First I am Military stationed overseas and I am an "accidental landlord," when my tenants emailed me saying my hot water heater caught fire, I called Mr. Rooter out of desperation, and I was absolutely pleased with everything. The hot water heater was repaired within a few days (parts were needed) and he even went out on a Sunday to assess the Damage, so when my tenants emailed again with a leaky faucet Mr. Rooter was the first person I called. I will review again once the leaky faucet is repaired, but I was very pleased with the service and willingness to work with me.

I called Mr. Rooter (for the second time since the company had been so great before) when the downstairs toilet wouldn't flush and water began backing up in a closet that used to be a bathroom. Trent arrived at 8:00 on July 4 (no extra charge since there weren't any technicians available the day before when I called). He spent a good deal of time troubleshooting before digging in the back yard to reach the sewage pipe. Once he did that, he was able to remove the clog. All along the way, Trent was patient and explained everything he was doing, as well as possible prices. For a while, we thought he was going to have to replace the sewer line, which would have been very expensive. Luckily, though, he was able to remove the clog and charged $517, as opposed to a few thousand to replace the sewer line. As before, Mr. Rooter was punctual and professional. I recommend the company without reservation.

We were in the process of moving, and because of time constraints, my wife refused to consider allowing me to do the job myself. (I had tried in the past, but one of the two major local suppliers [Ferguson's of Savannah], as well as the Moen company representative, incorrectly advised me that our current tub/shower valve -- and its escutcheon and handle -- were no longer manufactured, and that I would have to replace these with an entirely new tub & shower assembly.) The Mr. Rooter tech showed up on time, was courteous and competent, advised me of the price up front, and replaced the core of our old valve assembly within 15 minutes using parts on hand in his truck. When I informed him that I had not been able to acquire an escutcheon / valve handle that would fit, he demurred, stated that these were in fact available, again advised me of the price before doing the work, then departed to purchase the parts from the same supplier who had originally told me they were no longer made. Mr. Rooter's tech returned in a timely manner with the correct parts, and informed me that the supplier had misidentified them, which was why I was unable to purchase them in the first place. In less than 30 minutes he had replaced the escutcheon and handle, turned the water on and checked the performance of the system, and we were once again "operational." Lessons learned: (1), if there is any way to do a $100 job yourself, DO it yourself and save $300; (2), never believe the first supplier who tells you your plumbing component is no longer manufactured -- get a second opinion from another supplier, or get on the web and discuss your needs at a plumbing forum. (3) If your wife insists that a plumber do other than complex emergency work, make sure she is prepared to pay for it out of her own emergency stash.

My water heater wasn't heating water properly (hot water for showers would run out after ten minutes or so, which is no good for a family of four). Trent, the technician, arrived promptly and checked the water heater. He pointed out something I didn't realize, which was the bottom thermostat. He noticed that while the top thermostat was fine, the lower thermostat was set too low. He adjusted it and didn't charge me. He also wrote up an estimate for replacing the coils and thermostats in case we ever needed it. He also looked at a plumbing problem under my sink and gave me some advice. I will use Mr. Rooter in the future. Excellent experience.

The owner responded within an hour or two of our call. Very polite and efficient, but electric snake kept setting off our circuit breaker, he said he'd just bought a used machine and possibly it had a short. He snaked the drain up to a root blockage, when the snake could not go any further (about 50 feet). He then used a camera to scope the line and showed us the roots growing through the line. Advised us to have line dug up & replaced at a cost between $750 - $1250. Or, we could wait until clogged again and call him back. We decided to wait, and wanted to research costs and alternatives. We paid the bill, then realized he'd forgotten to give us the Angie's List discount, which he said we could apply to any further service from Mr. Rooter. All in all, I think the cost was high for the time and effort taken; however, he did respond promptly. We do think his estimate was high for replacement of partial line, so we are trying some alternative methods to kill the roots before spending that amount of $$$$.

