We have been with them for quite sometime. We had some problems with the system and we had a little problem getting it resolved. They were just getting so expensive and we wanted to go to a wireless security system. They were just very, very expensive, so we started looking at other company. The price was really high. The people who came out and did the actual work were very professional. The office staff was miserable.

The sales repressentative came over to discuss a home security system. I asked about the back-up plan/system to their monitoring system. I asked this because if the system failed, I wanted to know what their back up plan/system was. He stated that it wouldn't fail and wouldn't provide any information on the back up system. He stated again that it wouldn't fail and got up and left.

After some initial research, we had two local security companies visit us to quote a home security system. Ackerman was the second to visit us. At first I was hesitant to call Ackerman, due to poor reviews from other Angie's List subscribers, but I had two trusted friends (who are in technical/engineering fields) relate positive experiences with the company, so I was willing to at least have Ackerman provide a quote. The person from the first company (not Ackerman) who visited was nice, but came across as a high-pressure salesperson with little technical knowledge and in fact wouldn't even discuss a shorter monitoring term than 3 years (to get the low rate they advertised). The experience with Ackerman was completely different. The Ackerman consultant who visited us, Chris Averitt, was prompt and professional. At no time did he use any high-pressure sales tactics. Instead, he spent a lot of time discussing my specific needs, including discouraging us from going overboard with extra security sensors that he believed we did not need (these sensors are expensive). He was able to quote crime statistics to back up his recommendations. After his sales visit, my family came up with some additional questions, which I emailed to Chris at around 9 PM that evening. Within about 30 minutes, he responded to my questions. I didn't expect answers until the next day, and I was impressed that he was still checking emails into the evening. Afterwards, we decided to go with Ackerman. Chris' second visit was to fill out paperwork, and again he was on time and professional. Ackerman was able to schedule the install very quickly. The technician who came to install the system, Scott Shoemaker, was also prompt and professional. He did very nice, clean work in routing the wiring required (most of the system was wireless). He took pains to install the sensors in such a way that they were aesthetically pleasing. He explained how the system worked, including going over a couple of issues more than once that we had trouble understanding. We have not had time yet to deal with customer service after the system was installed, but the purchase and installation was great and based on that I recommend Ackerman.
Description of Work: We received quotes for a new home security system plus monitoring, and had the system installed.

The consultant, James, was very helpful and knowledgeable. When the technician came out yesterday, I noticed he was an independent contractor. That worried me a bit. Fortunately, I did not need to worry. Fred did a terrific job and was a pleasure. Everyone showed up on time and was very professional and polite THANKS ACKERMAN!!!!

They gave me a bad service. I was very unsatisfied with them. They did automatic withdrawal of their service charges from my bank account when I was using them. They charged $19 a month. However, even after I had stopped services, they kept drawing money. It was just a total mess. I wrote to their central office complaining about them, which didn’t do any good. I got my money back though, finally. They wrote back saying that the refund check is in the mail. It didn’t have to go that far, first of all. They did alarm monitoring; anything else would cost me extra money. My previous company wrote me a letter notifying me that they were sold to Ackerman and Ackerman will be my security company, that's all. They were supposed to come out and give us window stickers and put a sign in the yard but they never did. The company just completely just ignored me. I called them several times and they never came out. Then one day the alarm went off and I couldn't get to the phone on time so I disabled the alarm. I waited for a minute just to see how fast they called back and they never called back. So I called them to complain and they said that they never got the signal. I told them that there must be something wrong and that they need to come out and look at it. I thought they should come and fix whatever it was as per my subscription with them. However, they said that they would come out for a $70 trip charge and a $125 per hour service charge. That’s when I switched them. There were a lot of other things like they never returned phone calls. When I talked to them, they had promised that they would call me back but they never did. They were just very unprofessional. They didn’t respond to problems. They weren’t alarmed when the signal went off. I was alarmed, I was yelling at them. I was thinking what if I had a burglar or if somebody had broke and was holding me a hostage. They should be very alarmed that they didn’t get the signal. That is why I was giving them money. They were just not bothered by it. I would never use them again.

