The vendor showed up promptly and was very personable. Because of the weather the external inspection of the chimney was not performed; it was agreed that it could be done later. Upon visually inspecting the fireplace he thought there was an issue with the chimney being cracked and thought we had an insurance claim and could possibly get our ENTIRE fireplace replaced. Another appointment was made so that he could bring additional equipment for another inspection at the same time that the insurance carrier engineer would be there. Long story short, the engineer said there was nothing structurally wrong with our fireplace requiring an entirely new fireplace. Our fireplace was never cleaned or exterior chimney inspected and the fireplace wood guaranteed as part of the promotion never delivered. I called Lindeman several times called the Lindeman office several times requesting a refund they told me that I would need to contact ANGIE'S LIST for a refund because that's who I paid money to. To date NO clean fireplace, NO firewood as promised in the promotion, and NO refund
Description of Work: Money was paid but Services were not performed, however that was not one of the options to select when reviewing this vendor. We needed are fireplace and chimney cleaned and inspected (interior and exterior). We responded to a promotion for free firewood as advertised on WGN. We previously used this vendor and were very happy with their service. It should be noted that we had another vendor come to inspect a fireplace within the previous year but we did not trust their assessment so we called Lindemann.

I don't really know what the going rate is for liners. Yes I would. I thought is was very professional. The communication was excellent. They really showed me what they were doing, and why I needed the repairs that I did. As far as scheduling the work, they were very good about doing at my convenience, and as soon as possible.

Nick was very polite and professional. He fixed the chimney crown and gave me the estimate to install a chimney liner. He called ahead of time so I knew exactly when to expect him.

I had some issues with an older fireplace that was preventing me from using it. I received four competitive quotes and decided to choose Lindemann. Bryan Smith was my technician and he really spent a ton of time explaining to me the work detail and the differences in how Lindemann works vs. other companies. I felt confident and the work was completed and performed per the contract and will use they again!
Description of Work: I had a fireplace that contained two flue's that were not properly sealed thus potentially creating a fire hazard. They replaced all of my chimney caps and installed a new damper.

I made a Big Deal purchase with them. They were great. They were right on time. They were very thorough. He climbed on my neighbor's roof to be able to access my roof. He went out of his way to make sure he could get on top of the roof because he could not get on mine by just going on my house, so they did a good job. He was nice. He was friendly and respectful. Nothing stood out to me. They just seemed thorough. He seemed like an expert in this field. He didn't take very long, but it seemed like he did everything that was asked of him. Their responsiveness, their professionalism, and their knowledge in their field made me grade them an A. This was my first time using them.

