Description of Work: We have an annual maintenance contract with Ace n A. We have used their services for several years as they did an emergency service on an AC unit (installed by a vendor that closed due to owner retirement) and then installed a heat pump as 2nd zone system. |They are courteous, professional, and reasonably priced. |

The technician appeared competent, but I was not particularly impressed. I paid him with a company check. He asked me for my ID. This totally creeped me out. Never in my life have I been asked for ID for a company check, nor in my own home. I realize that this is probably a company policy (a foolish one IMHO) not the technician's decision, but still that creepy feeling means I will not use Ace & A again.
Description of Work: HVAC wouldn't come on night before last at all, started up again yesterday but made funny noises. Called Ace & A for a service call to find out what the problem was. He could find no explanation why the heat didn't come on. Suggested it was operator error. I've been operating the thermostat in this house successfully for 20 years, so I doubt that guess was correct. He did identify a non urgent problem with the backup gas furnace induction motor, and noted a leak in the humidifier line. I decided not to have these repairs performed immediately since they are non-urgent and the heat actually works now.

Response from Ace & A Heating & Air Conditioning of DeKalb
At Ace & A, our ultimate goal is to achieve 100% customer satisfaction. Unfortunately, we cannot address an unsatisfied customer’s concerns if they are not brought to our attention. After reading this review, our manager contacted the customer in an attempt to resolve any concerns that she had, as well as to find out what more we could have done to improve our overall rating. However, the customer aggressively declined to speak with the manager to resolve the issue. Our technician was dispatched to the customer’s home based on her request for service. The customer stated the furnace was not heating the home properly and was occasionally making a loud noise. The customer also stated that the small green light on the thermostat (which indicates whether or not the system is in the heating mode or not) was working intermittently,. Upon arrival, our technician found the thermostat in the “off” position. The thermostat controls when the furnace or heat pump comes on by telling it to start or shut down depending on the set temperature. Since these devices can sometimes be complicated to operate, they are often the culprit of heating and cooling problems. If for any reason the thermostat is not set correctly it can certainly affect the desired temperature. The technician switched the thermostat over to the heat position, and the heat pump cycled on immediately. This particular customer has a dual fuel heating system. This type of heating system uses a heat pump as the main heating component, and uses a gas furnace when the system calls for emergency heat. After starting the system, our technician performed a thorough diagnostic inspection to locate any problems.Ultimately, he found the heat pump and furnace were both working properly. However, during his inspection, the technician did notice two unrelated problems with the furnace. He found that the noise the customer was describing was coming from the inducer draft motor on the furnace due to its age. He also found a hole in the vinyl tubing leading to the humidifier. He went back to check the connections to the thermostat to ensure that there were no wiring issues and that the thermostat was operating properly. He did not find any problems with the wiring or thermostat and did not see any need to replace the thermostat unless the customer wanted to upgrade it to a newer version. After his inspection he reported his findings to the customer and recommended replacing the inducer draft motor, vinyl tubing, and also quoted a new thermostat for the customer if she decided to upgrade it in the future. The customer declined all recommendations because they were not directly related to the heating problem. Our technician stated that the customer was happy that he had solved the heating problem and was courteous to him prior to collecting payment. The customer paid with a company check which did not have the address of the home where the service was completed. According to Ace & A company policy, all employee are required to ask for identification when collecting a check or credit card for payment.. This practice is conducted for safety and security reasons. Ultimately, it is to protect our customers and our company as well. Also, it should be noted that this is a common practice among many businesses. Overall the customer rated our service with the grade of C and we feel this does not reflect the true nature of this service call. We arrived during the specified time frame and confirmed the appointment by phone with the homeowner. The customer also received the lowest price that we offer to perform a diagnostic inspection. Our standard diagnostic charge is $84.95, but the customer used a $10 off coupon from Angie’s List for a total of $74.95. Ace & A’s technician did everything possible to resolve this customer’s heating problem. He also provided her with recommendations to prevent future heating problems. We feel that this negative review was in response to our technician asking for the customer’s identification during the exchange for payment. Again, Ace & A strives to achieve 100% customer satisfaction, and we understand that we did not achieve that goal with this particular customer.. However, we welcome her to call our office to speak with our General Manager, Rick Coggins to discuss any further concerns that she may have had and also what Ace & A could have done to make her experience a better

Just see the above statement.
Description of Work: Ace and A replaced my old furnace and air conditioner. The team doing the work worked well together and appeared fully professional in what turned out to be a difficult job especially with the furnace, both getting the old one out and the new one in. Both appliances were checked out before they left, and so far (in five days) the furnace (the only one being used at this time) is working fine.

