I could not be happier with Scott's work. I wish I had found him for the first phase of re-wiring in my house, which is 100 years old and had knob and tube electrical wiring in parts of the house when we moved in. Scott's work replaced the last of that old wiring. The post and porch lights stopped working when the kitchen was remodeled and we had no idea where the electricity to the porch was coming from. It was cut by remodeling work that happened at the opposite end of the house. I got 3 quotes. The 2nd and 3rd quote were for $1,000 each. Scott quoted $400-$500. They all planned on tying into a wall outlet near the entry way of the living room. I eliminated one vendor because he had no experience working in older homes and no intention of repairing the walls he would be opening up. The other "$1000 electrician" did not check under the porch to look for the where the post light connected to the house. He was pretty sure he would need to drill through the floor of the entrance to get from the wall outlet to under the porch. I was dreading the final look of the front entrance if he did this -- even though his quote included repair work. (Coming up from the basement was not an option.) Scott crawled under the porch (as I had suggested to each) and felt pretty sure the post light wiring ran up to the ceiling porch light. That meant wiring only through the ceiling not the floor. And, he had a lot of experience working on older homes in Evanston. Scott and his assistant arrived promptly on the day of the work. He laid down tarps to protect all of the areas where they would be working. He opened the wall outlet, cut a hole in the wall above it for a new switch. Then he opened a small hole at the top of the wall and 2 small holes in the ceiling, which he used to drill into the roof of the porch. By removing the porch light and using those few holes, he was able to pull wiring from the outlet up to the switch and to the porch light (where he found the post light wiring as we had both hoped!) He did not cut into the floor and he did not cut into the roof of the porch -- which is made of bead board and would have been very hard to repair. When he finished, his assistant patched the walls so well, they were ready to be painted. Then, they completely cleaned up the small amount of mess they had made. And, as promised, he only charged for time and materials: $355.00! --- not the $400-$500 of his quote which he said was the highest he would charge no matter how long it took him to finish the job. To say I am impressed with Scott and his skills and work ethic is an understatement!

Description of Work: Had to troubleshoot lighting circuit I blew at my daughters house while installing ceiling fan. Mark and Mike showed up exactly on time, and in less than 30min. had solved the circuit problem and even re-installed the ceiling fan. Then on to my 130 year old house for some serious troubleshooting. Took them about 3 hours of systematic probing but they discovered the problem ,problem solved.i

Scott promptly came out for estimate. Looked over situation and gave estimate for time and material. Two of his guys came out on time and got to work. Most of the work was straightforward. They got to the problem quickly. The problem circuit was a challenge. After fixture and switches were installed the power was there. Made it appear that MY original diagnosis was way off(no power at all). Then the circuit did fail. It was eventually traced to a loose connection 6 feet away from the fixtures. Something I would never have found. Problem corrected. Mike and Ben were efficient and safe, and stayed with the problem until solved. Nice guys also. A good experience and good work done.

I was very pleased with the timely response provided to install a high end dining room light fixture. When Mike and an assistant got started, they realized that the fixture had been assembled incorrectly by the manufacturer. I called the company and they were able to talk through a resolution so that the work could be completed that day. This was an otherwise straightforward job but I appreciated their on time arrival, quality workmanship, and reasonable price. I would not hesitate to use Scott Nelson Electric again in the future and will recommend them to others.

Scott was responsive, and helpful at every step. Most impressive, though, was the fact that he did not charge us a penny for his visit! He found that we already had the necessary electrical system in place for a sump pump, and wished us luck with our move! What an incredibly honest man! He could easily have charged us a fixed cost for the visit, but he is more honest than that. Wonderful! I highly recommend him to everyone!

The first time I used Scott Nelson Electric was three weeks ago when I had some work done. I was told the circuit panel I had was not a very reliable panel and I should think about having it replaced. I scheduled an appointment to have the circuit panel replaced along with the bathroom light strip and wall timer. Mark and Mike arrived on time and quickly started working to get everything disconnected from the old circuit panel. During this time Scott stopped by to see how things were going. While Mark worked on the panel, Mike started on the bathroom light, alternating between the bathroom light and helping Mark when needed. They were professional and courteous and never hesitated to answer any of my questions. When all the wires were connected to the new panel they diligently checked every light and labeled the panel accordingly. The wall timer was installed and they had the power back up and running in less than four hours. I was very happy to see how these two guys worked so well together to get the job done in a timely manner. I now feel safer knowing the old panel is gone and I have a new bathroom light and wall timer. I will definitely use this company again whenever the need arises. I have complete confidence it them.

