Good. Original salesman couldn't participate at installation time because of new baby just coming into the family, but fill in person and crew did just fine.

The technicians were there when they said they'd be there and work was completed as close to 'on scedule' as humanly possible. Every one of the tech that was there, and have been since, have been absolutely fantastic. They really made us feel comfortable, answering any questions completely. Great team! Since the installation, the condenser has frozen up a few times, but it turns out that was related to the homeowner shutting off too many registers, MY FAULT!!!! Regardless, the technicians (namely Justin), were great with attempting to troubleshoot our problems. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!!!!

Tyrel and Trenton were the technicians who showed up with the salesman, MIke 15 minutes early. Mike made the introductions and Tyrel and Trenton started immediately. They were prompt, courteous and even moved my garbage cans out to where the garbage truck could access them because their truck was parked in front of the house and I had parked my care in the way after dropping kids at school that morning. I work out of my house and they were not bothered by my dogs and let me kinow when they were going to drill or make noise that might disturb my work. They worked from 0845 - 1700 and hauled my old equipment away, so I didn't have to make a trip to the dump. At the end of the day, they ran me through the thermostat controls and left me with the manuals, business cards and advised I would be receiving a call from April to schedule a city building code inspector to review their work within a business day or 2. Tyrel and Trenton were fast, efficient and very nice to talk to. I could not have asked for any better experience and will definitely recommend A-1 to friends and neighbors.
Description of Work: I went through my local Costco, which has an arrangement with A-1 to estimate and install heating and air conditioning units. I worked with Mike Casper and on a bid to replace my 19 year old AC and furnace (both Ruud brand), because the AC unit finally failed and the furnace was charged with R22, which is the refrigerant that is being phased out due to efficiency and environmental concerns. I was also interested in including a heat pump as part of the estimate. I went to another highly rated provider from Angie's List for a competitive bid. A-1 with the Costco discount beat the competition by $2000 - $3000 depending on the levels (low cost/lower efficiency, medium cost/medium efficiency vs. highest cost/highest efficiency) of equipment included in the bids. Both suppliers gave me 3 options of Furnace, AC and filters and I could mix-and-match such that if I wanted a high end AC unit paired with a low end furnace and a medium filtration unit, I could swap each unit around to suit my needs. I was also interested in a humidifier and attic fan. I chose to install a furnace, AC unit, heat pump, filter and they did do some minor duct work to retro-fit the new equipment to my existing ducts. I did not have the attic fan or humidifier installed. Equipment installed: Furnace: G61MP-36B-071 - 95% efficiency, 2-stage gas AC: Elite 14 SEER XP-14-030 R410A Heat Pump, 1-stage CR33-30/36A 2.5-3 ton downflow coil 16X25 MERV16 filter C16-10 16x25 Healthy Climate Cabinet Y2081 Comfort Sense 7500 T-Stat 4 heat / 2 cool touch screen thermostat Maintenance for 1 yr I paid out a total of $10,123.00 to Costco and A-1 up front. Costco will be providing me a gift card for using their service in the amount of $800 and with my Executive Membership discount of 2% totaling $172, my total cost will be $9,151.64

Sometime during the night our AC quit working. We checked the breaker and that was not it.Checked Angie's for services available and after trying another vendor I called A1. They came earlier than originally scheduled and that was a bonus.Kevin took a look at the system and did some diagnostics on the compressor and the capacitor and determined they were ok. Some further looking found a fuse that went bad and needed replacement. He gave us the option of replacing or for him to replace it. Since now we know where it is.. we will do it.Kevin was professional and got the job done. Thank you sooooo much A1. It's HOT outside.
Description of Work: Kevin responded to the service call. Our AC went out sometime during the night. I called another service and they could not come today. Called A1 and they would come out today. Opened up system and after some diagnostics... it was a fuse.

