We received quotes from multiple companies. We decided to go with Top Notch because they were in the middle price range, were responsive to our calls and questions, and professional. Bill came out to give a quote. He walked us through exactly what they would do and what to expect on the day the tree would come down. He even shared information about how to check a company's insurance. This job was dangerous because our very large tree was over power lines We needed a company that had the appropriate insurance coverage for this job. Also we did not want heavy equipment in the backyard that would tear up the lawn. On the day of the job my husband was here and was very very impressed at the ability of their tree climber. He did an exceptional job along with the entire crew. The job was completed in one day. They left the yard in great shape (as if they had never been there...except for the tree being gone). We would recommend this company to anyone.

They did the above work as agreed to in the original contract plus the extra dead tree. I was impressed with the crew lead Juan who worked longer then I expected on the tree roots inside the fence by the site of future sidewalk and on the eight stumps located out by the future garage. With their chipper they provided us with a pile of wood chips as requested. I also noticed they went back with rakes and neatened up the edges of the pile of wood chips. As I went to write the check, I asked Bob if he would reconsider the quote for a large (very) dead tree against a neighbor’s 8-foot chain link fence in the back of some dense woods. Bob asked his lead person Martin who had cut down the two trees and trimmed a third to look at it. Martin said it would not be a problem. Bob cautioned him not to get to high in the large tree that had been dead long enough to have no remaining bark. We then came to an agreement to have them just drop it into the dense woods on my side and cut the trunk into smaller sections. They cut down the tree as agreed to below the top of the fence, cut up the large trunk sections and leave in the woods. They were also able to get the tree limbs out of the canopy of trees surrounding it. At one point with the trees in front, I asked if they could stack a few of the smaller logs back near my garage that I could use in my fire pit. After they left I walked around the garage and did not see the logs anywhere, I later found they had actually walked them all the way back to the fire pit and stacked them neatly at the end of my cord of stacked wood.
Description of Work: Removed two large trees between fence and house/patio, trimmed large tree between fence and house. Ground stumps on both trees removed inside fence. Ground surface roots around one tree in path of future sidewalk. Ground two stumps (one very large) behind current garage to below surface. Ground eight stumps deep near site of future garage. Provide us with a pile of wood chips for gardening. Additional dead tree dropped into woods (see comments below). Extra $250 (orig. est. $1,440 for above + 250 = $1,650)

They came out early and removed several trees (box elder, silver maple and another mulberry) plus, about 15 huge buckthorns on the side of my house and also removed some seedings and other dead shrubbery. The property looks terrific now that all that mess is cleared up. I've recommended Bill to several of my friends because I know that they did a fantastic job for me. So glad that I found him. Thanks to Angie's List.
Description of Work: Bill had removed a huge mulberry tree from my driveway about a month ago and I was so impressed with him and his team that we walked around my property and discussed other things that needed to be done. I called him back to do those remaining items.

They were terrific and when Bill first came out to give me the estimate - we also walked around my yard and he made some other suggestions and gave me estimates for those other projects. So yesterday, they took down the largest of the trees which was causing my driveway to buckle. I will definitely have them again out to do more of the work that he suggested. And a thank you to Angie's List for sending me his name. I was searching for tree removal services and Angie'List sent me a list of other tree removal services and Bill's name was on there - I called him, he came over, gave me an estimate and he did the job. I WAS DELIGHTED WITH THEIR SERVICE - WILL DEFINITELY SCHEDULE TO HAVE THE OTHER WORK DONE.
Description of Work: Bill and his team removed a huge intrusive tree from next to my garage. I was not at home but my friends watched and videotaped the removal. They did a spectacular job and the cleanup was immaculate. There was no mess left at all. The tree was very close to the gas line and we had it marked by the utility company and Bill's team was very careful in the removal.

Description of Work: I called Jennifer on Friday. Bill showed up on Friday afternoon. Saturday , Bill and the men were here and in three hours had done all the work. I know these people. I have used them before. I will use them again. I recommend them highly. Three trees were cut and trimmed. The yard was cleaned of branches. This after the spring rains and winds.

It went very well. They came out and did the estimates on one day, and came back a few days later to do the work. They did a great job. They took away all the debris. There was no collateral damage to property. We had used them before to remove a tree from a tight spot near our pool; they did a great job that time, too, so we had great confidence in using them again.
Description of Work: They took out a tree in the back yard and ground down the stump, and also removed several large bushes from the front. They were very accommodating in arranging to take out a neighbor's tree on the same day and split the trip charge.