Chose Scott Nelson from Angie's list, along with 3 other electricians. He drove probably over an hour to come out just to give me his quote. Professional and very fair pricing compared to the others. He had a team of 3 show up and they just hammered the work out. Nice, courteous guys. Not much to tell - it is great when things just go smooth. Everything was done to our satisfaction. Scott showed up midway through the work to check in. Only thing I thought was lacking was a phone call from Scott next day to check in and make sure everything was completed to our satisfaction, since he wasn't there when the job was done. I was so happy with everything else though - giving them all A's.
Description of Work: Had a variety of work done - 2 ceiling fans, some electrical work in a basement closet, installed electrical box on outside of house, removed and replaced two ceiling fixtures, removed and replaced bathroom exhaust fan.

I had a project with a tight deadline. To facilitate it I personally went to the city - paid his license and permit (he license was not up to date). He asked me to do that to expedite. So at a minimum I'm out the $50 to pay for his license. Luckily I found another electrician who was professional. Here's the email string: He basically said he needed a delay of a week to get parts for an upgrade to 200 amps. Mon, May 20, 2013 at 7:43 AM Scott Nelson to John John,I apologize, but I am going to have to postpone your service upgrade until Wednesday, may 29th. I'm waiting for some of the material I ordered, and it will not arrive until the end of this week or beginning of next. I also am waiting for the electrical inspector to call back with answers to some questions that I have.I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and I would understand if you want to go with another contractor that could get it done this week.Sincerely,Scott A. Nelson Mon, May 20, 2013 at 8:13 AM John to Scott Nelson I don't buy that you can't get the parts - wow - this is going to a big problem. Mon, May 20, 2013 at 8:57 AM Scott Nelson to John What are you saying that I'm lying to you? Obviously you don't know me and my reputation. I constantly go out of my way for my customers. You know what, I will just go ahead and just cancel the order

I am sorry that you feel that way, and I'm glad that you found a contractor that would work with you. You have my license mistaken for the permit fee. My license is updated at the beginning of January every year. It was the permit fee that you had to pay. First of all, you had a big rush on this project, and I arranged my schedule to fit you in less then a week after the estimate. Both of my suppliers did not have the meter with a main disconnect, something that the city of Park Ridge requires, in stock. It wouldn't be until after the scheduled day to do the work that the part would arrive. It was completely out of my control. Sometimes we are at the mercy of our suppliers. I can't do the job if I don't have the parts I need. You wouldn't wait a few more days for the part to arrive, and accused me of lying about it. Why would I lie, when this project would have given us a couple of days work. That makes no sense. Then I found out something interesting from the city when I called to take my company off the permit. When I first came to look at the project, you acted as if the house was yours, when it actually is owned by a senior citizen that you do work for. I gave a price to upgrade the main electrical service and you took it upon yourself to use my license number to not only apply for a permit for the main service as we discussed, but for other work on the house that we never discussed. This leads me to believe that you or someone else was going to be doing this extra work under my electrical contractors license. My license is very important to me, and a privilege to have. The last thing I want is someone taking it and using it in such a way. Maybe I should thank my supplier for not having the part. It kept me from doing business with someone that cannot be trusted. Sincerely, Scott A. Nelson

I called Scott and left a voice mail, he called me back within 30 minutes. I told him my bathroom lights were flickering when I used my new flat iron. I never had this problem before so I was worried something was wrong with the wiring. Scott was very kind to squeeze me in on Friday afternoon. Mike arrived and quickly started checking the wires in the bathroom and in other outlets in nearby rooms to see if they were running on the same line as the bathroom. Mike couldn't find any problem with the wiring. He thought it might be a faulty flat iron and suggested I purchase another iron. As it turns out it was a faulty flat iron. I bought a new flat iron today and it works great, no flickering lights (thanks Mike). Mike also installed a new ceiling fan which looks great and checked an outlet in the basement which turned out to be fine. While Mike was checking the wiring he also checked the circuit panel and alerted me that the brand of panel we had has had problems in the past due to arcing and could be dangerous. I went on the Internet and looked up the brand and sure enough there was a big write-up on this brand of circuit panel. I want to thank Mike very much for pointing this out to me. No other electrician has ever mentioned this potential hazard. I will be calling Scott after the holiday to set up an appointment to have that panel replaced. Thank goodness for Angie's List, without this great service I never would have found Scott Nelson Electric.