Response from Mr Rooter Plumbing of Savannah
We appreciate all reviews! Two minor points need to be addressed so as to provide peace of mind to all Angie's List members that consider calling Mr. Rooter Plumbing. First, I did offer to have the customer re-write the check for the corrected ticket amount after we realized that an Angie's List discount was due. The customer chose to take the discount next visit. I will go ahead and refund them the discount at this time to avoid any future concerns. Second, we use top-of-the line equipment and, that day, I was using equipment/truck of a technician that was off. The power was already off to the plugs at the residence when I first connected my equipment and the GFI breaker tripped another time or two. GFI breakers are the plugs with the test/reset buttons on them. A single GFI plug my control several additional plugs. So if you have a dead plug, but your circuit breaker is one, look for a GFI that may be tripped. These plugs get weak over time and need to be replaced which might be the case here. I have had no electrical issues with that equipment on any other job. Please be assured that all our work/pricing is above board and we do more than any plumber I know to protect your property. Our camera inspection, included in all sewer calls, showed a broken pipe that must be repaired in order to stop future root intrusion. Roots typically grow in from the top and root killer product wash down the bottom of the drain. That type of product, if it even touches that roots is minimally effective while leaving the broken pipe to allow continued root intrusion. Relatedly, we receive calls from customers asking "how much to replace their sewer line" because another plumber "told" them it needed was broken. That could have been the case here if another plumber came to clear the line but didn't use the camera. We are able to locate the exact spot needing repair and minimize the repair cost by fixing only the spot needing repair. Mr. Rooter saves customers money because of our approach to working on your plumbing and by the equipment in which I have invested. We look forward to providing our existing Angie's List customers and future customers with the highest level plumbing service in the area. Mark Jacobs Owner

At 8am on that sunday morning I found the bathroom rug soaking wet. Thinking at first that my husband had taken a shower and climbed out without drying out first, I went to yell at him. He assured me he had done no such thing. We then realized that water was coming from the base of the toilet when it was flushed and the tub in the other bathroom had sewage coming up. yuck! Being a rental we first had to call our landlord, who loved being woken up, to call the home warranty people. The first number they gave us was to someone in Pennsylvania,(we are in Georgia) who would have been more than happy to help us but he would have to charge us for the commute. I called our landlord again and got the direct number to the home warranty and spoke to them. The second number was for someone out in Idaho. And the third never answered the phone it just went to voice mail and it was something like Bubba's plumbing. In which I placed my third call to the warranty people. I was told no other plumber was on their list in our area, I thought this was extremely funny as we had used Mr. Rooter through the warranty on another plumbing issue, when we had first moved into the house. By this time it is after noon and I am given permission to call Mr. Rooter. By the time I was able to call, I was told it might be after 6pm before a technician could be out there since it was a weekend and they only had a limited amount of technicians on duty. I told her no problem. At 4pm I received a call saying the tech was on his way and would be there within 20 minutes. Trent arrived was very polite. Looked over the situation, and gave us two options. He could remove the toilet and snake the drain that way, or go outside and use the clean-out (which would cost $100 less). We went with option two. Trent was finished within an hour and since he did everything from outside there was no mess. He was very polite and courteous. And we now have two working toilets again.

Sewage backed up into the house. Employee came out on a Friday evening without charging extra for a call that was outside normal business hours. He put a camera into the line but could not find the cause because the camera can't be sent around a 90 degree turn. He cleared the line with the belief that there were tree roots in the line near the house. He returned on Monday, found the roots and repaired the line. The repair was done quickly and neatly. It was virtually impossible to see where the lawn had been dug up to make the repair. There was a bit of a communication problem. I told both the operator who took my initial call and the owner that there was a clean-out in front of the house. I was given the impression that the owner would come out himself, not another employee. I was not at the house when the employee (not the owner) came out. He went around to the side of the house where there is another clean-out. Because of this, it took two trips for the line to be repaired and I am truly not sure if the cost would have been less if the problem had been identified and fixed on the first visit. I spoke directly with the owner about the lack of communication concerning the location of the clean-out, necessitating multiple visits for which I paid two separate fees. I was assured that the total cost would have been the same in any case, but I can only take him at his word since, obviously, two trips with two charges were made. I have an innate distrust of trade people in general due to the fact that I have had multiple negative experiences with them recently so this could be tainting my review.