Used Top Notch many years ago for tree removal/grinding, and appreciated the expertise of the arborist running the company. Used another time jsut for a consultation on a new planting that was struggling, and got some great advice, for free. So when I had another tree recently split and fall, I decided to hire them again. THE GOOD: very knowledgable, patient, informative, professional. This is a crew that clearly knows what they are doing and understands how your plants and trees can thrive. THE BAD: very expensive relative to other landscaping services in the area, vague communication about job dates/times, seemingly long wait time for job to start. Just earlier in the year, I used another local landscaper and they had 2 workmen do some hard labor in the yard for almost 6 hours each, and they did not charge me much more than half of what Top Notch charged for 40 minutes of work. If they weren't so good at their job, I would question using them again simply because of the high price.

Response from MDiaz Tree Services
We truly appreciate the praise of this customer and it is this high praise that prompts this response to clarify our position in this industry. The challenges this economy has created spawned many to do side work or start companies that offer lower prices, less knowledge, under equipped, unskilled labor that lack the proper insurance required by law. Two guys working out of a pickup truck can not be compared to a long established professional and fully insured company. We do not aspire to be the highest cost nor the lowest cost contractor in our industry. We pride ourselves in offering a fair and honest competitive written proposal for our services. Scheduling the work has always been difficult due to complexity of each location and project especially when trying to accommodate storm related services. Prioritizing services always leaves some one waiting a little longer than they should. As always we appreciate the feed back which helps us strive to improve our services. Sincerely, The staff at Top Notch Services, Inc.

I had a group of 7 trees that needed to be removed. Overall, pretty straightforward job. Overall experience was very good and I would definitely use them again.I live in Hawthorn Woods, where we have specific restrictions on the providers that work in the area. Bill was very knowledgeable about working restrictions, provided direction on getting permit's. He provided clear estimate so we both knew exactly what work was going to be done. He also helped to identify what some of our problems are, and how to resolve them (and no, not through additional work from Top Notch). He was proactive about scheduling, checked on status of permits a couple of times and we got it scheduled. They came out right on time and the work that was done was exactly what I requested. Overall good experience. I think this job was pretty straightforward, but, communication and follow through were excellent. I rated B on cost, primarily because he was not the lowest bid I got for the work. They were not off by much, and the professionalism, clarity of the estimate and his helpfulness lead me to decide to go with Top Notch. I am not sorry and would use them again.

We had several problem trees in our yard, and Bill gave us a clear assessment of the options for all of them. We ended up getting 4 trees removed and the lawn couldn't have looked any cleaner when they were done. They did a great job. I also had two trees I wanted trimmed, a huge lopsided tree in the center of the yard and a second growing over the house. I've never had a tree trimmed professionally before. If I had any clue they were going to look this good I would have followed Bill's advice and done 2 others as well. I thought they were just going to cut some branches and shape it a little, but they look like 2 "brand new" 40 year old trees were just planted in my yard. Great work.

Bill came out and gave us an estimate and was very professional. We also liked that he is not big on chemicals. Once we gave the go-ahead for the work, it took a little while for them to come out, but that is understandable because there were heavy storms and they had to do emergency work around the area. They were done in one day, answered all questions we had, and did a beautiful job. We've had a few other questions since the work ended, and they have been very prompt in returning calls. Overall, we are very pleased with this job.

Bill came out and walked the yard of my new home that was in need of some tree maitenance. Much of the yard was overgrown with buckthorn and hawthorns as well as many of my pines had a disease which has killed them. I wanted to trim some large oaks but was advised by Bill that in order for them to remain healthy, I need to wait to late fall. Bill noticed some low branches that were potentially hazardous and an issue to the roof/gutters and recommended some additional trimming. Bill brought out his foreman, Juan, to walk the yard with me and to mark the trees/shrubs to be trimmed. As we walked the yard, I added some additional trimming to the job - they had no issue with doing so. While doing this walk around, Juan noticed a large branch from a tall hickory that had broken in a recent storm. This branch belonged to a neighbor. While I was fine paying to have the branch removed, Bill wanted to be sure that he received the neighbor's approval to do so. He made several trips to her home to make sure she was comfortable with us cutting off this branch. Once the rains stopped, Bill's team arrived and took out much of the shrubbery and dead trees. They did a very neat job. They were concerned that the wet grass would be come tracked and muddy and asked to come back to complete the job when it was drier so that they would not ruin our grass. All in all, they did a terrific job - the yard looked great and they did a complete stump grinding readying the areas for planting. They cleaned all branches and leaves. This is a great team of people to work with and I highly recommend Bill and his team for any tree trimming needs.

