Went fine but I was not happy about the plumbing service agreement that went with it. It was poorly explained and presented as though it were part of the job rather than an additional fee or a choice.

It went very well from the first appt, and explanation of several options were explored, We had a question that the tech was unclear about and told us he would be back to us in 2 days. Instead he went to his car and call the main office and got us the answer within 15 minutes. They were out within 3 days of calling for the work to be done, arrived on time and completed the work for less than the original quote. Everything was left neat and clean.
Description of Work: Hooked into our main line under the house and ran an additional line to give up a spigot on the sid eof our house where none was installed previously

I could buy a brand new unit with installation for less than they wanted to charge just for an installation. Ultimately we went with Superior Water and Air (who we originally bought the system from) who only charged us $250 (after a $50 discount) for the installation. The technician they sent out was on-time and very professional. I can't fault them for anything other than their price, but it was a pretty big fault.
Description of Work: The provider gave us an estimate of almost $2000.00 to install our water softener.

Response from YMC Inc
In response to the pricing portion of your experience with YMC,Inc plumber I would like to clarify a couple things. The price we gave was to install a customer supplied reverse osmosis system and water softener. With a reverse osmosis system they require a drain connection and if done incorrectly (not to code) there is a possible cross contamination with the waste system in the residence. The same holds true for a water softener. To work on waste and vent systems on a sanitary plumbing system it is required by the state of Idaho to have plumbing license and pull a plumbing permit with the local municipality. Then a plumbing inspector does inspection with a pass or fail card. Many times in the service business we run into work not installed to code which can be a hazard to not only the homeowners but others on the water system. We also included a price to install a pre-filter before the softener which is recommended in the installation of almost every water softener. This protects the diaphragm in the softener head and prolongs the life of the softener. We are not saying that the installer did or did not do any of these things but just clarifying what our $1675 estimate DID include. If you have any doubts than please feel free to contact the local plumbing inspector to make sure that your system is up to code.

Plumber Darrin showed up on time with a call 1/2 hour before arriving....As I'm on a fixed income, I provided the disposal unit and faucet...The big box store was cheaper than if YMC would have provided the parts...I got an estimate and Darrin started the work. As it turned out, the disposal unit that I provided was bad out of the box....Darrin gave me a good price for a disposal unit that he provided and finished the work to my satisfaction...Maybe since I'm a new homeowner (lived in apts all of my life), I was a little shocked with the labor costs (I figure about $173 an hour), but he did a good job...

A hot water line connected to our water heater sprang a pinhole leak in one of the elbow fittings. To replace it would require cutting it out, and brazing in a new elbow ($0.70 retail) and a few inches of 1/2" copper pipe ($4.00 retail). I didn't have time to do this before work, so I called YMC to do the job, accepting that I would have to pay for someone else's time and inconvenience. Imagine my surprise when my wife told me that the plumber wanted almost $270 for this 45 minute job involving $5.00 in parts. I called him right away, and was informed that YMC's policy is to charge a flat fee "by the book," and not based on "parts and labor." I informed him it was my policy not to be criminally overcharged, and to find something else in the book around $100. He called back with an offer of $160, which I paid just to be rid of him. We had previously used YMC to repair another leak that occurred a foot or two further up in the same pipe (which stretches from the hot water recirculation pump to the water heater). That repair was also outrageously expensive, but one I paid without complaint because it was repaired on a Sunday night, took a bit more time, and involved additional parts. The plumber that came that time (a different person) informed me that the line downstream of a hot water recirculation pump tended to wear quickly, on account of the turbulence. I'm beginning to wish that, knowing about the turbulence, he had replaced the whole 4 foot section of pipe, instead of just 6 inches of it. Would _emphatically_ not recommend YMC, to any and all who'll listen.

Representative came to our house and put together a bid to install a back-flow device. The bid ranged from about $1,800 to $1,600 depending on whether we paid a fee of slightly more than $100 up front to become a "preferred customer" in order to get a discount on the work. This fee would be good for one year; renewals year-to-year would be slightly less expensive. My husband and I were put off by this approach. We will give our loyalty to a company that does good work for us at a fair price. We don't like this "subscription/obligation" approach, in spite of the idea of getting benefits like no after hour charges should we have a plumbing emergency. We got a second bid from a different plumber who proposed installing a less expensive device that could be done using existing piping (and without doing all the digging the other plumber said would be necessary) at a cost of $368, including the annual test required by state law. We hired him on the spot. In addition, he did not charge for giving us a bid like YMC did.

