He inspected the fireplace and the logs, fixed the problems (one part was clogged and needed cleaning and other parts needed rearranging), and only charged us the $85 for the service fee. More importantly, he took the time to explain the log system and remote controls to us, showed us some problems with them that we can work on fixing in the future (chimney is too short for the fireplace), and gave us general tips. He was very knowledgeable and we will definitely use him in the future to get the chimney fixed (he gave us an estimate for that during this first visit also, which was helpful). I would recommend him to anyone looking for someone who is not only a chimney sweep but can also fix gas logs.

They did a very good job. We selected Sols after extensive comparison and pricing using Angies List. When asked about pricing from competitors, Sols offered more competitive pricing. They were very accommodating on the scheduling. They worked very efficiently. They cleanup well after the job. Good overall experience.
Description of Work: Sol's cleaned two chimneys, replaced the liners, rebuilt one of the two and tuckpointed the other, put new caps, and repaired two fireplaces.

We've used Sol's once before and both times have been great. Scheduling was easy and Sol goes out of his way to make sure you are happy. Not only was the fireplace spotless, but he also sealed a crack running along the base of the fireplace insert (at no charge). Couldn't have been better.
Description of Work: We scheduled Sol's to do the annual cleaning of our fireplace.

They did a thoroughly good job, they were excellent. In fact we have told them to put us on their list, once a year. I would use them again in the future, without a doubt.
Description of Work: We have a two story house, and the vents from the washer and dryer go up through the ceiling and out. The washer and dryer are upstairs, so that’s why they had to go through the attic. We needed the vents to be cleaned, and we used Sol’s Chimney Sweep, Inc. to do that job.

Everything was done with attention and care. Furthermore, Sol came out a couple of weeks ago to inspect my personal gas fireplace (the others were for a property I own). When Sol looked at it, he said that it was fine. He wasn't going to charge me for something that didn't need to be done. Sol was very kind and personable, and he clearly has integrity. He also understands the importance of taking good care of his customers. I highly recommend him and his team!
Description of Work: Sol and his guys were great! They replaced a pre-fab fireplace wall and floor, installed heavy duty cast iron fireplace grate and did repairs on the fireplaces. They also inspected and cleaned these 3 fireplaces. Additionally, they tore down a chimney on my roof and sealed the opening, and sealed the openings of 2 dead chimneys with metal plating.

We developed a problem in our fireplace with the damper not closing properly. Initially we contacted a repair service listed in Angie?s List. They came out and inspected the damper for less than a minute and told us that we needed a new damper at significant cost. They claimed that they had realigned the damper and that it would work temporarily, but they would not guarantee how long it would work. Sure enough, the next time we used the fireplace, the damper would not close properly. We then contacted Sol?s Chimney Sweep Inc. Sol came out and spent a good deal of time inspecting the damper. He said that although it might need to be replaced, he wanted to try and clean it up and fix it first. He then spent about 15 min. cleaning the damper, removing a lot of debris from the track of the damper. He also vacuumed the damper. Once he had done all of that, he told us that the damper was working and did not need to be replaced. Sure enough, the damper now works fine. It is apparent that the first company we called had no real interest in trying to fix the damper, but rather wanted to sell us an expensive new damper. Sol, on the other hand was conscientious, diligent and honest and saved us a lot of money by actually repairing the old damper. I was tremendously impressed by Sol?s conscientious, diligent and courteous approach and would recommend him most highly.
Description of Work: Sol fixed a damper that wouild not close properly and performed additional services incluing installing a new cap on t the chimney and resealing the chimney crown that was deteriorating.

They arrived on time, and the price was good. The only issue was that the company offered a warranty on the gas logs, but it would not provide the appropriate paperwork.
Description of Work: They removed a wood-burning stove and repaired the fireplace. They also installed a new dampener in the chimney as well as gas logs. Furthermore, we discovered a gas leak, which they had not caused, and they returned to fix it which proved to be quite difficult.

We were moving out of our home, and the buyers' inspector flagged some items in our fireplace that apparently needed to be repaired. Sol and his colleagues were friendly, honest, fast and thorough—they repaired the items that needed it, showed me the items that didn't need repair and explained why they didn't need repair in easy to understand terms. (The inspector had flagged a couple of items that were built that way for a specific reason and were not defective). I was able to give proof of repair and the additional information on to our buyers without any problems.

