly recommend Poul's for any landscaping work.
Description of Work: Poul's redesigned the drainage for the front of our house, which was a nontrivial job because it the gutters needed to have a drainage line run under our driveway. They also redesigned and replaced the retaining wall that holds up our driveway and parking area. They also designed and installed new lighting for the front of our house.

Our contact at Poul's, Jon Lee, and the crew that did the planting, was fantastic. Jon came out to give us an estimate, delivered it in a timely manner, followed up with us and arranged for all the work to be done exactly as promised. The day the bushes were planted, his crew showed up on time, did a great job with the planting, dealt with our disgruntled neighbor and took every bit of yard waste with them. They then followed up with us afterwards to ensure everything was satisfactory. I highly recommend them and would use Poul's again in the future.

I also continue to work with the maintenance division with routine maintenance and other things like tree treatment and adjustments to landscaping. Their pricing is very fair and they are flexible on plans.

This is the third time I've worked with Poul's. I found them on Angie's list in 2013. The first year, I worked directly with Dan Poul. That was an excellent experience. The project was a thorough spring clean up after a couple years of neglect; mulching; removing raised beds and replacing with sod, etc. The quality of the work was excellent. From a cost perspective, they were a little higher - but I was ok with that, given the level of confidence I had in the work - and I just had a good feeling about Dan. Super nice, thorough, gave his honest opinion about what I might do to the yard, and even suggested a phased approach, with a little done every year to achieve the "goal". Last year (2014), I worked with Jon Lee, and noticed a definite decline in responsiveness. I had to follow up a couple times to get a quote. The quality of the work was still good, though there were a couple small things that didn't get done (and they never came back to finish, despite Jon saying they would). This year, I decided to give Poul's another chance. When I called, they told me that I'm now outside their business area, but because I'm a repeat customer, they would give me a quote. Jon was again assigned. He came out over a week and a half ago, we discussed what needed to be done this year, and he left promising to e-mail me a quote for the work. I'm still waiting. I'm thinking it might be time for me to reevaluate this relationship, which is a bummer - because I was really happy with the first experience. For the first time since starting my business relationship with Poul's, I'm actually seeking other quotes. I'd say, if you're within their service area and can work directly with Dan, that would be best.

Why would you go anywhere else besides Poul's? You wouldn't. They are a company small enough to know you by name when you're working on a project and big enough to handle most any job. From the inside office to the guys in the field their professionalism is the best I've seen. Dan came out and walked the property worth me, took measurements and prepared a proposal in writing for me. They handled calling for utilities, and everything in between. They even helped me take some large tree limbs down that were on the brink of falling (no extra charge). Don't go anywhere else, but Poul's. You won't be disappointed

The swale has kept both snow melt and rain deluges from entering our basement ever since. Our neighbors roof drain water also flows down the swale where it once heavily contributed to our basement flooding through our window wells. When we were on a remote vacation, O'hare airport near us had a summer deluge that closed their runways and with the Poul Landscaping swale we returned to a dry basement.
Description of Work: Create a swale 50' x 9' with a 1% pitch to front lawn and with a 2% pitch away from the house. Install shade seed and cover with 45 sq ft erosion control straw netting. Swale was guaranteed for one year.

Poul's is punctual, professional, does beautiful work, and it is nice to work with such great people. That said, they are expensive. Come springtime this year, I will have to assess whether it is worth the cost to keep working with them. No complaints whatsoever about their service, however -- I have worked with many landscapers over the years and they are top notch.

This is the second project that we have had Poul's do for us. We have worked with Rick for both of these projects. He is very knowledgeable and takes the time to discuss options so that the plan that is presented is what you want. My house is on a corner lot and we decided that we wanted to have more privacy during the winter. Although this wasn't in the original plan we had worked on a year prior, he was able to fit the items we needed into it. The project was quickly scheduled and the team finished all the work in one day. Rick was on site at the beginning of the day to go over where everything was going to go, and to make sure we were still happy with the placement. of all the landscaping. Although Poul's is not going to be the cheapest estimate you receive, the extra cost is worth it for the quality of the plants that you get, the warranty that goes with those plants, and the quality service you get from them during and after the project.

