The handyman who came out to the house to give an estimate was very professional and surprisingly honest. As soon as we knew when the contractor for the cement work would be out we called Mr Hanyman and they were great about working with us on short notice. He came out and removed the siding. He worked quickly, neatly and handled the siding with care. He knew he had to put the siding back up once the cement work was complete so he was careful with the siding he was removing. The handyman returned, again on short notice, to put the siding back up. He was very curtious, professional and efficient. We would absolutley use them again and in fact plan on it in the Spring.
Description of Work: We had to hire a handyman to remove siding before having new cement work done. After the cement work was complete the handyman returned within a day to put the siding back up.

Mr. Handyman was to arrive at 1500 on 11/29/12. I was called at 1400 and told the other job was taking longer and he would arrive at 1700. At 1630 I was told he should arrive by 1730 and he did so promplty. He was unable to complete the job as the piece that become loose was too short. I advised him it did not have to "look pretty" just secure with no gaps, and asked if he could secure a scrap piece in that area. Imagine a millworker showing up with no wood. I was advised of the additional charges for him to leave and obtain the meterials. I declined and asked him to shore up the loose cabinet door, and he did so. The technician was very polite and helpful and we left the property at the same time. I received an email and picture from the condominium association the next day that there were wood scraps and debris left outside when he used a mason flower box as a saw horse. I immediately called the office and was told the owner would call me later. When I did not receive any response, I called back and asked if I could email the picture, and did. A response from Natasha stated the technician would return the FOLLOWING day. I advised her this is unacceptable and it needed to be done today. She emailed back that she would send a technician out later that day. I was able to arrive at the property at 2000; only to find it had STILL NOT BEEN cleaned. I emailed a new picture to them and cleaned it up myself. As of 12/4/12 I had not had a response. I called today and spoke to Bob who advised me that the technician was "over an hour away in the city, and we weren't got to drop everything" and did not get back in the area until 2100 but I had already cleaned it up. When questioned as to why no on even bothered to contact me or follow up, he stated it "had slipped his mind". This changed my grade from a "D" to an "F".
Description of Work: I needed a kickplate fixed underneath a cabinets at a property I own.

We do not carry a selection of fine woods to match all kinds of cabinetry - we did, we wouldn't have room for our tools! So we would need go and get some. The customer stopped work at her property at exactly the hour mark so that she would not be charged any additional time. It was very late and dark and we missed a few scraps of wood and some saw dust when we cleaned up. It definitely took her longer to take a picture of the mess and email it to us than it would take for us to clean it up. Even knowing this, we scheduled a technician to go to the site and cleanup. The closest technician was an hour away with traffic and we scheduled him to go as soon as he completed to job he was currently working on. He ended up finishing at 2100, and by then the customer emailed she completed it herself. I got the email on my phone and planned to email/call her later when I got back but forgot- sorry, but it happens. The technician was disciplined for not properly cleaning up the job site. Unfortunately, I was not able to stop work in the middle of another customer's job and send them on a 2 hour round trip to spend the 5 minutes needed clean up the mess to meet this customer's time schedule.

Overall, it was a good experience and I have no complaints.
Description of Work: The ceiling in my den was damaged due to a leaking roof and needed replacing. Paul, from Mr. Handyman assessed the damage, explained what materials were needed (which I purchased at Menards) and fully educated me about what he needed to do. It took him 2 days to tear out the old ceiling tiles and replace them. There was an additional charge to haul away the old tiles , but I didn't mind paying it.. Paul was prompt, courteous, professional and cleaned up all debris. I'm pleased with Paul's work and have recommended Mr. Handyman to family/friends and neighbors.

The experience was okay. I just knew that they were a company that wasn’t willing to give me estimates without charging me, and so I decided not to use them for that reason. If they are going to be charging just to tell me what they are going to charge me for the work, or if I had to pay them to look at every project, then I probably won't use them.
Description of Work: I called up Mr Handyman of Oak Park & River Forest and enquired about some drywall work. They e-mail estimates but they did not do any work. They didn’t give me an estimate. They were going to charge me to come and give me an estimate, and so I chose not to do that.

