Called Reliable based upon reviews on Kudzu (prior to becoming member on Angie's List). Initial response was good. Wayne and Fred came out to assess situation . . . older system w/some coil issues/leakage. Attempted to fix the problem and system worked well for 2 days. Called back and Fred was sent back out (very polite and responsive). He determined that the issue needed to be forwarded to their installation crew/guy (Greg?); much bigger issue than was expected. Fred called Greg from my house and told me that after explaining the problem over the phone, someone would call me the next day to put discuss the situation and put me on the books. Three days went by and no call. I finally called and got the admin asst. who told me that Greg was not familiar with my file and could they call me back in a few minutes after they located my paperwork. Again, no call. I called back the next day and Greg vaguely remembered my situation and then attempted to give me an assessment and estimate over the phone -- sight unseen. Remember, I was told that someone from installation would have to come out and see the system to determine what my options were. It just didn't appear that our business was important (just my assessment). I told him that I would call them back if I decided to go with their company. I never made that call. I understand that the summer months can get crazy, but I would have been more than satisfied with a call back or even being put on the schedule for a true estimate.
Description of Work: Service call for a non-working a/c system; leakage found.

Reliable replaced our ancient heating system with a brand new, high-efficiency Trane air conditioning and heating system. Daniel Jape assessed all the needs for our 90 year old house and produced an estimate on the spot. Reliable beat every other bid we solicited (6 in total)! Daniel and the installation crew were courteous and efficient. I cannot recommend this company enough.
Description of Work: Removal of existing 1920's era Williamson furnace and replacement with a high-efficiency Trane central heating and air conditioning system. Reliable also installed two additional duct lines to under-serviced rooms.

Over the last two years I have used them for multiple installs for my house and small business. Once checks were written they have had an extreme lack of response and unwillingness to correct errors. The last person they sent out proclaimed that "they" should not have installed it that way. I had to tell him that he is they and his company had done all previous work. I will never use tham again. Ever.

It was cool when the initial tech, Chris, came out to fix my furnace. I did not like that Chris turned off my gas without my permission and told me we could not use the furnace. (Someone else in the industry said, "You fell for that?!!") I don't know if it was a sales ploy or if my furnace was "extremely dangerous" but as the homeowner, I should make that call. When I called the day after the install and complained about the electrical code violations (there were three) and said I needed a third party to look at the install before I signed off on it, Barbara was rude and interrrupted me ("Let me stop you right there!"). She said that because Reliable "stands by our work" a third party inspection was unnecessary and that I was out of line to tell her that. I imagine that it was not I that was "out of line." Kim worked with me on scheduling, answered a lot of questions and did the financing portion of the job. She rocked and is a credit to the company. Greg was the quality assurance guy (but also with the crew that came out to the house the 2nd time to fix all the issues and still missed the drain pan and float switch - makes you wonder). He was great on follow up and making sure we were happy with the install. However, he glossed over the whole thing with "On a 1-10 it was an 8 or 9, as far as installs go; we just wanted to tidy up a few things." Tidy up? I'm not stupid - not replacing a 30amp breaker in the box next to the ac (when the ac unit can only handle 15amp before being damaged) is not "tidying up." I might use them again but I am going to babysit the job, hand pick the installers, and make sure they know that I expect a permit to be pulled before they start the job. (The county said it IS required, despite what one of their techs, Brandon, said: "Oh, no ma'am, we never pull permits on these jobs.") I took a lot of detail pictures of the install before they came out to "tidy up" and it's an absolute night and day difference from what they would have left us with had we not called to complain (and hold up payment). If you use them, even if you get and inexpensive furnace ...ask for the "high end" installer and save yourself a lot of time. No one called and asked if they could compensate me for all the headache two follow up visits and two inspector visits. That was a lot of my time. They were the best price of three estimates though...and after all is said and done (depsite the time lost and nervousness about what else might be wrong - like the line set that they swear up and down does not need to be replaced, despite being 22 years old) I think I finally got a good install...here's hoping!
Description of Work: They came out and replaced our upstairs heating and air system. A day later, I had a contractor look at the project and find 3 electrical code violations and several other shoddy items on the install. I called Reliable and asked "when is the inspector coming" as I just wanted to assume they had pulled a permit and would have an inspector. I told them about my concerns. They ordered a permit the next day but delayed the inspector until they could come out and fix things. They sent 4 men in 3 vehicles to monsoon upon the house and fix 7-8 things with the install (taping around the plenum boxes, using mastic paint, leveling out and shoring up the ac pad that they had just set on some bricks from my yard, fixing a flip switch on the side of the furnace that was hanging out of its box and had no cover, replacing the circuit breakers that were the wrong voltage and would allow the equipment to be damaged, and replacing the electric whip outside because it was terminated incorrectly and was not weatherproof). I was impressed. The inspector (Tony Cloud, Cherokee County) came out and still did not pass the install because of two minor things that we would have fixed ourselves, HOWEVER, as the inspector was there we noticed they had not replaced the metal drain pan and float switch that was clearly indicated on the invoice as a replacement. Reliable sent another crew out to the house. This crew (Jorge Ceron & Roda) replaced the pan and the float switch and additionally replaced the gas whip in the attic and adjusted a dip switch inside the furnace. The inspector came out and finally passed the job. I don't know whether anything will come up after this. We're a little nervous after this experiencce. That's about TEN THINGS that had to be repaired/replaced or corrected before the job was ok. Their follow up was very good. And I do believe they do okay work (we used them for repair work before) but I think they just sent the absolute worst possible crew to do our install. (One of the techs that came out on the 3rd visit said that he was a "high end installer" and that they had not sent a "high end installer" to do my job. Kind of scary.) It was my own intuition that got me to have a 3rd party look at the install - Otherwise I would be none the wiser and still have multiple things wrong and have paid for the installation/replacement of a drain pan and float switch that were not even replaced.