They did a great job. Their crew was timely, professional, and did high quality work. Their project manager, Dan, came by often to ensure the crew was making progress and to answer any questions we had. We are very happy with the results. There was rotting wood behind the stoop and they arranged for a good carpenter to come and repair to ensure the job was completed properly.
Description of Work: Expanded paver patio, lowering by an inch to allow for clearance of screen door. Rebuilt stoop, regraded grass surrounding patio to eliminate step down. Fixed dip in pavers in front of garage, cleaned and resanded all joints in front walkway and driveway. We also had them lay sod in an area in the backyard.

Everything worked out great. Rick was our primary contact and he showed a great deal of care in each interaction (from the design/consultation stage to the execution). We worked within a budget and we were pleased with the result. The team worked efficiently and were courteous in our interactions that day. The bottom line is that we are planning the "Phase 2" part of the project for 2015 and we are definitely planning to use Poul's. Highly recommended!
Description of Work: We wanted to replace the landscaping of a home we recently purchased. Poul's removed the existing dirt/rocks and replaced everything with new shrubs, trees and mulch per their design. In addition, new sod was planted in a few different spots in the yard.

We had a fabulous experience working with Poul's. Andrew was our main contact / Landscape designer. We had a vague idea of what we wanted done, and new we had to replace our aging retaining wall and driveway. We also wanted to enhance our curb appeal, but really didn?t know how to go about it. Andrew spent a great deal of time understanding what we liked or didn't like, and started coming up with ideas during our initial consultation. Once we agreed to move forward, he drew up plans and a proposal, that honestly blew our minds. It was not cheap, but it was fabulous. We requested zero revisions to his plan. We are very demanding customers so I cannot remember in the past when somebody nailed it on the first try. The work itself took approximately two weeks once Poul's could get us in the schedule and our building permit was approved. The crew was absolutely meticulous, cleaning up each day and trying to impact us as little as possible during the extensive construction. They showed up every day on time and worked hard every minute they were here. Andrew visited the site daily to check progress. When small things came up, Andrew got them resolved before I could have to worry about it. When the project was complete, one of the owners of the company came out to do a complete walkthrough and provide care instructions for our new plants. The work completely transformed our house. All of our neighbors, and even the UPS delivery man commented on how nice it came out, and what a difference it made. Andrew is a very talented individual who is easy to work with, and Poul's is a great landscaping / hardscape company. We would absolutely recommend them, and plan to use them for additional work in the future.
Description of Work: We hired Poul's to redesign the landscaping / hardscaping in the front and side of our home. For this they: Created a whole new design based on our parameters Removed all the existing landscaping and walk Created a new unilock pavers path and front step Built a new retaining wall and stairs using custom cut outcropping stone Installed a flagstone path to the side of our house Installed a new trench drain in our driveway Subcontracted to remove and replace our existing asphalt drive Planted Trees, Shrubs, and Perennials and Ground Cover Installed landscape lighting

We are just about to finish stage 2 of a 3 stage project. Andrew Ptasienski has been our designer and I can't say enough good things about working with this guy. He is easy to get along with and he has fun doing what he does. Plus he's just talented. He can not only visualize the final product, but figures out a way to make you understand it too. Andrew communicates well via email and is not hard to reach. He isn't afraid to tell you what he really thinks, even if he disagrees, but he does it in a way that is collaborative and constructive. He's honest about what work you should have done prior to his team's arrival and where you might be able to save a few bucks. I can't recommend Andrew and the team at Poul's enough. Our next door neighbors thought he did such a nice job, they hired Andrew and Poul's to redo their front yard as well. One downside: I actually had to chase him down the street to pay him. How often does that happen?