We don't need to see a small water damaged spot on the ceiling to estimate the repair costs. Small repairs like this are simple to estimate over the phone since we do these all the time. It would increase our price if we had to send someone out to look at every 2 foot hole in the ceiling just to tell them the same thing we told them over the phone since a simple 2 hour job would involve several several hours of travel.

Price was the same as competitors. They came out and did the job while I was at work, so I never actually saw them in person. A small portion of my gutters has plastic covers. When I arrived home, a section of the covers was on the lawn. It was a windy day and I assume the person cleaning the gutters either forgot to reattach the cover after the cleaning or he didn't attach it correctly and it blew down. I called and ask that they put the cover back on, and they did.

I've tried to use them a few times for various work (installing window air conditioners, installing a microwave, micc household repairs). Every time I have called, I have had a hard time speaking with anybody. Typically they advise there is a month or longer wait before they can get out. They must have some real loyal customers that keep them busy, but seems they are understaffed to handle their volume.

This customer obviously has us confused with someone else. We answer 98% of our calls live and return any voicemails the same day. I chose not to have the work performed by this company.
Description of Work: I was calling around to some companies for some relatively minor repairs for a unit in the Loop area and was told that the cost was $146 for the first hour, $96 for each additional hour - charged in half hour increments. Any parking charges are passed to the customer. If parts are required they charge a $20 fee plus a mark-up on the parts. My regular guy is going on vacation so I can't use him for the job, only charges $80 an hour and doesn't nickle and dime you with additional charges.

The work was good and they were on time. I thought the cost was high compared with other places I've looked at. They charged several fees on top of their hourly rate of $85/hr.
Description of Work: We were preparing to put our house up for sale. He did some plumbing and miscellaneous projects.
They did real good work. They took time to make sure that they had all the angles covered and that there wasn't any possibility of leaks or rotted wood and all of the things surrounding the plumbing were in ship shape. I was very pleased. The pricing was reasonable and the quality was good. I had to make a follow up phone call regarding their responsiveness. I would definitely use them again.

I used this company just a couple of weeks ago and needed shelves hung. They were great - very timely-did great work. I did not apply the coupon as well. This time i called to have more work done and was put on hold, never called back - i had to chase and then was told no one would be available till Monday,. Then said they would call me back - and 3 hours later called and said no one would be available. My issue is that i could of found someone else waiting for 3 hours. I found the service to be lacking this time. A shame as i recieved a nice note to remind to use them again - i tried but it wont work if your customer service is this poor.

I did speak to this customer and apologized for this breakdown in our service. We were trying to reschedule appointments to fit her in for a last minute job and waiting for customers to return our calls. We should have told her that we told her that we could not do the work the day she requested because we were full but that we would call her if a time slot opened up instead of leaving her hanging for a few hours while we tried to juggle our schedule. We set a bad expectation and we apologize for that. We have gone over training with our customer service representatives so that we will set the proper expectations in the future.
I have used Mr Handyman of Lincoln Park numerous times over the last two years. The team I have worked with (Paul, Jeff, Dave and Natasha) are always prompt and friendly to work with. They will offer suggestions if necessary to help make informed decisions on work to be done. They have a breadth of knowledge that keeps me coming back to have them help me with my home repairs and projects.

Kurt arrived on time and kept working at our variety of jobs until he was finished. He did a nice job on everything and put up with our yapping dog the entired time. If possible, he tried to repair things with what we had on hand i.e. blocking hole in fence, righting bird feeders. He was very nice and professional. We used Mr. Handyman at a friend's recommendation, and we would use them again.
Description of Work: Repaired door knob on side door that was loose. Kurt bought another knob which he said would work better. It has. Repaired light socket in bedroom closet. Put our front gate back on its hinges. Blocked an escape hole in fence (to keep small dog in). Repositioned several bird seeders that were listing to one side because of fat, greedy squirrels. Cleaned, prepped and painted basement stairs.