I will definitely use them again and highly recommend them to anyone who needs to replace their units or have an annual check up.
Description of Work: I had to have my upstairs air conditioning unit replaced. Two years prior my downstairs unit went out and was also replaced by ACE & A. They worked with me on the price since I had already purchased on unit from them. They arrived when they said they would, were very professional and helpful and when the job was almost complete a manager came out to inspect everything. I felt they gave me a good price on both units and I trust them. I will definitely use them again and highly recommend them to anyone who needs to replace their units or have an annual check up. They also have a great maintenance plan available which I've purchased as well.

On July 3 we came home from work and our A/C was not working. Ironically, we had an appontment already scheduled with them for July 6 to do an "annual check-up" on our A/C unit, as we are under a "preferred customer" agreement wth Ace and A and they perform yearly annual checks on both our AC and furnace. Ace and A came out early on the 4th of July and told us that our coil was frozen and we should turn it off for some time and then if we turned it off and on sporadically we would be able to limp through for 2 more days until our scheduled appointment with them. cost of the call on a holiday was $100, which we knew in advance and gladly paid. We did as the technician suggested and it worked. On July 6th a different serviceman came to do our spring check-up, told us we had a leak and added 3 lbs of R-22 freon at $74/lb. He also said we needed a leak check (but didn't perform it at that time). We were leaving on vacation the next day for a week so told him we would schedule it for when we returned and he said that would be fine....... but it wasn't fine. We returned one week later and the freon was completely gone and the AC was blowing hot air. They returned on July 16th to do the leak scan ($150) and found all freon was gone. They had to add another 4 lbs of R22 freon ($296). If the serviceman had simply fixed the leak during the July 6 service call we could have saved the $296 worth of freon that leaked out during the week we were gone. But we had had good luck with Ace and A in the past, so we stuck with them when our AC was not working in September and they came out on September 17th on a service call. They diagnosed that we had a bad control board on the furnace, so the AC was not turning on as it should -- and something going wrong with a 19 year old furnace was not surprising, so we decided to buy a new furnace from Ace and A (cost ~$2000), which they installed on September 19th. This allowed our AC to start cooling our house again, but we noticed as the weather cooled the AC fan was running constantly -- even when the thermostat showed that the AC should not have been running. We called Ace and A again to take a look at it and they discovered that they had wired the new furnace incorrectly and that was causing the fan to never shut off. I'm not sure if Ace and A has had many seasoned service technicians leave their company lately, but we just are not getting the quality that we have in the past and will be choosing a different heating/AC service company in the future.
Description of Work: Multiple visits to our home that included an annual AC check, an AC freon leak check, additon of R22 freon at $76/lb, a service call for a bad furnace control board, installation of a new furnace and subsequent follow-up call to fix a wiring mistake on the furnace install.

Called company in the mid-afternoon explaining that my Rheem upstairs AC system started blowing warm air the previous night and the output fan was blowing out cool air rather than the customary warm air on a very old but reliable system. The representative was professional, compassionate. She seemed to really understand that as a teacher, my hours of availability are limited during the day. After hearing that I get home after 6pm, she arranged a diagnistic service call the same evening after 6:00pm. At about 6:10pm, I received a call that the tech was en route. He arrived approx. 15 mins later. The tech identified himself and begin checking the system. Though he was very professional, he seemed a bit uncertain about the diagnostic process. He determined based on the fact that the system was blowing hot air inside & only cool air was exiting the exterior fan that the problem was with the outside cooling unit. After testing the electric current to the condenser, the tech made the judgement call that the condenser was working but the compressor was over heating & locking up. After hosing down the compressor to cool it & attempting to jar to unit to unlock, the tech deterined that the compressor needed to be replaced. He then sat in his truck for about 15 minutes and returned with a bill for $84.95 & an estimate to replace the cooling unit with a 13seer Ruud, a thermostat and coils for $ 3325 not including the furnace. I noted that earlier in the summer I was considering replacing my old system for a more efficient model & that I received an estimate for a 13 seer complete Lennox unit with Merrit furnace and whole house air filter for $3763 minus a $300 discount from a very reputable company with ample references. I produced a written estimate as verification. The tech stated that with the addition of the furnace a sytem from ACE & Awould cost over $4700. I realize that my system is quite old & that it iswell past it's effectiveness. I was hoping for a little more time to save & shop for a system. The tech was very prompt & professional. I did get the impression that he was somewhat of a novice. Therefore, I may have to yet yet another opinion. If as is highly likely, I will have to replace the system, I definately will purchase the other quality system from athe company that is not listed on Angie's List but has come highly recommended by both a contractor friend and a neighbor.

