Description of Work: Our appointment setup was fine and the worker arrived on time. We showed him all the potential jobs we had in mind and asked him for his opinion for the allotted 6 hours of time. He proceeded to finish the first 3 fairly quickly and did a good job. On the last job which was to replace wooden framework of the garage door we had an issue. Overall we thought we communicated well with the worker, but there must have been a misunderstanding about supplies and time needed for job. I showed him the entire job that was needed, and he agreed to go get the supplies needed. I thought he had enough time left (about 2 hours), so he got the supplies and finished the (outside work). He came and told me wife he was done and he left. She did not have a chance to check it until an hour later and he had only completed half of the garage framing (the right half). He had left with at least 30 minutes of allotted time remaining so he must have not had enough supplies or time to finish the rest of the left side. But, he never informed me of that (I had to leave before he started the last job), nor did he mention it to my wife. Misunderstanding or miscommunication? We don't know but he was not clear about only having time to do the right side. Unfortunately a bad ending to an otherwise good experience for the rest of the work that was done earlier.

Description of Work: I called this company and even purchased a big deal. I eventually had to ask for a refund. The company and particularly the sales manager did not seem to have a good grasp of what the workers were capable of doing or what their schedule was. I placed several calls to the company. Even though I was told that I would be called back, I never was.

We cannot rebuild a house which was burnt to the ground with 3 Angie's List 6 hour LABOR ONLY "deals". The deals are designed for smaller repair type projects. You also forgot to mention how your Husband Physically threatened Myself on our initial meeting at the home after giving him a quote for: supplying, hanging, and taping the entire 2,500 sq. ft. of the house. The second meeting was by our former sales manager Ed Mcauley, a fellow Irishman, who was also physically threatened by your Husband upon their last meeting. I did record both of these events in detail in our daily logs in case this had escalated into something worse than a bad grade on Angie's List. Try not to vent your personal problems toward others. It will get you nowhere fast. -Kent Meyers, Owner

Very pleased with the experience. The work done as scheduled, communication was excellent and performed quality work. The new tile in the bathroom looks wonderful. The repairing the drywall in the garage was not an easy job as it was in an awkward spot and must have taken a lot of effort to reach and repair. It looks excellent!

Can I give Kent and KDM an A+++++++++ please? He is AWESOME!! I was a little apprehensive about the project because of a rocky start (not with Kent but with a mess up on Angie's list special that referred me to the wrong contractor who was apparently out of business). Once Angie's List referred me KDM to honor the purchase, it was smooth sailing. He responded immediately to me and we scheduled a work date for the next week. I can't begin to tell you how much I respect his abilities and professionalism. He went above and beyond and picked up the 458 sq. feet of lumber from the lumber yard for me (I was long on lumber and short on a way to get it to my house - a miscalculation on my part). He then spent the entire day at my house working on my doors and let me tell you - they look SPECTACULAR! Better than I had anticipated they would turn out actually. The barn door style doors are also amazing and he had them up in a snap. LOVE THEM! After I prepped and painted them I can't stop staring at my closets - is weird I know. I am sending him photos for his book because they look so darn cool! He kept me in the loop at all times but he didn't really need to as I could tell right off the bat he was awesome! I have some more projects in my head for my place and will be sure to call on him to help me. If you are in the western suburbs and need a contractor - call KDM you can't go wrong there!
Description of Work: I live in a condo - and one of my most hated parts of my place has always been my closet doors (don't get me started on the popcorn ceilings). They are 8 foot doors and all different (non-standard) sizes so they are too expensive to replace. I found a project on Pinterest to turn them all into shaker style doors using lumber strips (refacing the existing ones) and also adding to "barn door style" doors to my house (bedroom and bathroom). Both projects were from Pinterest project plans - I think he thought I was a bit wacky actually LOL!

Vey professional from start to finish!
Description of Work: He moved light fixtures, repaired a sliding door and much more. Did a great job, very professional. Did exactly what he said he'd do and did it well! We were very pleased. Would definitely have again!
Kent contacted me within days of my Big Deal purchase through Angie's List. He was able to schedule me within the week and arrived promptly at our agreed-upon day/time. Kent was very professional and pleasant to work with. He was able to complete all the to-do's on my list in the allotted time and the quality of his work was excellent. I would highly recommend Kent and would not hesitate to use him on future projects.
Description of Work: I purchased 6 hours of labor from KDM in January through an Angie's List Big Deal. I had a list of odd jobs for Kent (repair closet doors/trim, replace ceiling tiles in basement, replace 2 damaged pieces of cedar siding.

Kent arrived at my home promptly. I was excited that I could get a Saturday appointment given that I work during the week. I purchased the $199 for up to 6 man hours of general remodeling/contracting services. I ordered two sofa tables off the internet, which he assembled. He also installed the mounts in my bedroom for my drapery rods--per my instructions and hung a rather large picture (64 x 48) in the family room. When Kent left, I decided to place the actual rods onto the drapery mounts. I discovered I had miscalculated the measurements. I called Ken to inform him of my mistake and asked if he could circle back and reinstall the mount when he had a moment. I was quite surprised when Kent said he'd be right back. Not only did he reinstall the mount, but he plastered the hole that was created from the removal of the initial installation. I will definitely use KDM services again.