I couldn't have been happier with the work Kurt did for us. First and foremost, he's very professional and polite, which made working with him a pleasure. Secondly, there's nothing the guy can't do. He tackled every project head-on, whether it was laying/installing sheetrock for the bathroom floor, cutting/laying ceramic tile, disconnecting/repairing leaky toilets, doing electric work for the new light fixture, installing new plumbing for the new bathroom faucet, cutting/installing glass/ceramic tiles for our kitchen backsplash, changing out hardware in the condo, etc.... With this experience, I learned a lot from and he allowed me to help him with a number of the tasks related to each project, which certainly helped me save money and learn a lot along the way. Plus he would update me periodically as to what materials I needed to buy next, so he could keep working, while I went to the store. Kurt was prompt each day, put in a lot of hours to get the project completed in a timely manner, regularly cleaned up after himself, and was very patient with me, considering all the questions I had for him. I had originally priced out the job for a contractor to do everything, but in the end, I saved several hundred dollars doing the project myself, with Kurt's help. My only complain is w/ their Angie's List $50 off discount, they had offered back in July. On the last day, I meant to ask Kurt to take $50 off of my final bill, but I forgot. So in the end, I paid the full bill, but never got my $50 off. I called the office a couple times after the job was completed, yet no one ever called me back to, to help me get the $50 credit I had coming to me. Despite getting screwed out of the $50 that I should have received, I was very happy with the handyman that Mr. Handyman provided. Kurt really knew his stuff and I would highly recommend using him for any miscellaneous jobs & projects. I just hope you are able to get your discount, unlike my failed attempts. Fyi....you pay the handyman w/ this company an hourly rate. Though you pay a lesser hourly rate, the more hours you use him for a specific project. ========== UPDATE: On Monday, Sept. 26th, 2011, I received an email from the co-owner Bob, and he acknowledged there was a breakdown in communication amongst staff, regarding the Angie's List Discount that I never received. He told me to call the office and they immediately credited my credit card for the $50 I was due. Bob, thanks for acknowledging the mistake and making good on your promise to process a credit for me!
Description of Work: Kevin, their handyman tech, help me remodel my bathroom, along with other miscellaneous projects around my condo. The bathroom remodeling involved replacement of the vanity, mirror, and a lighting fixture. Plus we re-tiled the floor of the bathroom. I also had glass/ceramic tile backsplash installed in my kitchen, had all hardward changed out on all doors throughout the condo, and had two leaky toilets fixed. Work lasted over 3 days, totalling 21.5 man hours.