Response from YMC Inc
I apologize if you did not feel comfortable with our techs presentation. First the subscription as you mentioned is actually a service agreement which one of the benefits is to receive Preferred Pricing along with a full inspection in the crawl space, replacing and/or cleaning aerators on faucets, flushing the water heater to prolong the life of the water heater, checking water pressure and hardness. This program is not mandatory but it is a very valuable offer for our customers. Second to connect potable water to irrigation water has a huge liability if not done correctly. Our local plumbing code requires this to be protected by the number one cross contamination device which is an Reduced Pressure Backflow Device. There is no other device legal for this application. The reasoning for this device not only protects the homeowner that the connection is made but the entire system including neighbors can be contaminated. Irrigation water is not potable and many times has pesticides and other non-consumable chemicals in them. For the protection of home and business owners these type of jobs are required to be inspected by the local plumbing inspector. If this job was not inspected than I suggest calling the company who performed the work to produce a permit number with an approval. With amount that was mentioned for the "cheaper' valve it seems possible that the other company and our interpretation of the scope of work was not the same. We only intend to perform the work asked for a reasonable price but also to ensure the health of our customers and others.

I only know YMC through my experiences with one of their staff -- Marty Roberts Marty Roberts, who spearheads the plumbing part of YMC, did a ton of work on my home when he was owner of Big Dog Plumbing. He sold that business to YMC and joined them to grow the plumbing services business. Marty either did the work himself or supervised the work of others, whom I did not meet. This job had two parts: 1) perform all plumbing installations for fixtures on a bathroom remodel job -- shower, tub, vanities, toilets. In the middle of the remodel, we found that there was some structural work needed for the Roman tub, so Marty had to fuss with that plus all the other things. 2) Marty needed to relocate a gas outlet to accommodate a new range -- normal placement of gas wouldn't work, so Marty had to locate the gas inside the wall. The thing I like about Marty is that he is professional in every way. His work is first class. So if the rest of the YMC organization is as good as Marty, they're a real winner.

It was really good, we liked him and the guy was great. He fixed the shower and we were happy with his work. We had some questions about our water softener and he wasn’t really sure about the model of our water softener, so he went back and did some research on it, which we really liked. We liked the idea that he didn’t snap off an answer or try to sell us something new. We didn't do any comparison -shopping on it. He was really responsive.

Since I first found YMC on Angie's list, I have used them three times. I also referred them to a friend, who was equally impressed. Stayed firmly with the quoted price, as well.

I was getting ready to have new vinyl installed in the bathroom of a rental and when I pulled the toliet I noticed there were several wax seals installed and after cleaning them up, saw that the old flange was below the level of the floor and not parallel with the floor. I called YMC and they sent a fellow out the same day and he recommended that I cut out a section of the floor and replace it so he could install a new flange that was level with the floor. I asked about pricing and he showed me a book with a flat rate for the job. I asked about doing the job time and materials and he said he would check when he went back to pick up tools. While he was gone, I cut out the section or floor, removed the old flange, and replaced the section with new board, then the plumber arrived and cut the hole. His hole saw wasn't big enough, but we were able to use my circular saw and his saber saw to widen the hole. It was a bit tricky getting the flange installed and connected to the sewer pipe, but with my help in the bathroom and his work in the basement we were able to get the job done. After the job was complete, I asked what the office had said about time and materials for the job and he said they said "No". I found this a bit frustrating because it was a fairly straight-forward job. There was easy access to the bottom of the flange in the basement, it took the two of us to get the install finished, and I installed a new piece of flooring so there was a nice flat level surface for him to attach to, plus I cleaned out all the old wax rings and such. I thought that should be worth something... So, the job was done well, he cleaned up the mess, didn't mind me watching, and came the same day I called. Those are all good things. The only complaint I had was doing the job flat rate and maybe that's a normal plumber thing, but next time I need plumbing work done, I'll be checking for a place that will do the job time and materials. If I can't find one, I'd be willing to go with YMC again, but check on time and materials before having the plumber come out. I don't mind paying $75 an hour for an experienced plumber, but the actual job itself took 2 hours tops not counting the estimate or running back to Meridian to get tools. The flat rate cost was significantly over $75 an hour.
