Anthony and his crew were right on time to insulate my attic. They first put down drop cloths on all my floors that they were going to be walking on to track all the dust and debris. They also went above and beyond to remove all old wood that was left in attic from previous tenants. They sealed all air flow into the house (drafts) and started to blow in insulation. They said they were going to use 40 bags of insulation but used 45 instead. They gave us an extra 2-3 inches more than what he quoted me for for that extra comfort in my home.
Description of Work: We had purchased a Energy Inspection for $99 and $350 in free Attic Insulation. The estimated cost was $2750 but after all the rebates from Energy Impact Illinois Air Sealing, Utility Insulation Rebate, and the $350 free insulation our bill was only $650. When we had the house inspected, Anthony told us we had R-3 in the house. He recommended 14 inches of blown in insulation. Anthony and his crew were right on time for the inspection and the final insulation day - not a minute late. They worked on sealing all of my lights, air spaces from the main floor to the attic and cleaned out all of the old wood that was left in the attic. Anthony and his crew didn't leave a mess, they left the attic spotless! This was very pleasing to me considering many home repair companies I have dealt with in the past have always left a mess for me to clean up. They also put down drop cloths on all of my floors to catch the dust and debris from their shoes and attic. I would highly recommend Building Energy Experts to anyone. I was so pleased with their professionalism and work, they are coming back to spray the basement with insulation!!

I received a quote but didn't hire and went elsewhere for the project due to the company not being able to provide a solution I could live with; Their solution didn't appear to address my real issue which was a very cold room over a garage that needed to be warmed up with insulation; instead there solution may have helped warm up the 2nd floor attic space and East side of the second floor, It wouldn't help with the west side of the house where the room is located that needs insulation. Additionally, since the cold air comes from the 1st floor attic space (located below the room in question) and not from the 2nd floor near the east end of the room, it would most likely not help and instead adding insulation may warm up the rest of the 2nd floor which didn't have the problem, they couldn't assure me that the room over the garage would have been warmed up if they performed the work estimated.
Description of Work: Did not hire this company but the estimate was provided early this year.

All of our work is 100% guaranteed. The solutions we offered take the EPA method of the whole home approach. This will increase the comfort and energy efficiency of the entire home not just one room. The home works as a system. The issue was sealing off air infiltration. Not just insulation. The homeowner did not want to compromise on any storage space in the areas that required repair.

In November I had purchased a coupon from Angie's List for Building Energy Experts (BEE) for an energy audit and credit towards the purchase of cellulose insulation. On December 14th, 2012, Anthony and an assistant from BEE came to my home to perform the energy audit. He explained everything in great detail and took the time to answer all of my questions. He walked me around the house to show me where I was losing heat (and air conditioning in the summer) through the windows, doors and can lights. They also performed the forced air blower door test to determine how many times the furnace cycles on and off. After the energy audit was complete, Anthony explained the details of the energy rebate being offered by the state of Illinois through ComEd and North Shore Gas. I received the completed proposal in a very timely manner and it detailed all of the work to be down and the costs were broken down into each section and the rebate and coupon I had previosly purchased were also included. On the day of the installation Anthony and his team arrived shortly after the insuation delivery and they all got right to work. Anthony went over the list of items to be completed as well as the paperwork for the rebates. Everyone was very nice and friendly. I did have a conference call for work in the morning and they cheerfully accomodated me by making sure they were as quiet as they could be. When the work was completed they cleaned up everything so well you never would have known they were there. Anthony then showed me the crawl space and what a huge difference the spray foam insulation and the vaport barrier made! Before my crawl space was very dark and just had gravel for a floor. With the vapor barrier and spray foam insulation it is now white, bright and very clean looking. Anthony showed me the photos he took of the attic as the work progressed throughout the day. They blew in 14 inches of cellulose insulation, sealed the can lights located in the upstairs bedrooms, built the insulated box for the attic access door and made some other repairs to the duct work. They also spray foamed in the garage on the bottom of the drywall that has the lower level living room on the other side. I am quite happy with Anthony and his team at Buidling Energy Experts. I am planning on using his services again later this spring to seal the windows and doors.
Description of Work: Installation of blown in cellulose insulation in the attic, Installation of spray foam insulation and vapor barrier in the crawl space, The details of the work completed is outlined below: Insulate Attic Use cellulose insulation to increase the effective R value of the home to R 49 in accessible attic sections of the home. - Apply blower door guided air sealing measures. Air seal all accessible penetrations and accessible duct returns /supply to create a better air seal above condoned space below. - Prep area for insulation. - Insulate the attic to R 49 with cellulose insulation approximately 14 inches deep. - Build an insulated box for the attic access to R 10 with two, 2 inch polystyrene insulation boards and weather strip lid and air seal. Insulate Crawl Space Walls and Sill Plate - Use 2 part open cell foam to insulate the crawl space foundation walls, Rim and Sill Plate 3.5 inches to R 13 Install Vapor Barrier on Crawl Space Floor - Install 6MM Duracraft vapor barrier on crawl space floor fastened to foundation wall all seams sealed.