I called Ackerman to see what the additional monthly monitoring cost would be. The customer service rep said she could not answer this. I asked why a she said she did not know. Well after pushing the issue she stated $23..95. I set up an appointment for 11/18 so their sales guy to come look at my system. The sales guy showed up at the appointed time. He was very professional and explained three pricing plans. Why the CSR could not quote these is beyond me. Anyway, he set the install for 11/23 in the morning. Well 11/23 rolls around and nobody has shown up. I call the CSR line and the young lady tells me after several minutes that there is no record of me on any schedule. She then proceeds to place me on hold and disconnects the call. However, she does call me back and apologizes. She then informs me that my appointment is 11/25 not 11/23 and in the afternoon. I told her that I have 11/23 in writing and would not even be here the afternoon of 11/25. To make a long story short, I accepted 11/25 and requested an early afternoon appointment. Come 11/25, I had to place a third call to the CSR and ask if the installer would be here early afternoon only to be told between 1 and 5pm - what? Finally the installer showed around 11am and did a great job and very professional. Kudos to sales and installation. Ackerman's problem seems to be with their CSR staff. Maybe a little retraining in customer care is in order.

The sales representative that came to my home was great -- or so I thought. She sold me a system with incompatible parts. The installer that came assumed that I knew things were incompatible. Of course I did not. Then he tried to install a keypad that was malfunctioning. He promised he'd be back the next day. The next day turned into next week... The installer ended up putting in a different keypad and tried to convince me that I didn't NEED the one I PURCHASED and PAID FOR THREE WEEKS before his visit. He did not clean up the old equipment nor the extra debris that the new system install produced. The old components were just left randomly. I've been back and forth with them about all of this for MONTHS now. Well here it is THREE months later... I STILL don't have what I paid for... Installer #2 appointment was for 12-4. The installed calls me at 7:24 AM saying he is in route to my home. I explained that I asked for 12-4 not 7AM. He got snippy and said "do you want me to come or not?". REALLY? Come on. NOW. Then I get a call 20 minutes later saying that he just realized that he had the wrong part and had to go to the office to get the correct part. I was ANGRY. And I started to tell him why. BUT HE HUNG UP on me. I take a minute to calm down. Then about 10 minutes later my doorbell rings. I answer and ask for the number to his supervisor so that they know he hung up on me. His response -- Oh I didn't hang up- my phone dropped the call. Well if your Phone dropped then why didn't you call back?? I wanted this to be over so I let him in to complete everything. So then he never gets the number and proceeds to start taking the part out of the box. I ask again for the number and he starts dialing somebody on his phone. I am LIVID at this point. He decides he doesn't feel comfortable and proceeds to leave with the part. He is then on the phone with someone trying to recant a "cleaned up version" of the events. I have been on hold waiting for a supervisor for 7 minutes now.... If I could get my old system back I would and ask for my money back. But I can't. I cannot just walk away when I've paid almost $900 for a system that they did not fully install. Oh but they've been deducting the monitoring fee out regularly... Regardless of the outcome, I will NEVER recommend Ackerman Security to ANYONE based on this horrible on-going experience.
Description of Work: Ackerman may be the cheapest monitoring and it may work great, but DON'T need ANY new parts WHATSOEVER... Why you ask? Because their installation department is HORRIBLE. They only work on assumptions. They assume the sales person told you this. They assume that you know that. They assume you want it installed this way. They assume 15 mins is enough leeway to let you know they are on the way (with the WRONG part). If you need ANY equipment -- DON'T go with Ackerman.