decks, remodeling

Our old deck was 26 years old and in bad shape -- pulling away from the house and sinking, due to crumbling supports. Had hoped to repair it, but after talking to numerous contractors, realized we'd have to tear it out and completely rebuild. Had several estimates, most over 10K, and most saying they could not recreate the design and style of our existing deck. Kent Meyers of KDM came through with a reasonable estimate and various ideas on how we could retain our design, yet fulfill the extremely rigorous new building codes. He was professional, knowledgeable, extremely easy to work with -- and had a sense of humor (which was important, considering some of the obstacles he encountered). The deck took much longer to complete than expected, not through any fault of Kent, but because of bad weather and an astounding amount of red tape and bureaucracy with our city. The new required codes amount to extreme overkill, and most of the bureaucrats Kent had to deal with were not very hellpful. That being said, once Kent and his assistant got to work, things moved quickly. The workmanship and attention to detail are excellent. Some aspects of the deck had to be decided as they went along, and each time an issue arose, Kent would consult with me before proceeding. They worked tirelessly (especially Kent), many days into the night, in an effort to make up for lost time. I believe his costs were a bit lower because they did everything themselves. For example, instead of ordering lumber and having it delivered, they personally selected all their materials and transported it themselves. I would definitely use Kent (KDM Contractors) again and would recommend him to others. He's a hard worker, fair, conscientious and a good guy. And he's a true craftsman!
Description of Work: Remove old deck and concrete supports, regrade, install new concrete pilings to code, build a completely new deck, conforming to new codes while retaining original design concept.

Kent and KDM did an unbelievable job on our front porch. The new structure completely changed the look of the front of our home. Their attention to detail was very impressive. Kent took our ideas and made them come to life. He gave us options that allowed the project to come in at our budget. I recommend KDM and I will use them again.

They were right on time and worked really hard. The owner explained things really well and answered all my questions.. He took it on step further and actually put in extra detail on the deck that I hadn't really asked for. He made realistic suggestions like not covering the back of the deck since it would be easy to get any animals out that came in. We are relocating to Philadelphia and I asked them if they would come there and do construction work and they said that they would consider it if it was a big enough job.

KDM Contracting This company was recommended to me by another contractor. His son worked there. I looked them up on Angie?s List, but no one had yet rated them. So I got a couple of estimates from different people, and these guys came in pretty cheaply. I originally was going to contract for a bathroom re-do, and moving a wall in my kitchen. I realized before they started the work that I needed a permit, and checked with them about it. I was told ?Getting a permit is at the discretion of the homeowner. We do not do it. You really don?t want the government to know you are doing upgrades, because your taxes may go up.? Having watched enough ?Holmes on Homes? I realized this was a red flag and canceled the part of the contract for moving the wall?.which would have entailed moving HVAC, electrical and structural work?..all of which require a permit. I decided to see how they did on the small bathroom renovation?.basically re-tiling a floor and installing a new toilet and vanity, that I purchased. These guys bid low, then everything becomes an additional cost. Another $50 because the water shut off valves were bad. When they created holes in the dry-wall, it was another $100 to repair that. I found out before they started that the dry wall behind the toilet and the subflooring under the toilet was bad, so I knew I would have to pay more to fix both?..another $100 and $250 respectively. Door replacement: They also replaced 3 outside doors. Again, they broke the molding around the front door on the inside, and I was told ?We cover the things on the outside, not the inside. To fix that is extra.? They didn?t eve point that out to me, I had to find it myself?.they put back broken trim. They also broke 2 tiles in my front hallway and asked me what I wanted to do about it. I left it alone, since I am going to replace that tile, but what if I weren?t? On the front door that was replaced the contractor threw out part of the door (the hole covers for the inside trim) because he didn?t know what it was. He then told me to go to a home store and ?steal some off another door.? Bathroom work: I had to watch these guys the whole time?..the tile guy wasn?t going to finish the last row of tiles because ?The vanity will just cover it up.? I made him do it all anyway. I might want to change the vanity some day. Also, they patched dry-wall behind the toilet, but replaced the toilet before sanding the drywall. I was told by Kent that he could do it just fine anyway. It is a mess back there. When they replaced a section of sub-floor, I noticed a 1 inch gap. Ed told me ?I?ll just mud over it?. It happened to be in a structural area, and I pointed out that there was nothing to hold the mud up?..it would just fall to the ceiling board below. So he said ?Ok, I guess I could put a 2 by 4 under there.? If I hadn?t been here to double check and re-direct and offer to pay every time something came up, it would have been a disaster. The final problem was during the installation of my new, expensive vanity. Kent screwed it into the wall, and damaged the cabinet in the process. When I pointed that out he said ?No one will see that anyway.? These guys try to get away with the least work, and do not clean up after themselves either. I would not use them again. Finally, I also found out that the sales guy ?was in trouble? because he mis-quoted the job. When I cancelled the one part that required the permit, the salesman told me the price for the other stuff would change. I told him if pricing changed, I would cancel the whole job. They agreed to do it for the price I was quoted, but as you can see, they charged me an extra $500 anyway. I ended up with ok work, but I wouldn?t have these guys come again. Pricing isn?t fixed, and they try to cover up stuff they?ve done wrong. You?ll note they have multiple names?..that alone is a red flag. How many different times have they reincorporated to get out of bad work they?ve done?

Response from KDM Contractors
The short story on this job is simply that the customer "pulled-out" of our original signed contract. (I could have legally kept her earnest $ and walked, but I gave her "credit" for the down payment she had already made.) Thinking she was a General Contractor after watching a couple episodes of Holmes on Homes. She was very animate on not paying much for some "simple" improvements. So I was hired as an installer. She was the supervisor and supplier of the material. Needless to say ALL of the items had issues before I had even oppened the boxes (ex: wrong size toilets, wrong spread on the sink faucets. missing filler strips for custom cabinets, not enough tile, etc...) It is also important to follow the proper steps in proper order on a construction project or the project will not turn out as well as hoped. It is important to trust the contractors decisions, but if the customer wants me to follow orders, I will oblige. After all, the customer is always right! PLEASE, ask questions first, and understand what you are getting into...I personally have over 20 years experience in Home Remodeling. I take much pride in my work, and pride also in my business.