I first want to thank you not only for your business but also for giving us the opportunity to make things right. This job was somewhat atypical from the beginning as it was sold through service, and with it being a last minute holiday weekend and a last minute install on a Saturday it was not as well planned as usual. To make matters worse, Chris the service tech who sold you the system was out with the flu and was not available for consultation so when we came out on Saturday we may not have been as well prepared as usual. We accept responsibility for that . I would say 97% of the time things go perfect. But just like any other contractor we have our share of mishaps. At your initial call after the install you were understandably upset and I think what Barbara was trying to convey to you was that it wasn't necessary to be so. We do stand behind our work 100% and if something is amiss we'll not leave you hanging. We also did not expect any payment until you were satisfied with the job. People are very suspicious of home service contractors and in some cases rightfully so. A few bad apples ruin it for the rest of us who run an honest business and hold ourselves accountable for our work. The 2 items you mentioned from the failed inspections were actually pre-existing in the home and we missed on that we were supposed to correct them which we did at no charge. I personally am responsible for the drain pan and float switch. I have a set of templates for work descriptions and again since this was not a typical sale (in which a sales representative actually comes out and evaluates and gives an estimate) I did not have a complete description of work. It's mentioned it in the body of the invoice (which is in the template) but not as a line item like its normally done so the installer missed it. I must say however in regards to the gas being shut off, this is an absolute when we find a crack in the heat exchanger. We would never leave someone without heat unless there is a very compelling reason, and furthermore we are ethically bound to do so and could be held legally liable should something happen to you as a result of not disabling the furnace. It may seem extreme to some people or worse, be used as a sales ploy by some, but we did not earn our reputation by selling people things they do not need. It’s just not how we operate. Case in point, the lineset; there is no need to change it provided it is properly sized, in good condition, and is thoroughly vacuumed and nitrogen flushed. Having been in business for 32 years we're very confident in the quality of our work. But even the most seasoned contractors will have their share of problems. In instances such as this we use it as a training tool for those less experienced or whose work may not be up to the rigorous standards we require. Also, keep in mind it is very easy to go behind someone and be critical of their work and other contractors seem to relish the experience of pointing out the mistakes of another. I can assure you it’s not necessary for a third party to go behind us in every instance. We do perform random in-house QC inspections on certain jobs and had this one been selected, we would have discovered and corrected those items with no hesitation. On a personal note I appreciate the praise you gave me. This can be a difficult, time consuming and sometimes thankless job and a little praise goes a long way and I thank you for that, and also for your honest assessment of the job. To compensate for the inconvenience you experienced, I can extend your contract for one additional year. Things did not go as planned however you were balanced with your praise and criticism and that means a great deal to us. We'll learn from this experience and move forward, and be a better company for it. Thanks for taking the time to submit your report. Please don't hesitate to call me directly should you require anything further-Kim P. P.S. Your a/c will need to be properly charged before running it in the spring. The cold temps prevent us from getting a good charge. We'll contact you just prior to cooling season to test the cooling side

I have been using them for 20 years and they have been fine. They send a representative every now and then for preventative maintenance. They do not quite reach the normal standard but they are very responsive. The price is fine and I have been pleased with what they have done until now so I have never compared the prices. They send different people to my house where some are superb and some are mediocre.

It went well. They were on time, cleaned up after themselves, and they answered any questions I had along the way. I am very picky about my landscaping, so they allowed me to assist them in making room for the unit, since it was larger than the one that was outside before. I got 3 quotes, and their's was the lowest.
Description of Work: They installed new furnace and air systems. This included attic and basement units and 4 new ducts. I chose the highest efficiency units made by Trane for air conditioners. I wanted the highest for the attic and basement, but they advised me that it is not recommended for attics, which I confirmed. I chose the furnace with a communicating system, which was also a higher level of quality. I also added one humidifier and 2 ultravation Merve 11 progressive media filters. There was an $800 rebate on each unit, plus the $1500 tax credit. Once I receive these rebates, I will have saved $3100 off the price given above.

