After finding Empire Heating and Air Conditioning on Angie's List as a Gold Service Provider with HIGHEST level reviews and comments, I placed an order to buy their HVAC service, which was more expensive then a number of other offers, but the reviews said paying a bit more would be well worth it. It was. Fully expecting that the service call would be scheduled for no sooner then Monday - to my GREAT DELIGHT - Empire worked us into their schedule the very same day I placed the order. I missed their call initially - so I had to call them back a few short minutes later. The call was answered instantly by a lovely, helpful and courteous woman who let me know that they could have someone come out today. So nice to have a phone picked up by a person, much less an incredibly professional and courteous one at that. The next call came to confirm that the service technician was on his way. Nice continuation of professionalism. The service technician - Scott arrived a short time later. He asked me to describe if their were any problems - which I shared that the main level of our home was not cooling as it had been. He asked for a quick lay of the land to find the various components then he set about his work. Having had some experience with cooling system issues in the past - I had a few hunches about the potential problems and was naturally hoping that it was not the compressor or some other big ticket item. Scott was a true pro and like a doctor just started walking through the various failure points. It didn't take long for him to identify that the condensation pump was not operating and therefore the main cooling system was not coming on. After removing the pump components, he quickly determined that it was the culprit and could probably be put back into service with just a proper cleaning which was done. Upon re-installation, the main cooling system kicked in and we were back in business. In the process, I learned that inch filters that claim to be good up to 3 months don't support that claim well. Filters need to be replaced monthly if 1 inch or switch to a much thicker variant, which they will be pricing for me. It's always great when your biggest concerns don't materialize. But, regardless of whether the problem had been minor (as it was) or more major - the entire process with Empire was an A+ today. They lived up to all their other great reviews and got another.

rom the moment I called Empire to schedule an estimate to the completion of work, they were professional through and through. We bought the house a year ago, and this spring our AC unit upstairs blew. The home insurance company we had would not cover the repairs because it was not installed up to code, and the HVAC company they sent out did not want to touch it with a ten foot pole. I thought they were full of crap but then Empire came out to review the hot mess and showed me all the problems - two different sized pipes had been welded together, the AC unit installed was too large for the space, vents were placed incorrectly ... the list went on. They did the inspection, made recommendations on how they were going to bring it up to code, and also recommended a system that fit our space. We got a (I felt) reasonable quote for the amount of work that needed to be done and they installed it during the next available slot. The team was very professional, left no trace of the install behind, and installed an American Standard unit. It is much quieter than the old one, works really well and is easy to control. I was very happy with what could have been a daunting install.

Called Wednesday to try to get someone out then to repair A/C not working at all, but Empire was unable to get anyone out that day, so we were told Thursday between 12 and 4. Around 3:30 they had still not arrived, so I called and was told it would be 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Around 5:30 the weather had gotten bad with thunderstorms, so the technician decided not to go, and we were bumped to first thing Friday morning. When I talked to Empire on Thursday afternoon, I requested that because my wife was at work and needed to not be involved in trying to work things out, to please make me the contact, and I gave my phone number. However, my wife called me from work early this morning to say that Empire had continued to call her, apparently ignoring my request. I called and asked to speak to someone about the situation because I didn't feel I would be able to give them a high rating like the previous three A ratings I had given with very positive comments. The owner, Martin Hoover, called me several hours later. After listening to me, he asked what could be done to help out. I replied that some type of discount on the bill would be greatly appreciated. He replied that he wouldn't do that because he felt Empire had done everything they should in a timely and responsive way. The technician was not there long, having found corroded batteries in the thermostat. The corrosion could have been cleaned out with soda water or vinegar and fresh batteries installed, and everything would have been fine, but he elected to replace a perfectly good thermostat with a new $178 one. And I'm still trying to figure out how thunder and rain kept him from fulfilling Empire's time commitment. The economy is still bad, and everyone is trying to survive these days, but I won't be able to partner with Empire again because they have apparently forgotten how important dedicated and satisfied long-term customers are.

It went well. They worked promptly. One very experienced tech and one newer tech.
Description of Work: Original service was diagnostic furnace inspection through Angie's list. They discovered my flame sensor needed cleaning. That did that for no extra cost if I got their maintenance plan which included Spring AC checkup which about same price anyway. The flame sensor exposed my 3rd duct valve motor going bad. I had them replace that. Against discounted labor because of maintenance plan.

