Description of Work: I had requested a routine furnace check for the start of winter and an estimate on the cost of replacing our A/C unit. Mike Williams had taken over Central Illinois Air customers when the owners retired, and we just continued with them. The same guy who had been doing our service continued on, so we didn't think twice about asking them out to check the furnace and give us an estimate on the AC. I was surprised when they insisted that they would send out two people, a service technician and a sales rep. The sales rep arrived first, and from the moment he came in he was pushing and agenda of a whole system replacement. He took forever to walk me through all the different guarantees offered by the company, each printed on an awards certificate template (there must have been about ten)--and all the while he kept pointing out figures for a whole system replacement. I was as clear and blunt as I could be that we did not have the money to replace the furnace at the same time. He kept angling back to the whole system and the various discounts that could be offered if we had the work done before the end of October. All I wanted was a price on replacing the AC,s o we could begin saving toward that goal. Then, the service technician arrived. The sales rep insisted on showing him the furnace. They closed a door that is always propped open when they were down there talking. The sales rep came back up, went back to his lengthy exposition on the whole system replacement and the benefits of getting it done quickly, in October. The service technician then came upstairs with (lo and behold!) some bad news about my furnace. He claimed to be showing me a crack that would allow carbon monoxide into the house. He said he would have to turn off the gas to my furnace for my family's safety, that this was required by law, and sadly there was really nothing I could do except replace the system. He was very consoling, especially given the age of the unit (ten years). I signed this "legal paperwork", which turned out to be simply printed on Mike Williams stationary, and ushered the two gentlemen out of my house as quickly and politely as possible. I then had a certified heating and cooling technician come out and take a look. He could not find ANYTHING wrong with the furnace. He said it was like new, not even a hint of corrosion. Moreover, he said that if there was a crack where the technician said it would not have been able to allow carbon monoxide into the house, because that is not the part of the furnace the involves emissions (I am paraphrasing, because I cannot remember the technical detail). Mike Williams might do clean and competent work, but I will never know, because I felt completely worked over by the pressure tactics. They may win some, but they just lost one When we do get out AC replaced it will not be with this company.

Description of Work: Had Mike Williams Plumbing come out to check out A/C that was not cooling well. They serviced A/C unit and charged freon that was low. They sold us a warranty on the service that if it needed to recharged in 90 days that it would be at no charge. Thirty days later, A/C was no longer cooling, so we called to have them come recharge and check it for leaks. The person who took the phonecall said that it would be a couple hundred dollars for them to come back out, then I explained that we had purchased the warranty to cover that. She was unable to find that in our file and had to have a supervisor call me back. When the supervisor called back, he told me the same thing. I had my copy of the paperwork in front of me and had to read it to him. He then asked how much we had paid for the first call and I told him. He then agreed that they would come out and do a leak check and recharge per the agreement. The work that they did was fine, the technicians were personable and professional. We found that the A-coil was riddled with small leaks and would need to be replaced. The estimate from Mike Williams was about double the other two estimates that we got.

I told the Mike Williams technician that I had diagnosed the problem and that I possess supplies of all types of Freon, all the gauges and vacuum pumps necessary to repair the air-conditioning units. Further, I have had a long history with successfully repairing heating and air-conditioning units. He insisted on inspecting the entire system that I had been servicing for the last 25 years. When he was finished inspecting he told me Mike Williams was a fixed-price operator and that the total cost would be $1826, but he could do the blower fan motor only for $1156. I said that's outrageous. I can buy the Rheem four-speed motor for $379 on the Internet and I can purchase a comparable three speed motor locally during the day for about $100. He said that's our price and I'm sticking to it. I knew he could do the job in two hours and I could do the job in four hours. While I desperately needed the unit to be operative since it was 95° and I would be out of town the next day, I knew I was about to be ripped off. The first thing that came to my mind was this is an enormous scam for senior citizens. Ultimately, I paid $110 for the service call to Mike Williams and called Allied heating and plumbing. By 10 PM, the unit was working for a total cost of $503. I stayed with the Allied technician for the two hours required and he was highly professional. With Mike Williams I could never talk to a technician before he arrived. Having the model number and serial number of the unit, I wanted to make certain that the technician had the appropriate motor on his truck. When the Allied technician called, I told him I suspected that the motor was ¾ horsepower and asked if he had one on the truck for a Rheem unit. He checked his truck and then stopped at the shop before coming to my house adding a ¾ horsepower motor to his inventory. Ultimately, the 3/4 horsepower was required. I have discussed the situation with numerous friends knowledgeable and heating and air-conditioning repair. Most said emphatically Mike Williams will rip you off. Mike Williams is known for adding unnecessary work to the job to pad the bill, but the average customer does not have the knowledge to challenge the technician from Mike Williams. As an added benefit, my wife gave me huge kudos for having the mental toughness to pay the $110 and tell the Mike Williams technician to walk, especially when the temperature was 95° and I would be out of town the next day.
Description of Work: Replace blower fan ¾ hp motor Rheem Unit -- $1156 Mike Williams vs. $503 Allied For almost 30 years, I have been repairing heating and air-conditioning units relying on my extensive hands-on skills and the knowledge acquired in earning two mechanical engineering degrees from UIUC. On Tuesday, July 31, 2012, while working in my office, I noticed that the blower motor was squeaking when it turned on. At 6 PM, with the temperature at 95°, I realized that the blower fan motor had failed. I opened up the furnace and manually rotated the squirrel cage fan noting a high-pitched squeak. Given that I would be out of town on Wednesday, I needed the repair Tuesday night because I was desperate and could not wait for the next day to purchase the appropriate motor. I went to the phone book and called Mike Williams. They showed up within two hours. What transpired for the next hour was disgusting and insulting.

