Sterling Paint & Construction Services

I am actually somewhat surprised by all the excellent recommendations for Sterling. My experience with them was very average. I would give them a B- if I were able. The quality of work that was done was good, but there were lots of additional charges and took 6 or 7 weeks to complete the project. Ben came out to give me a quote initially. His quote was not the lowest that I had received but I felt that they would do a quality job and wanted to work with his company. He agreed to discount his quote by half of the difference between the two. Carpentry: The first prep crew that was out to the house started using large amounts of wood filler to fill rotten ends of trim boards. I told Ben that wasn’t the kind of quality work that I expected them to do. After that, the carpentry crews seemed to do a better job at replacing section of rotted trim. The carpentry portion of the job continued for quite some time – several weeks. I had to repeatedly send Ben pictures of rotten boards that needed to be replaced before they were addressed. The quality of work that was done was really good. Unfortunately, I had to act as a quality control on the job for several things. Paint: The painting seemed to go much faster than the carpentry work. My only issue with the painting was that the flashing on the front of the house wasn’t painted, and I had to repeatedly remind (and send pictures) to Ben that it needed to be painted. Again, the paint quality seemed to really good with the exception of a few small things. Gutters: The gutter and gutter helmet installation went OK. One section of gutter on the front of the house was not installed initially. I had to call Ben and send him an old picture of the house showing him that there was indeed a section of gutter in that area before. He had his subcontractor come back out and install the missing section of gutter. The gutters were then painted to match the trim since the stock color wasn’t an exact match. The quality of the gutter installation was also excellent. Professionalism: There were some issues with the crew’s professionalism. One side of the house has some small trees and overgrown landscaping. In order to paint this side of the house, the crew cut down 2-3 small trees and broke many branches on the bushes. I understand that some of this has to happen, but this was rather extensive damage….to the point that I am now going to have to replace some of the landscaping in this area. I also found two flood light bulbs that were thrown into the woods behind my house. I had to pick up the broken pieces from these bulbs. Ben initially told me that he thought the entire process would take 2 weeks plus time for the gutter work. The project ended up taking 6-7 weeks for completion. Pricing: I did have Ben add some additional siding replacement to the project after it started. This was a small section of siding, but it was on the second story roof. Including this additional section, I was charged and additional $1335 beyond the initial quote of $5769 for painting and carpentry. I understand that there will be additional things that can’t be seen when given a quote, but a 23% difference from the quote to the final bill seemed rather excessive. One additional charge in particular that I did not agree with was a $225 charge for nails and nailing on a section of existing bulging siding. This should have been included in the original quote and if not, then $225 was very excessive for this item. After telling Ben that I wouldn’t be calling him back to quote replacing my deck because of the excessive additional charges, he wanted to take away the $225 nailing charge but also charge me an additional $140 for more brick molding that he said hadn’t included before. Overall I am happy with the quality of work that was done, but it came with several headaches, many additional charges and took way longer than it should have.

It was decent but I wouldn't use them again.

This is the 3rd or 4th time we have called on Sterling. Ben is very responsive and easy to work with. The quote was reasonable and the work was done in a conscientious way. We would certainly call on them again.

Ben Hawkins is amazing. I got several estimates and he wasn't the cheapest but in the middle range. I didn't know what I wanted exactlywhen Benm said, i know what you are thinking, and he did i had him continue thoughout the entire house my home looks like a new home, my family cant believe its are same old home. I have a special needs son and his crew was wonderful towards him. In fact, my son was sad when Mr Bob was finished with the work Crew was professional and safe

I was very pleased with Sterling Paint & Construction Services. I got a quote, from Mr Ben Hawkins, felt like the quote was reasonably priced, and it covered all of the items needed repair/replace/cleaned and painted. Let me just say, I'm pleased with all aspects of this job, and yes, I would hire them again.

We were thoroughly impressed with the overall workmanship and professionalism of Sterling Paint and Construction Services and all of their employees. Mr. Hawkins is extremely professional and very organized. Each job was very detailed on our initial quote and installation/improvements went very smoothly. All of the workers seemed very knowledgeable with their tasks and left everything very clean. We could not be more happy with the work that we had performed and the pricing. We will definitely use Sterling Paint and Constructions Services on any future improvements!!

One main crew ( 2 guys ) were outstanding in the quality of their work and their professionalism. Two days had extra crews to help get the job done in a week. Could not have been better. Owner came by after job was complete to be sure we were satisfied. We asked for one minor fix and he sent the crew out the next day. We had 2 estimates, this was the highest of the two, but, the job was done in a superior manner. We'd recommend Sterling Painting and Construction (Ben Hawkins) to anyone!!

It didn't they failed to call back. Went with another company.

