Rick and owner George arrived right on time, did an inspection of the "problem area" and examined the remains of what we suspected were termites. They diagnosed them as citronella ants. But even after that quick diagnosis, they proceeded to do a detailed examination of the wood supports and joists in our basement, and looked at certain areas by the footing of the walls to look for potential problem areas. In addition, they went to the front of the house and looked underneath our front porch and gave some tips about cleaning out the leaves, etc. to prevent other creatures from using them for bedding, putting some poison down to cut down on the bug invasion. Our basement walls are brick and have significant effluourescence issues, so George discussed a potential solution for waterproofing and keeping moisture out, which is a prime reason that we have ants and insects in our basement. He also examined our catch basin and said that we might have a future problem with sewer backup. So, all in all, even after realizing that we didn't have a termite problem, Rick and George went above and beyond to give advice on other potential issues with our house, which we appreciated.
Description of Work: We were concerned that we might have a termite problem in our basement, so we arranged for an inspection and diagnosis.

Dear Angie's List Member--- We are grateful for member reports. Your effort to review our visit makes it possible for other members to know the depth of our expertise and passion to be the most useful and helpful through any of our service assignments. We don't insist upon doing a general overview of a home; however, we do ask if our client would like a more in depth inspection such as the one you received. Just determining that you did not have termites was a little short of the mark in your case. The other factors that would be niches for pest propagation were there too and we knew that we could be helpful. Really, a complete pest-style inspection could be a useful service for any home owner. again, thanks for your concern and interest in our recommendations. I had evidence of a pest intrusion (items knocked over in the basement) but did not see or hear the intruder. Four days prior, another exterminator had diagnosed the problem as a rat and set rat traps. After four days of no results, I called American Pest Solutions. They arrived the next morning as scheduled. FIrst, two younger technicians came and they said they agreed the problem was a rat. They examined the property thoroughly to determine the point of entry. After a while, George Manning came to provide backup and guidance to the yonger technicians. He disagreed with their diagnosis and said I had a squirrel. He went to the attic and found an unscreened vent where the squirrel gained entry, and traced the path to where the squirrel went throug the wall to end up in the basement. They sealed the vent. Other than the false start witht he two younger techs, I was generally very happy with the diagnostic service. I was hoping they would get the squirrel out of my house. They said to simply leave the back basement door open and the squirrel would leave as soon as it smelled the fresh air. They had me sprinkle baking soda on the floor around the doorway so I would see footprints as evidence of the squirrel leaving. This approach was pretty impractical, as I needed to leave the house and could not sit for hours and wait for the squirrel to decide to leave. I tried for an hour with no results. I then borrowed a trap from a friend and was able to trap and release the squirrel myself (which I was hoping to avoid). Bottom line, I was very happy with the diagnostic service and with their fixing the point of entry. I was very impresssed with George's expertise, though the false start by the younger techs made me wonder about how well they would perform if in the future George were not on the scene for any reason. I was disappointed that they could not quickly and definitively get rid of the squirrel and that I had to do this myself. George explained that trapping is just not their approach and that they are not licensed to handle the animals. I understand this, and I trust his judgment that the squirrel would have eventually left on his own. As I mentioned, I did not have the time to wait for this approach to work and needed something more definitive. If I had it to do over again, if there were a company that would have had all the expertise and professinalism of American Pest Solutions and could have trapped the squirrel I would have used that company instead.

Dear Member--- This was a difficult one to analyze. One had to negate every possible egress that a rat would have to explore in order to gain entrance to the home. It is true that my technicians were stumped on this one situation; however, they thought well about not proceeding with rat work and called me for a consultation. I was thankful that they did not conclude with a diagnosis where there was no proof that rats had gained entry to the home. There were several droppings left by the , then unknown animal. this fecal matter was not really definitive; but did provide me with doubt that these were rat droppings. Fecal matter will often show the food matter consumed by the subject animal as fiber, meat/fat, or other. We proceeded to the attic, checked for runway pass throughs to the basement, and confirmed that a squirrel had entered the building but could not return to the point of egress, and was somewhere in the building. The story goes on from there as the customer reports. Let me repeat; our technicians were balking at a rat diagnosis, but were unsure regarding the droppings, and would not close the case without requesting a visit from me. Excellent 1st experience. They kept in touch about the schedule, arrived on time, and explained in detail their process. They "evict" the animal by placing a one-way entry system that allows animals to leave but not enter. They try to scare the animals out, but then leave and come back when all the animals have left. They work with the homeowner on this, calling to see if there is any noise or evidence of the animals. Then they come back and close the hole in addition to any others they found during the inspection. This is a much better system than setting traps and removing animals as they happen into the trap, which I don't think would work at all with squirrels. It was very expensive, but worth it. I have been dealing with raccoons and squirrels for years now and am exhausted with it. American Pest guaranteed my soffits would be pest free for a year. What a treat!
Description of Work: Provider was called to deal with squirrels in the soffits. They eliminated the squirrels as well as inspected the entire roof line and secured any entry points.

