I was a loyal customer for over 2 years and $1000 on fence repair within that time, but after 3 calls for an estimate due to the storm on Monday I was told in a very rude way that "...we just had a storm and we can't worry about 1 existing customer..." A great way to keep a customer. I understand that they may have quite a workload, but to be unresponsive, rude and an overall lack of professionalism is just not good business. I hope all that new work you now have will make up for the loss of a loyal customer.

I got the initial call on a Monday that the customer had storm damage to a fence that a competitor had installed and would not service. I explained to the customer that nearly 300 storm damage calls came in and that we were handling them on a first come, first served basis. I then received and answered a call on Wednesday evening at 10 pm on my personal cell phone in which the person was demanding, rude, and made an offensive comment using profane language. We chose not to subject our company to this type of situation.

I am very happy with my new fencing. The design was not one of their standard offerings, but a style they made for the Flower and Garden show. Based on the picture I took they replicated the design, scaling it to the lower height I wanted. Ross, our salesman, was really helpful in modifying our gate design and prompt with his visits and estimates. The crew was great! They were careful of the plantings during demo and installation, and asked questions which ensured that I got the design I was expecting. The mess was minimal and they did a great job of cleanup. The job was estimated at 1day and took 2 1/2. I am glad that the crew took the time to a good job rather than a fast one, and appreciate that they stayed with it until it was finished.

As stated above, we've paid Freeman Fence about $530 and now they won't return our calls. I've even called the owner. I think its fair to say at this point they've STOLEN this money from us. It has been over two weeks since we paid them. We've been able to reach an answering service and its always the same thing "they'll call you tomorrow... or they'll call you soon" etc. We first contacted them the first week of April so the whole process has been slow and we've been patient but our patience has run out. If you actually want a fence and don't want your money taken from you DON'T HIRE THEM! I am hoping this post will inspire someone over there to either build us a fence now or at least return or money. Update 6/30/13 : Thankfully, we have now been refunded. The owner ended the contract because he was displeased we wrote of this on Angie's list. Again - lacking professionalism. He said our expectations were too high and did not seem to understand when we explained that he and his company set our expectations. We wouldn't expect a call "that evening" or "tomorrow" if we weren't told to expect one. YOU set the standard. He basically told us every other company will treat us as badly and that we'd learn. We already had 2 other estimates at that point - one lower and one willing to match his price- and the process has been smooth with the new company. The ironic part of all of this is that we aren't even in a hurry because we already have a fence and we are just looking to upgrade it. Good luck if you reach out to Freeman Fence, Angie's List readers!
Description of Work: Freeman Fence gave us an estimate (that was somewhat high) but we thought we'd get what we paid for. Unfortunately, we've now paid them about $530 and they have DISAPPEARED with our money. So we our out 500+ dollars and have no fence and no one will return our calls.

We strive to provide a high quality product in a timely manner. Before we even received a complaint, I had talked to the customer on two different occasions within two weeks of the date of a signed contract and deposit. After giving the customer an installation date, both parties agreed that we would be unable to meet their expectations, and their deposit was refunded. During our season, our normal installation for jobs is in the two to four week range. This did not meet their expectations.

Install was fine. Follow up and payment was horrible. Forgot some of our order and won't call back or bring out our product. Even the owner won't commit to bringing our stuff out. The worst part is that they took their 2nd/final payment of appx. $2000 WITHOUT FINISHING THE JOB which is in complete contrast to the contract. Full payment is due upon completion. The job isn't finished and I NEVER authorized a 2nd credit card payment. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER use them!
Description of Work: I regret selecting them. We ordered two different styles of fences both with upgraded caps. They forgot to bring the caps for the 2nd fence. After 2 phone calls to the rep, an email to the office and another call to the owner we STILL don't have the caps and it 4+ weeks later! Their estimate was appx. $100 higher than another company I was familiar with but I decided to use them anyway. BIG mistake! Timely and thorough estimate. Fast and decent installation. Follow up horrendous!!!

We upgraded the post caps at no additional charge. The upgraded caps were back-ordered, so we replaced the caps as soon as we received them from our manufacturer. It took nearly 3 weeks to get the caps due to manufacturing issues, but everything has been corrected.

I'm extremely pleased with the results. Roger came by to quote the fence installation price. I had a few other quotes, most lower, but one higher. I chose Freeman based on the quality of the work I'd seen in the neighborhood and the clear cedar that they use to build the fence with. All of the board used in construction are clear of knots, which makes the fence more attractive and is also a sturdier product. The entire fence is built on-site with no pre-assembled panels. Amazingly, they put the fence up in about 6.5 hours! They were very careful around our plantings and when the day was done the work site was immaculate. Highly recommended!