Ben came out to give an estimate at the appointed date and time. The estimate was the lowest of all estimates provided. The team was punctual in starting the project, were highly courteous and professional, and the quality of work was excellent. They matched the stippling on the ceiling amazingly well. I was. Highly pleased and planned to use Sterling on future projects.

Ben and crew did a terrific job. No issues whatsoever. If you are looking for quality, no hassles and an honest owner, Sterling Paint & Construction is the one to hire.

She came by. She was supposed to call me back with some designs but I never heard back from her anymore. It was kind of misleading. They really were trying to sell blinds. It wasn't what I was expecting.

Two workmen arrived on time! They were courteous and professional. They were experienced and knowledgable about the requirements of the job. They returned on time for a second workday and continued the job until it was finished.

Two carpentry job and the work was immaculate. ?We LOVE these guys!!!

Excellent work all the way around. Ben & his team were a pleasure to work with on these projects. Ben was extremely prompt in returning my call & scheduling an appointment for an estimate & then the work was completed very quickly. I had an array of different projects & he gave me fair, thorough & on-point estimates. I would definitely work with this company again & highly recommend them to anyone seeking a company that does efficient & high quality work.

My house has a small concrete-block add-on room to my garage. It is essentially a one-car garage with a rough opening into my basement. It had a small window on the outside wall, and I wanted to replace the window with a door. I also wanted to remove the exterior siding on the inside of this room and finish the rough opening. Ben Hawkins got the work because of his reputation here on Angie's list and he didn't disappoint. He obviously cared that he pleased me but also that he did a good job and foresaw my needs. His man spent about 2.5 days on the site, and did everything we had agreed on, and then some. It is pretty obvious that the outside of this one little add-on room looks much better than the rest of the house adjoining it! The work was done professionally and within reasonable time. He also didn't want to receive payment until everything was done. He was even apologetic when his guys couldn't come out to clean the debris away (it wasn't in the way) for an extra day past when the job was done - it was raining! I would certainly hire him again, most prominently for his care that the work was done correctly.

It went very well. All workers worked together and had it done in three days. They were extremely friendly and were matriculates of the quality of their work. Ben Hawkins checked with me all the time to see if everything was going well as expected. He also called to see if everything was done to my satisfaction. I was very pleased with the quality of work and how fast they got done.

Great job!....The guys found the fascia board to be rotted, so they applied flashing to cover the place of entry....They returned to install and paint a piece of PVC board which will be permanent. We have contracted Ben Hawkins back in the summer of 2013 for a large job (reviewed earlier), and we have absolute faith and trust in Ben and his staff. This situation came up rather suddenly, with a mother squirrel entering inside and having three babies between two walls......We had to bring in animal removal contractors first....They successfully removed three live babies in a humane way and took them away in a cage....completely unharmed.....Ben immediately answered our distress call as the hole had to be closed quickly. We are very thankful for an outstanding business relationship with this company and HIGHLY recommend them!

Didn't go well. They just wouldn't send quote. We call and they said they would sent but never did. Called again no answer. We just moved on.

The woman who came out didn't seem very knowledgeable. I was supposed to get a call back with a quote for painting but never heard back.

I've been waiting for this company to come and do some repair work since I first spoke with the gentleman back in September. He was not prompt in returning my phone calls and emails but his wife called with an excuse and promised my work would be done the following week. That was 10/6 and I still haven't heard from them and the work has still not been done.

It was a wonderful experience, he was a very professional business man. I appreciated doing business with him and will continue to use him for repairs in the future. Anytime I needed to reach him with a question he was available and answered in a timely manner.

Sterling paint is a very busy company. My home repair was a small job that took 6 weeks to start (complete). Mr. Hawkins told me it would probably be 4-6 weeks before repair work could be completed the day he provided estimate. 2 man work crew arrived early in the AM and the work was completed within 3 hours. Work area was clean and neat. I am very satisfied with the work.

This is a very badly managed and run company. First, with regards to the hole in the house, they repaired but had painted it a wrong color, it took 5 MONTHS for them to fix and this was only after I called/ emailed several times. Second, the breakfast counter, they provided me an estimate to which I agreed to then when they came out to the house they only completed half the work as they said they would need to order materials for the rest which i was fine with as those things happen. However, again, couple months went by with no communication, finally after multiple emails the owner Ben Hawkins called and came out, said he would take care of it and then again no communication once again for several months even after multiples emails. I really can't use this breakfast area and its very unsightly since they tore everything out and all materials and unfinished sections are plainly visible. I have raised this to the BBB and am warning people not to use this Company.

Ben Hawkins came out to give me an estimate. We had a painter doing our house who abandoned us halfway through. I showed Ben what we needed finishing and he went over all the flaws from the previous painter. His crew arrived exactly when scheduled and completed all repairs, painted and redid things messed up by other painter in record time. He kept me informed every step of the way and never asked for any money until job was completed to my satisfaction I will use them for all my future painting and repairs. Kudos for a job well done