The situation is still not resolved and they are still sending monthly billings for service when I am not getting service.
Description of Work: I have been a long time customer. My experience with the service technician and the customer service was unprofessional and a waste of time. I accidentally set off my alarm. I didn’t receive a call from the monitoring group, so I called to see why. I was told no signal came in and I was instructed to do a test. The test results didn’t send a signal, so we scheduled a service call. I wasn’t able to have a Tech come out until a week later 9/9/11. On Wednesday, 9/7/2011, I received 3 calls from Ackerman’s monitoring people. The fact that the signal went through when I didn’t set my alarm is a mystery. I rushed home from work and my alarm was not sounding so no disarming was necessary. When I called, no one could explain why the signal went through. Friday, 9/9/11, an Ackerman Technician came out. He was unable to explain why a signal went to the monitoring station on Wednesday, but determined I had a Brinks System and the dialer was not dialing out. He tested signal/no signal. He suggested that Brinks/ADT was responsible since it was their equipment and proprietary. If that’s the case, why has Ackerman been my security company since before 2005? It is the same system and per their advertising they provide service using other company’s equipment. Has that changed? When I called to cancel my monitoring system, I spoke to a Associate. I explained the above and she talked to her Supervisor . She explained the Supervisor was familiar with the situation and she would call be later today to resolve. In addition, the Customer Service Rep, said she would call me back as well to confirm I received good customer service and to confirm the service charge of $79.95 was zeroed out. This never happened.I appreciated this since I was unhappy with the Service Tech, who was in my house about 10 minutes tops and didn’t offer me a solution other than to purchase an upgraded system. This option makes no sense since my system works, but signal is now not going through to Ackerman. I didn’t receive the promised follow up calls. Later @ 5:30 PM, I spoke with another “Customer Service” Rep.. I asked her to have the original CSR to call me, but she insisted she could help me and insisted I tell her what happened. Reluctantly I went through the story again and she insisted she could help me. The phone call was very frustrating. She told me that ADT/BRINKS hacked into my system. How does she know this? Did ADT/BRINKS send a notification they were compromising my safety by interrupting my system when I am paying good money to Ackerman to monitor my system? Who is responsible in notifying the customer my service is no longer in service? This CSR must have determined she couldn’t help me and switched my call to another “Supervisor”. I was asked again to explain my situation again. This was very irritating since I told my story a number of times. She proceeded to tell me I needed to have Ackerman come out and upgrade my system to Ackerman equipment. I am not in a financial position to spend additional money on a new system, when the system I have appears to be working. Finally the Supervisor, agreed to cancel my monitoring contract since it just renewed on 8/6/2011. She requested my email address so she could send me the necessary information. Well…..I never received an email and when I looked up my account it is still showing as active. I have requested via letter sent to Mr. Tully's attentions: 1. Cancel my contract since you cannot provide service and are not able to fulfill you part of the contractual agreement. 2. Refund the $79.95 service charge or at the very least pro rate the charge for the amount of time the technician was here. 3. Provide me with confirmation; ADT/BRINKS hacked into my system. I have not heard anything from Ackerman nor ADT/BRINKS warning me my safety and alarm system has been compromised. Again, you are leaving yourself open for a lawsuit if something had happened to my family while on your watch. 4. If I was ADT/BRINKS, I might consider your representatives as slandering them, by telling me ADT/BRINKS hacked my system. Or were you using their equipment illegally? I have confirmation you cash my payments.

After a case of personal identify theft, we felt the need to better secure our home in addition to our accounts and information. We spoke with Ackerman Security Systems in April, along with one other company. In the end, we chose Ackerman due to their alarm system design specific for our house and the comfort we felt with our Security Consultant, Matt Harvey. Ackerman was very competitive with the other company we evaluated. Installation was scheduled for 5/13/2011, and the installation technician showed up within the specified window of 8-10 AM. He was very knowledgeble and quickly went to work after we walked the house to get him familiar with the layout, crawl space, attic, etc. He spent about 4 hours wiring the house, installing equipment and going over the operation of the system with me. I was extremely impressed with the work he did, being able to completely route the wiring so that it was hidden form sight. He made it look easy to retrofit an existing house. If I choose to add additional security features to add on to my now existing system, I will not hesitate to contact Ackerman again to install the new equipment.

The installation went reasonably well with the only exception, a glass breakage sensor was installed too low and every time I closed a certain kitchen drawer the alarm would go off. Our issues started with our renovation. Evidently you need to call the security company out to disable the system before a renovation. I had only called to suspend the service until the renovation was complete and no one informed me that they needed to come out to disable the system. About half way through the project I called Ackerman to send someone out to install new wiring. I was informed that all the wireless equipment I had just purchased was no longer working because it had not been disabled properly. Ok not sure how I missed that but it is what it is. About 4 months later I discovered they had been charging me for monitoring the entire year of the renovation. It had been on a credit card and l hadnt noticed the charges until they sent me a late notice because the card on file had been lost by me and a new one issued. The woman who answered the phone about the bill was the rudest person I believe I've ever had to deal with. They had no knowledge of the fact that I had called. Told me that I would have had to fax in my request. A year later I can't remember if I did or didn't. I asked about the fact that they had a representative over to my house during the renovation to look at rewiring. I was told in essence that one hand does not talk to the other. All in all I have paid this company for two years of monitoring, and all new equipment. What I have now is no equipment and 8 months of monitoring that I actually used. I need to find another company but I will not ever sign another contract.

