Response from Cityscape Landscape
[member name removed], I am very sorry for the miscommunication and lack of service. This has been my most challenging Spring since I started Cityscape. The long winter with late snow cover eliminated March and the beginning of April for landscaping estimates. This compressed our Spring season into a very short window. We were literally flooded with inquiries for estimates that simply overloaded me, my staff and our phone service. In an effort to stay on top of this one thing we did was to upgrade our phone service and change our carrier. During this change over we had some periods without phone service and lost some VM's. I suspect this occurred with your call. Again, I am sorry. If you still require help please e-mail, kevin@cityscapelandscape.com For the future. We are making changes to help better serve clients during our busy Spring period. I know this is of little counsel to you at this late date. Let me repeat my self and say, I am sorry. Kevin Coogan

I called on 4/2/2014 left a message to call me back and again on 4/23/2014 with a Kevin and never received a call back. Call the same number to final get to speak to someone who I have to say was rude on the phone. Before I could finish what I was looking for cut me off and told me he was not interested in doing work for us. Not good customer services at all. And this place has 4 1/2 stars would love to know how that is so.

Brian came out initially to listen to what we wanted to do to our backyard as we had just bought the house. We had some ideas as to how we wanted to proceed and ran them by Brian. He listened to what we were looking to accomplish and then provided some ideas of his own. After receiving the estimate and his input, we decided to go with Brian and his crew. They showed up promptly and completed the work on time. Additionally, Brian was available to answer any questions we asked about maintenance and future plans. Would definitely do business with again.

I typically don't write reviews for work I did not have done but wanted to echo a few other complaints I read. I can't recommend them based on their poor response time and lack of professionalism in email correspondence. I also agree that they don't seem interested in taking on new business. I admittedly called at the worst possible time (record breaking snow fall and low temps) seeking snow removal service for a small building, but a little professional courtesy would have gone a long way. UPDATE: I received an apologetic email from Brian a few days later explaining how their business operates and answering my questions.
Description of Work: Called about snow removal services, but did not hear back for a week. When I followed up with a general question about how snow removal service typically works. I received the same "we aren't taking on new clients."

Working with Ryan from Cityscape was a great experience -- we liked his design, he was responsive, and his team did great work. His team removed all of our existing landscaping (including overgrown/dead plants and poorly designed beds) and a 35' concrete walkway along the side of our house. They installed all new planting materials in the front and back, new sod in our backyard, and pavers in place of the old concrete walkway. The team was efficient and got the entire job done in about 4 days. The paver stonework turned out beautifully and we were extremely happy with the landscaping. We were so glad we went with Cityscape and would recommend them highly.

Fiasco. Brian Coogan, son of the owner, came to our house a few days before the landscaping work was to be done to look at the work that needed to be done and to give me an estimate. He gave me an estimate for $700 for the work we needed to have done in our courtyard which I accepted during the meeting. The next day Brian sent me an invoice requiring that a deposit (paid electronically) be put down in advance for the work with the balance required to be paid electronically after the work was done. I pointed out that the prepayment was not part of the original estimate and that I felt it was inappropriate for such a small project that there be a deposit particularly since it wasn't part of the estimate provided to me and which I accepted. I told both Brian and his father Kevin that I would pay them by check immediately following the completion of the work on Aug. 29th. Apparently that was not acceptable to Cityscape. After back and forth with Brian and his father Kevin the owner, they were adamant that a deposit be paid or else they wouldn't do the project. At 4PM today, Aug. 28th they called to say that they wouldn't be able to do the work promised for Aug. 29th. Additionally, they were not responsive to my initial inquiry. I called and left a message last week and never heard back from them despite their voice message saying they would get back to me within 48 hours. That didn't happen so I sent an email and finally got a response. While Kevin may have a horticultural background, his son Brian didn't know the names of the various plants in our courtyard. This firm's focus is improving its cash flow, not on providing good customer service nor on bothering to learn about plants.

