Empire Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc. was founded in 1985 and is an independent dealer for American Standard, Amana, Daikin, Bradford White and many more product lines. We solve heating, cooling, water heating and indoor air quality problems for our customers. Our technicians have earned the Angie's List Super Service Award 15 times. Our main office is located in Decatur, Georgia with a satellite office in Cumming, Georgia to serve the greater north Atlanta area. We service, install, and repair all makes and models of heating and air conditioning equipment including ductless systems and heat pumps. To maintain our high standards, all of our senior technicians are NATE certified. Together, our team has more than 200 years heating and air conditioning experience. Empire performs background checks, random drug tests and even personality profiles along with continuous customer service training to ensure you have a pleasant and worry-free experience. The technician called me and said he didn't know why the pilot light went out, there was no good reason for it to go out. He said it might be a bad thermocouple, but normally the furnace wouldn't run for a few weeks if the thermocouple was bad. He said he would relight the pilot light and actually recommended not replacing the thermocouple. On top of that, he said they wouldn't charge me for the revisit. Are you kidding me! I was floored! These guys are my HVAC people for life! What incredible service!
Description of Work: They originally had gone out to see why the furnace had gone out, and serviced it while they were there. After their visit, the pilot light went out and they came out to relight it. A few weeks later, it went out again and they returned.

Thank you so much for your compliments. The older units with a pilot light work great until you have this sort of problem. These issues can be a failing thermocouple or gas valve but most likely are from external issues. On windy days or when the gas pressure fluctuates the pilot can be blown out when the furnace starts up or shuts down. Our technician tested the pilot safety system and it is holding well so he has no reason to suspect the thermocouple or gas valve at this time. A new roof, crawl space door, foundation vents or even the growth of trees can contribute. If this continues we can install a simple pilot shield or convert the unit to an automatic relight pilot. Empire was very responsive to my request, and scheduled an appointment within a day of my request. The technician was on time. I told him about the two issues. I have one room (the guest bedroom) that is colder than the rest of my house and I have smelled natural gas periodically in the room above the furnace, and outside the crawl space vent that is closest to the furnace. The technician turned on the fan, walked in the guest bedroom, looked at the vent, came back to me and said there is nothing he can do (end of story). I pressed him on this issue, because Empire designed and installed the system. He then said that they could install dampers or another return vent, and would have someone call me. He also told me there was nothing he could do about the natural gas smell supposedly coming from the furnace. He did very little to investigate this - I basically had to trouble shoot the issue. However, Empire sent the owner of the company out along with two technicians a week later. They were able to resolve the issue with the cold room by taking out some of the duct work, and they confirmed this with a sensor that measures air flow. They spent over an hour investigating the natural gas smell and could not determine where is was coming from. They did fix a small gas leak at my hot water heater (but not the source of the smell), and also fixed a loud noise that occurred whenever I ran water. The assured me that there is no way the natural gas smell could be coming from my furnace. I was very impressed with the technicians and the owner on the second visit - very professional, knowledgeable, and concerned about my issues and solving them. I would give the second team all A's, and have changed my review to reflect this.

Please accept my apologies. Our technicians carry a CO Angel devise that can detect even tiny amounts of carbon monoxide in a space for your safety and every service vehicle is equipped with an electronic combustible gas detector that is also very sensitive in detecting natural gas even if the trace odor agent added to the natural gas is not present. We strive for perfection and have fallen short in this case. I would be glad to have another service technician return and recheck the system and hopefully schedule at a time that Mr. Adolph or I could also be present to investigate the ducting issues. Scott Townsend arrived at my home within an hour of my call to request service. He was friendly and skilled at diagnosing the components of the furnace. He determined that the igniter was faulty and was able to retrieve the replacement part from his truck. He replaced the igniter and had the furnace operational within 2 hours of my initial call to Empire. I couldn't be more pleased with their personnel and service.

The office staff was very pleasant and accommodating, arranging for a service call the same afternoon. I was called to advise me when Dave the technician was on his way and he arrived promptly within the originally promised time frame. He tested my entire system and was able to figure out what had gone wrong with it. As I had originally planned before this incident to replace my thermostats, he took the time to explain various options, and having two on his truck, replaced them for me, all without any high pressure or feeling I was getting gouged. I would definitely use them again if I have a future HVAC problem.
Description of Work: The fan on my heat pump/ac/heat failed and I called Empire for assistance. They also, at my request, replaced two thermostats that I wanted upgraded.

The serviceman was polite and professional. He reviewed the checklist associated with the package I bought and stayed focused on the list. There was no pitch to buy a service package or upgrade the inspection. My furnace is old and in a crawlspace under my house. I had anticipated a discussion about the age and overall health of the system but he did not seem to want to discuss it. He was here about 30 minutes. Overall it was a good experience.

