James was punctual and very professional. He is very meticulous in his work. He worked on the door until the fit was perfect. I am already compiling a list of things for him to fix in the future.

James showed great skill and sense of organization while doing the job at our house. First, he was able to detect the problem with an outside door that had been ill-installed at time of construction. He removed the door, frame and trim. He "shimmed' the frame properly and realigned it at level, so the space while closing the door was even and minimal. Prior to James visit, I could see the "light of day" after closing the door resulting in having to push some home -made bands of cloth during winter to avoid cold drafts coming through. Then we could not use the door in winter time. He caulked thoroughly everything, so at this time the door closes snuggly as it should have done in the first place, had it been installed properly. He replaced a soap dispenser which was very "tricky" to get to. He came to my house equipped with the most proper, modern and efficient tools. He was very neat and cleaned after him in a professional manner. His rate is a bit high; however I would call him again in case of need because the man has ideas and he is precise and very handy. In my book, he is the perfect description of a "Handy Man" Thank you James!!!
Description of Work: Install correctly an outdoor door. Caulk all cracks and space under 2 doors and concrete patio. Replace a broken soap dispenser at kitchen sink.

He did a great job laying out and determining where to install the new storage systems. He also had challenges with some of the walls finding studs due to the wall construction. He was able to install all the systems and repair those areas where we made changes from the older storage system. The garage looks great. I would highly recommend John. He is very professional and does quality work.

James is great! He showed up on time (actually about 10 minutes early) and worked the whole day until every job was finished. I'm very pleased and would definitely hire him again.
Description of Work: removed old chandelier and hung new fixture, replaced bulbs in tray ceiling fixtures and outside fixtures too high for me to reach, re-caulked shower stall, re-caulked around tub in upstairs bath, installed dimmer switch, replaced switch in kitchen.

Mr. Altman actually arrived early for the project. He got right to it and quickly found additional rotten wood. He covered the project in detail and provided a solution to repair. He kept me involved in his progress and advised me on how he would be going about building the wall and post back in a more stable condition than originally built. I asked many questions and he was glad to answer. He showed me the materials he would be using and explained how each would be better than original- pressure treated lumber, screws, why he needed to replace a small bit of siding, specialized pvc trim vs. wood, high grade caulking ect ect. He was very clean, organized and professional. Mr. Altman did what he said he would and the quality of the work was obvious. We are very happy with the repair and wouldn't hesitate to refer him to our neighbors and friends.
Description of Work: Mr. Altman was contracted to remove some rotted wood on a screened in porch and apply a solution for preventing this from occuring in the future.

James is very professional. He showed up on time, was very polite and installed the new chandelier and dimmer switch. The new light fixture and dimmer switch work great! JAMES IS VERY REASONABLY PRICED. I received a quote from another "A" listed Angie's List handyman and he quoted $250 to do the same work. James charged $100.

James was on time, professional, and obviously focused on providing a high quality job. He cleaned everything up before departing - leaving the garage in better shape than he found it. I highly recommend James and we will certainly have him back for more projects. On a scale of 1 - 10 with 10 being th best, James rates a 12!!!

James did a great job. He came by first to assess the worklist and provided a broad estimate, then scheduled the work with me. He was on time and worked hard each day he was there (4 days total). He worked around our availability and did an excellent job on all assigned work. James did a lot of different things for us. If he needed materials, either we could buy or he would buy and charge to our credit card (he had providers call us to get the visa number). In most cases, we had him pick up the materials and it made things very easy on us. We are already working on the next "todo" list for James.

It went very well. The guy did the job that I needed to be done. He did a good job with them! It was a high ladder work, so nothing that I could do myself. I haven't been able to find anybody else to do the work. I was happy for him to come out and he'd been able to get it plated for me. In addition, I think, he gave a fair price.
Description of Work: I used James Altman Handyman. I had a piece of siding at the top of my chimney that has blown off, so he reattached that. Also, I had a small piece of shingle that he reattached.

I was concerned I would have to replace my windows and doors due to rot however Mr. Altman showed me that, due to the nature of the window and door construction, he would be able to replace/repair the existing items rather than replace them - this was a huge savings. Mr. Altman took time to educate me regarding the construction and nature of my windows and door frames. Mr. Altman did not bill me for materials, rather, he had the suppliers contact me for payment. Mr. Altman completed the job in the time quoted. Mr. Altman is professional and placed my interests above his own. I am extremely pleased with the result of his work.

