Rick called and came out to give me an estimate. I did not speak to him and he called later to tell me the cost would be $1,000. I thought that was way too much for a trimming and told him so. In my mind the price should have been closer to $500. I told him I would have to think about it and that was the end of our contact. On thinking about it, I decided to get a refund on the coupons. If the coupons really are double their value, I would be charged $1200 to trim the tree--that's closer to removal price.

Sorry I do not agree. Your Maple tree is biggest in Chicagoland area. Major limbs need to come down which reflects in the cost. Thank you for the opportunity. Rick

I was very impressed with the speediness of response and detail of the estimate of work. I received a call back a few hours after the initial contact. They asked a few important questions and came to the property on the day decided to give a quote. While we did not select Gray's for this particular project, I was very impressed with their customer service and quality proposal. My interactions with the representative of the company were professional. I would contact them again if we needed similar service in the future. I would also recommend that they be contacted if others required services such as this.

Day after calling for a quote, I received the quote over the phone. It was 500 dollars less than the next closest bid. Two weeks later, after only talking on phone, Gray's Tree Service cut down tree, removed stump, and hauled away the debris, all while I was at work. They did an outstanding job.

I was referred to Gray Tree by an employee's step daughter. Rick came out right away & seemed very nice & quoted me $1500. I was having a new fence installed and he offered to work with the fence company on timing so that the bushes would be removed the day before the fence was to be installed. I liked that he suggested that. When I talked to him about his proposal, I asked if he'd match a competitor's coupon & he said no. I asked about a referral discount, he said no. I ultimately went with him as he was a referral & I ended up finding a coupon they had published (which he did not offer up). Long story - the project got delayed due to weather (snow). Where I understand that, the message Rick left me telling me they needed to push the date back was unclear, and he said to call him with questions. So I called him back, he seemed angry that I had questions for him (I was asking him to explain the word "covered" so I understood what conditions he could work in). I wasn't home the day they came to remove the bushes - apparently it had rained that day. My neighbor called me & basically said "wait til you see what the tree company did to your lawn". It was destroyed. He told me their machine was the size of a snowblower - I didn't see it so cannot say if it was or not. But my yard was a disaster. Mud everywhere - grass torn up, mud on the sidewalks, very messy. I called Rick to express my dissatisfaction - let him know they tore up much of my grass in one area (it had been sodded that summer) and he literally accused me of lying & asked if I had proof (receipt) for the sod. I could not believe how unprofessional he was being. As if I was lying about the sod! Had he said...the weather isn't looking good, I don't suggest doing this project in the rain - or had he told me in less than ideal (dry) conditions their machine could very well do lots of damage to grass, I could've had a chance to call the fence company & delay things again. Yes, I wanted my new fence, but not at the expense of now having to deal with a destroyed yard. He told me he was going out of town on vacation & would be in touch when he got back, I never heard from him. I have since found a stump in the yard they missed. He ultimately opened up a Pay Pal account for me so I could pay him that way, which was nice. I will never use them again & am now faced with replacing torn up grass & cleaning up a very muddy yard. I wish I would've read these reviews prior to hiring them-sounds like they did the same thing to someone else. This year I plan to have a tree removed from my yard & I will not be calling them

Response from Gray Tree Service
[Members name] is the type of person that does not take no for an answer. I told her SEVERAL times there was to much snow covering the stumps which would make it hard to grind out all the stumps and difficult to get the machine around the yard. She kept saying I just don't agree. I did come by as promised to look at the said damage and left her a detailed message on her voice mail. There was still a lot of snow on the grass, therefore to early to tell if any damage. The machine is no heavier then a lawn mower so I believe once the snow melts and the sun comes out the grass will be fine. As for the missed stump this is the first I'm hearing of it and will gladly come back to finish the job correctly now that all the snow is gone. Respectfully, Rick Gardner Owner

Removed large ash tree killed by emerald ash borer from back yard. Showed up during one week period said they would. Careful not to drop limbs into neighbor's yard, since part of tree hung over the fence. I had asked that they delay removing stump until ground froze because back yard VERY soggy and wet. Didn't want their heavy machinery tearing up yard. They did it any way, leaving big ruts and damage to sod. But charge for actual tree removal was reasonable and they did haul everything away and stump grinding was neat and workmanlike.

After waiting for a half hour past the appointment time, I called company when no one showed up. Estimator called back and said he was running late (someone could have called); we agreed to a time two hours later. FIRST thing I mentioned to him when we walked out back was I had a septic field, and the tree could not be dropped; we don?t want the fingers of the field damaged. He knew before doing the estimate that the tree would have to be roped. He went to his vehicle to write the estimate. Came back to the door with the estimate in hand, but said had concerns about the job and the time it would take ? took another look at the tree. Added three hundred dollars to the estimate (see photo). OK, I could understand that. I told him that if I went with his company, I would be purchasing the deal they were offering on Angie?s List - $300 of service for $200/limit 2. He said he saw no reason that would not be honored. It was good until March 5th. He called back in less than one hour and asked me if I purchased that deal from Angie?s List yet. I said ?no?, and he said ?good? because after yet further consideration he had raise my estimate another ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS. I was sure I heard him wrong, but he confirmed what he said ? add ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS to the estimate. He figured he would need much more time to get the job done. I got four estimates (from highly rated Angie?s list contractors) for this job; three were within a few hundred dollars of each other. Grey Tree Service was a thousand higher than the highest bid. There is something VERY WRONG with this picture! A) Perhaps they need to educate their estimators. B) Maybe they should politely decline a job they can?t handle instead of overbidding. C) Or, it?s possible they tried to put one over on me.