This is a classic example of how poor management and lack of communication can screw up a job. I've used Lindemann and JB Brickworks before, so I understood their reputation and I was aware of their quirks. We were told that this job would take 1.5 weeks. As of mid-October, we are working through issues associated with the invoices (so the lack of communication is STILL a problem). I thought the job was straightforward: 1) Replace the existing fireplace with an insert, including relocating the gas key, and replacing the dated facade (proposals #1 and #2) 2) Install an appliance flue to secure the performance of the chimney (proposal #3) To make things easy, we supplied a picture of the setup we were after and asked what they could do to "make it like that". We worked through the options and we nailed down the project so that we used off-the-shelf and easy-to-get stuff as much as possible. The only "special" item was the marble, which we pre-ordered, so we were good there. We work through the calendar: Rain and availability of various teams meant we needed to shuffle the start date. No problem. Deposits paid. We moved and stacked furniture and cleared paths for the workers. All set for a July 18th start. "Team One" came and spent the first day ripping out the old fireplace and rebricking in preparation of the install of the insert. When they left, they said for us to expect the "gas guy" to come the next day and reroute the gas-line so that we could remove the unsightly and inconveniently located gas valve from the middle of our family room. Later I notice concrete "leftovers" in my landscaping in very conspicuous locations in my yard (like in the middle of my backyard grass). I got concerned that this is a "lawnmower story" waiting to happen, so I cleaned it up. Hey, there's more over there in the flower garden... No big deal, but it left an indelible mental mark... Day two. No "gas guy". No phone call. Nobody. Day three. Nothing. Day four, five and six. The same. I called the rep that I was working with and left messages for her on her personal number: "Hey, this is Eric, just wondering schedules and such. Trying to plan when I need to be home, trying to understand calendars..." etc. Nothing. No returned calls. Zero. Then I calling the office: "Sorry, she's not available right now, Can I take a message?" I leave messages, which go unreturned. During week two, I get a notice from someone that "Team Two" will be out. We're past the targeted finish date, but they come! These are the appliance flue guys, so they work the day under the crawl space and in and around the chimney. They are supposed to finish up the preparation so that the install of the insert and the mantel and stonework can take place. Man, we are excited now! The gas key port in the middle of the floor is a steady reminder that the gas guy hasn't come... More days pass with nobody showing up, with more phone calls and emails made. I'm told people are on "vacation" and "parts are not ready" and "weather issues". It would be nice to sit on furniture rather than stare at it all piled up... In week three, I get information that the mantel will be installed, with the rest of the insert hardware soon to follow. At this point, I'll take any form of progress. Fast forward to mid-August: we're through the first month of this project that was supposed to take 1.5 weeks. One of the key installers has left the company, and I am still dancing around multiple teams of workers: Team One arrives one morning to install the stone, but cannot continue because Team Two didn't leave the necessary parts from the insert. It would be unwise to cut the stone and have it wrong (measure twice cut once, got it). I'm thinking that they make phone calls to Team Two to find the parts, etc, but within 30 minutes, *Poof!* Team One leaves. No idea what is going on. No idea what next steps are. No idea what the calendar is. I place more phone calls, send more email messages. I get some replies that include "sorries", but I really have no idea who is managing this project or what the next steps are. At this point, I am starting to notice splashing of concrete residue inside and outside of the house and am wondering if these "small details" will be addressed. My confidence is sinking. I search the internet and am happy to find nothing that indicates that the company has gone out of business or done anything else that might further complicate the schedule. My messages continue to go unanswered. I search for anyone has a "lindemann.com" email address (the JB Brickworks person hadn't every called me back) and send out a short but very pointed message: "Who should I talk to about this project so that I might express my extreme dissatisfaction with the way that it has been handled, learn what efforts are available for properly prioritizing and completing the work, and hear what compensation is available?" Oh ho! Now that I am a "pain-in-the-***" customer, the phone calls and emails start rolling in! Comfy chair people want to stop over, see the progress, explain to me where I misunderstood schedules and what work was to be done, and provide me with a hearty handshake with reassurances. Sigh. More mishaps: The drywall guy was really nice, but he missed a day too (something about car trouble?). A phone call or message would have been nice. The remote sensor on the insert fails. Must be replaced. More time. A panel inside the insert is damaged. 10 more days. Okay, so now it's September 6th. I get the "Hey, the work is done, here is the invoice..." email. They were nice enough to give a nominal discount on the first invoice of this $17K project, but I can't help but notice the following line item: "Cap off gas key". I notice that this is quite different than the line in the original proposal which said "Move gas key to floor adjacent to hearth". I notice also the line in the signed proposal that says "Any alternation will be executed only upon written approval..." I get underneath in the crawlspace and judging by the fact that the cob-webbed-covered gas key is still there, I conclude that it hasn't been touched, let alone relocated (not that I need to confirm this, because I can see it in the middle of my family room floor). Lindemann/JB Brickworks emphatically claims that the team spent hours working on this line (not sure which team). I offer up pictures that say otherwise, and suggest that a $300 discount from this part of the bill is warranted because the work was not done. This gets escalated back up to comfy-chair people and on September 20th, they say they'd like to come out and explain that the job is complete and press their case. I am happy to welcome them, but they have yet to reply (it is mid-October now). I understand the money makes the world go around, so I promptly pay this invoice less the $300 correction. Out of the blue, I get a note from a different person in their organization indicating that the balance on the two remaining invoices are "aging" and that payment was due when the work was completed. I noticed a few things: 1) Well, firstly, they have not sent me any invoices, 2) the amount they indicate that is due does not reflect the deposit I paid, and 3) despite numerous corrections over the past three months, they continue to misspell my name. I send (yet another) note asking for the corrections and I cannot help but feel that this "straightforward" 1.5 week project shouldn't have consumed my summer (or theirs for that matter). So, after all of this, I am left to consider the fine work that Lindemann/JB Brickworks did. Yes, the people that did the actual work were pretty good, and yes, it looks nice, but at a high cost of loss of trust, considerable stress, and a memory of aggravation that will live on for years (sort of like a root canal: yes, good to have it done, but you'll avoid it if you can). I feel bad that I had to manage their work and I do have concerns that later on down the road, should something happen that requires service, I will be without adequate support. I feel bad because I wasn't a jerk at all about this project. I gave them every opportunity to turn the corner, communicate, explain, or do something on their own to make me a happy customer, or at least pretend I matter, but no where in the chain did they step up. The sweet kiss of the invoicing confusion will be cherry on top. I hate writing reviews like this, but they dropped several balls, and people should know about it. I can't help but think that a couple of appropriately timed phone calls might have impacted the "Responsiveness", "Punctuality" and "Professionalism" ratings dramatically. Whatever. You may end up going with them, but just be aware of what you are getting yourselves into. Good luck.

Workers were on time and work was done in the time frame estimated. Although the work, by its nature, was messy, Lindemann did an excellent job containing and cleaning up the mess. So glad we went with Lindemann and look forward to an excellent relationship over the coming years.
