When we bought the house the stairs leading to the basement were covered with dark brown outdoor carpeting, making it difficult to see the stairs. We removed the carpeting and found the stairs were covered with old, ugly linoleum. I sent a sample of the lino to a lab and it did not contain any asbestos. My husband and I tried prying the old lino off, but were only partially successful. Glenn and his assistant, Santos, came prepared to remove the lino and sand the wood, but we realized that the time would be better put to use by replacing the stairs with new wood. The plaster above the stairs would be painted with gloss white. Glenn wrapped the original posts with oak. I showed a photo to Glenn that gave him an idea of how I wanted the vertical wood on the sides of the stairs and a banister. The stringers were left in place, the treads and risers removed, then replaced with new oak. I picked out the stain and the stairs were finished with satin polyurethane. I bought the covers for the treads, which eliminated anyone slipping. They also protected the wood finish and gave a comfortable stepping surface.
Description of Work: Removal of treads and risers on old basement steps. Replace with new wood, finish wood, paint walls and add banister.

Everything went smoothly, no problems or delays, and I knew exactly what to expect. The door frame was adjusted and straightened: first, he removed the trim inside and shimmed the gap. There was more to it, but I can't tell you exactly. The main door now fits the opening perfectly and it looks great. The door lock openings were worked on and made to perform perfectly as well. The trim was replaced and joint compound was applied to small areas that needed it. All I have to do is do a light cover with white paint, which is very easy, and it will look brand new. I talked to Glenn about past water leaks in areas of the house from the roof and over a window and the possible causes ... if any problems come up in the future, he can investigate and repair. He does more than just carpentry, which is nice to know, and he is very reasonably priced. We also discussed replacing floor trim, which we need badly. He told me my best options and gave me a very fair estimate of time and price. I will definitely call him again to come out and do more work. The kitchen drawer is great; no more fighting with it! It's the little things that count. The job was done well and we never have to think about it again or explain to someone how to open and close the drawer. The stairway banister / railing looks and feels SO much better than the old piece of crap that had been there. I've hated it for 11 years, but other projects took precedence. Now I can slide my hand down a nice piece of smooth wood. Everything was left clean and neat and there was no need whatsoever for me to tidy up after he left. If I had not used up the 4 hours of labor purchased on Angie's List, he would credit the time towards another job that we talked about (which would take a day's work)...his estimate included time AND materials and was really reasonable. He was looking for more things to do when he started working, because he was calculating the time needed for each repair and thought there might be time left over. I am very happy with the work and craftsmanship that Glenn and his son did...and it is terrific to have these issues finally taken care of! Everything went exactly as I had hoped and even though Glenn stayed an extra half hour, he did not charge more for the time. Everything worked out extremely well and I feel he is an honest, fair and trustworthy person. I highly recommend him! Thank you, Glenn!
Description of Work: I bought 2 deals on Angie's List for this provider: one each for 2 hours of carpentry work for $55; total spent $110 for 4 hours of labor. There was only $35 added for materials on the day of service. Glenn called ahead of time, arrived promptly with his son and looked at the work to be done, as we had talked about on the phone previously. He wrote out a work order and left room for additional tasks, if time allowed. He worked efficiently and told me exactly what he was going to do. First, the front door was uneven, with a gap in the frame at the top. Also, the door did not lock properly because the frame would swell with moisture at times and the 2 locks were misaligned. I was happy to find out the entire frame did not have to be torn out, but that it was a fairly simple fix with shims and retooling the openings for the locks. The work on the door was begun first and then he went to buy materials for the other repairs. He told me what my options were for materials and for other repairs I needed around the house. Everything was clear and concise. After a quick trip for a wood banister, brackets and a drawer runner, he returned to complete repairs. A kitchen drawer had never opened and closed properly, causing no end of problems, and he got that fixed quickly. Then, while one person worked on installing a new banister, the other worked on finishing the door.

Thanks for the report and looking forward to more work in the future.
The main reason I hired Glenn was to replace baseboards in my finished basement and to repair the surrounding drywall due to flooding. Although the work took a few separate visits to complete due to both of our schedules, Glenn provided a fair estimate on all the work he did and I was very happy with the end result on all projects. While Glenn was completing this work on the basement, I also asked him to also help me with odd tasks like hanging towel bars and a mirror in the bathroom, repairing a leaky kitchen sink and installing a new kitchen sink. He also fixed the slider on a door to my boiler unit and glued all the wooden levers back into place that had fallen out due to the way the door was hanging previously. I would definitely recommend Glenn Stevens to my friends and would hire him again.
Description of Work: Cut and size baseboard for the basement and inside closets, sand where needed, replace dry wall and patch. Remove doors and rehang the doors. Repair leaky hose, install new dryer vent, fixed the levers on a closet door, ix a leaky sink, install a kitchen sink, remove broken light bulbs stuck inside bathroom fixtures.

