 + 0 moreBill was easy to reach on the phone. He provided an estimate promptly and showed me photographs of the top of the chimney so I could understand exactly what needed to be done. I appreciated how he told me some possibilities for what I might do and then also told me what he would do if it were his chimney (this included suggesting ways in which I could save money, which is always nice!). After I accepted his bid, he did the job very promptly and then visited my house in the evening to show pictures of the new chimney top. Bill struck me as a knowledgeable and skillful worker, and also a nice guy. I would definitely hire him again. (And, I hired him the first time based on reviews from Angie's List).
Description of Work: I had a crumbling chimney crown that Bill rebuilt. Also, the bricks near the top of the chimney need repointing (some spots were so bad that Bill was able to pull bricks off the chimney with little effort!). He also added some "sloped joints" to the bricks layers at the top of the chimney to encourage water to flow off better. He also patched some spots lower on the chimney (for free).

 + 1 moreBill did exactly what he said he was going to do in the time that he said he would do it. There has been a lot of rain here lately but he still managed to figure out how to work around the weather and complete everything. He did an excellent job on all three projects for a good price. I would confidently recommend him.
Description of Work: We have a 50 + year old Cape Cod house and there were three parts to our project. First: Water was leaking through the ceiling of the foundation alcove where our well pump was located in the basement and there was some damage to the cement lintel support for this alcove. The alcove had to be dug up from the outside where it connected to the foundation to inspect the top and sides and to determine how water was entering the foundation. Once Bill could see that the cement roof of the alcove did not cover the blocks on the side walls completely to the edges (water was going right into the top of block), he could see how water was leaking through into the basement. He cleaned the cement surfaces and dug down the sides of the block walls and applied a coat of cement adhesive and Mel Rol fabric to the outside top and down the sides of the alcove. Soil was then put back on to cover foundation and alcove. He used hydraulic cement to repair the lintel of the alcove inside. Second: Block chimney (for oil burner) was too short to meet code, flashing was inadequate, paint was coming off the block, and there was no cap. Bill erected scaffolding to the chimney and cut the flashing into the joints of the chimney, he set four more courses of block on top to meet code. He lined it, reset brick trim, and installed a cap. He applied two coats of elastomeric paint to the chimney and caulked channels where chimney joined siding from top to ground. Third: Cement pad (10' X 14') at back door was crumbling and steps to door were too short and awkward to use. Bill installed rebar and epoxy to all cracks and cleaned and etched the old cement pad in preparation for resurfacing. He reformed the existing 2 steps to make them bigger and safer. He resurfaced the cement pad completely.

Twice he left me waiting here for the estimate. After the second time he never he even called to set up another time, let alone apologize for never arriving and not calling.

 + -1 moreMy husband and I had been searching for a mason to put stone veneer on our fireplace. We found Bill on Angie's list and are so glad we did. He returned my initial phone call within the hour and was here the next day to give us an estimate. From our first phone call to the end of the job he was nothing but friendly and professional. He was very responsive, always called when he said he would and was on time. After the initial estimate, he told us it would be dependent on the weather due to other projects that were weather sensitive which was no problem. He came out the next week with his helper and they completed the job in one day, as he had anticipated. He is very experienced, very knowledgeable, and the price was right! He also took his time and you can tell he really takes pride in his work! When the job was done, it was as if the stone magically appeared because there was NO MESS!! (which to me is VERY important!) He cleaned up after himself and it was as though he had never been here. Very professional! I would highly recommend Bill for any masonry project!

 + -1 moreThey did excellent work. They were very timely. Unfortunately when they contacted us to start the work we had two weeks of rain but he kept in contact with us through phone. He made sure he kept in contact with us. He and a worker came out and they were very neat, tidy and respectful of us. They got the work done in a timely manner and cleaned up after themselves. They didn’t leave their tools lying around or leave a big mess for us. Their estimate was almost dead on with what the bill actually was, which we appreciated. He even came on a Sunday because our schedules weren’t matching up so he took time away from his family, which we really appreciated.

