I called Scott (after finding him on Angie's List) for a rush job to disconnect a window exhaust fan when I learned that the replacement window was arriving earlier than expected. Regardless of the puny size of this job, Scott responded promptly and came to complete the work the very next day. By the time he arrived, I realized there were a number of other smallish tasks I might request him to complete as I was also doing a complete home clean-out (dumpster on its way to driveway later that day). Both Scott and his helper responded pleasantly and professionally, performing all the additional work and carrying the debris out to my garage to await the dumpster's arrival. Scott was very pleasant and professional in his demeanor and I will definitely call on him again.
Description of Work: Disconnect window exhaust fan, remove old electric baseboard heaters and thermostat, remove florescent drop ceiling light fixtures, remove defective under cabinet light.

I called them on Wednesday, hoping to set up an appointment for the following week, assuming they would be booked that far in advance. They said they would be available Friday (2 days after call). They arrived prior to the estimated time and set immediately to work. About 1.5 hours later, the problems had been solved, with new parts inserted where necessary. As a note, these lamp posts had been acting up for years, but other electricians couldn't seem to find and correct the problems.
Description of Work: Post lights (4) were not working. They located the problems, replaced a breaker on the circuit board, and installed a new light sensor on a post where the sensor was not working.

They arrived very promptly and were nice and friendly the whole time they were there. Quality job. The dishwasher works great! When they were running a line to the main breaker box, they noticed that the power running to our washer/dryer was not up to code and could be hazardous. He replaced that wiring for no charge. Thanks for looking out for us Scott!

Project went very well and, the crew did a good job of cleanup. The job took 2 hours and was completed on 9/4/12.
Description of Work: On Wednesday 8/22, I called Scott Nelson Electric Inc. to schedule an appointment for an estimate for two projects. Scott was very prompt returning my call the same day and he agreed to come to our home on Thursday 8/23 to give us an estimate. He arrived on time and was very friendly, courteous and knowledgeable. I explained to Scott the service I wanted done. First a new additional GFCI receptacle outlet in our master bath. He ran a new circuit line from our basement, pass through our concrete crawlspace and up the wall to our master bath. Second I wanted Scott to relocate and rewire a Malibu 45 watt power low voltage landscape lighting pack from the exterior of my backyard wall into my basement, also adding a new receptacle outlet in the basement.

The ceiling fan in our sun room was not responding to the remote. I called Scott. One of his employees was assigned to check out the problem. Scott and his employee decided together that I needed a new fan. When I shopped for a replacement, I discovered a fan which I would like in my kitchen. As a result, Scott's team removed the current kitchen fan and installed it in the sunroom. The new ceiling fan was installed in my kitchen. BTW, Scott and his people are very prompt. The appointment was scheduled for "around noon". They arrived at 11 am. As always, the employees were polite, engaging, and professional. Both rooms were fully cleaned when they left. I would never consider calling anyone else for electrical work.

Everything went perfectly. I really appreciate Scott's approach and thoroughness. He was creative in devising a cost effective way to run upgraded wiring to the new water heater without having to cut open walls to run new conduit. And as so many others who have already written reviews have said: the whole job was done in a very professional manner, on time, clean, courteous, etc. Everything you could want. I chose Scott because of all the great reviews he has received here on Angie's List, and he completely lived up to his reputation. Put me down as another highly satisfied customer.
Description of Work: Scott and his team installed a sub-panel, upgraded wiring, and completed all other necessary electrical work so that I could have an electric whole-house tankless water heater installed.

