Jan was very responsive and helpful in figuring out how to make things work. Due to the way my kitchen island was constructed there is not enough room to easily install the kind of pull-out sprayer faucet I wanted. I found one that I like and thought would work, but wasn't sure. I sent Jan the photos and spoke with him on the phone and he was helpful in walking me through whether it would work or not. He couldn't know for sure until he actually saw it in person, but I got a quote. He was very responsive, punctual and professional. He was able to install the faucet and make it work, even the pull out sprayer (not perfectly, but that's the fault of how the lsland was built). Another company said I would have to change the vent pipes to get any pull out sprayer to work right, but when I asked Jan if moving them would help, he explained that it would help with the sprayer, but would not be good because if would cause problems with the draining and venting of the sinks (dual sink). Even though he could have gotten a lot more money for moving the vent pipes, he recommended against it. I don't mind paying up for people who know what they're doing and are going to tell me the truth, even if it means less money for them now (but more in the future because they have my loyalty). I got three quotes for the job and none of them were cheap. Jan's cost was in the middle, but I felt more comfortable with him because he took the time to understand the situation on the phone, even before I agreed to have him do the work. I rated him an "A" on price, not because it was cheap, but because I felt he provided a lot of value and I didn't feel ripped off at all. He couldn't install the soap dispenser (due to the configuration of the pipes) and discounted his price for that on the spot. Jan and Vanguard will definitely be my first choice if I need plumbing help again.

The plumber was very prompt and polite. When I called them, they were able to make an appointment for the next day. He called a half hour before the appointment to confirm/let me know he was on the way. When he arrived, he fixed the problem within two hours, and tested to make sure it was fixed. He was also very nice about our cats, who of course got in the way as much as possible.

These guys were great. I was in a very tight spot and needed services done immediately. They took care of me better than I could ever hoped. 2 guys stayed late on a Friday working in the rain just to complete the job. I highly recommend them for any service.

Jan was very professional. I was impressed that he asked me to email him pictures in advance of faucet, toilet and heater so he could evaluate issue, give me an accurate estimate and if quote was accepted he would make sure he had all the necessary parts and tools needed for the job. He rebuilt a leaky toilet (the toilet was under mfg warranty and they sent me replacement parts) fixed a leaking water faucet by replacing a mixing value. Lastly he cleaned and flushed our water heater. His quote and the final price were the same. Now that's a pro! Jan was thorough, fast and I especially liked how he cleaned as he went and did not leave any mess. He knows plumbing and I will definitely use him again!

Over the past 3 years, I remodeled 2 bathrooms, one included installing a washer and dryer. Jan and his crew did an excellent job.There were a few things that were a little tricky but Jan or his crew figured them out. They always showed up when promised. My building engineer wanted to see the work before they enclosed the walls. He was very happy with the work and he's a tough guy to please. I'm unsure of his cost as he was a subcontractor; his cost was included in my contractor's bill. I would definitely recommend Vanguard.

I called Vanguard on short notice to replace a leaky wax ring in the toilet of our upstairs bathroom that we suspected was responsible for the water spots showing up on our ceiling the floor below it. Vanguard was able to schedule a visit for the next day (less than 24 hours). Jorge arrived on time to provide service. Upon looking under the toilet, he realized there were multiple other issues, including the faulty wax ring. Despite these additional issues, Jorge was able to stay longer to complete the job. The price I was initially quoted for the wax ring was very fair, and so was the final price that covered everything that needed to be done, especially on short notice. Jorge did a great job, and we really appreciated his willingness to get the job done that day. I would use them again and would recommend them to others.

Jan called me back and came out the day I contacted him. He and his associate were on time and did a great job resolving my plumbing issue. They were courteous and I felt very comfortable having them in my home. I would not hesitate to use their services again.

Because he found that the hot water shutoff was leaking so he replaced the hot water valve, the shutoff, and put a new faucet in for me. He's courteous, on time, returns your calls. He tells you right up front how much it's going to cost you. He's been pretty honest for the times that I've used them.

I just had a great experience with Jan and Vanguard. I had a problem with my water heater and Jan quickly diagnosed the issue, then had me send a few photos to confirm. Within about an hour, I then had a professional quote for the job and was able to approve it and get the work started very quickly. Jan showed up exactly on time and worked quickly. His prices were about 50% of what Deljo charges for their labor. (I also had them quote the job). A great small independent business to support.

I got the owner both times I called the main line, without ringing through to voicemail. Jan listened to me, quoted a price over the phone, and was able to send someone that day. George, the plumber, arrived when he said he would, and gave me a courtesy call in advance. He did an excellent job, and, when he noticed that some of my washers were worn, replaced them for no charge. He cleaned up carefully and explained my options for the future. The final cost was exactly what had been quoted, despite the job running a little long.

Jan thought through the issue and determine that he didn't have to knock down drywall. Saved us a lot of money. He is thorough, honest and to the point.

I own a 100+ year old house with a few original cast iron pipes. Over the last few weeks, I have started to observe a leak from the basement. After overcoming the dread of having to address this issue, I called up Vanguard on 12/22/2014. Even though we are very close to the holidays, Jan was able to send someone out to help in the investigation. About 90 minutes and a hole in a wall later, the plumber figured out that the drainage pipe was backed up and that water was subsequently flowing through a venting pipe to another drainage pipe. Unfortunately, the venting pipe had a hole which was the cause of the leak. At this point, we came up with a temporary solution which should provide me with a few more years of service before I embark on re-plumbing the whole house. I appreciated Jan's honesty in not pushing me to invest a large amount of cash to replace pipes which I was not yet ready to replace. Vanguard's quick response, professionalism, reasonable price, and honesty will make me come back to him in the future.

