Bought four plants with them over 2 year span for more than a thousand dollars, all of them had problems or died. The owner is rude (nice way to put it) and has a "blame the customer" approach. We first bought an aubrey ficus which was diseased with spider mites from day 1. We ended up visiting their store multiple times to try and cure the plant, each time being sold a new solution for dozens of dollars with assurances it would cure it. Ultimately nothing worked and we spend almost $400 for the tree and $200 on products to cure it. We also bought a pink drift role, a maple tree, and an alocasia plant from them. When purchasing we were given care instructions from the the store associate. B Both the maple tree and alocasia died shortly thereafter. When we revisited the store and inquired about what could have gone wrong, we were given a completely new set of instructions and told the old sales associate who helped us was misinformed. The store didn't offer an exchange, a refund, or anything to remedy the situation. They just said they offer no guarantees once the plant leaves their store. We've spent enough time in the store that most of the staff knows us by now. The staff is not well trained, give conflicting and inconsistent advice, and mostly make stuff up as they go. They are all afraid of the owner and agree the ownership/management sucks but are afraid to speak up.

I highly recommend Cityscape for your landscaping project. We had a pretty unique situation with our six-unit town-home complex and the way our back yards are situated. We needed new fences and then each unit designed and chose their own individual stones. So, essentially, Cityscape had to coordinate six unique jobs at the same time. To make matters worse and make this project even more complicated was the fact that we broke ground (and had our old fences taken down) the Monday of the week COVID-19 hit the US and Illinois shut down. This was obviously a very difficult time for everyone and made coordination of this project even more challenging, especially since no one really knew what was going on at that early stage. I couldn’t have asked Cityscape to handle the situation any better. Brian the owner, Tony the project manager, Jesus the team manager, and Carlos their fence guy were absolutely fantastic throughout the entire process. They were extremely friendly, communicated very well and were on top of the project the whole time. The team was extremely thorough and detail oriented. All of the lines are straight and everything fits together to perfection. Despite all the setbacks caused by COVID, Brian and Cityscape kept the project on budget and required no added costs, even after some tweaks to the plan and additional requests. They happily came back to make adjustments and touch up any small items brought up by the owners. Given that we are near Wrigley Field, we had a pretty strong request to get the project completed before the baseball season started. Even with the delays caused by COVID, Cityscape was able to get the project completed within what would have been a couple of days of Opening Day. Had there not been the shutdown they absolutely would have met our schedule. This was no small job, as you can see from the pictures, and required some significant excavation, grading, and leveling across all yards. All of our units are thrilled with the work Cityscape completed and could not be happier with the results. I can’t thank Cityscape enough for the excellent and extremely detailed work they completed, but even more so on how they handled themselves through this extremely difficult time. #TradesShowUp

They did an exceptional job! The wall looks great and they completed the job quickly. Everyone was professional and the estimate came in much cheaper than other companies. Also, their workers have years of experience and they knew exactly what to do, how to handle issues, and offered great solutions to fix any special circumstances. They are now my go-to landscape company.

The design consultant(Ryan) came out and spoke with me and took measurements. Over the next couple of weeks I received no responses to my emails. Finally he responds and says that he was very busy with landscape deadlines for the 4th of July holiday. I responded with a request for an eta on his landscape design and I never received a response. I called him several days later and left a voicemail. There has been no response. I'm just glad that I didn't sign a contract and I can easily move on to another contractor.

We had a great experience. They provided a great design with attention to our requests. Adapted as needed. Installed in one day and flawlessly. Came in right on budget. We hope to use them again.
Description of Work: CityScape provided design and installation for our Townhouse association and parkway.
I worked with Ryan on a design for our small backyard that incorporated current plantings, removing good walkway pavers, regrading, raising the area where the walkway was (it had settled & water pooled in several areas), then replacing those pavers. They also put in a dog turf dog run along the east side of the house, again where water pooled in nothing but mulch and overgrown ferns & hostas. What was nothing more than a knee deep forest to walk through, muddy & ishy, became a lovely, spot to play with the dogs. I'd encourage anyone with a dog, who wants a maintenance free zone from mowing, smells, etc, to highly consider this product. The east side of the house used to pool with water as well. Ryan & his workers, graded down the area, and like pavers, put in a gravel base with proper drainage, sand & weed barrier. The faux "yard" looks amazing! It's guaranteed for 15 years, will not fade, and once every couple of years you sprinkle on silica sand to aid with oder. If your dog does it deed, simply spray it off with your hose. Ryan & the guys, replanted many volunteer hostas and put a gorgeous Denver stone retaining wall (for us the was key, in keeping our mulch beds separate from the yard & patio). Last but not least, they guys put in two absolutely amazingly beautiful blue stone patios. One one each side of our walkway. I can't say how much this whole new living space has made a difference in our summer! It's an extension from our house, to the deck and onto the patios and yard. To complete, they removed all the remaining mulch under our deck & put in lovely river rock, again with proper drainage. Pooling water is gone! Living life has returned to a dreary backyard in high style! I can't thank Ryan and the guys enough. Well they only way I know how, is to invite them back to do our front yard next spring!!!!! Cityscape Landscape Rocks! I would & have recommend this crew to anyone. They work with your ideas and make dreams come true!!!!
Description of Work: Removed mulch and volunteer hostas & ferns, created new drainage around the whole yard, put in dog turf, retaining walls, used current pavers we had, cleaned them and redid the walkway with them (as it was sinking and had weeds growing throughout and pooled water), put in a blue stone patios, put river rock under the deck< where mulch was decomposing, smelling & holding water.

