I called Kain Landscaping to see if I could get an estimate on a backyard patio. Mr. Kain told me he would call me the following day because he was tied up that day, so that we could schedule an appointment. I did not hear from him. I called again two days later and left a message for him to call me. I did not hear from him until 4 days later when he called to tell me that we were playing phone tag ( which we weren't because it took him 4 days to get back to me and I had no messages from him or his company on either of my phones). When he called, he asked me where I lived and we scheduled a day and time for him to come out to see what I wanted done. I told him it would be better if he came early in the morning to beat the traffic and he agreed that 7:30 a.m.on Thursday would be a good time for him to come. The day before he came, he called me on my cell and left a message that he had a client who he had to do a walk out with that same morning of my appointment and would not be able to come to me. I would like to know why he did not know about this so called client when he scheduled the appointment with me? He also told me that he was going out of town and would not be back until the next week. Which I clearly believe he just received another job, probably bigger than mine and decided to do that job instead. I proceeded to tell him that he made the appointment with me first, obviously, and that this other so called client should be on hold, not me. He did apologize, but it was all a bunch of hot air, I know I was right for being annoyed with him not being professional. I told him that I found someone else to do my job and would not need his services. It is a shame because I really did believe that his company would have done a good job judging from the other customers, but I do not like the way he handled the situation and I want him to know that I am pretty perceptive about why I believe he was not able to come give me an estimate on the day HE actually scheduled for me.

I could not be happier with the results. My small backyard is now beautiful and I don't regret one penney spent on the project. Both Neil and his foreman, Robert, are great designers and I have never encountered anyone as knowledgeable about plants as Neil. I am an amateur gardener and Neil introduced me to several plants that I was completely unfamiliar with. He also searched high and low to find the perfect size tea olive tree that I had always wanted. Dwarf mondo grass is planted in between the bluestone pieces, resulting in a lovely woodland feel that should be able to hold up to my two little terriers running over it. Kain also perfectly matched the slate on my patio so that it is extremely difficult to identify the extension, even though the existing patio is over six years old. The results of the project is a complete delight. The crew was completely professional, showed up when promised, and worked very, very hard almost without a break. They paid great attention to detail, including water drainage issues. Kain also guarantees its plants for a year. As I said, I am a highly satisfied customer and would not hesitate to use them again or to recommend them highly to a friend.

Kain Landscape took our backyard to a new level. The landscaping work they did around the pool was amazing and well designed. They took a muddy, straw covered yard and created an oasis, and they were able to do it very quickly and efficiently. Neil took the time to explain the amount of care & water the different types of trees, plants and sod needed in order to thrive. We would recommend Kain Landscaping to anyone looking to do anywhere from simple projects to total transformational projects. They really know their stuff and they are absolute professionals!!

The backyard of our property has a dramatic dropoff toward a low lying natural, wooded area and finally a creek. In the last couple of years it has become apparent that even with landscaping to maintain the soil, we were fighting a losing battle and gravity and runoff were going to win. I just about had to rappel down to the flat spot where the gas grill sat and things weren't going to improve by themselves. Neil Kain came over to assess the situation and immediately prescribed three retaining walls to terrace our yard. He worked around the existing very large crape myrtles and at the same time planned to remove for construction then replace some junipers, hydrangeas and nandinas. To bring things back up to where they used to be and also to create for us a reasonable backyard, it was estimated that we would need 75 to 85 cubic yards of soil backfill. The retaining walls were planned to be close to 200' total with an average height of a little over 3'. This was going to be a very large project. My great desire was to end up with a good setup for feeding the birds. I'd always wanted a hardscaped place for the bird feeders so (ideally) the sunflower shells would be swooshed away by the rain. I also knew it would be nice to have a level place for the grill and a path to it. The plan for the patio for birdfeeding and the smaller, separate patio for the grill evolved as the project moved along. Neil is a birder, too, and he immediately "got it" when I described what I was after. They also replaced the existing concrete step and landing out of the back porch which had never been to code. The new landing and step have a veneer of the same flagstone as the patios and there are matching flagstone treads/stepping stones from the landing to each of the new patios. To manage drainage and runoff for the "new" yard, they replaced some existing corrugated drain pipe (from the gutters) with (smooth) PVC pipe and installed two new catch basins. Finally, the "new" yard was graded and rolled, they installed sod and planted lots of perennials between the house and the grass. Who knew we had a Better Homes and Gardens backyard waiting to be revealed out there? Neil and his guys did just that. FULL DISCLOSURE: Kain Landscaping has done the maintenance on our yard for years and years. Knowing their integrity and the quality of their work, we did not seek competitive bids which is really mandatory if budget is high on your list of qualifiers. Neil's guys just came and WORKED for about 12 straight days on our project. Neil was in and out regularly and was 100% accessible via the phone whenever I had a question or as we were working out the details as the project came along. Finally, a not-insignificant complication regarding this project is that we have a CRAZY neighbor. We're not talking a little eccentric, we're talking Ernest T. Bass-level of crazy. (Different from Ernest T., but Ernest T.-level.) Neil's guys have known of this and dealt with these neighbors for years. You will think I am overreacting but it is honestly a testament to their professionalism that they haven't told us that it just isn't worth the trouble to keep working here and putting up with the aggravation from over the fence.