It went fine, but he left the switch off on the outside. I am not sure if that was a mistake. The connection on the outside was left open. It was not working because of that. There was no service done. They gave me the quotation. They checked and informed about the issue that they saw. The work was done within a month after I purchased a big deal. He disconnected the A/C from the outside. The other guy came and he figured out why it was not working. That is when he found that the switch was not in place. The connection was not set, which was not good because the air conditioning was not working. The first guy was not professional and should not have left the switch off. They presented themselves good to me.

In researching your service history I see we came for a single unit inspection. Our technician found the downstairs inoperable due to low refrigerant levels. The upstairs system operating but also low on refrigerant. Repairs were not approved at this time. Our technician did check two systems for the price of one and we are ready anytime you are to perform leak searches and repairs. Our technician would definitely have left the downstairs off as it was inoperable. There are no notes about the upstairs. If the unit was low enough on refrigerant to cause an icing situation he may well have left it off to prevent water leakage from the unit until repairs were completed. A few weeks ago, when it got "cold" for the first time this year, I noticed my thermostat wasn't reaching the set temperature of 71 degrees. Hot air would come through the vents periodically, but never stay on long enough to actually heat the house. I called a company (not Empire) and had a technician out the same day. He was in my crawl space for a short time, then came out and basically said nothing was wrong (he removed then reinstalled the pressure switch and said "everything's OK now!"). He charged me $160 and walked out the door. Flash forward to yesterday, when it got cold for the second time this year. Exact same problem. Rather than waste my time with that other company again, I called Empire, and Keith came out. He initially diagnosed a faulty pressure switch, but upon further investigation, he found that the switch itself was fine, and that something else in the furnace was causing the pressure switch to act irregularly. He then proceeded to meticulously examine each mechanism of my furnace, to make sure it was doing the job it was supposed to do. Sure enough, some drainage hoses had accumulated an abundance of water over the years, which was causing the switch to go off/on irregularly. He removed and drained the hoses, reinstalled them, and like magic, my furnace was operating normally again. I appreciate that Keith took the time to explore every option and be certain that he had fixed my problem. I can't help but think that if the original technician from the other company had just spent a little more time down there, he might have discovered the same thing, but Keith put in that effort, and the other technician did not. Empire Heating & Air is going to be my first call going forward for my HVAC maintenace and repair, I recommend them very highly!

Overall I was billed $368 from empire and the $69 coupon bringing the total to $437 to have my unit inspected, cleaned, and charged. I could have paid my old provider $150 and had the same service, plus an additional visit in 6 months to do it again. I will not even use my second visit that is included with the service plan, because it will give them the opportunity to charge me another $300 to clean the coils and charge refrigerant.
Description of Work: Following the inspection, the tech sold me a service plan for another visit within a year. The "Tune-Up" was nothing more than an actual inspection. I have bought a service plan in the past and it including a cleaning of the unit inside and out, which included the coils. That was a $150 charge from the competitor. This service plan was the same price and did not include any cleaning and the refrigerant that was added I was also billed for. That also was included in my previous plan with a competitor.

I purchased both inspections (one on my house and one on a condo property) through an Angie's List Big Deal. Price was very reasonable. Empire called me within an hour or so of purchasing to schedule the inspections, which I scheduled for different days. The Empire receptionist was extremely polite, friendly and personable each time I spoke with her. She provided a reminder call before each inspection. Both technicians were friendly and performed their tasks quickly and professionally. One discovered that the blower compressor was below optimal readings so I went ahead and had that replaced for $121. Overall good experience with both inspections and Empire as a whole. Would definitely use again.

It went very well. He was very professional, and I could tell he was very knowledgeable in regards to HVAC. Our son's nursery was not cooling down when the air was running, so we hired Empire to do an tune-up of our AC unit to see if they could identify the problem. The person who came seemed knowledgable and could not find the problem, per se. He thought it may have been due to the lack of insulation around our air ducts, which he felt the folks who insulated our attic should have done the previous winter. He criticized their work, also saying they should have done a better job at air-sealing around the vent connections. He felt that we would need to reroute our ducts so they were more direct, which could cost >$1000, and also have another go and air sealing & insulating the ducts. He left stating he would send someone out to give me an estimate on this very large project. He looked for a damper to see if that may help with rerouting the air, but did not see one. Due to the blown-in insulation in the attic, he did not physically walk over and assess the duct. I called and complained to the insulation crew and two men came out to do an assessment. They actually pushed the insulation to the side and walked up to look at the ductwork. They found a damper immediately and the problem was solved for ZERO dollars (much better than the thousands I was close to spending to reroute our entire duct work). Needless to say, I was not pleased with Empire's check-up and felt the person could have at least found the damper himself! I contacted the company & they were very kind and issued me a refund right away. So, A+ for customer service, but a D- effort in assessing my actual AC situation (averages out to a C rating in my book).