I'm glad I did - really superior work. Professional, on time, friendly, great clean-up and Bill knows it all. A true mason. The work is excellent. He used proper repair materials and did not cut any corners - most important, at least for us, is that he loves his profession. He is excited about repairing and bettering your home. Its an enthusiasm that enhances the work - Bill spent as much time as I wanted explaining masonry to me. I have a better sense of how to care for my home in the long term thanks to Bill.

 + 1 moreWe chose Bill after reading the many excellent reports on Angie's List. He responded very soon after our phone call and came out to evaluate what needed to be done. He checked the flagstones to see which needed to be replaced and also found some that were loose and needed to be reset. Bill was very professional, thorough and meticulous. Once we received his quote/contract and signed it, the work was soon scheduled dependent on the weather. Bill always kept in touch and let us know when he would be here. The job took a month to finish, because you need to wait 28 days after putting in new grouting until you can seal the patio. Bill also made a suggestion that we might like the wet look seal, which we did choose. It added some to the original quote, but was worth it as we are thrilled with how it looks on the patio. We highly recommend Bill to anyone needing masonry work done. It was a real pleasure to deal with a contractor who is reliable, highly skilled, professional, easy to reach, and fair.

We accepted the contract and Bill came out while we were away and completed the job as promised. When we returned and saw the work we could not have been more pleased, it was as though he had never been there which is what we wanted, the repaired bricks look as they have always been there. I would recommend Bill to anyone, he is a true professional.

 + 0 moreExcellent. I had several contractors at the end of 2009 quote repointing the brick chimney, but with a pair of binoculars and a few steps here and there at the patio of my house. Bill was the only mason who actually got up on the roof and closer to the chimney to take digital pictures and show us what we were actually dealing with in regards to repair. Very thorough and we appreciated that. Once he sent the quote, I asked him to schedule the job. He scheduled the job nearly instantly after threat of bad weather was over. We appreciated his promptness in that matter as well. I have gotten many compliments on how great the chimney looks now. We live in an area where stone is heavily used in foundations, walls and landscaping and I will not hesitant to give my neighbors Bills information shall they need masonry work in the future. We have plans for more masonry work in the future and I would not hesitant to call Bill Baker to complete the work. We were very pleased with his prices, his attention to detail and his professionalism.

 + -1 moreI found Bill through Angie's List and he came over within a day or two of me contacting him to give us an estimate on a brick and concrete retaining wall going down both sides of our front steps, dating to 1929. It was in pretty bad shape, and had some damaged/missing bricks. He took almost an hour during our first meeting just looking everything over and matching mortar shades to the shade of the mortar on the house. He also took a brick sample in order to match replacement bricks. We knew Bill was the one for us because of his meticulous nature and attention to detail, and we were not disappointed. He kept in constant contact with us regarding when he would be starting the job, and when he would be arriving daily. He hit a couple of snags with the job and was able to come up with successful alternatives. He was professional from beginning to end and we are extremely happy with the resulting beautiful retaining wall we have now!
Description of Work: He repaired a brick and concrete retaining wall (dating to 1929) running down either side of our front steps. He repaired the concrete, which was badly cracked and crumbling, and repaired/patched damaged and missing bricks.

 + -1 moreBill Baker came to my home to give me an estimate for inground swimming pool tile repair on Tuesday evening, 6/23/09. He quoted me what I felt was a fair price for replacing the fallen tiles. We set a date for work to be completed that Friday, 6/26/09. He later phoned me and left a message that he had big jobs to finish in Macungie and Jim Thorpe and could not do my job on Friday, but would be at my house that Saturday morning between 8:00am and 9:00am. I was fine with that. Saturday, 6/27/09, arrived. Bill Baker did not. I phoned him at 8:30am to verify the time I could expect him and left a message for him to call me back. He did not show up nor return my call. I phoned him a second time at 10:00am that same morning. Again I could not reach him and left him a second message to please return my call. He did not. Today is Tuesday, June 30, 2009, marking a week since his visit to my home to give me the job estimate/time of service. I have not heard from Mr. Baker. I would not recommend him for masonry services to any of my friends and neighbors. The man is unreliable and totally unprofessional. It's a real shame as he was very personable when he came over to do the estimate.
Description of Work: Mr. Baker never showed up for the job, nor did he call me to offer an explanation or to reschedule.

