I would say I think their prices are very high in regards to the work that they do. Their services are alright, but I dont think they are worth the price that we pay. They are very professional. They are responsive to any problems that we do have. I think their quality of work is fine, but we are going to be looking for more affordable services in the future so I am not sure if we will call on them again.
Description of Work: We have them come out annually. They clean out our drain pipes for preventative measures for our 6 unit condominium building. The price reflects the annual fee.

We have used John for 15 plus years now and he is punctual and will call me when he is on his way. If he happens to run late, he will also call. Since he does plumbing and heating, we have called on him many times. One time they had a problem with their 24 hour service and couldn't come out immediately but came the next morning. He took responsibility for it, apologized and didn't charge us for the repair.
Description of Work: John did the routine cleaning and servicing of my furnace. I don't recall what the price was but I do know it isn't an exorbitant price.

The Cahill rep spent about 45 minutes using a power auger trying to clear the drain. He reported after 30 minutes that he thought there was no way to get the clog. The fitting used at a T joint that didn't feed the auger in the right direction, so it was going up toward the exhaust (air) instead of down the pipes toward the water. I asked him to try for another 15 minutes to no avail. I was charged $233 for what appeared to be a half-hearted effort.
Description of Work: Cahill was called in to clear a clog in the bathroom sink drain. The work was not completed. That is, the drain was clogged at the end of visit.

Last fall we made an emergency call to Cahill to check on the boiler, which was making a lot of noise and discharging fumes. Cahill sent out a technician quickly who determined that the boiler was cracked and needed to be replaced. Before replacing the boiler, Ed at Cahill assessed the heating requirements of the building and inspected all the units to determine the correct size boiler to be installed rather than replacing it with the same size unit. Because he took a short time to do the assessment, we were able to purchase a smaller unit and save us money not only on the unit, but also on future heating costs. Cahill also installed new controls and charged us the pricing from an outdated estimate even though the cost for the controls had increased. Replacement of the boiler and controls was not planned, and Cahill worked as quickly as possible to remove the old boiler, and attain and install the new boiler. We were very happy with the work performed by Cahill.
Description of Work: Replacement of boiler for 7 unit condominium and installation of wireless controls to better balance the heating of the building.

Cahill did not service my flood control system. After my basement flooded (8/07), I spoke with many professionals and another plumber (I found an honest one!) who determined the sump pump had no power going to it. Funny, without coming out, Cahill told me it was the pump. If Cahill told me that 4 months prior, my basement wouldn't have flooded! I hired an electrician to fix the problem. I will never hire Cahill again and my friend has not either.
Description of Work: I purchased my first house in 4/07. The house needed a new hot water line and hot water heater and my flood control system serviced. I hired Cahill based on a friend's recommendation. As a first time home buyer and a single female, I knew nothing about plumbing. John Jr. seemed trustworthy and because my friend recommended him, I hired him. Without getting other bids, even though my gut was telling me it was way to high. I wasn't at my new house when they came. The job took around 2 days. On the second day, the plumber told me to get a new kitchen faucet (flow was horrible) and he would install it. I went to the house and notice he didn't re-pipe to my kitchen, I called Cahill and changed it when the new faucet was installed. To my surprise, I received a new bill with $150 for faucet installation. They never told me they were going to charge me and how much. I called Cahill and he took it off the bill. He made $3000 with just a new 50 gallon hot water heater and a new hot water line.

Generally, the work was fine. I like the new plumbing. Technician was late arriving. Charged me what seemed like too much, but I wrote a check anyway. After he left, I refigured the bill based on what was quoted to me. I was right. I was overcharged. Contacted the company a day later. They agreed with me. What bothers me, though, is that Cahill expects payment very quickly, but it took them TWO MONTHS to get around to issuing me a refund check.

I selected Cahill based on their reasonable estimate and ability to schedule installation within 4 days. The installation technician showed up at 7 A.M both mornings he was scheduled and was friendly and courteous. He removed the old condenser and all installation debris. He also called me at work to let me know when the job was complete so I could return home and lock up.
Description of Work: Installation of new central air conditioning unit (condenser and coil). Cahill was one of three companies I had give me estimates on a new Central AC. David Charles came out on the appointed day and time to give an estimate. After inspecting my existing compressor unit (which was beyond repair and badly situated) and looking over my furnace, David performed a complete load calculation, discussed my concerns for positioning the unit and recommended two units that would work well for me. Along the way, he also tested the airflow from my vents and noted that the painters had put many of my vent grates back in upside down (preventing maximum cooling). He also noticed a duct to my living room had been turned off near the furnace and corrected that problem. He noted that insufficient cooling on the second floor may be due to a need for better attic insulation and an attic exhaust fan.

I thought that some service calls where good, others terrible. One guy walked slowly everywhere, kept changing his mind whether we needed a new toilet on all MY time and money. It was clear! They are expensive and I am sure very good bur would not hire someone who is not ethical. Maybe it was one bad apple plumber.