It all went very well. My only comments about what I would do differently is to take more time to evaluate the equipment and cost. We were under some time constraint with our A/C out and leaving on a trip for two weeks. I would have liked to look closer at Carrier products (with Western heating and A/C) and Trane products. I think Lennox is OK but read mixed reviews. I think Carrier and Trane may have better reviews in general. However, we were and are very satistied with A-1. We have no past experience with them for service so this will be a wait and see process.
Description of Work: Our A/C went out just before July 4. A-1 was quick to respond to our need. The sales person was terrific to go over options and help us through the process. It was kind of hard to compare and evaluate pricing on different products but we went for a high efficiency furnace and A/C. We also put in 2 gas water heaters all the same day. Our own furnace and water heaters were 19 years old so we decided it was best to do them all at once and get a little better deal. A-1 did an excellent job in setting this up in a prompt and timely fashion. We were very happy with the install.

We don’t remember how much we spent on their services. We’d used them before when we had remodeled our house. A number of years ago we had bought another furnace from them. So it was repeat business. Our furnace went out in the middle of winter and they got here as quickly as they could. They put the furnace in as quickly as they could. So their responsiveness was good. Their punctuality and professionalism were good as well. They got here when they said they would and they were very professional. We will use them again in the future.

Very prompt and courteous young man. He checked everything out very carefully and then gave some great suggestions about cooling my upstairs area. He suggested I try running my fan continuously first, before I think about investing in another solution, like zoning or ductless air conditioning. Both my parents and daughter use A-1 and have been very pleased. I am also.
Description of Work: We had our air conditioner serviced for the upcoming summer. We also had him check air duct for leaking and give us suggestions to keep our upstairs temperature tolerable during the hot summer days.

This grade has been changed from an "F" to a"C". The company, after seeing the initial report, contacted me and compensated me for some of the expenses incurred in this experience. They have further assured me that they have educated their employees to prevent a recurrence of these events. I contacted A-1 Heating on Thursday, Dec. 22 My furnace was taking a long time to respond to an increase in temperature. The tech came out, and diagnosed a faulty inducer. He turned off the furnace and said he had to leave it that way for safety reasons. This I understand, as they didn?t want to be liable for any problems and there may be licensing issues involved as well. Then he told me that I would have to wait for a repair until the following Tuesday IF the part came in by then. He explained that the part would not come in until Tuesday because Monday was a holiday [the day after Christmas]. I asked him if they could use expedited shipping to speed the delivery, and he said no. At that point, I should have paid him and fired him and called another contractor who knew a phone number for UPS. The next day, I called A-1 and told them I would be without heat for 5 days, and asked if there was any way to expedite the shipment of the part and let me pay overtime rates for an installation on Saturday. The answer was no. My cost was $180 for extra heaters and an extra $60 on my electric bill for operating said heaters those days without heat. That $240 would have paid to ship in a part on an expedited basis a couple of times over. I worked in transportation for 24 years in a billing department, including expedited shipments, so have a reasonable background to make this statement. No matter what their technical expertise, I have never before in my 69 years heard of a heating company that would not move heaven and earth to help a customer without heat in Winter. I will never call them again.
Description of Work: An analysis of why my furnace was taking 20 min. to respond to an increase in the thermostat setting. The technician came, diagnosed, turned off the furnace, then told me it could not be fixed until the following Tuesday. The following Tuesday it was fixed.