After talking to people that I know, I found that this was way too expensive and Easterday Plumbing would have done the same work for a lot less. And, I could kick myself for getting involved in their 'monthly plan'. And, as soon as I can, I will get out of the plan, and never call them again.I do feel that they did quality work, but with what I was charged, it just isn't worth it.
Description of Work: I got a flyer in the mail from Mike Williams asking me to take advantage of a $69 AC Check. They came out and said that I had a gas leak at my water heater, and I needed a new length of pipe. And, they wanted to replace the water heater, but I said that I would check around. He finally checked the outside AC unit, and the technician said it was ok. In order to get a 'reduced' price for the 'necessary' work on the replacement lines, they had me sign up for a monthly service that I must pay for at least six months.

I have used them for at least 10 years. We are on a maintenance program with them and pay them a yearly fee for three service checks. If something goes wrong we get a discount on parts and labor too. A couple of years ago our sump pump went out on Christmas Eve and they came immediately so I can't say enough good things about them. They are extremely clean and put booties on when they come in your house. They are polite and have all the answers for you on things you can do. They are very professional and are always there when they say they will be. This company calls you in advance prior to their appointment and I will use them again in the future.

If you use Mike Williams Heating and Cooling... beware of the extra charges. They usually start with something small and with each progressive visit, find more and more things wrong, even if they don't exist.
Description of Work: We used Mike Williams for several years after we moved to Springfield IL. We had a contract with them to check and clean our furnace every spring and fall. They came and did the work as scheduled. But the more they came, the more they kept finding wrong, and were continually trying to "upcharge" the service call. They kept telling us we needed a new furnace. We knew ours was aging, but it was not emitting CO2 and told them we planned to keep it as long as possible. On their next visit the service man was so insistent that he threatened to shut off our gas if we didn't get a new furnace. When my husband threw him out of the house, he threatened to call the gas company. We told him to go ahead, because we knew the furnace was adequate and he was trying to hard sell us a new furnace. The Gas company never showed up. By asking friends, we found a new and honest heating and cooling man. He told us what we already suspected. That our furnace was old, not very efficient, but in fine running order.

I would NEVER recommend Mike Williams Plumbing to anyone. I do not know how they are still even in business when you have friendly, reliable, and honest local businesses out there! We still don't have the problem fixed, but I can tell you that we have called about 5 different companies in the area and they have all brought their equiptment out and tried their hardest to figure out a solution to the problem! AND ALL OF THEM DID IT AT NO CHARGE! Please let your friends know that Mike Williams is a scam! Call around to the local service men in the area!
Description of Work: Mike Williams was called when our sewage drain backed up and we were having some plumbing issues. I had explained to them on the phone what was going on. They were the 3rd company that had come out and took a look and tried to correct this problem. When I spoke to them on the phone setting up the initial meeting I had explained to them everything that the other plumbers had done and what was being recommended. We needed special equipment and I had explained to them what was needed. They said that they would be happy to send someone out and check out the problem and that they could handle this. The representative came out later that next day, and simply went downstairs and looked at the pipes. He then told us that there was nothing that he could do at this time and that we needed to get out pipes water jetted, but that they didn't offer that service but could call in a company that would. The Mike Williams employee then gave us an estimate of the cost through this other company. It was EXTREMELY high! Costing us around $895! He then told us that there was a $49.95 charge just for having them come to the house and review what work was needed. Later that day I called the company that Mike Williams was going to use, just to see what their estimate was. After speaking with this company they estimated that end of day cost would be $200-$250 max! Mike Williams was UPCHARGING this service over $600!!!! So not only did they not fix anything or do anything, they were trying to rip us off!

A disappointing experience to say the least.
Description of Work: I have a small, one person business in a building that was a former residence. All the heating and air conditioning components in the building are residential grade rather than commercial grade. When I called their office to schedule a fall check up of my furnace, I explained my situation and was told I would still qualify for the residential rate ($82.00). Two service technicians showed up at my office and sat in their truck in my parking lot for quite some time. I then received a call from their office indicating I would have to pay an additional $90.00 as they now considered my location "commercial". I explained to the person on the phone that I had explained all this to the scheduler when I initially called but they still declined to come in and inspect my unit even though they had already made the trip and were sitting in my parking lot. I declined their service. I called Tom's Heating & AC and they are doing a residential service call for me for $75.00

He did a great job. He was with his son, which we liked that they were doing it together. They took their time making sure that everything was right. We are finishing our basement and moving some air vents. They even took time to go into the basement and look at that. We thought the price was going to be more than it was. We liked that he came out that day because most people wouldn?t come the same day. The price was pretty good because that?s all it was. We would definitely use them again.