probably will NOT use this company again
Description of Work: i bought a angies list deal for this company 99.oo dollars for an energy assessment including 350 dollars to use for insulation. my wife was there for the assessment, he did the blower test and walked thru the house with a machine to pinpoint the cold spots entering the house etc which he told my wife as they went around the house and he took many pictures. at the end of the energy assessment he said he would email a detailed assessment including pictures as well as an estimate for correcting any insulation issues in 2-3 days. received an email 7-10 days later, but all that was included were 2 estimates for different ways to insulate and they were not complete and difficult to understand. i contacted anthony... he was very pleasant but said the energy assessment was just verbal, so i don't understand why he took all the pictures. don't think i will use this company for the insulation project. price seems very steep considering how many rebates he included in the estimate. and there are astericks which say that if the rebates end up not covering this particular project then he would bill me later.....

All of our assessments take 7 to 10 business days to review. Sometimes there are several ways to look at a project. We do not provide pictures unless specifically requested. This is why we go to each room with the client and show each area during the assessment The State of IL requires specific information that the client must provide for the $1,750.00 rebate that can only be provided by the homeowner. We offered to come back out to the home to walk through our findings but never heard back. Unfortunately there is no magic bullet to make a home more energy efficient. I think this is were this frustration comes from.

I was able to communicate with Anthony via email which is always convenient. He worked around our busy schedule for timing. We had a late afternoon appointment and he was running a little late due to traffic between my house and his previous appt, but he called ahead of time to let me know this and I appreicated that courtesy. He performed the energy audit just as described in the "Big Deal" description that I purchased. He was very thorough and did a good job explaining what we were seeing on the camera, as well as what the pressure readings on the blower meant. He was very candid, and it was evident he wasn't just trying to sell us stuff. He provided a written report a week later as promised, and I didn't feel the cost of his recommended fixes were outrageous. We intend to have him come back in and address some of our problem areas.
Description of Work: Energy audit of my home using a blower system and infrared camera. Then a written report of recommended fixes.

They were on time, even though I was not. I was held up at work, but they were able to go through the house with my brother. I appreciate their professionalism considering i was not able to speak with them myself. Anthony took extra time to email me and speak on the phone about items that we couldn't cover in person. The report came a few weeks later and while it did not contain thermal pictures, it did have a written analysis of all my home's heating issues. This was not a cut and paste one size fits all report, they actually took time to describe all the issues specific to my home. They also addressed additional concerns I had mentioned, and offered to apply the $350 attic insulation towards any project. The proposal for the attic was about $2k, which is very reasonable considering the work involved getting under the floorboards(although demolition was not included). I'd like to add that their professionalism is top notch. Unlike many contractors I did not feel like they were selling me for additional work. All they did was analyze the heat loss and find ways to save me money. They also were very informative about rebates and cost savers to help me make my decision. I followed up about additional services, such as thermal radiant heating, windows, etc. Every question I asked, they had a thorough educational response for. I will be having them out next week to discuss remodeling the first floor. The experience and knowledge they've shown has given me a strong sense of confidence in my remodeling project, and the heating costs they propose to save me are phenomenal. I look forward to writing another review if we are able to move forward on the next project, which they suggest will pay for itself within 5 years.
Description of Work: I bought the angie's List Energy Inspection with $350 credit towards Attic insulation. It took a few weeks to get scheduled due to the high volume of customers purchasing the project. Anthony Stonis provided me with a thorough analysis of my home's abundant heat loss, and suggested several cost saving insulation jobs.

Anthony reached out to me to schedule the energy audit. I was familiar with energy audits and rebates from State of IL through utility companies. Anthony and his partner walked me through the blower door process and used the infrared system to show me where our house was losing energy. He indicated that in order to qualify for the rebates we needed to show a 30% improvement in our home. After the energy audit, Anthony sent us a proposal for insulation of our attic, sun room and other deficient areas. The quote seems reasonable and we are working to finalize the type of insulation and ceiling fan. One area for improvement is to provide an explanation of the green options for insulation. Overall great experience and we would recommend Anthony and his team for the energy audit and insulation services.