Response from Gray Tree Service
First I apologize for the confusion and being late for the appointment. As the owner of Gray Tree I would highly agree with A. There is no job we can't handle so B is incorrect, and C is out of the question. That is why my salesman called within the hour to give a new quote. Bidding a large tree removal can be a challange and I will continue to work with my sales team so this does not happen again. I appreciate your feedback. Sincerely, Rick Gardner Owner

The service was punctual and friendly. There was a lot of work to be done around electric wires etc. The work went quickly and efficiently and everything was cleaned up afterwards. We purchased two $200 certificates (paid $400 for $800 worth of work). We felt the work done fell more toward the $400 paid for the Angie's List "special" than for the $800 value that was promised. Estimates from other tree services seemed to bear this out, but we had already purchased the "special" and needed to use it. Several things further shaped our experience: 1. The person who came out to estimate was well over an hour late and called en route AFTER the time he was to have arrived. This caused a jam-up for a workman we had scheduled to give an estimate on another project. 2. The work was promised to be completed before Mother's Day (because we were trying to schedule the repaving of our driveway and didn't want branches or debris damaging the paving). However, the work was not done on the schedule we were told, Moreover, we had to call to ask why the date of the tree work had not been met and when the work would be done . Apologies followed. 3. When the work was done, we felt the tree trimmers, while courteous, were "overly exacting" about how much trimming was to be done. It was basically a quick, cursory job. 4. We have delayed writing a review out of sensitivity to the estimator who clearly indicated that Angie's List customers and offering the specials was important to business during this down economy. While respectful of any business and/or its owner needing to meet economic challenges, we felt we would not use this particular business/vendor again but wish the company well and respect that other customers may have had a much better experience. Furthermore, we acknowledge that any business can have unexpected things happen with a job or a customer that don't reflect their usual standards. This was just one customer's experience.

It was pretty good, overall. There was an additional charge. The initial person that came out to assess what I wanted was very professional. I believe it’s a family-ran business and I felt very confident with all of that. I explained what my goals and budget restrictions were. We agreed on certain trees to be dealt with so that was fine. A lot of people showed up which was good. The foreman told me that his understanding was to take one tree limb out in the back and I told him no. There were a number of other things that were specifically discussed with the estimator. I don’t know what he has written down and I didn’t have everything in writing because all the estimate he did was write down the price on the business card. There was no itemized receipt. It would have felt better if I have something in my hand that had it all in writing. Like, this was the service as agreed upon, like these trees and limbs. I felt that maybe there was a little more debris left for me to pick up than I might have hoped. There were branches and twigs that they didn’t pick up. I felt a little awkward that the guy in the back was annoyed that he had to do more than he thought. The guys in the front yard were wonderful. I wanted a couple little branches cut from my neighbor’s tree and he was just having a fit. The guys in the front understood so they worked with him. They were patient with the neighbor. I give them a B rating for professionalism because of the head guy. I got a quote from another company to do a little bit more than that for a little less money. I’m not sure if I’m really getting a good deal or not.

They wanted to charge and do a lot more than what I wanted to have done. They quoted me a much higher price then what I originally wanted. I asked him that if I could get the neighbor's kids over to do some cutting on the lower branches would they be able to do the higher work at the $99. He was fine with that. On the day of the service two young guys came out, climbed up the tree with ladders, and cut things off. It was fine and they were great. Its nice to see that there are no branches on the electrical wires anymore. It was a real bad wind storm in the Chicago area around the time he was supposed to come. We had to put it off for a little while because he had a lot of work to do with that, but it all turned out okay. I didn't have any pressing needs or any branches that were ready to fall on something that would cause a bigger problem. The people who came out were very easy to talk to, understood what I wanted, and were fine with it. I don't have too many trees, but if had more I'm sure they would be somebody I would contact if I needed something else done.

I loved Gray’s! They came right out and trimmed the tree. I was nervous about the job at first since I thought they took away too much. But after a couple of weeks, what they did was great. The tree was trimmed perfectly. I now have light in my yard. They were fabulous! They even took care of the hauling once the trimming was done. I would absolutely use them again if needed.

The tree was trimmed very well. It needed serious pruning, and they did an excellent job of getting it back into shape, and hauling everything away. I think the price was a little steep. It was $500 without the tree bucks. The chord of wood was delivered, and I assumed that they would stack the wood in my back yard based on other customer's reviews. They charged us $50 extra for that, but it was worth it. The wood has been excellent to burn in the fireplace.