After I purchased the Big Deal, I emailed Glenn about the work I wanted done and included photos. The main job was to insert fencing on my patio over some existing iron railing, mainly for the purpose of preventing rodents from getting onto my patio. I emailed several photos of my patio, and I also emailed photos of patios of other owners in the complex to show how they had solved the same issue on their patios. The photos showed that the inserted fencing was attached to the iron rail, between the existing brick walls. He scheduled to come look at the job on March 30 between 9 and 9:30. He called about 9:30 to say that he couldn't do the work that day, but I reminded him he was supposed to come only to look at the job. So he came, at about 11, to look at the job, and we scheduled the work for April 26 at 9. Glenn seemed like a nice man who was trying to get all his jobs scheduled to please his clients. On April 25, I was concerned about the predicted rain the next day, but Glenn assured me it would not rain. However, that morning rain was predicted, and Glenn did not come at 9, but called me sometime after 9. After speaking twice, we decided he would come to hang the artwork, since I had already set aside the time to be home. They finally got to my house at about 11, and completed the work in about 30 minutes. Because of all the problems with rain, Glenn suggested that he could paint the lumber for my fence in his garage and let it dry before bringing it to my house to install. I agreed and gave him the paint and primer, and we booked the fence job for May 1. On May 1 Glenn and his son came at 8:45 and got to work. When he put the lumber down on my patio, I noticed several places on the wood where the paint had come off--as though the boards had been stacked together while they were still wet--and asked him to be sure to touch up the spots before he installed the fence to the iron rails. He did not get all of them before he put up the fence, and it was not possible to do a good touch-up job after the installation, including painting over the nails, which remained quite visible and were not aligned in a neat row. Also, he had only painted the exterior side of the fence. He painted the interior of the new fence after it was installed. After Glenn was gone, I noticed that he did not remove the sawdust after he cut the lumber on my patio, but painted right over it, which looked really bad. I also noticed that he got a lot of brown paint on my brick wall and my brick home on both sides of both sections of fence that he installed. The only painting that was done in a workmanlike manner was the flower boxes, which were already painted and only needed a fresh coat. Once he had finished cutting the lumber, I saw that he had attached the first part of the fence to my brick wall rather than to the iron railing as I had expected and as I had shown in the photos. I objected, but he said he had told me he was going to attach it to the brick. I said that I had not understood he was going to do it this way. He said he didn't know any other way to do it, and he had already attached the lumber to my brick wall with a nail gun. I am not knowledgable about construction techniques, and so I let him go ahead. I had already paid for the Big Deal, and felt I had no other choice at that point. He proceeded to install the wood over the two places where there was railing. He also installed the lumber to block the gap to my neighbor's patio, and caulked around the access holes for the cable. The brown caulk did not match the brown wood, but I thought the color would be right after the paint was dry, but it wasn't. The whole thing looked unsightly, but it served the purposed of blocking the gap. Since then (less than 2 months later), the wood has shrunk (contractors said the lumber was too new and so pliable that it bends), and the paint has pulled off the boards as they shrunk away from each other. This has left white spots where there used to be brown paint, which are apparent because the gaps between the boards have increased. The caulk is also disintegrating, with unsightly holes forming. Also, the fence was installed so tight at the bottom that it blocked most of the drainage on my patio. If there is any dirt or debris, my patio completely floods like a pool when it rains, and water has seeped through my patio doors into my living room. There is no way to clean the debris between the fence and the iron gate, which I mentioned when I objected and which would not be the case if he had installed the fence to the gate as I wanted in the first place. I have had to hire another contractor to address the drainage issue. It is not sufficient to merely trim the bottom of the fence, because that does not address the debris between the fence and the iron. He said the best way to maintain drainage is to attach the wood to the iron rails. I told him Glenn didn't know how to do this, but this contractor knew exactly how to do it. So I am redoing almost the entire job. It would have been helpful if Glenn had known how to install the fence as I showed him in the photos of my neighbor's patio. I expect a good contractor to have the expertise to make helpful suggestions where I am not aware of various construction techniques. The new contractor also advised that plastic would not expand and contract with the weather, and would look exactly like the wood. This also would have been helpful advice for Glenn to have offered. Glenn is a nice man, and I am sorry to give him a negative report, but my money for the patio project was wasted. RESPONSE TO PROVIDER'S RESPONSE, on June 21, 2011: When I signed the invoice, I did not see all the paint on my bricks, or I would have said something at the time. However, at that time I could not have foreseen how the lumber would shrink and the paint would come off in less than two months; and I could not have foreseen how the caulk would begin to pull apart the way it did. I did not know that my patio would flood when it rained. I had to do something about the flooding on the patio, and wanted to have the fence attached directly to the iron rails so that the debris would not build up between the fence and the iron rails. Glenn had said he did not see how he would attach the fence to the iron rails, and he said the only thing he thought of would not look good from the outside. So I did not see the point in calling Glenn to come back for that work. Also, by that time, I had seen the sloppy paint and caulk job, and I did not want any more work to be done by the contractor. No one touched the caulk job after Glenn left, and the photo shows just the way he left it, including the caulk on my cable wire. I also sent Glenn photos of the brick wall before he did any work, and they show that there was no paint, tar, or debris on it as he claims. Also, I have learned that it is common knowledge in the trade that it is not appropriate to use a nail gun on brick, because it causes bricks to shatter, and that is in fact what the nail gun did to my bricks, as shown in the photos. I have had a new fence installed, with a 3/4 inch gap on the bottom, which allows for drainage and still keeps out rodents. I have other photos in addition to those included here showing that the work was not completed in a workmanlike manner. I think it would be fair to refund a portion of the amount I paid for the fence project.
Description of Work: Glenn and a helper hung some framed artwork in my stairway. The three of us spent 30 minutes on this job. Glenn measured and handed the art work to me, and I handed it to his helper on the ladder, and he hung it. This work was completed to my satisfaction. The main job was to insert a fence on my patio in two areas where there was an iron fence and to block a gap in another spot. Glenn purchased the lumber, nails, and caulk. I supplied all the paint and primer. He charged me for other "paint materials" but I don't know what they were. He primed and painted one side of the lumber offsite and brought it to my home on the day he performed the work. He constructed the fence and attached it to my existing brick wall, and he blocked the gap with the wood. He had to cut access holes through the wood for my hose and for my cable, and he caulked around the holes he cut. He painted the interior of the fence brown after he installed it, but did not remove the sawdust from the lumber before painting it. He put a fresh coat of paint over my existing flower boxes on the interior.