Rey professional and prompt. They brought a crew of three. One individual with many years of experience; one with probably five or more years experience and one with less than year. The ones with more experience were constantly encouraging and explaining to the younger members of the team. They explained each step to us as they went. They cleaned up after themselves and took the old units and all the packing materials for the new u its with them. They showed us how to use the new wireless thermostats. And, they called back a week later to make sure everything was working well. We had them also replace the heat pumps at our daughter's condo and the experience was the same. Prompt, professional, it costs what they tell you up front it will cost. The best!

DO NOT HESITATE TO USE THIS COMPANY! I had a very, very positive experience. I had three different companies come over to give me an estimate on installing a mini-split system. One salesman told me that it wasn't possible to do the install in the renovated attic space. A second gave me a quote and was going to install it about four feet up from the ground in a corner of the room near a dormer. Then Chris from Empire came by. He told me that he would put the unit over the bed, and why that location at the end of the room was important for air flow. He also pointed out why the other salesman's proposed site was a bad idea. We discussed the install in depth, as well as the system that Chris suggested. As the install looked tricky, the head installer, Pat, came by with Chris at a later date, just to make sure it could be done. After some discussion and investigation, Pat gave the green light, and the contract was signed. The project went off without a hitch and the unit works perfectly. I highly recommend this company. Chris and Pat, and the ladies in the office? All wonderful. Keith comes by twice a year under a maintenance contract and is polite and professional. Thanks Empire.

Refrigerant added ($136). Kept complaining to my wife about having to drive from Lawrenceville. NEWSFLASH: Forsyth is listet as being in your coverage area. A few days later the unit stopped cooling all together. As my wife didn't want to deal with this person/company again (I am out of the country on business), we decided to call in a company recommended by a neighbour, who determed that the unit was leaking in all ends and was beyond repair at a reasonable cost.

Dispatching technicians in the summertime can be challenging and I apologize for our team. We clearly fell short of expectations. We do service most of Forsyth County and we have employees that live there as well. During the course of a day our technicians travel around from call to call and unfortunately peoples schedules do not always allow us to keep them spread out into designated areas. It is possible in the same day to have calls in the same neighborhood and have to drive across town from one call to another. Our technician did find your system low on refrigerant and restored it to working condition noting that dependable operation could not be assured at this time. Cutty was punctual, knowledgable, and professional. He got along great with my dog, who can intimidate some people. He took the time to inspect the thermostat wire at my request and found that it needed to be replaced and offered an on-the-spot estimate for the work. I declined the wire replacement, and he continued with the inspection. He found no other problems. All services were covered under the coupon I purchased. I would recommend this company.

Blake Eastland (installer) and Keith Lumpkin (helper) were very pleasant and courteous. They respected our house, our family and our pets. This was our first experience with Empire and if this is an accurate sample of their service, we will never look anywhere else. These two were leaps and bounds above our previous company in knowledge, experience, integrity, and quality of work. They pointed out some flaws in previous work and correctly identified problems in our system that were previously not found. Even the work site is cleaner than any other service company visit we've had. No cigarette butts, no installation debris... they even took out some of my old dirty filters I had stacked for later disposal. As for their work, they are barely out of our neighborhood and we can already feel a significant difference in how our A/C is working! I cannot think of any better possible experience from a service tech. Thank you Empire this wonderful experience. It should be noted that we are tenants, so we cannot comment on pricing as we do not know how much this service cost the home owner.

Mason, Blake and Dale arrived early and began the job. Later they found the AC was missing a part when it was shipped from the manufacturer. As the day got hotter, they kept working and were able to find the part in Norcross. They knew I would be traveling and assured me I would be cool before bedtime. They never gave up, and worked till almost 7p.m. and finished both jobs. They cleaned up the house and the yard. Thanks to these three great guys for going above and beyond to do a GREAT job.