I'm happy to write another great review for Freeman Fence. They did a fence for me last year and I loved it -- design, quality, and great service. Had them do another small fence with gate and arbor. They said it would be done within a week or less of estimate and they were right on the money. They did a great job, it looks terrific. No pre-assembled sections, they do all the work on site. Their wood is top quality cedar with no knots and design is outstanding. Very professional, friendly, efficient and punctual. They are the best and I'd recommend them to anyone!

I never invited them out but they sent out the joint utility locating service without ever even notifying me and without a contract. I didn't have a contract for them to do anything for me. I had a very bad experience with them. It was just totally inept. I was fully intending on hiring them, except I needed a certificate of insurance. I specifically mentioned, in writing, that I would call JULI out because I wanted to be there. They completely ignored that. They lost my business.

I called Freeman Fence on a Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. I wanted to leave a message for a return call during the work week. Roger Freeman asked the phone!!! He was out the next day to give estimate. This was the middle of February. We knew he could not install the new fence until warmer weather. On the first warm day in April, the Freeman crew was onsite. Within a day and half, the fence was installed. Crew was professional, cleaned up the yard and took away the trash. We would use Freeman again without blinking an eye.

I was satisfied with the work of the people who came out to do the work. But, it took them an ordinate amount of time to return my call and get out with estimate and once I got the estimates, it took another ordinate amount of time to get back with me. On the fence post, they still haven't given me the cap. It's like a 13-foot pole and they never brought the cap back that should be at the top of it. Their gates are fine but their customer service and their retuning phone calls is a "C".

We first contacted Freeman Fence on July 19, 2012 to invite them to bid on our project. After several attempts to reach them, some calls weren't returned, we made direct contact with the owner of the company who informed us that the representative for our area was away on leave but that he would try to get someone out to meet with us and provide us with an estimate. We had to contact the owner again to follow up. We persisted and tried to remain patient since Freeman Fence was our first choice for the job based on their reputation. Finally, we were able to schedule an appointment for August 6, 2012. The rep for our area had returned to work by that time. As I recall, he was prompt for the appointment, professional, and appeared knowledgeable. He took all the necessary measurements, explained our options for replacing both the wood privacy fence as well as the wrought iron and chain link fence, and showed us the available fencing styles. By the end of the appointment we had pretty much decided which model to go with for each yard. The rep indicated that he would get back to us in 2 or 3 days with an estimate. Despite the difficulty in reaching the company and scheduling an appointment, we were leaning towards contracting with Freeman to do the job if the price was right compared to the other companies based on our experience with the rep during the appointment and the company's reputation. That was the last we heard from him. He never followed through with sending us a quote on the job. We contacted the company again. Apparently the owner misunderstood the message we left because when he returned our call he wanted to know when wanted to schedule the job. I informed him that we never received a quote and that if we didn't hear from the rep within the next 2 days he needn't bother sending it given how much time had already transpired. That was our last contact with the company.
Description of Work: We invited Freeman Fence to bid on the replacement of our existing wood privacy fence with a new wood privacy fence in our back yard as well as the replacement of our existing wrought iron and chain link fences in our front yard with a different model wrought iron fence all around the front yard.

The price was reasonable for what they did. They worked through some very hot weather. They got it done on time and in budget. We chose them because they were local and belonged to Angie's List, and they were willing to do two different styles because we had two different needs. So far as I know it was a fair price; I didn’t wander too far out because we needed it done. They were willing to do it and we liked the designs.

We called several companies to bid on the project and Freeman Fence (Roger Freeman) came as the middle bid. What impressed us the most was that he was knowledgeable, responsive and professional in the bidding process. In addition to including DRD, his services also had in place that they would secure the permit and the project would be overseen and inspected by owner and operator , Roger Freeman. We decided to use Freeman Fence based on this criteria. Please note that sometimes you are rated on how well you do, however I find it is more important how you respond when thing go wrong. There was a few errors in the construction process. Obvious we had concerns, but Roger Freeman and his crew promptly listened to our concerns and completely corrected these issues. That is the sign of great organization with excellent leadership. Roger Freeman takes pride in his business and it shows. We highly recommend them and will use them in the future.

It took several phone calls before anyone called me back. The salesman that finally called came up with many ridiculous excuses for not calling. He finally did come over and gave me an estimate for my fence.I have seen many of their fences so I knew the quality was very good and decided to hire them. They came on time and the fence looks great. The only additional comment I would make is that after the fence was put in no one bothered to call and see if I was happy with their services. I really do like the fence and would use them again. Just be prepared that it will take some effort to get their initial attention.