We have an unit dedicated to our guest suite, having guest that week, Ace and A came out within hours of our plea. They repaired the unit quickly but warned us it was on it's last legs. The next spring, we got quotes for a new unit. Ace and A gave us a very good price and since they are so close to us (2 miles away), we decided to support a local company. They were very good removing the old unit and putting in a new platform for it to stand on.We have them on an annual maintenance contract for several years. They call and remind us about the semi-annual inspection, and we can set the appointment for our convenience. Usually, we have the same tech come over and check things out. They are very polite, professional and inform us if there's any problem. We had an old floor vent that rattled all the time which was very bothersome. I asked for a replacement register which they ordered for me. I picked it up and installed it. It's so nice to have a quiet room again. All in all, this company is an excellent firm to have service with. I highly recommend them for HVAC.
Description of Work: Ace and A did emergency repairs to an old heat pump/AC unit. A year later, we got quotes for a replacement unit. They gave us the best unit for the price. Since then, they have maintained our main unit (new in 2004) and the unit they installed. We have an annual inspection contract with them.

My AC was fixed within 30 minutes. Plus Dion was just a genuinely nice guy.
Description of Work: Dion helped explain why my AC unit froze up (low freon) and advised me to keep an eye on it because if it happens again this summer, it means there is a significant leak somewhere and they would need to do a leak scan. But he saved me the expense of having to do that today, because it may just be a slow leak over time that would be regular wear and tear.

My overall experience with Ace & A is outstanding!
Description of Work: I called Ace & A to schedule a free estimate appt. as a second opinion and spoke to a very nice woman who told me that I would get a call back from a sales rep. No sooner than I hung up the phone did my phone ring with the rep from Ace & A! His name is Tim and he is one the nicest, most patient and professional individuals I've ever encountered. He answered all of my questions honestly and genuinely, and helped me to make a sound decision. Ultimately I will stick with the current service but I will always keep Ace & A in mind a be quick to recommend them to people who inquire.

At the absolute height of the extreme heat we experienced, my AC went out. I'm 7 and a half months pregnant and the indoor temperatures on the upper floor of our home were downright unbearable. I faced the conundrums of the 104+ temperatures, the unit went out on a Sunday and the following Wednesday was a holiday... I called many places for immediate/emergency assistance and I was told on 99% of those calls that I could not be accommodated until the following Friday. You can imagine how I felt. I've got myself, my husband, our little one, our pets and my advanced pregnancy in all this heat & humidity. I called Ace & A on Monday morning and they said, "We can be to you by as early as 8AM tomorrow." I was so grateful for their prompt, courteous manner, fair price (I was also able to use an Angie's List coupon!). They called twice to confirm the appt, called ahead of the technician's arrival and the fix took less than twenty minutes if that. I would DEFINITELY recommend Ace & A to any of my neighbors, and as an HOA board member, people do ask from time to time for recommendations. They were friendly, courteous, professional and very prompt and fairly priced + coupon. I will most certainly be using them for the regular maintenance on both of my HVAC units. Thanks Ace & A!

We were very pleased with the cleaning of our two air conditioner units and the replacement of one of the parts. We thought the price on the part was reasonable. We will continue to use them in the future.
Description of Work: We have used Ace & A Heating and Air for years. They installed a unit for us several years ago and the work was far superior to another company that installed our other unit. This summer they performed some maintenance on both our air conditioners. The individuals are always punctual and extremely professional. The technician took off the cover of our unit and explained the condition of the various parts to us. There was no pressure to buy new parts, but it was clear to us that one needed to be change. Usually we clean the units but we had Ace & A do it this time. It was the most thorough cleaning I've ever seen. They then came back to install one new part on our unit. They always make sure the area is clean after they are finished. We are just about to ask them to do our heating maintenance for the year.