Response from Cityscape Landscape
This is Brian Coogan My company asks for a deposit from all customers.....I explained to [member name removed] over the phone the very next day. I did not single [member name removed]out. I ask for a deposit from everyone. I think its unreasonable for [member name removed] to claim that I don't know my plants. The project she needed completed was too remove dead plants from some containers and install new plants that her landscape architect would pick out. [member name removed] never asked me to identify what the dead plants that needed to be replaced were. She did not ask me for my suggestions on what to install. All she wanted from me was to remove the dead plants and install the plants that someone else picked out. We lightly discussed the vines growing in her yard. I tried explaining to [member name removed] that she had two different vines growing on the wall. Boston Ivy and Virginia Creeper. She disagreed with me and said she only Boston Ivy. The project had nothing to do with the vines so I changed the subject. I met [member name removed] on a Monday and gave her a verbal estimate. On Tuesday I emailed her an invoice. Wednesday morning she sent an email saying she would not pay a deposit. I replied explaining that my company asks for a deposit from everyone and without it I would not be able to do her project. There were many phone calls back and forth that day. She would not take no for an answer.. At the end the day [member name removed] left me a voicemail stating that she would not pay a deposit and if I did not show up the next day to perform the work she would write aggressively negative reviews on Angie's list and Yelp. I did not appreciate the threat. One more phone call was made to her kindly telling her that we would not be there the next day to perform the work.

Brian came to give me a quote on a Friday. We talked through different options for improving the backyard. He listened to my needs and ideas and expertly suggested different materials and layouts. We decided on a plan and he happened to have an opening the following Tuesday for the work to be done. On Tuesday morning Brian drew up a more detailed plan and his crew got right to work. They were efficient and professional, clearing the yard and completing all the hardscaping (beautiful, curved paver brick walkway; creative bricks and stone steps for back door entry, and crushed red gravel area). The next day they returned to put on the finishing touches and lay the sod. Our backyard was completely transformed! We could not be happier with the results, and would definitely use Cityscape again. Our yard was a mess -- roots, random bricks in the ground, weeds, broken concrete -- but these professionals took care of everything. So impressed.

All work was done promptly and on time. Great followup after the work as well to make sure we were satisfied and any problems fixed.
Description of Work: We had a tree removed from our patio which had a paver bench surrounding it. Cityscape removed the bench and extended our patio using the same pavers as our current patio. They also removed brick surrounding the patio and replaced with stones we have found on the beach. Great work. Owner came back to see how everything went. We noticed a few things and all was corrected promptly.

Started on time with the team actually coming in sooner. Went through the final checks and then the guys went straight to work. They worked really well as a team and knew exactly how to handle everything. They worked tirelessly throughout the day and finished everything but the crabapple tree trimming. The job was performed really well and they explained with a follow up on everything that I would need to do and how to do it. They stated they would come back to finish the tree part. I personally haven't seen them since nor do I see what needed to get done but it looks good to me so maybe they did come back and fix it. Would have been good to hear a follow up. I would definitely use them again above anybody else. Price was good and the guys will definitely have much more work coming their way from me as soon as I have it!

If you're looking for a landscaper who understands teeny tiny little Chicago backyards & gardens, Brian at Cityscape is your guy. He's lived in the city for years and understands the limitations of working with small spaces and small condo associations. When you meet with him to get a quote, you'll understand what I mean. You instantly get a sense that the work will be done on time, as promised, and that Cityscape will stand by their work. We live in a condo association, however, and getting everyone to agree on what needed to be done professionally was challenging, so we didn't actually have Cityscape do the work for us. When we're ready for professional landscaping services, I would call Brian again. Highly recommend.

Wow - these guys are amazing. I should say that first, I used them to beautify my embarrassing lawn when I was moving out of our condo. They came in 24 hours and may overgrown, weedy lawn looked amazing. My house sold in 10 days! So of course, we decided to use them with our new house. They came immediately for an estimate. Told us which trees had to go (we had some pesky mulberries) and helped us determine what to plant in it's place. They suggested a nice place for a garden and gave us ideas as to trees that would thrive in our yard. The work got done super quickly. Trees down and mulched one day. Work done the next. They were fast, friendly and my yard looks great. It's a work in progress. Next year, we'll be able to afford more (and we'll call Kevin at City Scape without question) but this year we can enjoy our new yard because of them.
Description of Work: We cut down two trees, created a garden space, put limestone steps in the dirt, cleaned construction mess, weeded, planted two birch trees in the back, a Japanese maple and some box woods in the front and also a hydrangea, planted new sod and put down some grass seed.

The experience was very good. It was a little expensive. I would definitely use them again and would recommend them.
Description of Work: We used Cityscape Landscape to put in a large manufactured patterned stone paver patio in our backyard. They excavated and removed soil. They took manufactured stone pavers and put them in a nice pattern in the back. They removed a tree and installed some fox wood plants, some hydrangea and they graded the backyard to level it off. They also installed new sod and mulched all my planting beds.