I rarely write reviews but felt this company deserved one. Blake and his crew arrived at my home on Tuesday and worked all day in my attic and outside in the heat and returned the next day to finish the job. Blake and his crew were professional, hard working, and very polite. The job they did went above and beyond my expectations, very rarely will you find a company that will go above and beyond to make sure the customer is 100 percent satisfied not only with the product they are selling but the customer service they are providing you. I had high expectations of this company because most of the Angie'slist providers I choose with excellent ratings turn out really well. This one was below my expectations for a few reasons. The first tech they sent out was inexperienced and could not find the leak that I was charged $140.00 for. He was wanting to charge me an extra $50.00 for someone more experienced to come out and try to find it. When I argued that I should not have to do that he waived the charge, but I did not like having to argue about something like that. The second tech was very good and found the leak quickly. If I had met him first and the prices were not so high I would have given this company a better rating. Since my part was covered under warranty all of the charges were for labor and it just felt like too much to have to spend for that amount of labor. There was some other work that I wanted to do but will not because the cost is too high. One final thing that turned me off with this company is their maintenance plan did not seem to offer much value. There are no guarantees if you are under a plan with them and something goes wrong with your AC/heater.
Description of Work: The did a standard inspection = 70.00 with Angies list coupon. Search for refrigerant leak = 140.00 Replace warrantied coil = 631.00 for labor Replace refrigerant = 115 for first point, 45.00 for each additional pound. Needed 5 pounds. Total = 295.00

Thanks for posting and bringing up lots of interesting subjects. We do have an apprentice program. Most people aren't aware there is a severe shortage of skilled labor. In our case where we send men to your home that require security clearance via background checks, drug testing to work in our drug free workforce and a good driving record it is even more so. We hire the best of the best from technical schools, apprentice them with senior technicians and introduce them to the field only after demonstrating the skills and integrity necessary to accomplish the tasks required. Each apprentice has a senior technician to call on and there should never be an additional charge. I will review the process with our team at our next weekly service meeting as the process should be seamless to you the consumer. Manufactures do provide parts under warranty but it is not free anymore with many of them. Process charges are billed to us and old parts have to be returned with supporting paperwork to their warranty department to get the "free" part. Installing a coil requires brazing, nitrogen purge, evacuation, micrometer testing and verification of proper operation. There is a lot to the process to do it right. Leak testing can be a challenge depending on the application and it is critical to proper resolution of a problem. It's one thing to find a leak and quite another to make sure that there is only one. Often there are multiple leaks and we want to do every thing we can to make sure we have all the issues noted so the repair is complete. Our maintenance program is just that. It provides for the proper maintenance of your heating and cooling system, substantial discounts on any repairs needed and guaranteed priority scheduling should problems arise. Providing proper maintenance is good for our customers to make their equipment last longer, run more efficiently and have fewer breakdowns. We offer a substantial discount to those customers as we have the opportunity to perform the maintenance on their equipment in the slower times of the year helping us maintain a more consistent workload. As you might imagine the heating air air conditioning business can fluctuate greatly from season to season. Our maintenance program is not an insurance program. There are many such programs out there where you pay several hundred dollars per unit per year that cover many types of breakdowns. Our experience has been that most customers feel these programs cover everything except what breaks with all the exceptions and exclusions so we have chosen to stay our of the insurance business and in the service, maintenance and installation fields. Service is expensive and I think we can all agree on that. We pay others to repair our vehicles, fix our computers, calibrate our test equipment, fix the copier, train our team and on and on just like everyone else. We are not the cheapest service provider in the city by any means. to accomplish that we would have the lowest quality labor, no training, poor equipment and certainly could not follow best practices to deliver solid dependable services. Nor are we the most expensive as we do not have shareholders expecting dividends and a large corporate structure to support. We are a home grown American small business built from the ground up by the same people that founded the company with the support and hard work of some great tradesmen and women. Many have been with us over ten years and some over twenty of the thirty years since we began. We charge only what is required to cover a lean overhead and post a modest profit. I knew I needed a new AC compressor this year after the old one went out last October. I received 2 other estimates from well reviewed providers on Angie's List and was prepared to contact one (with a higher price of 5,300) for the work I needed. At the last minute, I decided to get one more estimate and am very glad I did. Chris, one of the salesmen, came out the next day, sat down with me and explained in detail what they could do. He answered all my questions, was very professional and his bid was the lowest of the 3 companies I contacted. Installation was 3 days later and everything went smoothly. I had a couple minor follow up adjustments that needed to be made, so I would call their main number and within a few hours, someone was there to take care of it at no charge. I have been blow away by their customer service, price and professionalism and highly recommend them to anyone in their service area!
Description of Work: Installed a new air conditioner and coil. Replaced metal tubing from hearter and installed a new part in a heater fan.

It turned out great. There were no dislikes. They have been great. I've used them a couple of times since then. They were pretty competitive.