Everything went great and everyone I spoke to from the afterhour’s person, to the original technician, to the installers and the owner's son, were very polite and professional. It was obvious to me the technicians and installers were all very knowledgeable and highly skilled people. They answered all my questions and wanted to make sure I was completely comfortable with why they were replacing my unit. I also felt they were all very responsive to my needs, especially since I had a sick dog. I believe Ace & A has been in business for over 30 years. It’s a family run organization which explains why their level of service was so high. I think they (all) are very honest people and they gave me a good price on the unit. They were also able to come out a day earlier than planned. I have used them for semiannual service checkups since 2008 and ten months ago had them replace my upstairs unit. I found the same level of professionalism, skill, and service then, that I had now. In fact, one of the installers also helped install my unit last year and remembered me. I have worked with other Heating and Air Conditioning companies in the past. Ace & A surpasses anyone else in Atlanta. They are honest people who really do care about their customers. I give them an A+ and will refer them to anyone looking for a good Heating & Air Conditioning company.
Description of Work: I was on vacation and when I returned home I noticed my downstairs air conditioning unit was blowing hot air. This was a Saturday afternoon at about 4:00pm and I wasn’t sure if I would be able to get anyone to come out to fix it. I had used Ace & A in the past so I called them. I got the afterhours person and she said they were booked until the following Wednesday. I told her I had a sick dog and couldn’t wait that long. She told me she would make a call and see if she could get someone to come out over the weekend. She told me the owner and everyone that worked at Ace & A were huge animal lovers and she was concerned that my dog was sick especially in this heat. It had been very hot in the city for the past 2 weeks and she said they were running pretty much night and day trying to catch up with all the calls and unit replacements. She called back about 10 minutes later and said they could come out, but it wouldn't be until tomorrow afternoon. Since I had a separate unit upstairs I told her I was ok with that. A technician came on Sunday and my unit was completely out of Freon. I had a leak and since my unit was over 11 years old I knew I was going to have to replace it soon. The technician told me what was wrong with it and recommended I replace it. I agreed. He said it would be Wednesday, before they could do it. He filled it with Freon hoping it would get me through until Wednesday and as it turned out, it did.I received a call from them Monday morning saying they could replace it on Tuesday instead of Wednesday. I was thrilled. They came in the afternoon as promised and did a great job. The owner's son came out toward the end of the job to look everything over to make sure I was completely satisfied before the technicians left. He said they do that for every unit they install. Everything was working perfectly.

The technician changed the thermostat batteries and spent some time determining the cause of the problem. He concluded that I needed to have the wire between the thermostat and heat unit rewired and gave me an estimate for about $493 which I thought was on the high end. Three days later, walking around the side of my house, I found out that my crawl space door was left open! I called to advise them of this. Not good - I have wildlife in my neighborhood. I found another company to take a look at the problem and they found the cover to the heat unit left off by the Ace and A technician! They were able to clean out the vacuum hose and burners which alleviated the problem for less than $100. The technician from Ace and A should NOT have left my crawl space door and heating unit uncovered! He was very professional and punctual but I cannot in good conscience use them again. Ace & A explained their charges fully in their response and they are correct in their diagnoses. My problem with them is the fact that the crawl space door was left open. I did call the office and they were professional and courteous. I called them to bring this to their attention and gave my name and date of service and the person I spoke to said that they would make sure and tell the service manager about it. I never heard back from them for an apology written or on the telephone. It is for this reason that I didn't feel comfortable using them.
Description of Work: Requested a service and/or estimate for my heat not always coming on. The office was very good about scheduling, etc.

Response from Ace & A Heating & Air Conditioning of DeKalb
Ace & A has recently become a member on Angie’s List and now has the ability to view and respond to any reports. For this reason, we apologize for the delayed response, and will make every effort to promptly respond to any reports made in the future. At Ace & A, we strive to make every customer happy, but cannot fix problems that are not brought to our attention. In this case, the customer never spoke with our general manager to discuss his concerns, nor were we given the opportunity to fix the problem to his satisfaction. The costs stated by the customer in this review are slightly skewed, and the correct costs were clearly stated on the invoice that the customer signed. The customer called us to service his furnace, because it was not functioning properly. He was notified before we sent our technician that the diagnostic price would be $79.95, which is comparable to most HVAC companies. The technician arrived and diagnosed the problem to be an insufficient sized wire between the thermostat and the furnace, which he would replace with a higher gauge wire to ensure proper communication between the two devices. The proposed cost of replacing the wire was $164, which included the labor and materials needed to complete the job. The technician also quoted the customer to replace the existing thermostat at a cost of $231, which also included the labor and material. Neither of the proposed changes were implemented, therefore, the total cost of the service was $79.95. Our quoted prices are comparable to other companies in our area, and the accusations in this dispute are over-exaggerated. We regret that the crawl space door was left open, but had the issue been brought to our manager’s attention, he would have made every effort to satisfy the customers concerns. Ace & A is family owned and operated, and we work hard to ensure that our customers are happy with our service.