They did an excellent job. They offered us three different efficiency/cost options for the equipment, explaining clearly the pros and cons of each type, and once we picked one for our desired goals and budget Ben was very thorough in making sure any applicable discounts could be applied, including Idaho Power efficiency programs, etc. The concrete basement wall they had to drill through for the gas, electrical, and AC lines proved to be much thicker than anyone anticipated and they had to bring in special drill bits to get through (it took close to a full day for that task while others worked). They handled the situation well and did their best to disguise the gas piping through some thorny landscaping (which was also adjacent to the new AC unit where none existed before). Given issues we had with the water drain at our old house from the furnace (which sometimes backfilled through a trap into the furnace), they installed a pump to feed the water down into the drain which continues to work well so far. The high efficiency equipment we selected from them is quite frankly amazing; the variable speed setup is far quieter than anything we've ever used before and the AC unit is also very quiet (but quite large); one can easily talk over it unlike older systems. While they handled and worked around all contractors pretty well, they had a bit of miscommunication with the electrician, who ended up arriving late in the first day and staying into the evening to make sure the work all got completely in a timely manner. We had no issues with various rebates or credits and these gradually came through over the course of the summer as expected. I would have no problems recommending them to others given our experience.
Description of Work: A-1 removed and disposed of the existing oil furnace, tied off the buried tank lines, connected piping to a new gas line, installed a new high efficiency natural gas furnace, and installed a new high efficiency air conditioner (both Lennox). It included a high caliber air filter in the system. They moved the dryer duct and added new duct work in our kitchen (for a range hood) and upstairs bathroom (for a ventilation fan) where neither existed before. Replaced the existing mercury thermostat with a nice fully programmable touchscreen model fully compatible with the new system. (We did not have them remove the buried oil tank for this job.) They arranged as part of their bid for an electrician to connect the new equipment to the existing breakers, hook up the new bath fan, a new ceiling fan, various switches to control these items, add multiple kitchen outlets (or replace when possible with grounded 3 prong outlets), and update a couple of other outlets upstairs to be more suited for electronic equipment. Their bid also included a contractor to come out and clean the heating ducts of any residue and dust (particularly since it was an oil furnace before), and had an insulation contractor come out and upgrade our attic to R50 which permitted an appropriately sized furnace and AC for the house. They coordinated all contractors to minimize our need to schedule with each. Since they were installing the gas line to the furnace, they also routed gas line inside to our deck (so we could use a natural gas grill) and another into a fireplace upstairs (so we could use a natural gas fireplace insert). The pipe as installed is not obvious with our existing landscaping. They coordinated well with the city inspections and gas company who verified there were no pressure leaks for the lines and installed the meter after everything was in place.

Overall it was a good experience. With the Groupon it was a bargain.
Description of Work: I was told over the phone my service would be around $180, since I have a heat pump. I purchased a Groupon for $45, which means I would get $90 worth of service. The service tech came at the end of the 3 hour window they gave me. He was professional and told me what he did, what he tested, how old the system was, what to expect in the future, and what things may cost at that time. I appreciated the information and the detail of his work. He accepted the Groupon as full payment, which was very nice.

It went great, they showed up on time and took care of business with care and expediency. I can tell the difference in the blowing effectiveness of the system, much more powerful.
Description of Work: Bud, our estimator, came out to give us a quote on some duct work. Our house is circa 1978 and so is the duct work. He gave me a quote to repair in addition to a quote to replace. I was so pleased that there was no hard sell involved, and that he provided me with both options. Any one else would have tried to hard sell me into replacing the entire ducting. We went with the repair option, and if we ever have to have the entire thing replaced we would call A-1. It is not the first time they have done work for us. They replaced our furnace and installed a gas cooktop. Having dealt with other hard sell people in the valley, I really trust and count on the guys from A-1!