Bought a new house in May that had not been hardwired for security. I have used Ackerman before and been happy with their monitoring services. They installed a hybrid wired/wireless system and the install was smooth and the technician quite professional. No problems with monitoring services yet (we have accidentally triggered the alarm ourselves and have recieved prompt attention from the monitoring service).

Watch out !!! 1st I did not like the installer they sent - a husband and wife team that were independent contractors ( not even ackerman people .. they showed up in crummy little dumpy truck with no ackerman branding... ) I received very little help or training after they finished the install .. it was after 6pm also. The Iphone stuff has never worked and no one will come out and fix it. Now my dog's bark sets off the glass break every few days... I called Kent Bliss the install manager 3 times after the holidays because i wanted to get this fixed before the 1 year warranty expired. He is never returned a call... today they would not give me any supervisor to speak with .. I tried to leave a message for the company president with his assistant. I am amazed at the other reports where I see management will not return calls but take this to be correct and avoid using them.. they advertise a big game but do not deliver on the service!
Description of Work: A full replacement alarm system including mobile system for my iphone and even extras like basement water monitors. They sold me upgrades on every level ... louder alarm speaker .. iphone apps, wireless cellular monitoring ... you name it and I likely bought the upgrade package..

Still waiting for a call from Ackerman Security management.
Description of Work: We have used Ackerman for over 10 years, we updated our system about 6 months. The technician came and did the update, however, on leaving he did not set one of the keypad entries into home. (They had been set for entry for 10 years). When I called Ackerman I asked them if they could send a technician over to my home to reset the 2 entries (keypad entry) to how it was originally set before they did the update. They refused to come out to my home unless I paid the $100 service fee. I have asked for the manager to return my call at least 2 x so I could discuss this with them, but he has not had the courtesy to do so. The error was made by Ackerman's technician so I couldn't understand why I had to pay for the service call. After 10 years I was amazed by their customer service. There are many other security companies out there so when my contract comes up for renewal in December, I will be dropping Ackerman Security.

Quite frankly, the only reason I have tolerated Ackerman for this long is due to the price being much cheaper than the national alarm companies, and the fact they are a reasonably large firm. I am leery of the small local firms, but I am thinking of switching. The people who actually DO the monitoring are very competent and I've never had a problem with them not calling or the monitoring failing. After a rocky start with the sales staff, and the installers, that has improved. I had to have the alarm fixed by a technician about a year ago due to a painter that had broken it. It went off without a hitch. I used to have a lot of issues with the service group, but to their credit, they have done well when they have come out in recent years. My beef with Ackerman is the people who run it. They are truly unprofessional. The only reason I didn't give them an F is due to the work of the rank and file. I spoke with Jim Callahan the COO (VP of Sales at the time) and he became belligerent because I was complaining about the service staff. He sent a technician out and the technician had left a copy of a work order on my counter. I picked it up and it read, "See if you can fix this "gentleman's" problem." The word gentleman in quotation marks set me off. Clearly this was an insult. I called him to ask what he meant by that, he never apologized, never explained why he did what he did. He just kept asking me how I got hold of the work order. He accused me of going through the technician's documents. I did no such thing. The guy left it on my counter. Clearly Jim was embarrassed he got caught. My guess is he routinely insults his customers. After no explanation and no apology, I went all the way to the top, I contacted Bruce Turry. When I got hold of Bruce to complain about Jim, he never apologized for Jim's actions. He said he didn't understand what the problem was, Jim wrote fix this gentleman's problem, which is what he did. I told Bruce it was an insult to write gentleman in quotes. Bruce said that it wasn't an insult. I asked why did he use quotes? What was he trying to get across? Bruce said it didn't mean anything. I thought that was even more insulting than the original insult. I told him that Ackerman was the most unprofessional company I had ever encountered, and the customer-is-always-wrong attitude that they both had made it a mystery to me how they could stay in business. Bruce said, "Your monitoring service works doesn't it?" I said, "Yes." He then said, "Then what difference does it make what you think of the sales or management staff as long as the alarm service works?" Quite frankly, I was speechless at that point. I told them I hoped that I never talk to either one of them again and hung up. So, here I sit. Still a customer after that simply because if I switched to ADT or Brinks or whoever, my cost will double. Sadly, Bruce did have a point. As unpleasant and unprofessional as their management staff is, they still manage to keep the alarm service working. I guess the ends justify the means.