Thank you for your "A" rating it is greatly appreciated. Just want to clarify that Bill (the owner) IS a certified arborist. He diagnosed the trees in question and referred the business to another company that uses chemical applications and also has an arborist on staff. Our company has intentionally chose not to use chemicals to treat trees and plants. Thank you for letting us clarify that information.

Top Notch Tree Service is excellent overall - the quote they provided was exactly the cost of the job. The crew arrived on time and completed the work in one day. The crew was responsible for removal of two large trees in the backyard, one of which was hanging over my residence. Normally I would try to cut down the trees myself, but the proximity to the house had me scared! The crew started by stripping the tree furthest from the house of its branches, leaving only the trunk and two high branches remaining. They then used the remainder of the tree as a cantilever for balancing removed limbs from the tree closest to the house. Very professional and kept parts of the tree from striking the roof. Cleanup was very good as well, the crew stacked the firewood pieces at the edge of the yard, and grinded all smaller branches. Top Notch wasnt the cheapest, but they were very competitive and did excellent work. I reccommend them.
Description of Work: Removal of two large trees in backyard, one was hanging over residence. Mulching of branches and limbs less than 6" in diameter. Larger pieces were to be cut down, sectioned, and left for firewood.

Top Notch was just that "Top Notch." They were professional from the initial estimate through to completion of the job. They arrived at the time they said and worked hard. The entire crew was dressed in uniforms that gave a professional appearance. They used their safety equipment and efficiently went about their work. They had employees who worked on the ground to move branches and clean the area. They moved flower pots and lights that could have been damaged and when they were through, they put everything back where each item had been before they started. Truly a professioinally job. We give them an A+ . The only glitch was the fact that it was written into our contract that we required 48 hours notice prior to arrival. We received 15 hours notice.

We had extensive storm damage to a number of trees. Bill & his team cut-up and removed 1 large fallen tree, removed numerous damaged limbs, trimmed broken limbs on numerous trees, and removed 2 dead or diseased trees. I should also not that the largest fallen tree was in danger of causing further damage to our property by the way it was balanced --- and he took special care when removing it to prevent damage. Bill was friendly, thorough, and prompt. I was very pleased with the experience. When I later called to request a more itemized invoice for insurance purposes, he immeditely drew one up and even hand delivered it to my door a few hours later!

I have already recommended them to some friends who also then utilized their services for the exact same thing - mulch delivered. Their price beat everyone else 10 fold - they were polite/responsive and delivered as stated. Everywhere else we had called quoted appx $22 to $23 a yard not including delivery. The mulch looks just fine as well. While they were out we had them quote us on trimming an oak come fall as well. Very pleased with Jennifer (phones and the sister) and Jim, brother and the owner.

Had major storm damage to 2 huge oaks and one elm. He also worked on other dead trees on the property. His was one of several bids for the work. The two highest bids were from services with certified arborists and full insurance. Bill was an arborist and this was important to us, since it was not a clear case of whether the trees could be saved. Bill was patient, as we had him come out again to bid on removal instead of just cleaning up the storm damage. He also waited until we were able to settle with our insurance company. Once the contract was signed, the work was accomplished in our desired timeframe.
Description of Work: Removed 1 huge oak, 1 large elm, 2 medium elms. Trimmed major storm damage on another huge oak tree and trimmed damage areas on an adjacent oak. This was a big job that took 2 days. The oak that was removed had had a huge section break off and spiked into the ground and rested against another tree. Care had to be taken to remove the section that had broken off to avoid further damage to the fence. All wood from removed trees was cut to wood stove length and stacked in a corner of the yard ($150). Two stumps were ground, but he only charged for one. One of the elms was tricky as it was near a new flower bed and the utility lines. Crew was efficient. Area was cleaned up and wood chips left in prescribed area. Bill was not the lowest bid, but we had used him before and was very satisfied with his work. He also was the only service that was honest enough to tell us that some of our dead trees might be taken care of by the city as they were on the parkway. He was correct. You get what you pay for. Just after the storm, tree guys were showing up before the rain had stopped. Some of the bids were very cheap, but when you pressed them for insurance papers, all they could come up with were excuses. I would definitely use him again.