George and Ricardo are awesome. I had spiders taking over my house and back yard, due to house being empty for a few years before i bought it and active termites in my garage from my firewood (i had piles of "sawdust" under the wood). the wood is usually outside in backyard, but i was having a new patio installed and wood needed to be moved. Ricardo did an extremely thorough inspection sprayed everywhere he could get too. Our spider problem was gone over night!!! As for the termites, Ricardo advised me George would call me back. George called and spent 30 minutes on the phone with me explaining how termites survive etc. George reassured me the termites would not spread to the garage since I had the wood on a metal stand. George further explained that the termites are more than likely dead and if not they will be dead soon since they cannot survive in wood under a certain moisture amount. sure enough, no more active termites and burned the wood when I went camping. I am extremely happy with American Pest Solutions and will definitely use them again to control the spiders in and around my house!!!
Description of Work: sprayed entire house inside and outside. also sprayed garage inside and out.

Dear Member--- Your report was brief, informative and also to the point. We are grateful to those of our customers who report to Angie's List. Even a less complimentary report is thankfully received. We want to know how our public feels about our performance. We do attempt to check back with those we have serviced. That has not always been our practice; however, we do believe that consumers of our service are pleased to see how much we care. Angie's List provides a public platform of testimonials like no other. We find that our company appears on numerous other referral locations---many that we do not know exist until a prospective client lets us know how they found us. Here's the point: We can not thrive without an excellent reputation and we want to prove that every day by providing excellent, complete service with the foundation of diagnostic skills built on experience. It's great to have had a chance to link to your testimonial report. Regards, George Manning Consulting Entomologist www.pestproblemssolved.com

Description of Work: I used the Big Deal and pests control/exterminating service of American Pest Solutions. They came out and I had a rodent problem. They expected the building from the basement up and around the building to find out where the mice maybe coming in. Showed us the holes and if we wanted them to come out and fix the problem, we will have to call them back again and let them know and they would do a proposal. They poisoned it.

Thank you for your review, Member Our entire purpose for being in this pest mitigation industry is to show our clients how to live without chronic pest control(preventive maintenance). Seriously, with the exception of some required regular service visits, we attempt to eliminate the pest problem and show our clients how to proceed with structural corrections that will exclude that pest problem if that is necessary. Once we have eliminated the existing pest presence, we can provide exclusion work for an additional fee when the client requests that guaranteed work. With mice or rats, we do not exclude them while there is a remaining presence. We do not set about to alter any current movement that could effect mouse or rat activity while the kill time to conclusion is in . effect. Simply stated, we are both pest eliminators and educators. Our purpose for existing is to help solve problems and not to build business by accumulating co-dependent customers that guarantee our financial bottom line to provide us with a contractual bread and butter business that tells our public that we will do all that it takes by visiting them on a regular basis. All that we ask is allow us the opportunity to correct your pest issue through knowledge, confidence, and the desire to serve Thanks for your report and thanks for the chance to write this response thru the Angie's List response format. AMERICAN PEST SOLUTIONS 9316 S. BALTIIMORE UNIT A Chicago, IL 60617 Fax:773-902-3344 773-549-7320 Jan. 7, 2014 Dear Angie's List Member: Re: Review response to Angie’s List Dear [member name removed]: Your feed-back was helpful, and we appreciate the concern that you displayed by understanding the importance of such public reports. Our company has chosen a different path than most of the other firms practicing in our discipline. We advertise problem solving as opposed to so called preventive maintenance. We feel that when an inquirer reaches us, we must respond by promising a solution, and not an agreement to provide multiple monthly or quarterly visits. As you stated, you would consider using our firm again. Should that be your decision in the future, we would be appreciative of your confidence in our ability to take care of the problem you wish to remove or even the request that we anticipate seasonal pest encroachments that can present themselves. Certain invaders such as wasps will occur annually but will not over-winter as a colony. The newly fertile females in the Fall, will over-winter in leafy mulch, behind siding in other out of direct weather exposure; they will seek locations to start a colony in late March to mid-April. Their progeny will increase gradually and may not be noticed until late May throughout this part of the country. Steps can be taken to anticipate such events when the time is appropriate. Other invaders may be a concern too, depending on the terrain in which you reside. May I suggest that you look us up on our website and find a number of explanations for residential pest presence. Thanks to Angie & company for creating the format that allows others to choose a company highlighted on her site, angieslist.com. The initial contact with the company was fine. They sent someone out to inspect and he offered some suggestions. It was agreed the company would send us two proposals for work in a few days. We never heard from them. We called them 5 days later and they said they would send us the proposals. We never heard from them again. We called a week before Thanksgiving and reminded them that they still hadn't sent the proposal. They said they would send it that day. We never heard from them. Our rat problem continues and had we known we would never hear back, we would have moved on a month ago. We were extremely disappointed given that this company was rated so high on this site.

