I called Brian of Grey Tree on a Thurs/Fri, after having purchased $400 of Angie Deal coupons worth of tree service from them at half price, to get an estimate of doing some serious pruning of 2 or 3 large trees on our property. The trees were all well taller than our two story house and provided lots of routes to the roof for neighborhood squirrels given that we'd never had them cut back since moving in some 20 years ago. Brian said he'd swing by over the weekend and get us an estimate. We missed his message on Sunday evening initially, but returned his call Tuesday morning and thought he'd said they could get out to do the work later in the following week. The crew surprised my wife a bit when she returned home that same Thursday from shopping to find a tree/limb/sawdust blitzkrieg underway; but I believe she said they were finished and cleaned up by about 3:30, well before I got home from work and even would have known they'd been there.....except for our much skinnier trees. Brian was even gracious enough to take down an additonal much smaller tree that I'd asked about (and could tackle myself but had procrastinated about for quite some time) at no extra cost. There was also no extra charge for the entertainment value my wife expressed about sitting in her second story office watching the men acrobat through the trees on ropes with anxious moments of branches being lopped off (that she could not see were well guide rope controlled below). Perhaps I should stay home the next time....I only got the bill :-(
Description of Work: Three large trees, about 35+ years old, 40 ft tall were pruned of dead wood and branches. One smaller, maybe 15 foot, 5/6" trunk was cut and stump ground down. All debris was removed from the yard.

First, I had gotten two of Angie's Big Deal with this company where I paid $100 for $200 worth of services.Rick called within 1 day of purchasing. He asked what I was looking to do - I described that I had several large stumps that needed to be removed and a few trees I needed cut down or topped. We made an appointment for him to come out and give me an estimate within 3 days for the work. The day of the appointment, he was early. Gave me what work would be covered with just the coupons I had purchased as well as giving me what the total of the entire job would be with the coupons if I got everything done.Needless to say, I wanted everything done. He said he would call back with the day he could get us on the schedule - with that being said, we only gave him a couple of days that we were available to have the work done. His crew was there within one week - the mutual day we scheduled. Again, they showed up early. They followed the directions to the letter, cleaned up, and my husband and I couldn't be happier. From start to finish, Gray's did an AMAZING job and I would hire them again in a heartbeat.

I just purchased a house in Wheaton. There were trees in the front of the house and garage that obstructed windows and the path to the house. There was also a birch that needed one of its trunks and dead branches removed. The biggest concern was a huge tree in the back of the house that had a cracked trunk. I saw the special that Gray's Tree Service had recently, and, after purchasing it, called Gray's right away. I got a call soon after and Rick arranged to come out to see the trees the next day. He was very pleasant and professional and agreed that the trees I wanted removed in front of the yard was a good idea. He also said he could clean up the birch. When he examined what he said was a very large, very tall cherry tree, he said it would be best to have it removed, that it looked like the tree was dead or dying. He quoted me a price, deducted the special's coupons and, while it was quite a bit of money, it was worth it. Rick's crew came out the next day and, in under 3 hours, completed the work. The men were quick and professional. They cleaned up everything. I did have some doubts about taking the big tree down, but Carl the foreman confirmed that the tree was in bad shape. After they got down to the base of the tree, I knew that it was the right decision. Contacting Gray's was the right decision, too. The money paid was worth it and much cheaper than paying the cost of damages if the tree had cracked and fallen on something or someone.
Description of Work: Gray's removed trees from the front and back of the house, plus removed a dead truck from a birch tree.