We are quite pleased. Though they were late the first day (due to inclement weather and difficult driving), they worked efficiently and completed that day's work by 3 p.m. Due to the very cold weather the first day, they returned on a warmer day (by previous arrangment) to complete spraying foam on the sun porch underdeck and soffiting the air duct. Anthony took pictures and videos of most of the work to verify the work, since I was away for part of the project. They were generally careful about protecting the inside of the house. Under the sun porch they left a few items outside that had been stored there (including some firewood), but it was easy to return these to their former locations. One cold floor in the house (by the front door) they were candid in telling us that given the age and construction of the house, correcting that problem would likely not be worth the effort and cost. So far the house seems less drafty and generally warmer, but obviously time will tell. We would be happy to have them do work for us in the future.
Description of Work: Purchased an energy audit special ($99) through Angie's List in December. Anthony contacted us by email right by right away to schedule. They arrived promptly and conducted a thorough audit of our 130-year-old house. Walked me around with the infrared camera while the exhaust fan was drawing in air to demonstrate leakage in the house, explaining trouble spots and suggesting their likely plan. Within a week we received a detailed proposal, beginning with the most cost-efficient steps first. Responded quickly to several questions for clarification, and we finally decided to schedule the entire $5100 proposal, after Angie's discount for insulation. The weather made travel difficult the day they arrived so he was a bit late, but he brought 4 men with him, reviewed the project with them and began work. They prepared our under-insulated attic by covering electrical junction boxes, damming the opening to the attic to prevent spillage, and then blew 40 bags of insulation to reach a 14" level (they had anticipated 30-35 bags, but did not charge us any more). They also sealed several windows and leakages and insulated a door in the basement, caulked windows outside. Finally, they sprayed foamed the underdeck of a sunroom, and then covered the foam with wood. They foamed an air duct and built a soffit to insulate that room more effectively.

Anthony performed an energy audit and made several improvements to our house to make it more energy efficient. Specifically, he and his team did quite a bit of highly-tailored insulation in my attics, as well as sealing our doors and french door casings. Anthony was cost conscious and performed the highest impact work for our budget. Additionally, he sent his crew back (at no additional charge) to make some more subtle improvements once cold weather hit and we could better determine where any air leakage remained. Due to his work, my home will receive a silver energy star rating which should add to the value of my home. I will certainly use Anthony again as needed.

This was a big deal from three years ago. We did in fact email and call the client but never received a response. Two months after the deal expired we finally received a call. We informed the client we would honor the big deal even though it was expired. We were then never provided any dates of availability. We have since informed them that Angieslist would offer a full refund since we never redeemed the offer. We also offered a discounted price to do the audit as well as a $350.00 credit for towards improvements and have still not received response. Clearly there is a communication breakdown. Work was completed in one day when Tony and two others workers arrived promptly at 8:00 am. Because Tony's company was authorized to do certain work which qualified for a energy conservation rebate, my initial cost went from $2560.00 to $810.00. They did a great job and were very thorough, considering that my house was 135 yrs. old and had many issues, since it was never insulated. I would certainly use this company again and would reccommend them to others.
Description of Work: Tony came out initially and provided a home inspection which included infrared camera and blower test. Within a few days sent me a written quote regarding the scope of work necessary. The scope of work included insulating the attic and weatherproofing doors throughout the house.

The project went very well. Mickey did an excellent job of inspecting the attic, discussing options, and then sending us a very professional quote. On the day of the job: the crew showed up on time, made sure that they understood what was to be done, and got right to work. The job went very well. The crew removed old insulation that was blocking air flow from some of the eaves and then made sure there was proper air flow from the eaves. They also vented my two bathroom vents through the roof and insulated the ducting. After all the prep work was done, they blew in over 40 bags of insulation. When the job was finished, they did a great job of cleaning up the site and making sure I was happy with the job. The crew was friendly and very professional. I highly recommend Building Energy Experts.

Tony and his guy came in and did a thorough assessment of my house which I know has issues. Overall I was pleased to find out the problems were not as bad as I thought. The problem areas they identified were not earth shattering and were obvious. Many home construction contractors will only do just enough to pass inspection when it comes to insulating a house. These guys came out and pointed out areas I knew had problems, eased my mind on things that I thought were issues and suggested some simple fixes that I could even do myself. Overall they were very professional, on time and communicated their findings in a language anyone could understand. Best part was they used a FLIR (Forward Looking Infrared) camera to show where the problems were rather than just pointing them out. Only issue we had was a slip of a foot through the ceiling. I hesitate mentioning that here but I wanted to actually point this out as a positive. Accidents happen. Its how you handle yourself following that accident that matters. They put a hole in my ceiling, but I am happy to say they had their drywall guy out in a few hours after it happening and have already followed up several times to schedule painting. Tony knocked it out of the park in his handing of this mishap but also with his honesty. I commend them for that. I am planning on using them to remediate my energy problems when time/cost permits.
Description of Work: They came in to do an energy assessment. Overall their knowledge on the subject was spot on and they had the necessary tools to conduct the job properly rather than making an educated guess.