As above, it was a very frustrating, long problem to fix and almost $500 for some small upgrades that didn't really effect the issue. Can't be too happy about that. In the end, it took lots of screaming to ComEd, as well as problem worsening, for it to be found. Those intermittent problems are the hardest to fix. I guess I wish Scott had suggested calling ComEd rather than my deciding to after researching. With such varied parts of the house involved, seems it was likely to be outside of the house problem. But I'm no electrician either......
Description of Work: Addendum to first report. After the visit on 8/19, the problems were really unchanged. Despite some fairly minor upgrades, the intermittent outages in various rooms in the house continued in an unpredictable manner. Different electricians returned on the following day, determined to find problem. I again told them of my concern that multiple circuit involvement was very strange. Could it be from outside the house? They again checked circuit board, checked line at meter and said no. Spent another couple hours in house finding several smallish problems and I paid an additional $202 to bring total to $486. Again, problems persisted right away, so the third day Scott and helpers came determined to find problem. Again, no "smoking gun" found and finally Scott said next step would be to rewire whole house- I think only half joking. Did not charge us for that third visit that was a considerable amt of time itself. When the problems were unchanged, I did some research that suggested to me that problem was likely an "open line" outside, so I called ComEd. Initially they said it checked out but made a change at the meter that they said would tell us if problem was inside or out. Completely different lights and appliances were now effected which they said meant it was a ComEd problem. Called again. No response x 3 days until suddenly lights, TV, computers, etc were all flashing on and off suddenly. Eventually I turned everything off, called repeatedly and they showed up at 12:30 AM after no power for 6 hours. Found " a near complete break in the buried line coming into the house. Crew would be here in AM to dig up and repair." Returned from work following day to find no power and after again multiple ComEd calls, another guy came to say the crew to dig up and repair line found nothing wrong so left without any work! I was livid, but another guy came out (the fourth one, if you are keeping score) and again said there was a broken line in ground. Called crew out to dig it up. Right before digging up lawn, he went up pole (which several other of them had done, or at least said they had done) and found a connection problem that cured the problem. So five Com Ed crews came out before problem was fixed, in addition to three days of dedicated work by Scott and crew. Seems to finally be working as of 8/30. About a month of problems and multiple man hours of work to solve. I don't blame Scott but there did seem to be some tunnel vision and it seems a little strange that it was my research and persisting with Com Ed that ultimately found the problem. Sco

My appointment was scheduled for later in the day but Mark called and asked if he could come earlier. He arrived shortly. He was personable and was thorough when diagnosing the problems. The doorbell connections had burned out but now works. My master bedroom fan did not work. The electric going to the fan and the switch was fine but unfortunately, my ceiling fan needs replacement. I will definitely call them again.

Scott and team arrived early, performed all work professionally and with great attitude. Some portions of the job were very difficult but the men got the job completed with no complaints. All three guys knew exactly what they were doing and did the job well. I only wish this company were in the state we are moving too. I would use no one use. We have even recommended Scott's company to a general contractor that we have used in the past.
Description of Work: After a home inspection for purchaser of our home, we hired Scott Nelson's company (because of Angie's reviews) to complete the electrical work. He had to install 6 GFI's, rewire electric range, ceiling fan, outside post light, kitchen disposal, removal of circuit breaker box, clean and paint inside of box, remove rust from box and install plywood backing. The post light work alone took them one-half day to complete and done well.

Scott and his helper (I am sorry, I am forgetting his name!) were on time and were very pleasant and professional. They replaced all the nonworking sockets, the light over the sink, and the switch in the main bathroom very quickly. They checked the ceiling fan/light and showed that the fan and light themselves worked, but the remote did not work further than about a foot from the fan, (which hangs from a cathedral ceiling), and because of the configuration of the remote receiver in the fan, I would not simply be able to simply replace the remote. I have no way of knowing that he is correct, but he was correct about everything else, so I don't see why he wouldn't be about that. I didn't have them do any work on the fan because I am not ready to spend the money for a new fan and installment. They set the fan so that I can at least turn it off and on from the wall switch. They were clean and neat and pleasant. The only problem that came up is that Scott did not have the right size socket for the light strip in my front bathroom. He says it rarely happens that he doesn't have the correct size socket. He did put another socket in, but since it doesn't fit exactly (it sticks out a little more than the other sockets and bulbs) he did not charge me for that repair. Overall I am pleased with his service and I am thrilled to have LIGHT in my house where there should be light again. All these types of home repairs seem expensive to me, but he gave me a 10% discount for being a new customer, and he didn't charge for the socket that wasn't quite right, so I think his prices are probably fair.
Description of Work: I had multiple sockets that were not working in various rooms of my house. I had a entire light fixture in my main bathroom that was not working. I had a light over my kitchen sink that hadn't worked for some time. I had a socket in my small bathroom that was not working. I had a problem getting my ceiling fan to work with the remote (very high ceiling) in my living room. Scott and his helper fixed/changed all the sockets, changed the light over my kitchen sink, checked the ceiling fan to see what was wrong, and changed the switch in the main bathroom.
.Mr. Nelson & His two Men are the Most Reliable Company I have ever used ! Their has been 4 to 5 Major Projects that they had to do for me over the past Year. They always make sure it is Perfect.(like they are doing the work in their own Home). They have Great Manors. They bring me Catalogs to look for New Lighting Fixtures to choose from. They are always on Time. Most of all-They make very Important suggestions to me in order to make my Work Safe (& at the same time, they do it in the most cost efficient way).
Description of Work: 1) They Started out by Self Teaching themselves a Complicated LED Color Changing Lighting System. This was a 1/2 done job that they Figured out which is always hard to do,particularly if their was two other companys that left it Half done. This Job was Completed.2) They ran Power (Low Voltage) inside a High Voltage Piping. This was my Idea & they felt it was a Good idea. We both know that the wire is Double Safe and I felt a At Ease knowing this. This Job was Completed.3) They recommended Replace Various Wire Runs that look like they would Burn Out in the near Future."I will safe a lot of Money by Spending a Fair amount Now. This Job was Completed. 4) Their are a Bunch of other smaller Jobs that they have done for me: Like Mounting a Piece Sign Wall Fixture in my Child's Room. They Move Wall Outlets. They Put in New Dimmer Switches. This job was Completed.