The entire job from start to finish went beautifully. And the end result was even better than we were expecting. Neil and Robert, his lead supervisor, kept us apprised every step of the way and sought our feedback each day. They have a wealth of experience between them and are extremely passionate about their profession and workmanship. Unhappy about some of the timbers and stepping treads provided by their vendor, they refused to use the shoddy materials and returned them for replacements. Neil even offered to stop by while we were away to water some of the newly installed sod that our current irrigation system wouldn't reach. Service like that is hard to find, especially after you've paid the bill.

All contact with Neil and his staff from initial contact to work completion was wonderful. They adapted the project as we progressed by communicating ideas with me and also accepting my changes w/ no problem. He was extremely easy to work with and very professional...as were his foremen. All workers he had on site were respectful...even to my little dog!!

Neil was very responsive and extremely easy to work with. He had some upcoming flexibility in their schedule and was able to start our work about a week after we finalized the proposal details. He and his crew started work on Wednesday and were done before 10am on Friday. The first day the crew dug out and removed a LOT of soil to re-grade the patio. What soil they didn't need was relocated to the upper yard to level out a number of uneven areas that remained from the initial tree removal. This was a great help for my future plans of finishing the upper yard. Before the crew started I began the process of routing a downspout drain through the new patio area along a long trench to connect to an existing drain out to the street. Neil offered to have his crew complete this work and connect it further down the fall line for minimal extra cost. They also installed a new foundation vent well that I had purchased at the proper height to match where the new patio grade would be. During day two the crew completed the grading and began the installation of the patio. They used level lines to make have the proper fall in all directions and then started installing rock. They installed a several inches of crusher run and base rock to form the basic patio and tamped it down. Towards the end of the day they began installing the final (top) layer of crushed slate. On the last day the crew arrived with the last of the slate chips and finished installing them. One of the nice touches was the rock edging they installed on one side of the patio and one small wall around a planting area. It really finished off the job nicely. All along the way the crew made sure to clean up each day and when they delivered rock in the driveway they made sure to put down tarps to protect plants and make clean up easier. It has been a few weeks since they finished and we've been really pleased with the new patio. So far we haven't had a lot of rain but the drainage issues from the patio seem to be resolved. I am extremely happy with the work Neil and his company did and it was a pleasure working with them.

My wife and I were very pleased with Kain landscaping. The owner, Neil Kain, provided the original estimate and remained closely involved throughout the project. He was very personable and a pleasure to work with. He was very good at keeping us informed and responding to our questions in a timely manner. The project began as promised, within 1-2 weeks of the estimate. The crew was large enough to complete the work quickly. They demonstrated very high-quality craftsmanship and were focused on completion of the project. They arrived on time, worked steadily, were courteous, and cleaned up meticulously each day. The quality of the work was outstanding. The new walls look great and the stonework and the mortar matched up with the existing stonework exceptionally well. We felt that the price was reasonable and there were no surprises during the project. Neil Kain and his crew not only made suggestions for improvements to the project, they were very considerate in listening to our ideas. They clearly demonstrated that they were committed to satisfying us. I would definitely use Kain landscaping again in the future and would highly recommend them.

Front start to finish the process went smoothly and was completed very quickly. Neil was very professional and answered all our questions. He is a little more expensive than some of the other quotes we got, but his company is worth it. He is very knowledgeable.

We have a very tight budget but Neil the owner was willing to work with us by doing the work in several phases. First we met with him and after that with his landscape design person. She was excellent and listened to everything we were looking for. When we got the final plan we were so excited to get started as the vison was now on paper.

I tried them because I saw them working everywhere in the neighbohood. Although the job was not very big and my budget was meager, the owner was extremely helpful and treated me as if I was spending a fortune. He accomodated my request to look at the area on a Sunday afternoon because of my busy schedule, he offered advice on where to plant the shrubs for best success for my privacy needs, and he explained what to expect from maintenance in the future. The plantings are lovely and I hope to purchase and install more soon. Now if I only had the funds for new grass sod.........

I called Kain Landscaping for a quote on drainage and landscaping work on April 26, 2010; leaving a voicemail. My call was returned by a very apologetic Neil Kain (owner) several days later. We scheduled an estimate appointment for 10am on May 7, 2010. The contractor no-showed for this appointment and did not even bother to call to reschedule or apologize. I would not recommend a contractor who fails during the sales quote.

Contacted Kain Landscaping based on reviews and pictures on Angie's List. The owner was very responsive in returning my call and arrived on time on the day of our appointment. He listened to what I wanted, and was extremely patience with my total lack of knowledge to most things pertaining to plants and flowers. Although I ended up going with another landscaping company (based on my budget at the time), I would highly recommend Kain Landscaping. I already have them first on my list for the next round projects planned for my backyard.

Kains price was very reasonable, he explained everything to me in great detail up front. Once the work started they did everything they said, plus. I asked them about some bushes that were in planters from the previous owner, all I was wanting to know was where were good spots to plant them. Not only did they show me where they should go and why, they planted them for me and charged me drastically lower than I was expecting for that. Once the job was done, they cleaned it up better than it was when they got here. I now have the most beautiful back yard for my daughter to play on and I cant wait for my friends to come and see it. I now have the only landscaper I will ever need.