.Dear Member: Our intentions were to inspect your address to eliminate an existing rat problem that had invaded the property at [address removed]. Unfortunately, we saw that much of the problem at this site was coming from the neighboring property to the south as well as from the ongoing street sewer construction work. Although we proceeded to treat active burrows; our technician saw that much more needed to be done to rid the property of this pestilence. He reported that the fences on the north and south of the back yard requires rat proofing, and he also recommended rat proofing the garage, which was loaded with rat feces. We did not respond to you in a timely manner that is true. The office was unclear about approving our technician’s report of 10/10/13, feeling that I should have a look at this property to review the recommendations. While in the field accompanying one of our technicians, we drove to the site. I did see the exterior of that property. As a result of my inspection, I contacted you, [member name removed], because I felt that you should accompany us through the buildings interior. My main concern was the possibility that rats were exiting from the building’s sewer main. After exhaustive evaluation, we determined that rats had surfaced from the building’s sewer to the south, as well as from the street sewer reconstruction work still on-going. At that meeting, you and I agreed that we would proceed incrementally, correcting rat egress to the garage as well as the area of concrete that is running along side of the rear of the house where rats found harborage. Additionally we will follow up on the area where rats have dug in below the front enclosed porch. Unfortunately, at this writing on December 13, 2013, the ground is so frozen that digging in that soil adjacent to the concrete will be impractical. That will present a problem since the entire back yard is available to the preschool children housed in the building. We are correcting the garage condition today as well as re-inspecting the front of the building below the porch. Our work is constant throughout Chicago. There are times, like this, when more heads than one should discuss and agree on procedures. Money is to be considered in rat correction work, so correct diagnosis is super important. Our company set your work aside for me and with your persistence, rightfully so, put me on the case. I hope this will end with your satisfaction that we will do right by you in concluding satisfactorily. Regards, George Manning Consulting Entomologist

After calling for an estimate, I got an almost immediate return call from the owner. He identified our problem bugs over the phone and gave an estimated price. He spent a long time on the phone with me, approx 15-20 minutes and was very helpful, providing ways to handle the bugs on my own. I made an appointment and an exterminator showed up, early. He sprayed over the course of the next hour. Since then, we have not had any bugs at all. Literally have not seen one. The carpet beatles are no longer eating wool clothes. So far, I am extremely pleased with the quality of service provided. My only complaint is that someone should have told me that the bedroom would be uninhabitable for a week, even with the windows open. If I had known that, I would have moved my clothes out of there in advance. That is why I gave professionalism a B instead of A. For a week we had to move into the guest bedroom and slept on the futon. Not a huge problem, but the chemicals used are nasty. They made me and the wife a little dizzy and direct contact with the most heavily sprayed areas was not possible.

Very polite. Walked around the house, found several mouse holes and showed them to me. He did miss one hole under the porch (we had work done and they found it). Looked around inside to see how they were moving in the house and where they were active. They also checked under the stove to see how they were climbing up and swept up back there. Baited extensivly (it seemed to me) and told me what to expect. He did not push their mouseproofing services on me.

Dear Member: We appreciate getting the chance to answer your review. The fact that you took the time to send Angie's List your review says a great deal about the value that you place upon the importance of getting a creditable and responsible company to serve as the solution to your pest problem. You had the confidence to seek assistance with correcting the locations that we felt needed correction. It's good to learn that an additional opening to the home's interior was located by the individual that you retained. I would like to add that if we had provided that service, we would have placed the entire building under an unconditional one year guarantee that no further mouse problem could recur. Had a location been missed, once we completed the mouse exclusion work, you would not have received a service fee for the call-back. When we do exclusion work, it is always after the pest problem has been eliminated. It is at that juncture that value can be placed upon exclusion work. The annual warranty against recurrence can be renewed annually. When one elects extended warranties, we are obliged to inspect the entire exterior surroundings of the building as well as it's interior. That service would be provided for a nominal fee Let us know how things are. We may call you just to see that all is well. Regards, George Manning Consulting Entomologist.