Scott recommended a route for installing electrical for the new coachlight on the garage, and I said politely that we preferred a way that another contractor had recommended. He then said, "I can do it any way you want, but it sounds like you don't feel comfortable with our work, and I think you should go with the other contractor. You should go with what you are comfortable because it's your house." I apologized if I had offended him and said that wasn't the case. But he clearly no longer wanted to work with us and drove away without providing a written estimate. I have never before seen such unprofessionalism and unwillingness to work with what the customer wants. I am shocked, since he has an A rating. I may later find that every other electrician recommends doing it his way, but I did not receive a good explanation from Scott of why his way was best. I am still baffled at what went wrong with this interaction. He seemed overly sensitive, and I feel badly that I apparently offended him. I certainly did not mean to.
Description of Work: Scott gave an oral and reasonable estimate for installing an add-on coachlight on our garage.

Response from Scott Nelson Electric Inc
Member, I'm sorry that you feel that way. Well, it was your wife, not you, who I spoke with. You also stated on your report that you wouldn't hire me again,When in fact, I never actually worked for you in the first place. We always go above and beyond to make sure that our installations and repairs meet both national and local code requirements, as well as doing our best to make sure that the cosmetics of the interior and exterior of the home are not blemished. I only suggested that we run the conduit through the attic of the garage and not to run it exposed in your garage, which is drywalled. The other electrician wanted to run it exposed which is much easier. I was even going to make sure that I installed new finished backplates that contour to the siding on not only the one we would be adding, but also the 2 existing ones as well to give it a nice finished look. I was in the middle of writing up your estimate, when your wife came out and said, in a very negative tone, that she wanted it ran exposed because the other electrician said" it would be better to run it exposed so you can get to the conduit if something goes wrong with it". Obviously your Electrician isn't very confident of his work. The whole house is wired in conduit that is not exposed, so why should this installation be any different. I didn't understand the reasoning behind all of this at all, so I only suggested that she use the other electrician because she seemed to approve of his methods. The reason I did not submit a written quote for this project is because I couldn't send one of my Electricians to this job and take the chance of them receiving the same abuse that I did. I rarely turn down a job, no matter how big or small, but I will not be treated like that by anyone. You also stated that I was very unprofessional. Well, I have over 80 possitive reports and reviews from your fellow Angies List members. I received the "SUPER SERVICE AWARD" in 2010 for electrical. In 2011, I received it again,in three different categories, electrical, lighting, and ceiling fans.I am also a "2011 Chicago best Contractor" according to the 2 page article written about my company in the February issue if Angies List Magazine. I think that about says it all, don't you? I do hope that you are happy with the company that you have chosen for your project, and that they go above and beyond to fit all of your electrical needs. Sincerely, Scott A. Nelson President Scott Nelson Electric Inc.

Scott is awesome. He spent 45 minutes inspecting what was needed, gave me a free estimate (no charge to look at it). He assessed the house for aluminum wiring, turned out only mains and one circuit was aluminum and needed changing to copper. Also needed about 8 GFI outlets installed. Gave a quote, 10% angies list discount, came back did all work, and was so up front, polite, and just plain honest.I wholeheartedly give this Electrician my highest recommendation.