 + -1 moreOn February 12 2009, we had a tree fall on our house. It damaged the roof and the brick around a window. I joined Angie's list and found Bill's Masonry. His estimate was more than fair, and we hired him for the job. Our house was built in the 1850's, so the brick is old and weathered looking. Bill took the time to match the brick and the mortar, did the job and cleaned up very nicely after he was finished. Unlike other contractors I have hired, Bill was on time, finished the job in the time he said it would take, he even worked in the rain! I highly recommend Bill for any brick or masonry work. We will be using his services over the summer to point some brick and repair a chimney.

It was a project I'd been trying to get quotes on for a month, but contractors just weren't coming out or returning the quotes. He communicated his time-line perfectly explaining the lead time needed for getting the materials. He came at the time and days he said he would and did a VERY nice job! Bill is so friendly, professional, and easy to talk to...not the gruff attitude you get with a lot of contractors. He finished the chimney in the time and at the price he quoted. I'll be using him again for the other work on my property.

 + -1 moreI can't recommend Bill Baker highly enough. Bill is a meticulous craftsman who takes pride in his work and who is willing to go the extra mile to satisfy his customers. Several times during the course of the work, he encouraged us to look over the job, brick by brick, and to let him know if there was anything he missed. He did a great job matching the brick color, and he stained the new mortar repeatedly with walnut juice until it blended in with the old mortar. He even stained the mortar around a back window that we had enlarged 6 years ago--the people who did that job didn't bother to match the new mortar to the old, and the repair stuck out like a sore thumb. I also really appreciated that Bill thoroughly cleaned up at the end of each day. Besides his skill and care, Bill's straightforward and transparent way of doing business makes him an outstanding contractor to work with. After he looked at the job, he promptly emailed a clear, detailed written proposal for the work. He always let us know exactly what he would do, when he would do it, and why he was doing it. We are having a lot of different kinds of work done on our house and have met with many contractors. A couple of the masons we called didn't even call back, and one never showed up for the estimate appointment. Some contractors communicate a "the less the homeowner knows the better" attitude, like they shouldn't have to explain too much, or they are dismissive about concerns and questions. Bill was always respectful and responsive. I would hire him again in a minute!
Description of Work: Bill pointed, faced and patched the bricks at the front of our 1920's house, including the walls and supporting pillars of our front porch. There was extensive water damage to a number of bricks and a lot of crumbling mortar, especially where the prior owner had done a quick and dirty patch job using cement. Bill ground out all the bad mortar and filled the spaces with preservation-quality lime mortar (no cement!). He basically rebuilt a number of crumbling bricks and patched others. It took him a solid 40 hours to complete the job.

 + -1 moreI contacted Bill through the website, explained what we needed and asked him to contact me to set up an appointment for a quote. He got back to me quickly, set the appointment, and showed up on time. It was a small project and I was pleasantly surprised when he indicated he could do the work quickly. After a couple of days he followed up via email to ask if we had made a decision and I gave him the job. He came back a few days later, completed the project (which included removing some of our deck boards to get at the window), cleaned up everything, and took away the old window. The hole has been filled with cinder blocks and mortar. He painted the blocks with water sealant before the job. After everything was closed up, he painted them again, both inside the basement and outside under the deck, completely waterproofing the entire area. We are very satisfied with his work and would definitely call him if we ever need masonry services again.