Cahill sent 2 plumbers to fix - they were clean, professional, had suggestions to prevent the problem in the future, and although their hourly rate seemed high, they appeared to work very efficiently and not waste any time. I have had heating and a/c work done by Cahill in the past and was extremely satisfied - I have decided to use them now for any future plumbing work (though I hope I never need more plumbing work). Also, they arrived on time - this to me is a BIG plus!
Description of Work: We had a frozen pipe in our basement bathroom. They had to remove a small portion of the wall to gain access to the pipe, and then replace the portion of the copper pipe which was broken.

Despite the fact that I'd described the problem in detail and the supervisor knew that they needed to bring the smoke machine to identify the source of the smell, they didn't bring it because there had been a scheduling problem and it went to a different job. So basically, their time, and more importantly, mine was wasted and the problem not addressed at all. They installed two of the three shower heads and left me a message saying I needed a new arm to match one of the shower head fixtures, but that was an aesthetic comment on their part not a functional one. They could have attached it, but left without doing so and now I have to get someone else back to fix it. Finally, after sending me to a distributor to get a part for a broken faucet, which we ultimately had to order from Dornbracht, they quoted me twice the price that the manufacturer told me to expect. They're expensive, and the quality and service don't live up to the price. I won't use them again.

We called Cahill to install a bathroom faucet after another handyman tried to install it and couldn't get it to work. The first contractor installed the faucet and there was little water pressure. The problem seemed to be with the faucet. They took it out, I brought it back to the store. The folks at the store claimed the faucet was good and that the first contractor hadn't cleaned out the water lines and the cartridges were full of sediment. The store repalced the cartidges. The first contractor said they wouldn't spend any more time on this faucet. Well, it wasn't an inexpensive faucet, so rather than buy a new faucet, I looked for a new plumber. We have called Cahill before to complete work when other folks couldn't get the job done. Cahill sent a guy out the next day, he finished the job quickly, and professionally. The faucet works great. Cahill is not inexpensive, but they're good.

We have called them now five times to try to get spring-loaded self-cancelling faucets installed but in five months they have never even set a date to come out to make an on-site assessment. Each time we call Cahill's our phone call gets transferred to the plumbing department, and each time we have the same discussion; we describe our problem, and the solution we want, and they respond by suggesting electronic faucets which are MUCH more expensive than what we want. It now appears that their only business is HIGH PROFIT installations, and running water EMERGENCIES. They have told us that the two faucets we are interested in would cost less than $50.00 each, plus installation/labor. We have accepted those terms and have called four different times in five months to set a date, yet all they do is try to sell us something much more expensive and say they will call back later. We think they intend to stall until we finally tire of waiting and agree to the more expensive work!
Description of Work: We live in Evanston, where this business is located, and we had two plumbing problems, but to this date they have only solved one of them! We called six months ago to have a small leak repaired in the bathroom. An individual came out about the leak, found the problem, fixed it, we paid by check and he was gone in twenty minutes. Given that experience and their Angie's List rating we drove to the Cahill showroom to discuss a bigger challenge. My mother is 87, and growing deaf, and sometimes leaves a faucet running, and due to her limited hearing, doesn't always realize the water is still running. We have had sinks overflow occasionally as a result, so I went to Cahill to ask them to install faucets that are "spring loaded" and self-canceling like you find in gas station restrooms, that shut themselves off as soon as you let go of the knob. Instead they tried to sell us faucets that electronically turn on and off as you place your hands under the spout, at a much higher price!

I believe they were punctual. However, the experience was poor because the water still tastes bad on the first floor (which includes the kitchen). It took well over a month for the water to approach being potable. Every time I called, I was told a different story about when the taste would go away (I called to ask about it approximately five times). I was told also that Flux, the material used to solder the pipes together, was completely safe. It is not. They have shown me to be untrustworthy.

Starting in September plumbers from this company began with expensive rebuilding of master bathroom toilets on the third floor - nothing to do with the ejector pump, etc. There were visits by various plumbers, from this company, none helped. Not until May could I get anyone to open the pump and look in. This was a man they sent out to rod the sewer. I did not want rodding, as another company had rodded me out in early September. The pump was never emptied to determine if water was coming in from a hole or another source. They went with the rodders diagnosis. Did nothing to help me with the rush of water into the ejector pump every 40 minutes. After 10 months of dealing with a great deal of plumbers from Cahill, clean up and daily concern. I have to pay them $1,086 for nothing more than a $42.13 quieter check value. The water continues to rush into the ejector and out the sewer every 40 min. The battery will eventually wear out and my finished basement will continue to flood.
Description of Work: I have a finished basement with a sump pump and ejector pump. The ejector pump, for nine years ran only when water was run in the basement. In September there was a rush of water into the ejector pump every 40 minutes without water having been run in the house, this would be followed by a loud bang from the check valve. They gave me a very difficult time when I talked with their company representative. I did not feel I should have to pay over $1,000 for a problem they never attempted to resolve by locating the problem at the ejector pump. They made a lot of money off of $95 trips, labor charges that did nothing and rebuilding toilets that never have had anything to do with the ejector pump. This was a very poorly coordinated work job and then they just walked away with no resolution. It was impossible to keep up with the assortment of workers and things they did not related to my ejector pump. I began documenting each visit as it was apparent there was no coordination.