The work was completed on time. However, we had a number of concerns regarding the lack of professionalism, and failure to follow common sense practices to keep our house clean. First, the quality of work was unsatisfactory in some areas. The black paint in the firebox got over-sprayed onto the decorative stone surrounding the fireplace. In addition, we continue to find a significant amount of black debris falling down the supposedly cleaned smoke chamber (and we haven?t used the fireplace since the work was completed). This was disappointing since falling black particles from the smoke chamber was one of the reasons we wanted to do this work in the first place. We also expected the flashing to be flush with the chimney, but we can feel debris sealed inside the flashing and are not sure that it was cleaned and flashed properly. Second, we were sold work that was unnecessary. Upon inspection during the first visit, Sol insisted that we should replace the appliance flue liner because it is a sectional liner that is too big. We originally did not want to replace this liner because another service provider who assessed the appliance flue said that it is not a pressing issue. However, we agreed to proceed because during the second visit, Greg ? the co-owner ? pressed that if we don?t replace the sectional liner, it will leak at the seams, damage the new chimney from the inside, and that we will need to be replace the chimney within a year. When the appliance liner was pulled out during the project, it was evident that it was not a sectional liner, and therefore didn?t need to be replaced for the reason Greg stated. After approaching Sol about this, he offered to refund partial credit on the work, which we accepted since the work was already done. We believe that this work could have been avoided if a more thorough inspection was done. In the end this mistake costs us over $800 that could?ve been avoided. Our biggest concern was the mess caused during the project and the group?s refusal to take responsibility of the cleanup cost. They caused a mess much worse than they led us to expect, and then failed to take responsibility as they led us to believe. Cleanliness is very important to us, and we asked multiple times if the job would make a mess, and how we need to prepare our home for it. We were assured that they will use a powerful vacuum, that there would be no mess, and that they would leave place cleaner than when it started. On the first day, they only put down drop cloth in front of the fireplace, and turned on the vacuum at the fireplace intermittently. At the end of the day, there was a layer of fine black dust ? like soot ? in the living room, dining room, and kitchen. There were also chunks of debris, due to removal of the liner, scattered along the path from the mechanical room in the basement to the doorway. In addition, Greg, the co-owner and foreman, walked into our light-colored carpeted basement with his shoes on, and without putting booties on. He had to be reminded by another worker to take his shoes off. The other worker took his shoes off, but tracked debris onto the carpet from the dirty mechanical room. That night, we had to spend hours vacuuming the carpet and mopping the floors to get off all the black dust and construction debris. All these were very troubling, and we wanted to prevent the issue from worsening. On the morning of the second day, we called the crew to make sure that they bring enough drop cloths. In the morning we requested a talk with Sol at the beginning of the second day, and he came by the house. Sol strongly emphasized to a worker that everyone should remove their shoes, put drop cloths down wherever they would need to walk regardless of if it is carpet or hardwood. He also said that the windows should have been closed to keep any outside dust from coming in ? which we did at that point, and would have done so the day before had his team advised us to. We told Sol that we wanted to have our couches cleaned, and general cleaning in the dusty area. He said to do what we need to do, submit the bill to him and he will pay for it. Later that day, Sol arranged for a cleaner to do dusting and vacuuming around the work area during the construction. We appreciated the gesture. Unfortunately, when she was folding the drop clothes as her last step, she shook it to straighten it up, which launched a huge cloud of soot into the living room and dining room. This was the tipping point of our dissatisfaction ? we paid the crew for the project to end the frustration of having the group on site. We also found an empty water bottle, which we offered to the crew, as well as cigarette butts on our lawn and driveway. Later on we described to Sol over the phone our frustration, and invited him to come inspect the outcome. We said that we will have to get our couches and living room / dining room professionally cleaned. More than once, Sol said to do whatever would ?make you happy?, and reassured that he would pay for the bills. Since then, we mailed Sol the bills (about $300) and never received a reimbursement. Sol also stopped answering our phone calls.
Description of Work: We were getting water leaks into our fireplace when it rains. Sol and Greg came to inspect and here are the services performed. I Solomon Sher am sorry but I will not pay any more money. It seems that everything I do, she will not be happy. She told me the house was dusty but she cleaned it before I could inspect it. But I took it upon myself to make her happy and took $200 off the bill and discounts on everything and had a cleaning service out to make sure that everything was perfect. And when everything was done the husband signs and approves that everything was good and paid us.

What a thorough job! I suppose my expectation was a basic cleaning of the glass and a vacuuming of the fireplace (after all, this is all that was done by another service provider years ago). So much more was done by Sol's! Each log was removed and individually cleaned. The wall panels in the fireplace were removed and individually cleaned. The burner was adjusted. Paint had chipped on the firebox behind the wall panels, so they spray-painted with hi-temp black paint. They re-arranged the logs "the correct way" such that black soot no longer builds up on the glass (evidently the logs had previously been configured incorrectly so that considerable soot had been built up). Now the fireplace looks awesome! Also, a screw had been broken in one of the screw holes; they drilled through that to clear it out, so now all appropriate screws are holding the glass door in place. Good as new!!! We are so happy with the job!!! Sol's will now be the only provider we call to work on our fireplace!!

The estimate given for the work was honored. The crew arrived on time and performed the work in an efficient manner. They cleaned up after themselves. Overall, I could not ask for anything more than I received: great work at a reasonable price. I had checked 4 other firms for price and Sol's gave me a great Angie's List price, but the recommendations from Angie's List sealed the deal.

Sol's was awesome!!! I couldn't get my gas logs to light no matter how hard I tried. I called 15 minutes before they closed for the night, and the serviceman suggested I tried a few things first "to save us some money from having a guy come out" (how great is that?!?). After 2 phone calls (and 40 minutes after business hours were over) and 2 different suggestions for how to fix it! They're really customer-focused - even if it means sacrificing a service fee to make sure their customers get everything they need and nothing more. Thanks guys!!