The work was done well. A bit pricey as we later had 5 more trees removed at a lower cost per tree by a different local company. However, they do a lot of other work at our place and may have been cheaper because of that. We really only chose this company as they were working at our neighbors and we wanted the trees removed quickly. The local storms had many companies booked up nd these guys were willing to do the job.
Description of Work: Hired this company when they were working at a neighbor property. Paid to remove 3 large Austrian Pines. Wrote a check for the services and provided it to the crew that did the job immediately after they finished the work. Today.....three months after this work was performed and paid for, someone drives into my driveway (most service people park on the street and walk up the driveway....especially when we've never met or invited them onto our property) and gets out of his truck, and tells me he is there because he was never paid for the work the company did at our house. This conversation was pretty disturbing as we absolutely paid the crew that worked at our place and additionally some other people working at my home overheard this conversation (and are probably unnecessarily concerned about the the check we wrote them today). Additionally the person making this accusation is someone we've never met. It turns out it was the owner. Imagine a stranger walks up to you asking for money that was already paid 3 months ago.......I'm sure even if we were guilty of not paying that some sort of debt collection laws probably prohibit someone from showing up at my home. He did back off a bit and did apologize and ask me to check my records and call him. I did so -- confirming that we had paid and the check was cashed two days later. I was able to fax him a copy of the cashed check. I have no idea why the company records do not reflect payment (I'm assuming there may be an employee problem here)....but I'm astounded that someone would come to my home THREE MONTHS later and in an accusing manner tell me they had not received payment. I would have preferred a note in my mailbox if they had no contact information for us. Be certain to keep proof of payment if you work with this company. Probably a good idea in general.

We took advantage of Angie's BIG DEAL with $99 for $200 of Gray's Tree Service bucks. We actually paid $198 for $400 and then paid the balance when the work was done. Rick Gardner came in September to evaluate the work needed to be done and set a date for late October. The work was done November 1st. The team was very efficient and finished in less than 2 hours. I thought it would take much longer so that was a nice surprise. The only part I did not like is that the men used the neighbors property a little too much, although they did clean up nicely. The work was done as per agreed upon. Although I wish the price could have been less, I think the price was fair. I would recommend this tree service for dependability and efficiency. Rick Gardner was kind to listen to our concerns and was extremely easy to deal with. Carl, the supervisor on the job, was most helpful also. I will be contacting them next year for the remainder of the work. Gray's Tree Service is reliable, dependable and efficient. Thanks Angie's list the BIG DEAL when I needed it!
Description of Work: 3 semi-large trees removed and five other trees had limbs removed. Trunks were cut at ground level. All tree limbs and debris were shredded and removed by Gray Tree Service.

Rick Gardner came out in mid-Sept to assess the pine tree work. The date of actual work was Sat, Oct 8 at 8am. Rick and his crew arrived on time, worked continuously and well in cooperation with me and the tree looks wonderful. They did a great job! They also left my yard in great shape scrupulously removing waste and they raked the yard. I would hire them again and recommend them highly.
Description of Work: I bought the Big Deal that Grey's Tree Service offered of $200 worth of work for $99. The job as assessed plus a couple of other tasks I requested account for the total price. The worked performed consisted of trimming branches and removing all the deadwood from a large pine tree in our front yard, pulling out two deeply buried stakes in the backyard, chipping the branches and waste etc from three bushes that I had removed myself earlier.

There were a couple of miscommunications between Rick and my husband and me. We bought two Angie's list coupons for $200 of Gray Tree Service for $100 each (total of $400 of tree service). When Rick came out in July to give us an estimate, we told him we wanted our long hedge trimmed (about 50 ft. long), and 3 small to medium sized trees removed. He said it would be $300 beyond the $400 worth of services we had already paid for. This would be a total of $700 of tree service which seemed appropriate. I asked him if he was going to give me a written estimate and he said that he would write it down later and he didn't give out written estimates. He gave me the total additional sum we would need to pay - $300 - on the back of his business card without a list of what would be done. We were on vacation in August - we called him in early September to schedule the tree service. When I asked him to review for us what he planned to do, he did not mention the hedge and when I asked about it, he said we never mentioned it. I am sure that we did - it's possible he didn't hear us. He then sent someone to look at the hedge and left a message saying the cost would be $400. I thought he meant $400 total (beyond the $400 already paid for) so I left him a message saying that was fine. He called back saying it would be an additional $400 just for the hedge for a total of $700 beyond the $400 of tree service we paid for with the coupons- this seemed too high. We had the hedge trimmed 8 years ago and we remember the cost being about $175, so we told him to just remove the trees and we would have to do the hedge at another time. The actual work was fine. The trees were removed and carted away. These misunderstandings could have been avoided if Gray Tree Service used written estimates. Also, even taking inflation into account, their pricing seemed too high.