We contacted the member and processed the discount. He emailed our part time office person instead of our main contact email so I remedied the situation as soon as I heard about it today.
Technician arrived close to expected time. Introduced himself. Very friendly, cordial, drove a company van with logo. Ceiling fans Replaced both fans as requested. Neither he nor I checked to see if the remote of each would interfere with the other (which I found later it did), even though both had different maker. He had to come out later to change the dip switch settings of one. Later in the evening when my wife went to bed we found he had left the old, dirty fan on our bed. Earlier in the day, at the end of the day, the technician said he left the fan upstairs and do I want him to bring it down. I said no, as I could do that myself. What I did not expect was to find it on my bed. If anything, I would have expected there to be some sort of plastic on the bed underneath it to protect my sheets and such from the dirty fan. Guess not. 3-way switch replaced He replaced a functioning 3-way switch with a new white, quieter one, along with matching outlet and faceplate. Unfortunately I later found out the wiring was wrong as the light worked turned off only from the switch where it was turned on. Regardless if you used the switch on the first or second floor. He had to come out to resolve his wiring mistake. Accordian door added Asked me how I'd install it into the opening as the door was taller, without cutting the door. I gave my opinion. I should have expected him to "measure twice, do it once" for this case. He said it would fit after I gave him what I'd try. Did all that work, only to find out the door was still slightly taller and he still had to cut it. He swept up his dust, mostly, from cutting the drywall. Get 2nd floor bathroom operational (originally optional) I didn't think he'd be able to. He did break the handle trying to do this initially, and had to run out for a new one (although why he went so far to do so, and why it took so long, is a mystery). Did get it working, although sluggishly. But it was working. Rep[lace hardware in 1st floor tub/shower He did remove some of the parts, but was unable to loosen the hardware from the mixer. Said he could at least replace the cartridge to get the leaking stopped. When he was trying to remove the cartridge, he broke part of the mixer itself. He had to turn off the water to the tub/shower. Instead of telling me what he did, he tried to cover it up by saying he couldn't do it, and the mixer itself would have to be replaced because the rest was too difficult to remove. To do this they would need access to the wall in my closet behind the shower. I told him I'd have to clean that closet out some before that could happen. Remove old large satellite dish Most of it removed. Left some brackets that were bolted to the roof. Had "thought" he'd remove those and caulk them. However, he said the roofer had roofed around it, making that most likely impossible without requiring possible re-roof for that area. Provide info on re-aligning rear entry door Didn't provide info. Instead, he repositioned the strike plate to make locking the door easier. Not what I wanted, and figured he probably couldn't do that. So let it be. At least locking it was better and didn't require a crow bar now. Estimate for 1st floor bathroom remodel Since the first floor tub/shower was now non-functional, I indicated I might consider having the bathroom remodeled instead. Technician indicated this business also did that type of work. We discussed what would be done, types of tile, fixtures, etc. He indicated he'd get with his boss to provide a proper estimate, but gave me somewhat of a verbal one. Never heard back. In addition, I found out later (when the office admitted he overcharged me for work not performed) that I was charged for his time in discussing this project proposal. I had tried to contact them after the first return to discuss these additional issues. Some were found (like the bathroom stuff) when I had a licensed plumber come in and try to fix it. It was then that the plumber said he couldn't fix the first floor one because of a broken pipe. All of these things just built up the frustration. I admit my first contact was by e-mail. I wanted to use that to outline each issue I wanted to discuss so we could come to some agreeable resolution. I asked for a refund at that point, but only for the time the technician spent discussing a proposal for the remodel. No response to the e-mail. I later tried to call the owner. He had left for the day. The admin indicated she'd leave him the message, and had forwarded him the email, but would do it again. Again, nothing. I am always open to discussing the issues in an effort to resolve them. I know this probably isn't the norm, or at least I would hope not. And this is my experience only.
Description of Work: Ceiling fans replaced (2) One of the 3-way switches replaced for a hallway light Accordian style door added Get 2nd floor tub/shower operational Replace tub/shower hardware on 1st floor Remove 8' satellite dish from mudroom roof Provide information on how best to re-align rear entry door Estimate for 1st floor bathroom remodel

What is true in this review is that we sent our technician back to correct at our cost the ceiling fan remotes that although from different manufacturers seemed to control both fans and we also corrected a wiring issue in a location other than where we replaced the switch. Obviously neither of these was our fault, but we did not charge for this work. I contacted the customer to ensure that everything was fixed and he stated he was happy with our work. The next morning I found scathing and lengthy reviews posted on the internet. I assume that any reasonable person would call me to tell me of the additional problems he had since I had so cheerfully repaired the initial issues. I won't go into detail on all of the points he has posted here since the customer has received my responses to all of these questions and I know we did quality work and explained every action we planned to take along with options and he made choices. For instance, the "estimate" he claims to have paid for was discussed when our technician came back to his house to fix the fan and wiring issue which was a free service call. I am the first to send my technicians back to correct any issues that we have caused or to make things right as dozens of my reviews show. I will leave it up to you readers to draw your own conclusions about his motivations for writing this review.