We purchased a "special" from Angie's list for Spider removal on a house up to 1800 sq. ft. The appointment was for 8:00 AM. The man finally showed up at 10:30. He did the required spraying, and the problem seemed to be gone. Two weeks later I received a bill marked paid, however it stated that a follow up fee would apply after 3 weeks. I called and Gabriella told me that if we needed them to come out again, it would cost an additional $125, and only then would they guarantee their work. I mentioned to her that we had seen some baby spiders in the basement, and it had not yet been 3 weeks, so I expected them to come out at no cost and respray the basement. She said that it didn't matter about the time, it would still be an additional $125 because this was their policy. When I complained, Gabriella said that the service man said that we had a "large house". In realty our house is around 950 square ft. I feel as if I have been cheated by American Pest Solutions, and will not call them again.

They took a sample and when the entomologist looked at the sample, they found that they were termites. George Manning came out for a second consultation for another $250. Member Comments: They treated for the wrong bug and never offered a refund for the treatment that was incorrect. George Manning came out for a second consultation and my husband said "we got $100 worth of information for $250." They also took a flashlight of ours, promised to return it and six months later, it has yet to be returned. Share on Band of Neighbors: Yes When I looked at the specimen left on my desk, I called you folks immediately to tell you that those alates (sexed wing forms), were termite swarmers and not ants. Because of my haste to correct the misdiagnosed presentation, I had not looked at a field report that was turned in to the office for processing; instead visited you and billed for a complete termite inspection. The $250 is enclosed with this letter of apology. This event was not explained to our office, who billed by receipt of the work orders. As regards the wrong pest identification, Lloyd the senior technician was accompanied by Jose, a trainee. Lloyd had handled termite treatment but was not the right person to identify those insects. No one realized that he had not received training, and he assumed he knew the insects identity. I had hoped that we could get that embarrassment behind us, but the double billing came forward to draw my attention too. You may recall, Kim, that you wanted me to revisit your home when your husband Jeff could be present. It was then that your husband and of course, you received the “$100”,worth of information. At that visit, you had already followed my advice by calling the nationally prominent termite company that performed the initial termite treatment. We all know that they failed to stop the activity. You lost confidence in them but I told you that they were obligated to carry out their warranty. When [member name removed], and, Jose, our trainee, and me went through your basement level for our re-inspection, you asked me what more you could do to prevent termite occurrence or recurrence. We discussed possible interior treatment of the stud plates throughout where one could apply Tim-bor, a borate salt registered for interior termite treatment. As I recall, you wanted me to provide you with a cost estimate, but I was hesitant to interfere with the other company’s responsibility. At this time, may I offer you a springtime termite inspection at no fee that can help you to believe your termite treatments are performing well now? I am truly sorry for our performance. If it will comfort you, I am considered tops in my field as a consulting entomologist, and not because I say so. Please look up consulting entomologists and you will find me at the top. I am truly concerned about reputation and hope that my letter will ease your doubts. Regards, George Manning Consulting Entomologist

They did a great job. The technician said it may have to be a two step process, but it only took one application. I am unsure if their product was green, but they made sure they were precise with the application to keep my kids safe. The tech was friendly and knowledgeable. Getting the appointment scheduled was easy and they showed up on time.
Description of Work: We had an ant problem and they eradicated them. This was an inside application.

The technician was nice able to find a possible entryway for the mice. They did not do the patch work on the area. They did okay work. The technician was 30 minutes late, but called to let us know. He was at our house for about 30 minutes. I feel like I did not get a very thorough inspection. There was a problem with their price quotes. They quoted me one price and wanting to charge me another. They wanted to charge me $250, and the quote range I originally received over the phone was 25%-30% lower than that cost they wanted to charge. I ended up paying $125. I called to dispute the amount, and they were accommodating to that. I would suggest getting as clear as you can estimate for the work.
Description of Work: We had some mice issues and they came out, looked around, and put out some bait traps.

Ricardo was polite and professional. He explained where spiders like to make their webs/nests and showed us a few examples in our home. We were being overrun by spiders and had even been bitten a few times while sitting outdoors near the side of our home. One of our family members had a severe reaction to a spider bite, so we captured one of the suspects in a glass jar the day prior so we could find out if it was a Brown Recluse. Ricardo took a photo of it with his phone and sent it to his boss. Turned out it was a Hunter spider, but it was good to know what we were dealing with. Our house was sprayed around the outside perimeter and around all the windows and under the gutters and eves. Also, he sprayed inside around all the baseboards on both levels. The odor was faint and went away in a couple of hours. The good news is WE HAVEN'T SEEN A SPIDER OR CENTIPEDE SINCE!! We rest easier now and feel it was well worth the money to get this problem under control. The visit to the Urgent Aid Center and prescription of antibiotics needed when our family member had the bad reaction, cost approximately the same and getting rid of the problem. We will do it again next year if needed, and will call American Pest Solutions to do the job.