I have to be truthful and say James is a nice guy, but I wasn?t so pleased with the services provided. James arrived at my home at 9:45 am. He stated that his charges were $45/hour or $300 for a day. I had three things I wanted done. The first was a window that wouldn?t close. James looked at the window and decided the window lock was a problem. He asked if I would mind a shim under the lock to lift it up so it would lock, I told him that if that was what was needed, then it was alright. The second thing I needed done was a ceiling area under my sunroom (the sunroom juts out over a concrete patio) that had gotten water damage. One and a half sheets of plywood needed to be replaced. James took a look at it and said that it would be cheaper if he just cut out the damaged area on the end and put in another piece of wood, (in his words, ?like a puzzle?) and said that it would be cheaper for me instead of replacing the entire sheet of wood. (If the whole sheet was replaced, it would have looked more uniform with the rest of the area.) The third thing I needed was for some plywood to be placed in the attic so I could store some boxes. James left at 10:30am to go to Home Depot that is 5 miles away. He said that he would get the material and Home Depot?s contractor?s desk would call me and ask for my credit card as payment for the supplies. Home Depot called and told me what the charges were, but some material was out of stock. I asked him to read off the charges and he stated that there was plywood and a pair of gloves. I asked him to put James back on the phone. I asked James why I was paying for gloves. He said that the guy at Home Depot made a mistake, that it was a personal item and that he would pay me back. When I got back on the phone, the guy at the contractor?s desk said that he was never asked to separate the gloves from the order. That made me uncomfortable. James said he had to go to another Home Depot because I didn?t need shims for the window after all, I needed a new sash lock. He said that since it was already after 12:00pm, he would take lunch. He returned at 1:00pm. When he returned he fixed the sash locks and the window was able to close. He then worked on putting plywood in my attic and he cut up a couple of boards to be able to fit them through the opening. The attic is hot and dusty and he asked if I had a dust mask he could have. He had purchased 3/8 x 4 ft. by 8 ft. When I looked at the finished product, it wasn?t what I had envisioned. The area covered is approximately 62 inches long, by 68 inches wide and in one area 92 inches wide. He had put the plywood down, and then in some places, double the plywood to make it sturdier, but didn?t double the plywood on the entire area, it is two different levels. One area of single plywood is lower than another, so it is almost 3 different levels. Although it is only 3/8? it?s enough to trip on if you?re up there. The third area was the ceiling area underneath my sunroom. He cut out the damaged wood and then said he would have to go back to Home Depot to get a 8-foot long 2x4 in order to attach the wood to something and that since it was late in the day, he would come back tomorrow to finish it. I asked why the 2x4?s were needed and he tried to explain it to me, but it just didn?t make sense. IF he had decided not to replace the whole piece of plywood, the smart thing to do would be cut the plywood along one of the joists so you could attach the new piece to something. Secondly, the cut he made was crooked. There was no way a piece of wood would be fit into this area without a LOT of caulking to hide the joints. It would have looked terrible. At this point I told him I would confer with my insurance company and that we would just end this. I didn?t want him working on it any further, and I certainly didn?t want to have to pay for a second day. I paid him for a full day and went and hired someone else.
Description of Work: Replace window locks, place plywood in the attic, attempted to replace plywood under sunroom.

le House Divided a finished basement room into a bedroom and playroom. Built wall between the two areas with door. Made repairs as needed in area walls, ceiling and entrance doorway to garage.
Description of Work: James came our rescue again! Mr. James Altman has been doing work for us for several years and has always done a great job. He has replaced window surrounds, wired in new outdoor lights, repaired plumbing projects, built wooden walk ways, removed floor squeaks, patched dry wall and installed ceiling lights in our kitchen remodel just to list some items. This time our son & family needed a new wall installed in their basement for another bedroom. The project took three days and he worked with several members of the family as our work schedules fluctuated. The room/wall looks great. James also repaired some former owner's building mistakes in construction. He is knowledgeable and easy to work with on projects. When we have another list ready for work, we will call James again. I forgot to mention the several times he has helped us address repairs due to squirrels. I recommend working with James.

Very pleased with his work and will hire again.
Description of Work: I hired James to correct issues with my staircase railing. The original installation was not done properly and caused the railing and post to be loose and unsafe. He was able to secure the post and also installed additional stair railings that were much needed as I was recovering from an injury at the time. He was also nice enough to assist with another item that wasn't on my original wish list, and I truly appreciated his willingness to help!

James came out to give me an estimate and was extremely punctual, he charged $300 for everything (except for the replacement siding). I did get another estimate that was significantly higher, so I went with him. We have been renting this house for two years and now we are moving so we needed to repair/replace things. We had previously removed the back door and put a new one in (one that we had installed an automatic doggie door into). James removed the one we put in and replaced it back to the original door that came with the house. We also installed a dog ramp for our elderly dog, which James also removed for us. We recently got a new puppy, who entertained herself outside by chewing on the siding. Unfortunately, James informed us that they no longer made that type of siding . He got the closest thing he could find, which ended up looking great. He replaced the pieces of siding that were damaged and painted them. It looks great! I was really worried that we would end up losing our security deposit over that. James also repaired two large holes in the garage wall, which also came out perfect. I was very happy with his work and his punctuality. This is my first experience with a contractor that actually showed up on time. We are moving into our newly built home in a few weeks, and we will definitely be using James again.

James was hired to replace some fascia boards that were showing decay. We discussed using plastic in these areas (Azek Frontier Trim 3/4 x 7 1/4 x 8 inches) instead of wood because the cut areas come in contact with the roof and is subject to constant moisture from dew and rain. He also checked areas along our outside window sills damaged by Carpenter Bees. He used a special product and application technique to repair the sill, which required multiple applications and drying time. Once sanded and painted, you could not even tell it had been damaged. He removed my basement exterior door and install a new sweep. The basement door now closes better than it did when it was first installed. He came prepared with tools, all materials and with tall ladders that would reach the highest areas of our roof. His work was impeccable. James likes to understand what his customer's expect, and when he finishes any job, he makes sure that his customers are pleased with his work. He typically works alone unless he believes assistance will be needed. His total labor cost was $300 for a full day's work. Materials cost $89.61. I will definitely have him back to take care of additional work needed. ***He noticed my new roof installed recently by "Atlanta Roofing Specialists" found on Angie's List and remarked what an excellent they had done--noting specific things they had done indicative of a company that takes pride in their work and does not cut corners. That made me feel really great knowing he felt my roof was well done!
Description of Work: James' work was excellent. I am delighted to have someone that I can trust to do an excellent job no matter what the task. He stays busy so you must expect him to work you into his schedule as well as into yours.