Jim from Freeman Fence came out to give us an estimate. Their price, construction time and delivery seemed fair so we agreed to the terms and signed a contract for them to begin work. The fence was to enclose our back yard and going to cost $3,615.00. The workman & foreman arrived on time and began work the day on which we had agreed, The workman finished later on that day and it SEEMED as though the job was well done. Now this is where the horror story begins. During the heavy rains on August 18 & 19 2012, we started getting water in our basement. While in itself was causing us great concern, we never imagined that it could have anything to do with our new fence. We called a 24 hour plumbing service (which we also found on Angies list) and they came out late at night and found that the water was indeed coming in from outside of the house and not due to any leak or breakage within. The plumbers came back equipped with telescoping cameras and other devices to track down the source of the water. What they found was that the placement of the fence post next to the house had broken an underground drain pipe. It was not clear whether the pipe was broken when the hole was dug or when the post was pounded into place, What was clear was that the pipe which drained the water from the downspout around the house was blocked both by the fencepost and the concrete they poured while installing the fencepost. We received an estimate from the plumbing company of $2,850.00 to fix the damage caused by Freeman Fence. Since we were NOT covered for any of this by our homeowners insurance, we contacted Freeman Fence and explained our problem with the expectation that as a reputable company they would return and fix whatever damage they had caused. That DIDN'T happen. After leaving the salesman, Jim two voicemails with no return call on 8/24/12 & 8/25/12 and calling the office and leaving a voice mail requesting a call back ASAP, still with no response, I finally spoke with Connie on 9/4/12. who said she would have someone call me back. The owner of the company, Roger called and said they would come out and patch the pipe. When I asked him about the Village permit he needed to get before they start digging up my sidewalk, I was told "he was just going to patch the pipe as a favor, and they were not about to pay any additional permit fees nor were they going to replace the broken pipe or anything that incurred cost on their part". We were on our own and on the hook for a $2,850.00 repair bill for damages that were clearly their fault and not ours. When I spoke with Roger again all he said was "They don't have x-ray vision and per the contract they are not responsible." Really? Are you kidding me?? The owner of the company isn't willing to do anything other than to make rude comments??? Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this why companies carry insurance? For accidents? A measure of a company is not what they do when things are good. A true measure of a company is how they respond to a bad situation. I would NOT recommend Freeman Fence to anyone seeing that this is how they do business!!!!

Response from Freeman Fence
We value our reputation greatly, so please let me respond to this complaint. We completed a first-class vinyl fence project for the member in the amount of $3615. We were diligent in every aspect of the job. We met with the customers, presented them with material choices, and a written estimate. They agreed and signed a contract. We contacted J.U.L.I.E., the underground locating company to make sure all the utilities were marked to ensure the safety of our workers and to not damage any properly located utilities. All proper permits were obtained and all work was inspected and signed off by the Village of Westchester. The job was completed and we were paid. We are insured with workmen's compensation and liability insurance. Our fence company is no different than other companies in our industry. We clearly spell out the scope of the work and what is our responsibility and the customer's. We make it clear that, other than for Com Ed, Comcast, AT&T, Nicor, etc., we cannot be held responsible for damage to property underground that is not made known to us, nor will our insurance cover it. There is no way for us to know what the homeowner or builder may have put under the ground. Therefore, it is stated on our contract that the "purchaser agrees that the company will not be held responsible or liable for any damage of any nature to underground obstructions". We have contacted the village of Westchester and they have made it clear that any drain tiles or drainage from downspouts into the sewer is illegal. It's unfortunate that the homeowner is sometimes unaware of obstacles in their ground, but then how could we? As a courtesy at the time we offered to pull the post and concrete where the clay tile had collapsed so that the repair could be done. We offered this at no charge but our offer was refused. We asked that this complaint be expunged from our record.

Our rating would have been an overall excellent, except we went for two periods of time where we could not get anyone to respond to our questions and the fence was not even started on the first scheduled date, with no call to explain why they didn't show up. However, the work was excellent, the personnel great and the price reasonable. I would recommend them to anyone, but still don't understand the lack of responsiveness!!!

The guy didn't show up for the initial appointment. I later received a call stating that the appointment had accidentally been written on the page for 08/02/2012 instead of 07/02/2012. We then scheduled an appointment for the following day. Of the five estimates that I got for my fence, Freeman was the most expensive. This is probably due to their use of clear, knot free wood of the highest grade and stainless steel fasteners. The guy made sure to tell me that they were the only company who could get this high grade wood. True or not I didn't appreciate his attitude and boastfulness. The added expense wasn't worth it to me.

I emailed the company on Friday, 8-3-12 expressing interest in a free estimate. Jim called me back on Monday, 8-6-12 and we arranged an appointment. He came out on time and drew up a quote for me on the spot. I still had one more company scheduled to quote me. As it turns out he and Freeman were quoting the exact same product. It would make for an easy comparison but I needed to confirm a few details with Jim to make sure I was comparing apples to apples. On 8-16-12 I emailed him with a few questions about his quote. I was anxious to make a decision but I didn't hear back from him until 8-22-12. The delay in his response to my questions was a deciding factor to go with someone else. Up until that point, my husband and I were very pleased with him. He had the best price, too.
