Response from Mr. Handyman Metro East
Feedback helps make us a better company. We embrace it and look for comments that help us improve our communication and service. But, we were a bit confused when reading through Member's comments. The only time this year we'd been to the home was January 26, not 11th. The total for the trip was $138, not $80. And, we'd done work for Member's mother, not Member. And, at the time we did the work, we were following another service provider who had made errors (heating and cooling specialist). We not only did a task we were asked to do but also tried to correct what we could of the specialist's work. Everything seemed fine. There was confusion by Member's mother after we left, though, about what we'd done versus the specialist as she hadn't been there at the time with Member. Even though there was, we thought, clear understanding after we discussed what we'd done during the visit, she might not have remembered correctly and Member is challenged, at times, helping his Mother understand events. (Additionally, the feedback provided here comes 5 months after our visit.) Prior to that visit, there'd been very positive comments from Member's mother as we'd done a lot of work at that home in 2011. And, despite her insistence at times that we use sub-standard materials or do work in a way that would render the results not in keeping with our quality standards (which was challenging to help her understand that was not in her best interests) we were able to find solutions that always seem to make her happy and, in fact, glowing in praise for our technicians. All along the way, with all the comments we received, not once did we hear we had "problems with cleaning up". In fact, quite the opposite was true - she was effusive in her positive comments regarding every facet of our service visits including communication, skills, follow through, etc. Member's mother is a wonderful woman who we found delightful and full of purpose. She has a very unique approach to having work done at her home which does take patience and understanding. She loves being able to re-use worn materials - that most times, unfortunately, no longer have proper integrity and should be discarded. She second guesses herself and changes her mind a lot (definitely her perogative) which can be confusing to others. But, she always seemed to us worth working with as she was so delighted to make progress on her "to do" list as we continued forward. It warmed our hearts. That's why these comments are more than a bit hard to understand given the relationship we'd enjoyed with Member's mother. We're truly wondering if she's confused us with the other service provider who was there as so much of this doesn't jive with reality - including the date of our visit as they proceeded us to the home.

these guys are great because I had just moved and some of my other workmen would look around and say oh that's nothing to fix, but they did not want to get involved with these little jobs. Handyman service will do what ever you want. They may have to go purchase something for the job so it is a good idea to try and have what you need on hand.
Description of Work: This business was prompt and curteous. They do have a trip charge and they charge 80 something an hour. (There are coupons on line) But no matter what was on the list, they are happy to do it. They completed around 6 different small tasks in my home in about an hour and a half The only thing I would reccomend is to oversee some of the tasks as they needed to know exactly how high to install a few items.Over all it was a pleasant experience. I plan on calling them again.

Response from Mr. Handyman Metro East
It's always helpful to get feedback from customers to know where you might need to improve. And, the comments from Member are no exception. He is correct that we gave him one estimate. But, we always say (and most people understand) that if you find out, once you "dig in" to a project, that it includes some issues that were unforeseen, that the estimate might have to be adjusted. And, that was the case with Member's project. Below the surface of the ground in which we started digging, there were huge rocks that were going to have to be removed before continuing. It was obvious it was going to take more time and cost more and we apprised Member of that immediately. We don't want any surprises for our customers. He was not happy with the new assessment and understandably so. (But, we would rather be up front upon discovering an issue and adjust our estimate than to go forward and hand a customer an invoice that was much higher than originally anticipated.) He dismissed us curtly. Yet, we thanked him for having contacted us initially. We would have liked to have gone forward and done the work for him as we have no doubt it would have been a job well done and solved his problem. No work was completed. No invoice was submitted (so there was no "overcharge"). And, we didn't even charge for the initial estimate nor our trip there to start work. We would rather lose money from our efforts than charge someone when we didn't complete a service. Trust is of paramount importance to us - that's why we guarantee our work, why we bond our technicians and why we over-communicate when doing work for our customers. Again, no surprises. We're proud of all the very positive testimonials that we've received, and have on our website, as they more accurately describe how our customers find our services. We feel very blessed to have such a high percentage of repeat customers who refer us to others enthusiastically. In reviewing steps taken with Member, the only thing we could potentially have done, even though the revised assessment seemed clear and we explained the issue in depth, was to ask him if he truly understood what caused us to revise - one time only - that initial estimate. Despite what we thought was a thorough explanation of something very obviously seen, perhaps he was still unclear what an impediment to progress the rocks really were to our being able to stick with the estimate. And, the "he" Member alludes to was one of our many qualified technicians. This is a small company of skilled technicians, not just one man.