The company will offer $90 to resolve this and the check can be sent immediately. How come this customer looked at the job after completion, and signed the customer satisfied with work signature line?, if these false accusations are true. How come the customer did not contact the company about these false accusations, and ask the company to fix it ? The customer states that the wood was put to close to the ground, but this was done at the customers request to keep rodents out of her patio area. The customer was also told not to touch the cable lines or the caulk for 6 hours and obviously someone either touched the cable wires or the caulk, because we do not leave jobs like that, and we have many customers that will verify this and pictures that show other caulk jobs that were done. It does look like we missed a strip of paint on the wood where we primed the wood before the job started, my apologies. Again, how come we were not called and informed of this? We would of been happy to come out and fix this. There was existing paint, tar, and other debris on the brick before the job was even started. All the wood was wiped before painting was done. The customer was shown the color of the caulk, the caulk job, and the entire job, before paying and before signing the customer satisfied with work signature. This is called slander and/or defamation of character, and action will be taken against any and all parties that do such things from now on. Glenn Stevens-Owner/Project Manager

Used a Big deal coupon for 4 hours of work. Glenn and helper did a good job installing the bathroom door, and installing an access panel for a water valve in the basement drywall. Did all work in just under 4 hours, and cleaned up all areas very nicely before leaving. Would definitely use in the future. The Big Deal coupon worked as planned, offering a good price to for me to try a new contractor, and good for Glenn because he won a new customer in the process. Only issue was his work van was leaking motor oil, and he parked in my relatively new concrete driveway, leaving an oil spot about 6 inches in diameter. Other than that, all was well.