I called Scott for an estimate for my lighting work and scheduled time for him to come out and review what I needed done. He accommodated my schedule and was prompt and professional when he arrived. I received Scott's estimate within 24 hours and, after reviewing estimates from several different providers for my work, I elected to engage Scott. His estimate was fair in price and spot on with what I was looking to have done. We arranged a mutually acceptable time for Scott and his crew to perform the work. They arrived right on time and were pleasant and knowledgeable. They set about doing each task efficiently and quickly. Everything was installed to my satisfaction and Scott and his crew were very easy to work with. They made a minimal mess, even when cutting the necessary holes in my walls to install my sconces. I was very pleased that they were able to make such small holes and still accomplish the job at hand. I expected much more extensive repair work. In addition, they also did the initial patching for each hole they made. After they finished, in far less time than I expected, they cleaned up nicely. I am very pleased with the work, knowledge and professionalism of Scott and his crew and am very happy to have a trusted provider to reach out to in the future.

My husband and I got estimates from the top three highest rated electricians on Angie's List. All 3 electricians were punctual, professional and nice. I was worried that I would want to choose Scott simply because he was so friendly, but when we got the quotes Scott's was the most reasonable and they do patching work included. They were able to do the entire project in just 2 days and never while we were home. On the first day when I walked into my home and saw the new lighting it was so flawless it looked like we had always had recessed lighting rather than track lighting or no overhead lighting. None of our furniture or decorative items were disturbed. They were quick, professional, friendly, reasonably priced and the work they did was perfect! I will never use another electrician. I don't typically write reviews, but I was so impressed with their work that I was compelled to write one in this case, I highly recommend them.
Description of Work: We are first time home owners and moved into a townhouse that has an incredible amount of natural light, but almost no overhead lighting. We were looking to install additional overhead lighting in our kitchen, living room, basement and bedroom. This project also involved rewiring for cabling, wall-mounting a TV, taking down existing old light fixtures, and adding new switches to access light panels from opposite ends of the room.

The service was performed quickly. The electrician was great.
Description of Work: I lost power in 4 rooms of our house when we turned on a light switch on in the kitchen. It seemed obvious a short blew out the power in the kitchen and 3 other rooms. I found Scott Nelson on Angie's list. I called and left a message and the owner called back a half hour later. Mark, the electrician was at my house in a few hours. Mark had to trace the lines and found a burned out outlet in my family room. It was caused by a short in my kitchen fixture. He removed the fixture and replaced the wiring in the outlets. Mark was friendly and explained everything he was going to do. He said he could take the fixture and get it rewired for a very low cost and come back to hang it when it is ready. There will be an additional low cost. My other option was to replace the fixture but I would rather have it repaired.

Scott Nelson provided me a quote the week prior to the work being scheduled. On the day of the scheduled service, two of Scott's workers, lead by Mike, showed up early. They immediately got to work and was done in a timely and efficient manner. I forgot to mention to Scott that I used Angie's List to contact him for the estimate, so when Mike asked how we heard about the company, I mentioned Angie's List and Mike took 5% off of the bill. Very satisfied with the work and will be calling them soon to work on my other house.

I don't want to pay for two electricians when one is just watching the other. I would prefer to use companies that critically evaluate the situation in my home before they start work so that unnecessary work is not done.
Description of Work: We experienced a loss of power in the basement of our home. We assumed that it was a blown circuit breaker in our box in the garage that wouldn't reset. We called and they sent two very young electricians to our home. They replaced the circuit breaker and still the power did not come on the basement. Then he actually evaluated the situation and found that the downstairs power was from a small breaker box hidden in the basement. All he had to do was flip the circuit breaker switch. He mentioned that the breaker he replaced was too big for the basement any way but still charged me for the work. It turns out that the breaker was to the old stove which was replaced by a gas variety and disconnected. Useless repair in the end. They sent two guys one of which just watched but charged me for both of them. They were slow, unprofessional, but did fix the problem in the end at a high rate.

Hello (deleted member name), I have spoken to our Service Manager regarding your service call. There was an experienced Electrician and a 2nd year apprentice sent to your home to trace down a short and do other misc. repairs. The assistant changed several bad 3way switches and broken pull chain lights in your basement while our electrician traced down & repaired the short. There was an electrician and an assistant working at your home for 2 hours, and you weren't even charged a service call fee, just straight time. I don't see that there should be an issue with anything. Our company has won several awards since we have been in business. Not just only Super Service Awards for the last three years, but we were also awarded as a "2011 Best Contractor", and this year we recieved the "2013 Torch Award" from the Better Business Bureau for outstanding business ethics. The electrician that was at your home has won a state competition in electrical installation, service, and repair. The end of this month, he will be competing in the national finals down in Alabama for a 3 day competition. He recently had an article written about him in Construction Magazine. I am sorry that you were disappointed with our service, and I wish you had contacted me directly with this issue. We could have worked something out, because the last thing we want is an unhappy customer. Sincerely, Scott A. Nelson President SCOTT NELSON ELECTRIC INC.