We had problems from the start. Installers (sub-contractors) left bits of wire and trash everywhere they worked, installed the wrong (lower cost than those specified in the sales contract) keypads, and failed to connect either the Xanboo or cellular system (rendering the system more or less pointless). Several days later the cellular was hooked up. Several weeks later the Xamboo was hooked up... though it failed to function correctly. Of all the Xanboo functionality Ackerman promised (remote management via phone, smart phone, internet, and remote alarm notification), only remote internet management has ever worked (and that only after several more calls/service visits). It has now been about 6 months since the system was installed. After too many phone calls and service visits to count, the ($300) Xanboo still has all the same issues. Additionally, one of my alarm zones has apparently failed, so I have to bypass it every time I want to set the alarm (lots extra key sequences to press and no protection for that zone). It will at least 4 days before Ackerman can get a service tech out to even assess the problem. Finally, I've noticed, on the few times the alarm has accidentally been tripped, response times have been FAR greater than the 1 minute quoted by the sales person. In one case it was over 10 minutes before Ackerman called to verify if we'd had a real alarm or not (in that case the fire alarm had gone off and I can imagine what the result of an extra 10 minutes might be the case of a real fire). Overall, I'm wholly unimpressed. I was sold this system by a fast talking sales guy who (retrospectively) had very little understanding of the equipment he was selling (for example we also had issues with the number of zones supported by the board he specified). If I were to do it all over, I’d go with Alarm Monitoring Service of Atlanta. Ackerman may have been good in the past, but they clearly are no longer “on their game”.

We have used Ackerman for nearly 10 years and are now thinking of switching because (1) the response time to call from alarms has increased exponentially and (2) it is nearly impossible to get someone on the phone unless you have an alarm. The quality of their customer service has declined. I currently use them, but marked I would not use them again because I would not recommend them because of their service issues.

Everyone from the salesperson to the installer was great. There was no hard-sell tactics (though we had already decided in advance that we wanted Ackerman system). The installer was prompt and outstanding in surveying the house for the best locations for the equipment. He also gave us a good tutorial on the system before he finished. My only complaint about Ackerman is the long wait time in reaching a customer representative. They need to hire more staff if their business is as good as my salesman indicated. Fortunately, the response from the monitoring center was lightening quick when I accidentally tripped the system!

Brian H. was very helpful and patient. He went above and beyond what I would expect from most service techs. They are over-scheduled and as a result are constantly pushed to save time and move to the next client. However, this appointment came after two earlier attempts failed. Clearly Ackerman has problems setting appointments with clients. The explanation I got was that there are two different departments that make appointments. Unfortunately I didn't (and still don't ) know specifically which department to call for my next appointment. I kinda expected better attention because I've been with Ackerman for three years already at a previous location. Here's what happened: My initial appointment with Ackerman was cancelled without my knowledge. My next appointment was made without my knowledge and when the technician called I was unaware there was an appointment. Finally, on the third try, the technician, Brian H., provided outstanding and excellent service.
Description of Work: Ackerman's technician visited to make adjustments to our alarm system and to answer several questions about it. This adjustment followed the initial installation, when Alex and Hal did a great job installing the system. Sale rep. Keith Chapman was great about explaining everything and trying to get us the best value for our money.

They are excellent and do a great job. We are very pleased with them. Their monitoring is really good. They are locally owned and operated company. They call you immediately when your alarm goes off and they are very responsive. We have no problems with them and their price is very competitive.
Description of Work: Ackerman Security Systems put in a brand new alarm system with new key pad. They did the rewiring and replaced the old equipment with a more efficient system.

I've been using them for about 8 years. When the alarm goes off, they call me quickly. They have done repairs when my system goes bad. They are fast, efficient, and honest.

Worst contractor experience of my life, and the troubles continue!!!
Description of Work: I decided to switch security systems, since Ackerman quoted a cheaper price than my existing security system. A salesman came out and asked me questions about my phone system, and indicated that everything was inorder. Without explaining the details, I was given a form to sign stating that I would need to purchase a system twice as expensive as the one quoted if it turned out that my phone system was incompatible with their security system. When they came to install the system, sure enough, they could not install a monitored system since I have voip internet phone service. They then told me that I would have to purchase a system that was twice as expensive. When I refused, they billed me for a full 3 years of service, even though they have not provided one day of service. They do not have a customer service department, and this was far and away the worst contractor experience of my life. BE SMART. STAY AWAY!!!