Sol and his brother and crew did a great job. We were in the middle of a chimney rebuild when that contractor discovered that we had no clay liner at all in our chimney. He recommended Sol. Sol was able to work with our schedule and get the liner in very quickly. We learned —the hard way— that because of our higher efficiency furnace we should've gotten a stainless steal liner installed at the time that we got our new furnace. And that's why the chimney was degrading so badly. Sol and his brother are good guys, very affable, professional and good with communication. Would totally recommend and hire them again.

The two brothers made the appointment for 9 to 9:30 a.m. on a Friday morning. They called to confirm the night before and the next morning, and they were right on time. They came for an estimate; we did not know if we were replacing the whole fireplace or just putting in gas. They gave a very reasonable estimate for both jobs and they wrote down the estimates very clearly so I could discuss the details with my husband. This company did not charge an estimation fee, driving fee, or any other fee. They politely provided sound advice and estimates. They were very friendly and open, and they did not appear to care only about making money. These two brothers care about quality work and pleasing their customers. They were very respectful and did not talk down to me, and they gave me good information to make a decision about our fireplace. We are going to have them do the job; we just need to decide between the two choices of replacing the fire-burning fireplace or installing gas. OUTSTANDING service!
Description of Work: We have an old fireplace that at one time burned wood, but the previous owners converted to electric (that now does not work). We are remodeling our family room and wanted to fix the fireplace one way or another. We had another fireplace company come look before Sol's, and they quoted a ridiculous price and charged to come out to our house ($85) even though they are minutes away from us. I found Sol's on Angie's List and decided to get another opinion. I asked them to give an estimate on either fixing the wood-burning elements of the fireplace or converting it to gas.

They were on time for the job and took the time to explain everything that they did and all the warranties that applied. They also removed an old antenna that was up there but not used even though it was not part of the job they came out to do. I will definitely use them again.
Description of Work: I originally called them because I kept hearing water dripping near the fireplace whenever it rained. After coming out for the inspection, they installed alum liner from top of chimney to water heater, replaced vent pipes from water heater to new liner, repaired all cracks in the crown and seal with crown coating, installed stainless steel chimney cap and cleaned behind the damper and sweep box.

Sol's Chimney Sweep was excellent. I left a message for Sol and he called me back within an hour. We scheduled service and I received a reminder call the day before. His technicians arrived on time and asked about the projects. The laundry room is on the second floor so it required going onto a ladder to inspect the dryer vent and then also the chimney. After looking in the basement, I was told that when we converted our furnace to a high-efficiency unit which vented directly outside we were left with a chimney vent that was too wide. It was causing some problems with our hot water heater that I had not even noticed. (The installer of the hot water heater did not mention this situation to me even though it was evident.) The solution was to put a new, smaller liner through the existing liner and connect it properly to the hot water heater. Our chimney chase cover was inspected and it was rusty but still maintains it's integrity. I was given a quote to replace the galvanized chase cover with a stainless steel one that included new storm collars for the fireplace and water heater. My fireplace box was inspected and options were given for new gas logs. While a quote for the chimney work and gas logs was being written, my dryer vent was cleaned thoroughly inside and outside. The work was done with minimal dust and the area was cleaned before leaving. I got a discount for being an Angie's List member and I felt the price was reasonable. I was left with the quote for the chimney vent/cover and gas logs. While getting other quotes, I discovered the HVAC contractor who is already working on our house could replace the vent and cover for us and the plumber could install the gas logs. Their prices were slightly better than Sol's but this is likely because of the larger jobs they are doing in our house. If I was not having this other work done by other contractors, I would hire Sol's. I was impressed by the professional, thorough inspection and reasonable quotes for the work that needed to be done. (The water puddling around the bottom of the fireplace turned out to be a gutter issue.)
Description of Work: My dryer had been turning off before the clothes were dried and it was recommended that I have the dryer vent cleaned. Also, our deck around the fireplace was puddling with water and we wanted to know if there was a problem with the chimney. We are having some remodeling done and also wanted to ask about installing gas logs.

I called during the week and got an appointment for early Sunday morning. They were very flexible in adding me to their schedule. While looking at the base of the chimney in the basement, he noticed that our furnace needs a new liner. The review and estimate was thorough, and Sol was very professional. The reason we did not use him was the higher price and longer wait to have the work completed. However, he was recommended by another service proviser, and I had confidence in the quality of hte final work.

We have a very old house. Another chimney sweep inspected our chimney and told us that it was dangerous and should not be used. It also said that lining was not an option because two fireplaces shared the flu. Sol's agreed on the condition of the chimney, but was able to determine that the second fireplace fed into another flu (with photographic evidence). We hired Sol's to line the chimney and to install a gas line assist in the fireplace. We also had them install non-venting gas logs in the second fireplace. Sol's was on time and very professional. The job ended up being much more difficult than Sol's expected, but Sol's hung in there and completed the job. Despite the extra work, Sol's stuck to the price it originally quoted. It also througouhgly cleaned up after the job.
