+ -1 moreThey did a great job but hit a snag when stumping the old stump. The workman accidentally chopped up a plastic drainage hose which was buried and not visible. The owner came over and repaired everything perfectly within about two hours at no charge. It turned out fine, and no harm was done. It was refreshing not to have a hassle or worry. I will use Gray again, and recommend them heartily.
Description of Work: They trimmed one tree near a new garage which we were having built, took out one smaller trees near the house, and removed an old medium size stump which was close to the house.

+ -1 morePurchased twp Big Deal coupons for tree trimming services. Needed two trees trimmed. One large tree in the back yard whose limbs were growing into and over our two story home. The other was a moderate sized tree. They were very prompt in providing an estimate, scheduling, and performing the work. I had to pay an additional $250 in addition to the two coupons. I thought it was a little pricey, but they did an excellent job.

Description of Work: They were pretty non-responsive, and then it went down after that. Nice guy, had to cancel first appointment, and then I had to recontact him after several days to ask if he was going to come. He apologized, said he'd been busy, and then came within the originally promised 48 hours. The second problem was the price. I have a very low (you could get at it with a short ladder),fairly large limb of a maple in the backyard. I had spent $100 to get the $200 deal. After he was here, he e-mailed me that it would be an additional $100 to do it!! So, he was claiming this was, in effect, a $300 job. I assure you, with a power saw and one assistant, this would be a 15 minute job--max. I feel the price was outrageous. Work not done, no follow up phone call from him when I did not call to set a date. Here is the problem with Angie's...I'm out the $100. Period. Service not performed, I get to say I'm not happy, and I'm still out the moneyl.

+ -1 moreHave been using Gray for the past 11 years. Last two visits, they came earlier than scheduled, so if you want to be home, you need to anticipate for that. Some of the workers are excellent, but some are just ok. I think they have become too comfortable with my business.....some of the workers are getting sloppy with the clean-up, so that is why they are getting a "B" for quality. I used to believe their higher prices were justified for the quality of the work, but next time I might obtain estimates from other companies just to be sure.

+ -1 moreThe tree removal and tree trimming in the side yard and back yard was very well done. The trouble we had was with overgrown bushes in the front yard. They were overhanging the sidewalks and driveway. Though Gray's trimmed them back, they still overhung these areas. We had to call back several times to talk to someone about how we were unhappy with the bushes. Finally someone came back (we were withholding payment until we were satisfied with the work in front). They simply lopped off the overhanging parts, but did not reshape the bushes overall. They don't look good and although we paid, we were not happy with the final result. I wish someone had given us some more options or discussed the problem more thoroughly with us.
Description of Work: Gray's removed a tree for us in our side yard. They also trimmed tree branches from two large trees and cut down very overgrown bushes/small trees around the perimeter of our back yard.

+ -1 moreWe were not home when they came to do the work. The two crab apples looked fine. They grow fast and usually need to be shaped so that they have a rounded crown. The white ash looked very thin, like it had a lot removed. I realize that the tree had suffered some die back a year or two ago, but still was surprised how much they took off. Our biggest problem was with the red maple. It did not look good at all after trimming. It is about 30 years old and had a very thick canopy which provides a lot of shade. However, it looked very thin after trimming and even one year later has not regained it's usual shape. Overall, I was not completely satisfied with the job they did. I think, in general, they tried to remove too much at the expense of the tree's appearance. However, their price was more than reasonable for the work they did. If I hired them again, I would want to be home when they work so that I could manage the job better.
Description of Work: I purchased 2 certificates for pre-paid tree trimming through Angie's List which entitled me to $400 worth of service. Rick Gardner, the owner, was kind enough to accept both certificates although the "small print" apparently entitled me to use only one. He came out promptly and we discussed my tree trimming needs. We have 6 mature trees which need periodic trimming and shaping. We try to get to 1 or 2 every year. We agreed to have Gray trim 4 trees (white ash, red maple, and two crab apples). Gray's did the work either in late December 2011 or January 2012.

+ -1 moreFamily business - estimate seemed high for small job, but timing was late in season and well reviewed. went ahead. crew arrived on time - large crew for task - handled tasks very well and friendly/professional. cleaned up afterwards - left area better than when they arrived! only disappointment was that my expectation from the verbal estimate was that the tree fertilizer was a liquid product inserted deep in soil. Turned out it was solid spikes (that I already had). Cost was $75 per tree. Would not repeat that portion again as the spikes are inexpensive.

+ -1 moreThe crew arrived on time as scheduled (large crew) and went about staging the area for removal of the branches cut as well as getting people in position to safely climb and cut up the excess tree. Cleanup was on-going and thorough. Protection was afforded underlying shrubs, trees and walkways. Other than having less tree, the area looked as if no one had been there. Very clean and thorough.
Description of Work: Two extremely trees were topped (removal of 1/3 from the top of each tree) and trimmed. Debris collected, shredded and left (per my request).

Description of Work: I had a big tree on the side of my yard and some of the branches were leaning close to my chimney. Needed them cut back so in winter the branches, weighed down by ice and snow, wouldn't knock against my chimney on a windy day. The tree crew climbed up and cut various branches as instructed. I wanted to save the wood for my fireplace so they very nicely chain sawed the limbs into smaller pieces. My only complaint is I didn't notice a few dead branches that I really thought the crew should have noticed; it is their job, no? Didn't notice them until after they were gone. So a little frustrated about that. But all in all they did a good job. They took the smaller branches and ground them up into their truck.

My husband called & it was resolved pleasantly & quickly. We were told to get an estimate & then they let us have our own sprinkler guy fix it.

+ -1 moreOverall the experience was excellent. The only glitch was a delay in doing the job because of a storm that created alot of emergency work for Gray Tree. There was no response to my calls for a number of days but I did receive an apology and explanation. That is the only reason 'punctuality' did not get an excellent. However, when the specific date and time was set the crew arrived a little early and began work immediately. They worked like a well oiled machine, everyone had a job to do and no one missed a beat. I was astonished how quickly the tree came down, how careful the workers were and how neat the entire area was left after the stump was ground out. Very impressive job from start to finish!
Description of Work: Service included complete removel of a pear tree that was approximately 35' high and had about a 30' branch spread. It was close to my power lines and thelephone lines and about 4' from my deck. The service also included complete stump removal.