Dear [member name removed]--- You report is appreciated and we are thankful for this feedback. Our thanks also go to Angie's List for providing this format to publicize your results and your sentiments. Spiders are always present in a home; both inside and out. It is when you have such an overrun that bites are more likely to occur. All bites will cause a reaction; some inflammation and pain to some degree depending on the individual bitten. The area around the bite will become necrotic and after healing will often leave a tiny spot where skin will not grow. This will be difficult to notice in most cases; however, the victim will always point to the exact location as a reminder of the experience. We do not intend to magnify this chance occurrence. I have received bites while planting a garden. the results have been itching, slight stinging feeling for up to a day and then I forgot about the incident. Most people will have varying degrees of this happening. Not all spiders will deliver the same amount of their venom. Both centipedes and spiders inject their numbing venom. It is delivered with the bite to cause another arthropod to become immobile so that the spider can withdraw the body fluids from the host victim; leaving the prey absent of vital fluids and , of course deceased. No one wants to be bitten; however, the chance of receiving a bite is rare and mostly not an extreme inconvenience. Yes, recluse spiders are a serious problem, but if present in a home do not seek out humans or their pets. Again, the bite will be a chance occurrence. The same statement is true when referring to centipedes. They are not looking for a mammal to bite. What can be so called, "poetic justice, is that spiders will catch centipedes and centipedes will also victimize spiders. Maybe this has been to much of a response to your very welcome report; however, we try to enlighten the Angie's List seekers for helpful guidance, and never want to alarm them---just stating the facts as we know them. Our home inspector for our purchase had been concerned about some possible termite damage. We contacted American Pest Solutions and they came out to take a look at the house and were able to coordinate with our schedule. The inspector did a comprehensive review and he explained what the cause was of the damage thought to be termites. It gave us piece of mind and I would definitely use them again.

Dear [member name removed]--- We understand pricing for what we do. We are unlike most other companies in that we guarantee results in one, no more than, at the most, several follow-ups. After any such assignment comes a guarantee. No one is asked to sign a monthly or quarterly contract. Thanks for the report. It always helps us to explain our point of view. Since you never used our service, and because you feel that we are too"pricey", you will receive a 20% discount with your next order. Please save this report or mention it so that we can check the information that you report. Best wishes, George Manning Consulting Entomologist www.pestproblemssolved.com

This is an overdue report, but I want to make sure the mice problem to my house is solved. We have an issue of mice come into the house during the fall season. I placed the glue trap in the basement ceiling and captured about 2 to 4 mice every season. After my trap captured a family of 6 mice (mommy mice and 5 babies) one year, I finally decided to take care of the problem for good. I got the name from Angie?s List and the first inspectors came to my house agree with my suspicion that although there is no visible entry point into the house, the area under my backyard patio could be the entry points for the mice. Because the area is covered by the patio flooring, the inspectors placed plenty of baits in the area where he found mice droppings and ask me to call them back once I removed the patio flooring so they could do an inspection to the covered area. Since my patio deck has seemed a better day, I decided to replace the deck (but keep the frame). The inspectors came back after the deck boards got removed and gave me an estimate and an agreed date to seal the area; the inspector also place more baits after noticed that the baits placed previously got eaten by mice. The sealing crew showed up on time, placed cement mud and galvanized wire mesh to seal the gap under the sidings around the house. They also discovered a half inch hole under the chimney overhang (where previously inaccessible due to deck board cover) which they sealed it off with the wire mesh. I filled the hole with pest proof expanding foam to prevent cold draft during the winter. The whole sealing job took about 5 hours in one of the hottest day in late summer but the crew had good attitude and spirit. They also show me where the hole under the chimney overhand is. Different staff came out each time for inspection and estimate but they show up on time, very polite and professional. The inspector answered my questions and very knowledgeable about the type of pest in my neighborhood. It has been over one year since the seal job was completed and I have not seen any activity of mice in the basement ceiling area. The project seems to be a success and I keep my finger cross that is the case. Overall I am pleased with the American Pest Solution. The only complaint I have is that I get charged the full inspection every time they came out for follow up inspection and estimate. I think it will be more reasonable to offer discount on the follow up, especially since I hire them for the major project. Other than that, I am happy with my choice and I?ll recommend them to my friends.
Description of Work: Inspect the house for possible entry point, place baits, seal the gap around the house and the possible entry points.