They were very efficient. They were on time. They cleaned up behind themselves. They explained everything to me as they were doing the work. I had a coupon that was supposed to be for heating and air. When they got here they claimed that I needed to do some work on the A/C before they could do the work. The coupon price was for both heating and A/C, but they only did the heating and still charged me the same. They were very professional.

See above. Overall Reliable was a waste of my time and money.
Description of Work: I called Reliable Heat & Air on Friday, June 5th because the AC was not cooling in the afternoons and the outside lines by the condensing unit were frosted over. I was told that I had to let the compressor (Heat Pump) and Freon lines thaw out overnight and a serviceman would be out first thing Saturday morning. The lady on the phone told me that my system was probably low on Freon and running my AC when it was low on Freon was like running my car when low on oil. The Serviceman (Steve P) showed up around 1:15PM and after trying to charge the system with Freon, he determined the Expansion Valve was bad and I needed to replace the Expansion Valve and probably the coil that it was attached to because the system was over 14 years old. The Serviceman told me that someone would have to call me on Monday to give me a quote on the price to replace the expansion valve or the expansion valve and coil together. My elderly mother lives in the house so I really wanted to get the repairs completed quickly. The Serviceman told me that Reliable did not stock these parts and it would take a couple of days after I approved the quote and the order was placed before the parts would be received and the repairs completed. Well, as of today, it had been over two weeks and no one from Reliable has bothered to call me back with a quote to complete the repairs. This service call cost me $85 and I feel like it was a total waste of my time and money. After waiting until noon on Tuesday without hearing anything from Reliable, I called Coolray because of their great reviews on Angieslist. I called Coolray at noon on Tuesday, June 9th, and within 45 minutes, a Serviceman was at my house. He confirmed the expansion valve was out without me telling him of Reliable’s findings. The Serviceman was very professional and I watched him contact his office computer system with his Blackberry phone and check availability of parts and cost. He gave me several options and informed me that my equipment was over 14 years old and upcoming changes to the type of Freon equipment that can be installed after the first of the year would limit the availability of equipment that can be installed in the future. I decided to have both the coil and outside Heat pump replaced with equipment that could use the new type of Freon. The new equipment was in by 8:30 that evening. Moral of the story, do not waste your time on Reliable if you want to get anything accomplished.

Dear Sir, we apologize for not getting back with you. Usually getting a quote for a routine repair is as simple as calling the office. Often times the serviceman can contact the office on the spot and get a price quote on mailing those repairs. I am not sure why this did not happen in this case but I can assure you that we do not make it a habit of not returning calls. I can understand your frustration however your report is not an accurate reflection of how we do business. We are human beings and we do make mistakes-this apparently was a clerical error. While it is no excuse, it's not really fair to judge us so harshly based on such limited contact. A simple call to the office would have sufficed and I am sure we would have been able to part friends. That being said, feel free to contact the office and we will gladly refund you your $85 service call fee. Thank you.

Dan Jape, Owner, did my original estimate with his son. He was wonderful. Dan was very thorough and took time to explain the newer technologies and concern about Freon. He was environmentally respectful and informative but gave me options. The work crew of two arrived on time and completed the job very professionally. They even moved my newer thermostat upstairs to downstairs since my upstairs system came with a new thermostat. They offered me financing options and made the process very easy and efficient. I will use them again for my downstairs AC & Furnace.
Description of Work: Reliable Heating & A/C installed a new complete heating and cooling system for my upstairs and replaced the 3 inch with the 4 inch double wall flue system through the roof. They warranty their work for 5 years on parts and labor, 10 years on compressor and coil, and 20 years on heat exchanger. They provide one year, two visit contract, for maintenance which is free the first year and much less than I currently paid to Shumate in subsequent years. Their technicians are factory trained and certified.

I called Reliable for an HVAC issue. Technician was OK but failed to throughly check a specific issue I mentioned to him on the AC unit. Tech insisted that he did throughly check the unit when I asked him and he was extremely impatient with me. The AC unit in question was in fact defective as I discovered that evening because it failed. When I called them the next morning they said the could not get to my house for one week. I complained and insisted but did not make any progress. I called a second vendor who was out the same day and resolved the issue. Because of my concerns about this poor service on the AC unit Reliable promised in writing to refund a portion of the service bill but 6 months later still no check. I would not use them again!

The day of installation, the techs were punctual, polite and efficient. They even taught me a trick on how to save on filters. The Trane unit they sold and installed has worked beautifully. I would definitely recommend.

I had some problem getting the thermostat and the heater working and after replacing the thermostat 3 times and the circuit board on the heater unit once, I finally got all the bugs out of the system. This was the result of much effort on my part and many telephone calls requesting service.
Description of Work: Purchased new heater/air conditioner. I had problems with the equipment installed and need service after the original installation.