It was horrible and the problems were numerous! I will list them in order: (1) When A-1's salesman found a propane dealer to back up the natural gas supply needed to run the generator, he misinformed me (due to not reading the contract) on what he thought the costs were for renting the propane tank. After the tank was installed, I was handed the contract to sign only to learn that additional fees in the contract would double my yearly rental cost. We just could not afford the additional expenses, so the tank had to be removed and the hole filled; (2) A-1 knew that New York Irrigation had a main supply line for our HOA directly below where they were going to dig the holes for the solar panel framework. I told A-1's salesman, Ben Richeson; the owner, Pat Minegar; and the subcontractor, Brad Thorp (Thorp Construction), this fact several days if not weeks prior to their starting. They ignored what I told them and spent a week laying out the lines where the 28 holes were to be dug, only to find out later that N.Y.I. would not allow them to dig there. They had to move the structure four feet further away from the fence, and spent three to four more days re-laying lines where the tubes where to be dug; (3) As a result of their lack of follow through and coordination on #2 above, they wanted me to bear the cost of ripping out 800 square feet of grass and re-landscaping it. After two to three days of heated arguments, they reluctantly agreed to pay half of the cost; (4) Brad Thorp, who was coordinating the digging of the 28 holes for the concrete footings for the solar panel framework, discovered that the company he had hired to dig the round holes did not have an auger for the job. The project came to a halt for two or three more days while he found another company; (5) The company that Mr. Thorp or A-1 hired to frame and pour the concrete into the 28 holes did not supply all the material to the job site to complete that part of the job on time. The supervisor on site for that company told me this while expressing his frustration at his lack of material to complete that portion of the job. Why wasn't A-1 and/or Brad Thorp overseeing the job so that this did not occur? (6) Despite the fact that I had told A-1's salesman, supervisor, and several of its workman that because my wife had "chronic fatigue" they could not begin work each day until 10 AM, they made no adjustment in the number of men they put on the job each day in order to finish it in a timely manner. Only one, two, or three men would show up at 10 AM and then leave by 3 or 3:30 PM. Additionally, A-1 would stop some or all of the employees they sent early to go work on another job. (7) There were two steel frames being made to hold the solar panels. We were told they were being "custom made" to perfectly hold 20 panels each. We made a point to clearly state that we wanted them made such that the solar panels completely covered the steel frames. A-1's salesman, Ben Richeson, assured me they would be made exactly that way. When the frames were installed and covered with the 40 panels, two open spaces remained, one at each end of each frame. When we asked why the frames weren't made to the specifications we had requested, A-1 stated they were not custom made and had been given to them that way. (The owner of A-1, Pat Minegar, later told my wife and I in a meeting at our residence that he had the frames made with the two extra spaces as "this is what he had done on his house." This was totally contrary to what I had requested, and he had not notified me of the change to the design of the frames until long after I had purchased two additional solar panels from him). A-1 told us that if we wanted to fill in the two open spaces, we would have to buy two more solar panels. They said that although they had sold us the first 40 panels @ $1747.50 each, they would give us a deal on two more and sell them to us at $1200 each. After we purchased the two additional panels, we called the manufacturer of the panels and were told by them that the 175 watt panels had been discontinued back in Dec. 2010. They were no longer being made. Furthermore, those panels could be purchased for $700 to $750 on the open market. The manufacturer also stated that the 175 watt panel was replaced by a newer 185 watt panel, and that they started shipping these to their dealers in June 2011. A-1 first claimed no knowledge of the 175 watt panel being taken out of production. Then A-1 stated that they just found out that "in June 2011 Westinghouse added more cells to the panels." Does it make any sense that Westinghouse stated they "shipped" the newer 185 watt panels to their distributers (i.e. A-1) in June 2011, yet A-1 claims that they just found out that "in June 2011 Westinghouse added more cells to the panels?" It is clear that A-1 was trying to get rid of its inventory of 175 watt panels. If they had sold me the 185 watt panels, I would have only needed 38 panels instead of the 42 that I now have; (8) When the job was completed, A-1 told us several times that they had notified Idaho Power to come out and install a new electric meter on the side of our house. Two weeks after A-1 had left the job site, I called Idaho Power to find out why they had not come out. Idaho Power told me they had not received any notice from A-1 to come out and change the meter. As a result, the new