Service was prompt, efficient, professional, and well done. The price was higher than I expected, it took about 2 hrs. I gave my credit card information to them for payment, however due to an error I was not charged for the service. This went unnoticed until April 2013, at which point I was contacted and checked my bill to see that indeed the charge was never made. So now, 5 months later I am billed, which is inconvenient to say the least. The work was good, however due to the pricing and billing problems I will not use them again.

I called Mr. Rooter initially because one of our tub drains was draining very slowly and to flush our hot water heater (I had so much sediment in it that it would not drain for me). A technician showed up that afternoon after I called (turned out to be the owner) and by then I had decided to also have him install a new kitchen faucet. When he was inspecting the kitchen sink where the faucet would go he saw that our garbage disposal was severely corroded and recommended having it replaced. Since we were not living in the house at the time and nothing was urgent he gave an estimate for everything and arranged for one of his other plumbers to come out the following day to do everything. As he put it, it is better for the employees to get the work than him, implying to me that he has a genuine concern that his employees make money. The thing that sold me forever on this company and owner was before he left he gave me a suggestion to try and clear the tub drain (remove vent cover, plug rag in it and then use a plunger in the reverse mode to try and clear the blockage). He said that way if it worked we would not have to pay for that the following day. Lo and behold that evening I tried his instructions and the tub drain was cleared! Any business that offers a solution that the customer might try first, for something that they could easily charge a customer for, will get my business all the time. The following day the plumber, Richard, arrived on time and did a great job on everything. He cleaned up after all his work and used his time efficiently. I had a follow up call the following week because we seemed to not be getting the normal amount of hot water we had before. Richard was dispatched to our home within an hour of the call and adjusted the thermostats up a little bit. Fixed the problem and there was no charge to us for that visit.

The water heater saga. Not all related to Mr. Rooter, but it is germane to the work that was done. Last Wednesday I finally got around to hiring a plumber to reroute the gas line for our natural gas grill. He was an old crusty sole ( not Mr. Rooter), but really seemed to know what he was doing. Not only did he run a new line he cleaned up a couple of lines that the previous owner had put in. He made everything look much neater and probably more efficient. Before he left he made sure the the hot water heater and all the other appliances that use NG had their pilots lit and were running. Then the trouble began. Thursday morning I get up, after missing two days of school with a horrible stomach bug, looking forward to a nice hot shower to get the day started. Never happened, I relit the pilot on the hot water heater, told my wife how lucky she was that SHE was getting a nice hot shower, got ready for school and left. That evening she tells me she had a thrilling COLD shower, so I call the original plumber and explain what happened and he says it has to be something wrong with the the water heater. I thought it a strange coincidence that a perfectly good water heater (only 8 yrs old) would throw a weak flame only after the work he did. But we both concluded that there was not really anything he could do since he really didn't work with water heaters, and I should call the manufacturer to see if there was a part that had gone bad. There was the first mistake. Friday I call a different plumber (who installs our brand) only to discover they will "try" to make it out here by the end of the day to take a look and will get back to me. Needless to say I never heard back from them. Saturday, after residing ourselves to not having a hot shower for at least another couple of days (what plumber works on weekends) I called MrRooter. Fantastic people, had a guy out here by 11:00 am. I explained the entire story, he lit the pilot as I did and watched the heater do exactly what it had been doing, light for about 15 seconds, then shut of. He concluded that it was a worn thermocouple and could run to Home Depot about a mile away, grab one and install. Of course that wasn't the problem (it wouldn't be a saga if the fix was that easy). We discussed options and decided it must be the control panel and since the heater is 8 yrs old, it would be more cost effective if we replaced it. Two hours later a new heater in place we light it, see everything lights, and settle up on the bill. After he leaves I go to the unit and try to look in the window to see the pilot and can't. Like an idiot, I assume that I just can't see it, and wait for the water to heat up. Another two hours go by and still no hot water. I decide to see if I need to relight the pilot, and do. THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPENS, LIGHTS WITH A WEAK FLAME AND THEN AUTO SHUTS OFF AFTER 15 SECONDS! Call MrRooter and explain. I get the local owner on the phone and he is just as perplexed and sends the first guy back. Now we know there must be something wrong with the line, but what. I hypothesize it may be a damaged valve, the tech thinks there is debris in the line. He connects a pressure gauge to the heater and we see that obviously it is not getting enough pressure (why didn't we think of that right away; kind of like "is it plugged in"). He takes the line off, blows and a little dust comes out, not the problem. He then shuts the gas off to the house and disconnects the valve. As he takes it off, he turns it over and good size pile of dust pours out. He reconnects everything, pressure tests the line and now everything is fine. We had hot water within 30 minutes. So what happened? I believe the original plumber in rerouting everything shook up 50 years of galvanized pipe innards only to fall on a closed valve. Plumbers spend most of their time running water pipe and the dust that gets shook up simply gets washed away when you turn the water back on; NG does not have enough mass to do this. So we have a new water heater that wasn't really needed, but in the long run we noticed a bit of rust forming on the one he took out, so it was going to have to be replaced soon anyway. I wish I would have insisted that it must have been something to first guy did, but even the other two plumbers did not think of the dust and thought something had simply gone wrong coincidently. Lesson learned? Always check to see if it is plugged in first. Mr. Rooter was very professional in what they did. My only disappointment was that he only did the "standard" troubleshooting, bad thermocouple, bad control panel, then replace the heater. No real careful analysis of the problem: not enough gas getting to the heater.