I called several plumbing companies from Angie's list including Vanguard. Jan answered the phone and walked me through what to do to stop the leak while I waited for a plumber. The other companies just took my info down and said that someone would contact me later. Jan said he'd call back about availability and he did call back at the time he promised. He sent out George to the house and after some troubleshooting, was able to find the leak. George was professional and got straight to work after we discussed the pricing. All in all, a good experience that started from the time I called.

Vanguard came in with a low bid, worked with me on a schedule and performed with quality workmanship.

They did a wonderful job. They got all the work done at one time even though there was more work to be done then expected. The guy that came out was very professional and efficient. I would use them again in the future.

Jan and George were both professional, knowledgeable, punctual, and left a clean work area. They came up with a solution for a tub drain that could not be rodded because of it's design. Jan did excellent work on a difficult caulking job. Vanguard has become my plumber for any future work and I would recommend them to anyone I know.

Jan was great, very professional and followed up with me as he said he would. He needed to come out for an inspection first to assess the scope of work and he was quite honest with me. It would be impossible for them to fix everything to the way it should be without starting all over with new plumbing and sewer connections, which would require a vacant building. They would really only be able to do patch work repairs. But after talking to me about our con's association's position as far as liability and correcting specific things we knew were a problem. He worked with us to come up with an appropriate scope of work that met our needs.

I have used Vanguard in the past. Extremely knowledgable and provides quality work. Replaced old corroded galvanized pipe that was out of code with copper. Works beautifully !

They are really good. I have used them twice. I was not there when they did the work. It was a work done at my rental condo. It was all managed by management, so all I did was communicate with them via phone. The work was very satisfactory. They were always available to respond to my questions.

Was done in less than 2 hours. High quality repair job, and excellent clean up. Provided electronic invoicing and billing, which was nice. I recommend and would call Vanguard again.

he original job was going to be just to replace the sink trap, which was heavily corroded to the point of leaking. Upon further inspection, the corroded trap was mearly a symptom of a greater problem. The pipes leading out from the sink were clogged, corroded, and likely original to our 100 year old house. What was supposed to be a simple job, ended up being much more complicated, which involved having to drill into the wall to get at the pipes leading from the sink, but Jan and his assistant stayed late to make sure the job was done and everything was back up and running. They were even very patient with our curious little dog who wanted to try and "help" with the job. Considering the amount of work that was done, I felt the price was very reasonable.

This review is for two visits by Jan. The first was to replace our hot water heater. Our heater began leaking on a Saturday so I called Jan. He had me e-mail him pictures of the leak as well as the connections to the heater. He assessed that we would be okay with our small leak until Monday. In the meantime, we received a detailed estimate for the replacement. I appreciate that we did as much as we could on-line. He arrived at the scheduled time on that Monday and replaced the heater. He explained how it worked and showed me out to turn the pilot on and off if needed. We called him a week later due to a leak in another location in the house. He arrived at the scheduled time and immediately began to assess the situation. The leak was in the wall and he and his co-worker worked hard to diagnose the problem with the least amount of damage to the wall which happened to be between the kitchen and the bathroom. They decided to go in behind the stove where there was accessible dry wall. They took the time to cut the dry wall no bigger than the stove so that it was hidden by the stove which gave me time to get a contractor in to repair it. They also were careful to go in on the other side under the sink and in the cabinet to prevent having to re-tile the bathroom wall. They continued to re-evaluate the problem until they were able to fix it with the least amount of cost and damage to the surrounding area but still within code. I appreciate that they did not just forge ahead with their original assessment once they were able to really get in the wall and see what was happening but rather continued to analyze the situation and try to figure out the best way possible to correct it. I also like that he always explained exactly what he was doing. For both jobs, they did not leave until the job was complete and they cleaned up as they went so there was minimal disruption to the house. His billing is clear and the invoices sent electronically immediately. I am giving him an A for price not because it is cheap but because it is reasonable for the quality of the work received. I would highly recommend Jan. This is our third time we have used his service and I feel he does excellent work.

Vanguard was excellent. I had old plumbing connected to my basement sink that became clogged. They cut out the old pipe, and put in new pipe and a new sink and faucet.

I cannot say enough great things about Jan and Vanguard. Like many Chicagoans last week, I experienced a burst water pipe in my finished basement. Not only did Jan answer his phone promptly, he also helped walk me through how to immediately shut off the main water line to stop the water from rushing onto my floor. He was able to schedule me for the following afternoon, and upon arrival, identified and fixed the problem. He communicated every step of the way, and made me feel as comfortable as I could, given the situation. Because this had never happened to me before, I had also tried reaching out to other plumbers to see if anyone could get out to my place sooner, but Jan was the quickest! In fact, I had another large company, Four Seasons, actually refuse to put my on a waiting list even though I'm an active customer of theirs in other areas. I have used Jan for other plumbing-related projects and I'm so glad that I stuck with him to solve the problem. I will continue to be a loyal Vanguard customer, and would recommend Jan & Vanguard to anyone with any type of plumbing need.
