Tiger Plumbing, Heating, Air Conditioning, & Electrical Services takes pride in being your preferred local plumbers, electricians, and HVAC technicians! In fact, more homeowners in the St. Louis Metro East & Central Illinois communities we serve, say they would call us again before any other plumbing, electrical, heating, or air conditioning service!

"My technician Keith was great. Friendly and super informative. Also too a quick look at the entire drainage system and gave my an idea of where problems will pop up the future without preventative measures (my home was built in the 50s and while the previous owners took really good care of the house nothing has been gutted and replaced yet)."

Residential and business water treatment systems. Water softeners, UV lights. We will analyze your water for contaminants such as chlorine, low pH, iron, bacteria, and devise a system to suit your needs. Treat your water from the source, as it enters your home, so whether you are drinking it, cooking with it or bathing in it, your water is pure.

"The process was quick and easy. I just provided a water sample. It was determined that I had high levels of chlorine in our drinking water. I was able to solve my water problems with only one filter. Why did I wait years to have this done? Now I can be confident that our water is safe. Highly recommended."

Sunkel Plumbing has been trusted in McLean County since 1955! We are a locally owned and operated family business specializing residential plumbing, drain cleaning, pipe lining, plumbing repairs, water heaters, sewer systems, gas pipes, garbage disposals, water filtration, kitchen remodeling, and bathroom remodeling.

"***Update: I finally had a chance to talk to Jason, the owner. We had a very cordial conversation about the events in the OP. He was open to feedback. He apologized for the bad experience I had with his business, and he committed to taking it as a learning opportunity. While I still cannot recommend the business, I will say that Jason seems like a decent guy that cares deeply about his hard-earned reputation. Thanks for taking the time, Jason.***           Initial Review: I had a clogged tub drain. I needed it snaked. I've used national brands/franchises in the past for such needs, but I'm trying to be more conscious about shopping locally, so I googled "plumbers" and Sunkel had the best rating, so I called them and scheduled an appointment. So far, so good. The guy shows up, is amiable enough, we make small talk while he scopes out the situation. He punches a bunch of stuff into his mobile device...and spits out a quote for $550. I told him to get out of my house. He tries to back-pedal with "well, I can call my boss and see what we can do"...to which I say absolutely not. Your first offer should be your best offer. If it's not, I immediately have a trust issue...because it's a big red flag that you're trying to take advantage of the urgency involved in the situation. Then this joker has the beach ball-sized giblets to try to shake me down for $95 for...and yes, I quote..."coming to the door". 30 minutes after kicking this guy out of my house, I look out my front window and HE'S SITTING IN MY DRIVEWAY MESSING AROUND WITH HIS PHONE! I went outside and had to bang on the side of the truck to get his attention. I screamed "get the f--- off my property!!". He gave me a weird look and left. Cherry on top -- dude missed the driveway and now I have a big tire rut in my front yard...smh... So, what do I do? I call the office and ask for the boss. Receptionist Vicky (who was super helpful when scheduling the appointment) says he's busy. I say that's fine, I'll wait on hold. I hear an annoyed sigh (I can hear her rolling her eyes through the phone). She says I can't do that, she'll take a message. I told her the above situation. she said boss will call me back ASAP. That was 5 hours ago, not surprise, no call... So yeah, Sunkel just made my list of things to do. If she thought the first call was annoying...boy howdy, y'all are in for a treat!! So, resolution to the situation came when I called around to other local plumbers. Most couldn't do it on such short notice, but I eventually was able to get an extremely competent and find a company who sent a professional technician to my door to fix the situation inside of an hour for $220. $550 indeed, Sunkel. $550 indeed."

People pleasing solutions since 1984. Popejoy Incorporated is the premier dealer of all the latest commercial and residential products including Trane, Weil McLain, Generac, Northstar Products, Delta, and many more.

"Made an appointment. I was given a half hour window, told we were the first appointment of the day. ( 8:30). At 9:20, called and was told that someone was coming, but couldn't promise when. At 11:40, received a message that someone was on my way. A customers time is just as valuable as the service provider. This company does not seem to understand this position. I imagine they put me on the pay no mind list because it was only for the installation of a couple of items. I don't think the bill would have been more than a couple of hundred of dollars. I was actually going to have them give me a quote for a generator and expecting a cost somewhere between 5 and 7thousand. There are a lot of electrical companies out there. Use someone else. Alternatively, if you do use them expect them to be late."

Water softener services FAQs

The license requirements for water softener installation depend on your location. Some municipalities require that the installer hold a plumbing license, some require a permit and an inspection, but no license for the installer, and some require a permit and a license for the installer. Regardless of the local laws in your area, it’s always a good idea to hire a licensed plumber or installer. These pros will install your system properly and have the experience to size the system appropriately. Use Angi’s state licensing tool to check your installer’s license status.

The cost to install a water softener system is $1,500 on average, ranging between $200 and $6,000. The labor for water softener work typically costs between $150 and $1,000, so you can add that to your equipment costs to get an accurate total. Your price will depend on many factors, including the following:

  • System capacity

  • Home size

  • Water hardness levels

  • Type of water softener

  • Presence of electricity in the installation area

  • Local permit costs

Water softeners are worth the money if you live in an area with hard water. Hard water is safe to drink, but it poses serious threats to your plumbing system. The minerals in hard water will gradually build up on the inside walls of your pipes, reducing water flow to your fixtures. The minerals can also gradually corrode your plumbing system, reduce its lifespan, and increase the risk of leaks. Hard water also makes soap and detergent less effective. Water softener systems can solve all these issues, making them a great investment.

It’s possible to install a water softener yourself, but we don’t recommend it. Water softeners require working with copper pipes and electrical wiring, neither are suitable tasks for most DIYers. Plus, working with water and electricity together is dangerous and could pose a risk to your safety. Water softeners also need to be calibrated so that they don’t make your water too soft, as soft water poses just as many risks as hard water. Overall, it’s well worth hiring a local water softener installer to place your water softener system.

Your water softener size is based on your total household water consumption. In most cases, you can assume the average household member will use around 75 gallons per day. Multiply that by the number of people in your home, then multiply by 10 (for the typical grains per gallon). You’ll get a number in grains that should help roughly size your water softener. However, it’s best to hire a professional to install your system and use more exact numbers, like your exact average water consumption per day and starting water hardness.