Ed and his team removed a planter and trees that had not survived the winter of 2014, opening up our back patio and refreshing it with new plantings. But the daunting task was our front entryway: a below grade entry whose pavers were continually damp, mossy and conjuring images of "Swamp Thing." Ed and his team set out to tackle a new concept, removing the pavers and replacing with landscaping, in October 2014. The first obstacle they encountered: unseasonally cold weather in November 2014, with a hard freeze and temperatures below 20F. The next obstacle: water, water everywhere! Despite the challenges, Ed would not give up. He sourced a civil engineer to evaluate the water problem and design a solution. We had to weather the winter of 2015 with our entry way torn up and covered in plastic; when Spring came, Ed and his team were back, sorting out a solution. Finally, a second sump pump was installed, immediately solving our years-old water problem. Now assured the plantings would not drown, Ed's team quickly and elegantly transformed our entry way into a charmingly landscaped courtyard, complete with park bench, trellis, and tree. Thank you, thank you, thank you! In addition, some of the plants had not survived the winter of 2015 and were replaced at no charge. We highly recommend Cityscape!
Description of Work: Landscaped back patio and completely transformed front entryway.
This company sent out Matt, an associate of the company, who was straight forward and made a point of completely understanding what we wanted. After listening intently, he also provided ideas and suggestions that would enhance our property and our project. After taking measurements of our property and factoring in our concerns as well as our stated budget, he developed a plan - with some embellishments, that we liked but ultimately could not afford since it ended up going over our hard budget. We appraised Matt of our problem and over several email and telephone exchanges over a week, he hung in there - even though some of our changes in order to stay within budget but still maintaining the basis of what we wanted, he didn't lose his cool. After discussing the changes and the budget with his boss, we were able to arrive at a compromise on design and scope but not the quality and type of materials. Another associate/part owner, Kevin, called and respectfully requested to come to our home to review the project and get exact parameters, measurements and location of certain items - all to ensure that we had exactly what we wanted, without compromise or change in materials - and to make sure that the job was exactly as envisioned. He made the request during the weekend, explaining he had other commitments but wanted to swing by and see if he could survey the property. We approved and he was there on time after confirming with a telephone call. He finished his business within an hour, and while doing, pointed out certain aspects of the job and even agreed to some additions at no charge. I must add that he was meticulous in mapping out our project, asking questions, listening to our concerns and not leaving anything to chance. I was very impressed with his preparation. Example: There was a slight misunderstanding about the project drawing/layout. The one he had originally was much different that what we wanted. When I pointed it out to him he immediately asked for the drawing that I had provided during an email exchange. He took it, incorporated it into his plotting and completed his calculations - all down to the last detail. On the day of the installation the crew arrived on time with all the required hardware, machinery and materials. They set to work and were not shy about confirming what we wanted and where through Matt, who was overseeing the project. This crew did not stop (with the exception of a lunch break) and continued to work until they completed the job over a period of 8 hours! Given what they had to do I was certain they would have to come back to finish up the next day. You could tell that these men were good at what they do, attention to detail - and they did extras. Example: A water feature that was supported by a bricked up rectangular wall had to be removed, excavated and then graded for the installation of the pavers. This item was sitting on a concrete foundation reinforced with rebar. They painstakingly dismantled the structure, retained enough undamaged bricks to complete an unfinished enclosure at the rear of my property that was unsightly - especially with the new improvements. This crew completed the wall with the left over bricks and made it look brand new - at no extra charge. The patio area was graded, gravel installed, compacted and leveled, torpedo sand installed, leveled and then the pavers were meticulously installed - paver by paver - with a border design that my spouse and I specified. The shape of the patio was quite irregular and somewhat uneven. Yet this crew managed to make it look beautiful. They then removed the existing grass and installed new sod. They cleaned up the site and then went on their way. As difficult as it was to find a good contractor that was genuinely willing to actually work with us, it turned out to be a great experience. Kudos to Matt and the company. We learned that they have landscaping contracts with the City of Chicago. We had seen their trucks and employees at work over the years but didn't make the connection until we spoke with Matt. It seems that this is one of those large companies that is willing to do a good job for the individual family - and at a reasonable price with quality service.
Description of Work: Install a paver patio using Unilock Premier Pavers, 160 square feet, river rock and fabric around bushes, remove existing water feature, install sod.