The service representative was knowledgable, professional and pleasant. I had every confidence that he knew what to do to fix the issue. My concern was if I was getting a fair price for the service. In hindsight I would have preferred to be given the option of paiying a service charge and receiving instructions from the servicing agent on how to complete the repair. The repair was just that simple - I could do it. After he left, I felt I paid too much for the service. It would be nice to give the servicing agent authority to charge a fee comparable to the services rendered.
Description of Work: My toilet leaked on occassion. At the time I called for help with the leak I had the water turned off because I didn't want the bathroom to flood. It seemed the leak occured whether the toilet was flushed or just sitting. The Rooter service agent took a quick look and immediately recognized the problem. The top of the intake valve was missing. He suggested the leak could have come from the water splashing on the lid and dripping off the lid to the floor. The necessary part was not available on the truck. The service agent offered to rebuid the toilet with parts of a inferior quality or pick up original parts. I was told the price of the repair to rebuild or to replace the parts. The price was the same - $175 before the Angie's List discount. It was the lowest fee he could charge whether he worked for 5 minutes or 1 hour. Of course, I wanted the original parts for the toilet. The service agent offered to pick up the parts from their supplier and returned to fix the toilet. The actual time to fix the toilet was about 5 to 10 minutes. Although the agent went to get the parts and repaired the issue I don't think the price fit the repair. I will be hesitant to call this organization again for minor repairs.

The plumber arrived on time, completed the task quickly and addressed all of our questions/concerns. Mr. Rooter does charge by the job, not by the hour but overall the price seemed fair. We recently moved from the north to a warmer climate area where houses don't normally have basements. There were things in the new house we hadn't seen before (i.e. hot water tank on the top floor in a closet, outside sprinkler system). The plumber spent time answering our questions and advising us on what maintenance issues we should look out for. We would definitely use this company again and would especially like to have the same plumber -- Richard Herster.
Description of Work: The plumber picked up 2 toilets we purchased from a home improvement company; installed both of them and 2 new shower heads. Prior to the plumber's arrival we had removed 2 toilets and installed new flooring in both bathrooms, so it was important the plumber arrive as scheduled.

Don't hire them. They charge by the job, not the hour like most plumbers.
Description of Work: install a new disposal and see if a toilet could be repaired. While the disposal could have been repaired, it would have cost more to do it than replace. The repair would have taken 1 minute by the repairman. The toilet could have also been repaired, but just to say he could not repair it cost us 55.00. This was outrageous.