The day before, the worker came out to measure and survey the job before starting. He said that he could do the work, no problem, and left. The next morning, he was there, promptly at 8:00 a.m., the agreed upon starting time. I was then presented a form, outlining work cost of $85 per hour plus materials plus $45 travel. I pointed out that I had been given a firm price. Now, I understand that every job is different and that there could be some flexibility in time, but I couldn't get an adjusted (or not to exceed) price from the installer. Could it be up to an hour? 2 hours? 4?, he didn't commit. The problem is, once the door/frame is removed, you've pretty much given them carte blanche on their time, as they can't quit until the door is installed. I didn't want to end up spending $800 or more installing a door. I don't understand why the installer wasn't aware of the price given to us by the company or why, the possible issues, presented to me, the morning of the job, weren't given the day before or during the initial discussion over the phone. We mutually agreed to cancel the service.
Description of Work: I was given a verbal price of $384.00, after a 10 minute discussion of related issues etc, to install our new front door. The new door was 36" wide vs 34" for our existing door. We arranged for a time to have the work done.

Response from Mr. Handyman Metro East
Rarely do we receive negative feedback but it's always helpful to know how customers feel in order for us to go forward and learn from it. Member is correct in that our worker did make 2 trips to her house: initially to measure and discuss the project and then to actually do the work. She had purchased the wrong size door, on sale, and really wanted to be able to use it despite it being 2 inches too small in width. (We've had to handle challenges like that in the past, so this, in and of itself, was not an issue.) We did give her an estimate when she called initially, which the technician was well aware of, but told Member, during his first visit, would be the probable charge if there weren't any issues that became apparent once he started the work. He then told her what he could potentially encounter once he started removing the current door. The form the technician presented to Member the next morning, when he came to do the job, was a blank invoice. We always ask permission to start work (after there's a proper discussion about what needs to be done) and, in so doing, have the customer sign their approval on our blank invoice. The charge was to be $85 per hour plus $42.50 trip charge (not $45) as was clearly stated on the form. And, we always estimate our work - we are a time and materials business. We do not offer "firm" prices as that doesn't benefit us or the customer. We only charge for the time we're working. (Oftentimes we come in lower than our estimate and that's all the customer pays. There's no reason they should pay a "firm" price that ends up being too high.) Our technician didn't commit (Member is correct) to any "firm" time period as, so often when we put in doors, there's no obvious evidence whether or not the frame is still in good shape until we start the job. And, this was a situation where we were going to have to make significant adjustments to the door frame given it was 2 inches smaller than her new door. (We've often found wood rot in older homes.) He wanted her to fully understand the situation before he started work but also reiterated that, barring any issues, the original estimate was good. The possible challenges were all discussed on the first visit - the night before the work was to be done. And, when we discuss projects on the phone when customers first call, we always make sure to tell them "it's an estimate" and that, in situations like these (replacing a door), we have encountered wood rot in the past that required a bit more time (generally not much) to address properly. On slogan includes a phrase we truly believe in: Done Right. That's why we guarantee our work and comport ourselves as we do - with pride, honesty, proper communication and respect. Member said she was going to find another door - one that was the proper size - and have her husband install it. That sounded like a good solution and one that potentially wouldn't present as many challenges as trying to install one 2 inches too small for the frame.

Mr. Handyman came to my house at 9 a.m. to provide me an estimate. I was off of work that day and asked if he could do the job that afternoon. After consultation with scheduler he agreed to do it that afternoon. I went to Home Depot and purchased the door I wanted and the boards and flashing for my deck. Mr. Handyman was available at 2 pm that same day. I was glad I had them replaced the door because my house has settled quite a bit since it was built so some more extensive modifications had to be done to my door opening than what I would have been capable of doing myself. There was also some water seeping betwen my deck and the outside wall of the home that was going into my basement. Mr. Handyman used flashing, 1x4 pressure treated wood and caulking to prevent any further seepage. It was a fantasic job performed by a high quality worker for a very fair price.
Description of Work: Installed a new swinging exterior door in my basement. Flashed a portion of my deck against the house.