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! BUYER BEWARE! I spoke on the phone several times to the owner, Glenn Stevens and confirmed that 4 hours ($110.00 the amount of time I secured through the "special deal" on Angie's List) would be more than enough time to do this work. It was agreed that I would pay for the wire mesh to be purchased at Home Depot ($8.00 per sheet of metal wire...at the most it should have taken 2 sheets). I was suspicious as soon as Glenn arrived (20 minutes late) at my home, when I saw him record on his work sheet that he arrived at 9am. AT NO TIME DID THE SCOPE OF THE JOB AND THE AGREEMENT WE DISCUSS CHANGE BEFORE GLENN BEGAN THIS WORK. His worker (an elderly man) and he worked at a snail's pace as I watched them in my yard perform this work. At the end of the four hours, Glenn presented me with a bill for an additional $240 for the work performed!!!!!! That would have been a total of $350 for a job that we agreed would cost $110 plus material. He claimed I owed him because he brought a worker with him to do the work!!! Was this discussed and agreed to by me before they began the work?? Of course not!! He also told me the material charges for the wire mesh and nails from Home Depot came to $67 ALTHOUGH HE COULD NOT PRODUCE A HOME DEPOT RECEIPT FOR ME EVEN THOUGH HE BOUGHT THE ITEMS THIS SAME MORNING! I was outraged and was very vocal in my displeasure so he agreed to a "discount" for an additional $200. He was paid, but not before I wrote on his work order that the work performed WAS NOT authorized at this price. DO NOT HIRE THIS MAN! I'm very upset and will probably not use Angie's List again due to this costly experience.

The customer was told before the work started and before the customer signed the start work signature line, that there was going to be 2 men on the job. The customer was also told that in order to get the work done in 4 hours that another man was needed. We had to dig a trench along 120 feet of fence and cut and attach wire mesh, with bushes, plants and rocks in 35 degree, rainy, damp conditions, and the job was done within the 4 hours. The customer obviously was trying to take advantage of us, by screaming and trying to get work for free, and that's not going to happen. Because of the screaming and the husband trying to calm the woman down, the customer was offered a bigger discount, then she paid.

Job went well. It was an Angie's List promotional item for a handyman and it all went as originally scheduled, making it as painless as possible to have such repairs done.
Description of Work: Drywall repair of an area that had to be opened to access heating pipes. Provider replaced drywall in opened area, taped and finished area ready for primer and paint. He was timely, as scheduled, and did the job requested.
I called Glenn and told him the type of work i needed. He asked that i send him a e-mail with my information and he would give me call the next day. I e-mailed him my information and pictures, and he called me the next day with a immediate appointment date. He was on time and very professional. I was very satisfied with the quality of his work and how well he cleaned the area after he finished.
Description of Work: I had four wood decorative bannister railings that were attached to the ceiling. I wanted them removed and the ceiling repaired. These four railings were also attached to a wood base located on top of a four foot section of dry wall. I wanted to preserve the wood base after the railings were removed. Glenn removed the railings, repaired the ceiling and sanded the wood base.

Glenn was in my home remodeling my bathroom, when I mentioned that I would like to have quarter round installed in the bedroom. We'd had the oak floor refinished and never had a chance to replace the quarter round. Electrical work was done by him. He also took out a long piece of wood that was separating the laundry area from the furnace and workshop area in the basement. He recognized it as a trip hazard and asked if he could take it out.
Description of Work: Glenn Stevens and his assistant installed a new switch for the basement light and new quad outlets in our home office. New quarter-round was put in our bedroom and both the baseboards and shoe were painted. Price includes materials.
As this was a complete gut, Glenn was very helpful in making decisions about the items that needed to be replaced. I bought the vanity, medicine cabinet and fixtures online. He brought in a new fiberglass tub, insulation, ventilation fan, and paint and grout color samples. At his suggestion I chose the vanity counter top, wall and floor tile from a local store, which he then picked up. When the walls were taken down, we discovered a hole in the stack, which was repaired. Glenn brought in teams of plumbers and electricians to complete parts of the job. New walls were primed and painted, including new baseboards and shoe. At the beginning of the project, brown paper was laid in a path from the bathroom to the back, to avoid dirt on the floor. His assistant was conscientious about vacuuming after each work day. This was a difficult job since the walls and floor of our 1926 bathroom were lined with concrete that had to be removed. Since this was our only bathroom, the toilet was reseated at the end of each work day and plastic sheeting placed on the shower walls, so we could use the bathroom in the evening.
Description of Work: Complete bathroom remodel, including removal of cast iron tub, ceramic tile, two layers of floor tile, lighting, vanity, medicine cabinet, electrical outlets, fixtures and plumbing.

A disaster! Glenn is a nice guy, but he did sloppy, overpriced work.
Response from GLENN STEVENS; HOME REPAIRS & REMODELING SERVICES
I don't know why member said such a thing, all the prices were given to the customer before any work was done. All the work was completed to the customers satisfaction according to the customers signature, on the work order, before paying for the service. The work was done in September of 2010, and the customer stated at the time of completion, how nice the work was done. The work consisted of installing a new screen door and removing the old one, installing a custom made threshold, removing curtain rods and installing new hardware and curtain rods, in 10-12 windows, some being picture windows and/or sliding doors, custom installation of double bi-fold doors that didn't fit the opening, and were actually 6 inches off the hardwood floor, that is what made the closet doors and the front entry foyer to a house, look like a disaster. Member sent me to buy new ones that would fit correctly, and when I returned to the house that's when member specifically said he wanted the doors that didn't fit installed.