Response from Mr Rooter Plumbing of Savannah
We, at Mr. Rooter, value all comments. The positive reviews are encouraging and affirm that we are helping our customers as we set out to do. The negative reviews show opportunities for us to improve. This review was the first time we became aware of any issue with the work performed and we immediately contacted Member to address her concerns with the reviewed repairs. In this response, I will not presume to respond for Member's opinions after our discussions, but I will lay out the information from Mr. Rooter's perspective. We will address the final concern expressed by Member first as it lays the foundation for all that follows. Mr. Rooter provides up-front pricing for almost all (99%+) of work performed. The prices are predetermined and published in our Menu Price Guide to provide customers the comfort of knowing the cost prior to starting a repair. If a repair is going to exceed the agreed upon price due to unforeseen circumstances, then the technician will stop and give a full explanation and a revised price before proceeding. No one likes surprises. The only surprise we want for our customers is over the high quality of workmanship and respect that comes from working with Mr. Rooter Plumbing, Member called us out to address an issue with her disposer. We provided a written price to "clear and reset" the disposer in advance of performing any work. Member had already purchased a replacement disposer and asked, instead, that we install the customer supplied disposer. The technician crossed out the "clear and reset" recommendation and gave a price to install the disposer. Member agreed and the disposer was changed out. The old disposer was examined and it is the technicians opinion that the old unit could have been made functional with the "clear and reset" originally recommended and declined by the customer. All of this is in writing. Next, Member asked that we clear her toilet. Our technician showed her the pricing to do the additional task and she agreed. All work recommended or performed was explained in advance and the price agreed to prior to starting the job. Additionally, Mr. Rooter Plumbing provides a "Customer Advantage Plan" which is similar to a maintenance agreement for the plumbing system in a customers home. The benefits of the plan are: 1) priority dispatching for emergencies, 2) 10-15% discount on any repairs performed and 3) an annual plumbing safety checkup. This plan covers 3 or 5 years. Many customers are so pleased with Mr. Rooter that they purchase this plan knowing that we will be there to meet their future plumbing needs. Member purchased this plan. After our follow up contact with Member, we offered to refund her Plan purchase which she accepted. We regret any situation in which a customer is less than totally satisfied and we appreciate being given the opportunity to resolve any problems with the service provided. It went well. The repair person was on time and was careful to ensure he didn't track in anything into the house by donning booties and using his own mat even with the rain. He listened to the problem and reviewed our options for repair. Although we didn't have a clean out valve on ground level, he realized he could use the manhole to access the pipe without removing the toilet which saved us about $100.00 on the repair. He really didn't try to push us into a higher priced repair and completed the service within an hour. Everything went well and the only reason that I didn't give them 5 stars was the repair person, while polite overall, seemed more like a technician doing a task then a experienced, knowledgeable plumber. For this situation that wasn't important, but I don't think I would have trusted him to remove the toilet to snake the drain or solve any more complicated problem then we experienced.
Description of Work: My toilets and shower/tubs were draining slowly due to a build-up of sludge in the sewer pipe and the repair person cleared the obstruction.

They informed me that since I'm a new homeowner and because of the location of the leak, that the City may have been able to take care of the repair. I called and they did! I was also credited on my bill for past leakage. I will DEFINITELY call them for plumbing repairs in the future!
Description of Work: I made an appointment for potential outside water leakage.

The receptionist and dispatcher was very professional and helpful and was able to get someone out the same day. Troy was the technician and he gave me a couple of options for getting what I needed done. I wasn't looking to spend that much to fix the problem but what a friend (who owns a plumbing business in Texas) told me and what he told me completely jived so I was confident with his options. I had a really old set of pipes/valves with an uncommon spread (distance between the faucets/pipes) but he was able to find a set here locally on Friday and we scheduled for him to come back Monday am and he was here right on time. The job took about 3.5 hours and the work was very good. I will use these guys again.

The experience was painless. They're extremely friendly and prompt. Communication was very good. The technician was on time, installed the dishwasher and even cleaned up the little water that was spilled in the process. I had a wonderful experience with Mr. Rooter. Ill gladly call them with any other plumbing needs I have in the future.