Frankly, this was too long ago for me to recall exactly how it went. I do remember they were very nice and accomodating and patient with our Townhouse Association and their difficulty making up their mind. However, we ultimately did not use their services, partly based on price and partly based in one of our members who had personal experience with the landscaper we did use. Their price was fair. We just found a lower price,

Brian from Cityscape was great. Explaining it all every step of the way. We probably spent more than we had planned on, but the results are amazing. The front and back yards completely change the look of our house. We have so much room in our backyard now to entertain or just hang out in. The work we had Cityscape do will increase the value of our home for years to come.
Description of Work: We hired Cityscape to do some major work in our front and back yard and could not be happier with how it all turned out. We had literally, "tons" of concrete in our backyard. Cityscape came in and removed all of the concrete in our back yard, tilled and leveled, and planted sod. They also built us a sidewalk with pavers extending from our back deck all the way to the alley, and also to the garage. We took out our front fence, and had Cityscape build us a new brick sidewalk leading up to the steps. They also took out some really old bushes that were out of control, leveled out the front yard, planted sod and landscaped around the front of the steps and side fence. They trimmed back trees so that we got more direct sunlight on our yard.

They understood the demands of our townhome association location in terms of sun/shade and plant type and provided a very reasonable estimate. Unlike every other landscaping company I met with to discuss the project, Cityscape Landscape just wanted to drive by the building and then follow up with me. They called when they were standing on my yard so I know they came out. They had some unique ideas and I was looking forward to getting their estimate. They told me they would follow up with the estimate. However, they never did. They also didn't return any of my phone calls asking about the promised estimate. I would not recommend this company.

We sought multiple estimates from many providers before finally settling on Brian and his crew from Cityscape. We chose Brian based on his combination of professionalism and reputation and exceptional pricing. Brian made multiple trips out prior to beginning work to be sure to straighten out all the details prior to his crew beginning the job. I always appreciate the 'measure twice, cut once' type of professionals that Brian and his father embody. He showed us multiple samples of different types of stone as well as provided us with several options to replace an old sewer grate in the space we paved. When the Cityscape crew showed up to do the work, they were professional, neat and courteous. The job was done in the three working day time frame that was promised. And if that was not enough, the results Cityscape delivered were well above any expectations we had. Our patio now features three separate drainage pitches with two new drains and one new wrought iron sewer cover. They had to change the height of the main sewer grate and provided us with a beautiful new grate that met our specifications perfectly. Overall, I would recommend Cityscape very highly to all my friends for any hardscape or landscaping needs. We plan on using Cityscape again for other landscaping services around our condo complex in the future.

Originally, I got the impression that they felt our job was too small as they wanted to quote for more work than I asked. However, they came back and did the job I wanted for a fair price. The quality is top rate...better than I expected. The pavers were done in a beautiful pattern, which was more time consuming and costly, but worth it in the end. They clearly know what they are doing and I'll hire them again when I can afford landscaping.

We initially e-mailed Cityscape to secure a second quote to professionally landscape the two parkways in front of our condo building on W Barry. Brian Coogan returned our call and arranged to stop by and discuss the project later that week. We then met with Brian and discussed our general plan and what we were looking for in terms of shrubs and perennial plants. We also discussed constructing a raised stone planter and pavers in the smaller odd-shaped west parkway. Brian listened to us and also gave us his advice on what he thought would work best for us and how we could accomplish it. Brian then e-mailed us a quote for both parkways and our condo board then met and discussed the quote and decided we were not sure if we wanted to go with the stone planter and also had a few more questions regarding choices in plants. We then asked Brian to come back for a second meeting and discuss other options and answer our questions. He came back a few days later and answered all our questions regarding the plants in the east parkway and we eventually decided to only put down Unilock pavers in the smaller parkway and plant a small ornamental tree in the center. Brian then went back and revised his quote and also was able to get the overall cost under what we had budgeted which was awesome. The job was then completed the following week on schedule and we could not be happier with the results. Both parkways have been transformed from areas of worn out grass and weeds to things of beauty. All in all, Brian and his crew are real pros who did a fantastic job in helping us achieve our goal of having two good looking and low maintenance parkways.