Rick came out to give us a quote to remove lilac bushes between a utility shed and a neighbors fence. The bushes were providing cover for small furry critters who liked to setup temporary living quarters under the shed. We scheduled the work and the guys arrived on-time and ready to work. They removed the bushes and brought in the machine which removes the stumps and roots. They were quick to complete the work and did a good job on the clean up. $400 is a reasonable price for the work they did. We rated the cost a B because we thought $400 was a bit more than we thought it should cost, but the cost was also fair if we factor in the difficult working conditions of a 3-foot wide area between the shed and the fence. it was a really knarly area.... We've used Gray a few times over the past few years and they've always done a good job. We plan to use them in the future, and have recommended their company to friends and family in the area.

During the months I was trying to get on his schedule, he was always polite. There were many weather-related issues that were out of his control, but this situation was very frustrating for me. I had purchased the Big Deal in April, and the entire summer went by and my trees were not trimmed. The work he did took about 10 minutes and the work itself was sufficient. However, the issue was just getting him out to my home.

Description of Work: Had a tree broken from the wind. Rick came out for an estimate in reasonable time, we talked and he left his bid which was middle price of others, but his knowledge, professionalism earned him the job. I emailed him with the request to perform the job 2-3 days later and he got back to me the next day and let me know he would be out the following week - which he was. He and his crew did the work while I was at work and he did exactly what we had discussed and left the area clean.

Rick's father came out yesterday to give an estimate.? I asked him how mush it would cost to have one particular limb removed.? He said he didn't know for sure.? I explained that I had coupons from Angie's list.? He said that he didn't "know anything about any coupons".? I said that the coupons were for 400.00 worth of work.? He said that the limb could be removed for 400.00.? He gave me his son's card and told me to call him to schedule the removal.? I called Rick who said that he would call me back in a couple weeks as he was scheduled pretty far out.? He did not take my phone number though.? I am definitely not impressed so far.? I plan to get a couple other estimates as a result of this encounter.
Description of Work: So far I have only received an estimate for the work being done for the coupon.

I purchased a "Big Deal" for $99.00 for $200.00 worth of tree service. My project was to trim the brtanches off of two trees. The "Big Deal" coupon stated "Please keep in mind, this was a popular deal and your appointment may be slightly delayed due to the increased volume of customers", which I can appreciate. I called Rick to schedule an appointment and a quote, he came out promptly and gave me a quote but never followed through which seemed to be a miscommunication between my expectations and his timelines. Finally when they came out and did the job it was very well executed, they were effecitive, effecient and quick.

I purchased a "Big Deal" for $99.00 for $200.00 worth of tree service. My project was to remove a stump of an evergreen tree that had been cut down. The "Big Deal" coupon stated "Please keep in mind, this was a popular deal and your appointment may be slightly delayed due to the increased volume of customers", which I can appreciate. I started trying to schedule the job in late May. I initially got the run around because Rick Gardner indicated that he didn't have my Angie's List Big Deal and he couldn't schedule me unless I was able to provide it. I think that this was just a delay tatic, but I faxed it over to him. Then he said that due to the recent storms in the Northwest Suburbs, he would be further delayed in going out to my job in the Southwest Suburbs to provide an estimate for the job. I suggested that I could take pictures of the project and email them to him so that he wouldn't have to drive all the way out for the estimate and then again to perform the work. I emailed the pictures on June 27th and didn't hear back from him until July 14th that he finally looked at the pictures. He said that normally for a trunk this size, he would charge $250.00, but since I took the trouble of taking the pictures for him, he would do the project for the $200.00 that the "Big Deal" covered. We scheduled the work for the first week of August. In the meantime, there were more storms in the Northwest suburbs, so my project was delayed again. He rescheduled for August 13th, but due to rains in the Northwest Suburbs, they didn't come. He finally rescheduled for August 27th and they showed up and performed the job. I wouldn't purchase another "Big Deal" from this company, because the “Big Deals” obviously don't get any priority over calls that come in on a daily basis. I was happy with the work when it was finally done.