meter was not installed until July 26 and I did not get credit for all the power my system sent back into the electrical grid. When I called Pat Minegar about this, his response was "this happens all the time." If it happens all the time, why didn't A-1 continue to follow up with Idaho Power to make sure the job got done in a timely manner? As it turned out, the final electrical inspection had not been done, and it took another week to complete it. (9) Mr. Minegar came out to discuss our dissatisfaction with us. Two weeks later, we got a letter from him blaming me for everything that went wrong. I find this to be extremely unprofessional and just reinforces his lack of responsibility for a job that his company supposedly performs on a regular basis. He did send us a check for the cost of 1 of the extra 2 panels we purchased, but we're still stuck with panels that are obsolete, a landscaping bill that should never have happened, and one month of our lives put on hold so that this company could putz around with sub-standard materials and lack of organization. Update: This work was begun in May of 2011 and was finished August 1, 2011. We were told this was a 2-week job. It continued for 8 weeks!!We informed Mr. Minegar BEFORE the job began that my wife was medically diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue. Mr Minegar assured us his workers would not begin until after 10 am in the morning. As to his comment that his workers had to leave at noon, that is an outright LIE. I ate my lunch in the garage with his workers. The workers were the ones that apologized to us for being pulled off of our job by 2:00 pm each day to go to another site. Mr. Minegar was in complete control of this job. He was out at our home at least 3 or 4 times to see all the difficulties his workers were having getting the job correct.Mr. Minegar met with us and agreed with everything we said in our letter. Two days later, he sent us a letter stating that everything was our fault and there was nothing they could do. NEVER, NEVER was it mentioned to go to arbitration with Angie's List. Talk about outright lies!? Why did it take 9 months for Mr. Minegar to post his response to Angie's List?? Because he had to come up with a good story. I even mentioned at the end of my first account of what happened that Mr. Minegar reimbursed us for the cost of the 1 of the extra solar panels...why would I make up the rest of the report?I am outraged to have a contractor that I paid almost $100,000.00 to, call me a liar so long after my complaint was registered. All I can figure out is that they didn't want me to see how they had responded! As Mr. Minegar so proudly states, if anyone would like to continue to hear the truth, I would be glad to answer any questions anyone may want to ask - if Angie's List will allow it, I'm happy to share my phone number (362-4921).You have to wonder what kind of work someone will do after they've called another customer a liar in a public forum! I have updated my rating from a D to an F because I don't like being stabbed in the back. 2nd Update:We needed yearly maintenance on our "New" air conditioner that was installed by A-1 Heating & Air Conditioning. Since we've had so many problems with A-1, we called another company. That company came out today and we found that A-1 employees had installed the system improperly! The wiring was a mess, and we had to spend MORE money just to get the system to perform properly! This never ends! We'll be paying for this the rest of our lives! Although we paid A-1 $93,000.00, we're still paying hundreds of dollars to fix all of their mistakes and shoddy workmanship!!
Description of Work: A1 Heating and Air Conditioning, in conjunction with Costco, installed 42 Solar Panels in our backyard, installed a whole house backup generator, an air purifer, and hired all the subcontractors required to complete the job. A-1 informed us that the generator runs on natural gas, but can be backed up by proprane. I gave them the go ahead to find a propane dealer, dig the hole for the propane tank, and have it installed as backup to the natural gas for the generator with the provision that all costs associated with that propane tank be disclosed before installation.

Response from A-1 Heating and Air Conditioning & Electric
This is very difficult to respond to. If anyone is seeking the truth I welcome a phone call so I can explain what really took place. After sitting down with the member I did respond in writting to a three page letter the member had sent me. I responded to all his concerns and he did not want to hear the truth. I asked the member's to attend an arbitration that Angie's List provides and they took that as I was threatening them. They had no problem slandering our good name on here but would not take the next step to resolve the issue. The job took a week longer to finish then what we had hoped for. Most of it was out of our control. For example after we got started on the job we were informed that we could not show up any earlier than 10 am as they liked to sleep in. And when we worked in his garage we had to leave it during the lunch hour when he went in to eat, because he would not let anyone be in his garage when he was not there. Again if anyone has any specific questions regarding this complaint I would be more than happy to discuss. Patrick R Minegar President