Once I made my initial call to Glenn, he came to my home within a couple of days (we had some bad weather and couldn't keep our first appointment). I showed him what I wanted done and I received a quote the next day and thought the price was fair. I told Glenn I wanted the work done ASAP, I had a new garage built and they had removed the back gate. I have two large dogs and was concerned about them getting out. Glenn was going to start the job that Saturday, but there were some questions he had upon arrival, and I was not home and I did not have my phone,he couldn't get clarification, so the start of the job was delayed by a day. Not to his fault. He started on Sunday, and was going to finish up the following Wednesday. He couldn't make it that Wednesday, so he came on Thursday and finished the job. The one day delay did not bother me, I doubt there were many contractors that would have been willing to do the job so quickly. I came home from work on Thursday and the job was complete. He did a great job, the 6 feet of fence matches the fence that was already there, and the gate looks great and is very sturdy. I made it clear I wanted the back gate to be very strong because of my large dogs. Sometimes there are kids in the alley trying to tease them and I want to make sure if they jump on the gate it would hold up. He and his worker were very polite, and they cleaned up everything. I am very pleased with this experience and will certainly call Glenn if/when I need additional work to be done. It is very apparent he takes pride in doing things the right way.
Description of Work: I needed an existing 6 foot tall fence extended about 5-6 feet, approximately 2 feet of fenc built to close the space between my and my neighbors garage, and have a back gate in stalled, which ended up being 2 feet wide fence and then the gate.

After the technician took apart the switch he did not know how to put it back together. He had to contact his electrician to figure out how to finish up the project. It ended up being a three and a half hour ordeal.
Description of Work: We hired him to replaced a switch in the kitchen.

Response from GLENN STEVENS; HOME REPAIRS & REMODELING SERVICES
To the member and all potential customers, This report is not true or accurate. The member called and scheduled an appointment for the kitchen sink to be re-caulked. When I arrived she had a switch and a GFI outlet and asked if I could replace them also. I specifically told the customer that I would do it, but I usally send an electrician to do this type of work. The sink was done and when I changed the outlet and switch, it worked for a moment and then it stopped working. I was concerned since the job was electrical, so I called my electrician and he came to the job within 30 min., and explained to the member that the wiring was not the normal type of wire that electricians use, and that was why the electric wasn't working. The electrician had it resolved within 15 min. and the job was done. The customer was only charged for the kitchen sink re-caulking. Therefore the report isn't true or accurate, because Glenn Stevens; Home Repairs & Remodeling Services was hired to re-caulk a kitchen sink and the report says differently.

Glenn was very responsive in scheduling the work and appropriately estimating the cost based on my over the phone description. (His estimate of cost and time needed was much better than another larger 'A' rated handyman company I contacted first.) The interiors of the closets had large sections of surface drywall damage and base boards missing due to old wood closet systems being removed (they were glued in). Glenn and his guy arrived right on time and completed the work very well, including finding, installing and painting the same base board in sections. They were very careful in controlling the dust from sanding and cleaned up after themselves, including wiping down wood floors as they left. Will definitely use again.
Description of Work: Glenn repaired damaged drywall and installed sections of base boards that were missing inside 2 closets, including painting the interiors of the closets and base boards to match the existing.

We had been thinking of replacing the fencing for a long time. People used our property as shortcuts because the gates so easy to open. Dogs wandered into our yard because of the gap between my neighbors fence and mine between our garages. We found Glenn on Angie's List and looked at his web site. I emailed him and received a call to set up an appointment to discuss the job.
Description of Work: Glenn and his assistant removed 2 chain link gates and the fencing between garages. They were replaced with 5' black aluminum gates and fencing. Gates were installed gates with locks. The old concrete that supported the chain link was dug out and carried away. Glenn and his assistant worked very hard to make sure that the fence was properlly installed and sturdy. They were always polite and ready to explain what they were doing.

They did everything I asked them to do and did it well. They were very punctual and polite. They wore foot covering and that was really nice and they were very professional. It was just a pleasant experience dealing with them. I know that the price was fair and I remember calling a lot of places and they were giving me outrageous quotes. As soon as Glenn came in to do the plumbing and then was doing they drywall and it was all reasonable.