Two men came out in Dec. and examined our home. They set up the fan and performed the test taking photos with infrared camera. Within a few days I received a report with photos and a recommendation as to what work would provide the most energy savings. They were professional and quick and were on time and were very informative. I purchased their service through an Angie's list special.

Overall the work was performed quickly and professionally. They vacuumed the area afterward and it was cleaner than when it started. The work was done well and per the contract. The price and experience overall was very good. Ultimately - only time will tell if the corrections made to the house will have its desired effects. Here are my only complaints: 1. Communication was hit and miss. Ultimately I was able to talk to Mickey - but sometimes days would go by without hearing an update on when they could come out to perform the work. The weather was miserable in April and delayed work for about a week. When they did show up it was without a phone call first. I happened to be awake and home - but 15 minutes notice would have been nice. 2. Mickey had verbally agreed to replace the ducting of my dryer with rigid ducting instead of the springy foil that I currently have. He also said he would wrap the ducts leading from the bathroom exhaust vents. This was not done. To be fair - it was not on the contract - but still disappointing. It was not reflected in the grade since it wasn't officially their job. The complaints are nit-picky for me - but for you - they might be a big deal so I included it. They accept credit cards so that helped get the job done before the hot summer months.
Description of Work: We had an energy audit that was covered in a separate report. As a result of the audit - we were given a proposal to remedy the problems that were making rooms too hot or cold, stuffy, musty etc. Below is a listing of the contract and a comment on each: 1. Perform a blower door depressurization test prior to commencing work. Re-verify ventilation requirements for home based on blower data (this data was collected during audit of the home on 3.23.11) COMMENT: This was not done due to the fact it was done so recently. Many clients postpone the work for months or years. Since it was only a month - no "re-verification" was needed. 2. Remove siding on second story gable end of home over bedroom where snow blew into the attic during winter storm. Repair sheeting and install house wrap. Re-install original vinyl siding where removed. COMMENT: This had been a problem since the house was constructed in 1994. They ran out of materials near in the attic and never completed the sheeting or wrap - they just sided over an empty space hear the peak of the roof. The crew repaired it from the inside of the attic and added Tyvek on the outside by pulling the top siding layers off and wrapping it from the outside using tuck tape. Needless to say, the hole is no longer there and the house is properly protected. 3. Apply and install air sealing measures between attic, garage and exterior and living spaces of the house using spray foam, caulk and ridged foam board. 4. Apply caulking to all leaking windows. 5. Build a dam around the perimeter of the attic access door. This will allow for the full depth of insulation around the perimeter of the opening. Add rigid insulation and weather stripping to the door to make weather-tight.. COMMENT: Done per contract 6. Install 6" of cellulose insulation in the attic. COMMENT: See images 7. Perform second blower door test to verify air seal measure. COMMENT: I did not see this performed. I heard them use duct tape near the front door and assumed that it was to attach the blower device but I was otherwise occupied. It was not necessary for my satisfaction but it was listed on the contract so I assume it was done. 8. Install a new 6" supply duct in to the basement room containing the sump pit. New supply to drop through the ceiling. Install white register. COMMENTS: Completed and he sealed the sump pit as well to prevent the musty odor from entering the room

They were prompt, meticulous and took the time to explain what they were doing and the results of the tests. The final results were emailed to me and they came out and walked through the results and recommendations. A lot of assumptions I had made were not only wrong, but would have been expensive and unproductive if I had made the changes. The recommended repairs were offered at a competitive price.
Description of Work: I had 2 rooms in the upstairs and 1 room in the basement with air flow issues. Too hot, too cold, musty. They came in and performed pressure tests, airflow tests, etc.

They did exactly what they said they were going to do. I received an email with the results of the audit promptly. However, their prices for work they suggested based on the audit seemed a bit high, so I decided not to work with them in the future.
Description of Work: Building Energy Experts performed an energy audit.

They were very good. Two gentlemen went through every room in my house, and were very professional. They were very informative and answered all of my questions thoroughly. They also provided me with copies of their audit reports. Building Energy Experts is a good company, and their prices are comparable to others.
Description of Work: They performed a thermography energy audit.