They are slow at getting quotes back to you. The guy who came out said it would take him 2 or 3 days to get us a quote but it took him a week and a half, and that was annoying. I think they're really slow with responsiveness. But, the guy was really nice. I also think that they're a little pricey - I would get multiple quotes from a couple of landscapers to compare prices for shrubbery and trees. We got a quote for artificial grass and he only brought one sample which I thought was weird because if you're going to spend $3000 on artificial grass, I feel like you should be able to choose, not just provide one sample.

[Member name removed] I am very sorry it took so long to get you an estimate. Six weeks ago our main phone was ringing every 2 hours. By the end of the week it was ringing every 10 minutes. We got insanely busy performing estimates. I am sorry you had to wait so much longer than you were told you would have to. There are several synthetic turf suppliers in the market today. I believe that the best turf for a residential installation is XGrass Luxury Pro. I have been installing this turf for the last 3 years. 3 years ago I had XGrass mail me samples of their entire offering. They sent me approximately 30 samples and I laid them out on a table. I asked a few people to choose which one felt and looked the best...everyone chose Luxury Pro. I want my staff to offer the best products to our customers. That is why Ryan Hall only brought XGrass Luxury Pro with when he met with you. Its very important to be competitive. Please let me know how much higher my company is compared to the other bidders and I will see what I can do to earn your business. Thank You Brian Coogan

A nearby diagonal street makes my back yard smaller than typical. A new garage now covered the entire former yard leaving only a narrow strip of land surrounding it. I was concerned that my house might flood so I called City Scape. CityScape lowered the ground level around the garage (dug a ditch) for drainage. They installed a drain system on one side and filled the entire area with weed preventing cloth and river rock. City Scape employees were friendly and professional. The bid was the lowest of two. I'm happy with the results. I'll call them again when I'm ready to landscape the front yard!

They were on time and did exactly what we asked them to do. They were a little skimpy on the amount of mulch they laid down & we had to have them come back, for an additional cost to put down more. it went perfectly. brian coogan was quick to respond to our request for work; he had many ideas to supplement our thoughts about what we wanted to accomplish and we implemented them. the crew was prompt each day, respectful of the neighbors and alley traffic and did a great job of clean up each day. when the work was about 1/3 complete, some of the stones we had selected began to crack. unacceptable. brian had no problem bringing more samples for us to select from, removing what had been done and completing the job from there. oh yeah, they also planted a very pretty rhododendron bush in the front.
Description of Work: removed several feet, long and high, of railroad tie we had in our backyard/driveway; replaced it with stone and it looks much better than it did before the job started. also removed and replaced the brick under our electric gate so that the gate wouldn't drag when opening/closing in the cold weather.

The job went extremely well. Workmanship was excellent. Though their bid was highest of four by 15%, I engaged Cityscape Landscape for their consultative approach to the design and their flexibility to adjust as the project progressed. In addition, they demonstrated a very helpful savvy for working within tight city properties and in consideration of all the typical obstacles encountered in the city. The Unilock product itself is very high quality and is available through an unlimited number of providers, but the best experience comes with a company patient and creative enough to make suggestions, rather than simply take orders from a homeowner. Brian Coogan is very good to work with and was extremely helpful suggesting ideas and pleasantly adjusting to changing decisions, as I learned and the project progressed. This project was for my front yard and public way. I plan to engage Cityscape for a second project in the back yard including additional planters and lighting. Cityscapes' work definitely created additional value for my single family home.

Called Cityscape Landscape in early May to install new sod in my backyard. It is a shaded yard, and the last time we had sod put installed, by another Angie's List landscaper, it died within two years. The Cityscape estimator gave us this best opinion as to what type of grass will grow in a such a shaded urban yard. Then, they provided us with a great price, and even installed the sod when we needed it, just a day before a big family gathering. We will probably have them back in the fall to prepare the yard to seed the yard. We were very impressed with their professionalism, service and overall product. It is mid-June and the grass in our yard is growing nice. Thank you Cityscape Landscaping. Thank you, Angie's List.
