No emails from this person, which we always say is the preferred contact method. One of several Big Deal people who are the reason we don't ever want to attract impulse shoppers again. They are not a stable group.

We had very candid conversation with this customer and pleasantly reached mutual agreement that it would make sense not to try to do the project at the time of the deal . Thanks and I hope some of my ideas will prove useful.

Description of Work: Poorly. Service provider initially replied to emails and did stop by once to look over the property. He asked us to send him pics of plants and arrangements we liked from a specific web site which we did. He replied to that email acknowledging receipt of the email and hoped to have our plan done by the next weekend on May 5th, 2013. He did not respond to any further emails. He also did not respond to a prompt from the BigDeal Help Desk on June 13th which was 12 days ago. Any trust or confidence in his ability to follow through and complete the job competently has been lost.

This project was over fifty miles from us. Sometimes when you see the choices people seem to have made, you think it might be better not to go forward. In this case, a one hundred mile round-trip each time we came to work this property made taking the net $1000 cost of the coupon look foolish. I candidly admit that we made a conscious decision towards the end of our working through the "Big Deal" list that we would simply forgo some projects- with the total cost of the project being only one factor. The combination of great distance with an instinctive response to sub-rosa elements were probably the greatest deterrents

Description of Work: Mr. Fosgate came out to our home to discuss ideas for our yard. He arrived promptly and made some good suggestions for our yard. He recommended that we select pavers and provided a website to view. He also recommended looking online to see what other ideas we might want to incorporate into our yard. I sent him an email with the pavers we selected and requested a quote. I never received a response. I contacted Angie's List and one of the specialists contacted him with a request to contact me. I never received a response. I am requesting a refund of the Big Deal we purchased.

This is one project I wish hadn't gotten left out of our busy time. We were the most underwater during the time I was contacted by the help desk and just had no idea when we could do it. I think it would have been a good project for them and us. Maybe we can make something happen, if they want, down the road.

Description of Work: We signed up for the deal and contacted Ed. After an initial reply we heard nothing to further communication, and no reply to phone calls; this went on for over a month. We eventually met with him to discuss plans, and which point he said he would have something to us by the end of the week. We did not hear anything for a further month, and received no response to communication attempts. Eventually he contacted us to say eh would bring us plans at the end of the week, but we did not see him. I insisted that he bring the plans on the Saturday, at which point he showed up at our house with nothing saying he needed to have one final look. We have been chasing him for a couple more weeks, and received an estimate for over $20,000, after the deduction of the Big Deal credit. It is complete lack of perception as to what was required, and how far off he is on the requirements that has made us cancel the deal and make other arrangements.

Response from Laurence E Fosgate
This is a total misrepresentation of our encounter. Aside from the fact that we had over forty responses to our "Deal" I met with this couple as quickly as practical to discuss their needs. Their home is in a nice neighborhood on a golf course but totally lacks curb appeal. Their front instance consisted of cream colored cool decking set at an angle off a badly faded driveway- there was no other way to approach the front door except up the driveway. I proposed covering that area with pavers, expanding it to create a more inviting look and then redo of most of the plantings in the front which were totally out of proportion to the scale of the house. As to the back, the area was by their own description, a complete mess. The design proposed included creating a raised area with a patio on top that would be four feet higher than its surroundings. This would have allowed them an unobstructed view of the golf course which currently has a fence in the way. This area would be retained by Florida fieldstone rock work. There was also to be a substantial patio outside the pool area so they could have a place to entertain outside their limited screen enclosure. Both areas would have been connected by a paver walk with a bridge over a dry stream bed. These kinds of elements are frequently used in our designs for a variety of reasons since among the many great assets of the Florida landscape, topographical interest is mostly lacking. After outlining what the back would consist of, the clients were very excited to see it put on paper. At no point did they raise any concerns that the design was too grand. They suggested that even though they were having problems finding the guidelines for the HOA, we could get started on the back without their approval. I got them the plans for the back- which they never questioned regarding price- even after all the numbers were itemized. In spite of the fact they first indicated they would like to start the back while waiting for approval of the front, they next said they really wanted the front more than the back. It was a bit of a struggle to find an economical solution- it would have been impossible to match new pavers to the faded old ones and the HOA specifically outlawed the best solution - staining the old and new to match. It is astonishing to me the short-sightedness of these HOA's to preclude a design solution that is in favor with some of the most informed practitioners of the design and architecture community. Especially ironic in a community that allows a number of unattractive elements not allowed in one's with better guidelines. Ultimately we were able to get the front plans. I might add that throughout the process I shared my ideas with the clients who said they loved my vision were excited to put it into action- even before seeing the specs.Only after I had completed the front did the customer balk at price- even though the front was far less costly than the back. If they weren't to prepared to pay for the things I outlined, why did they allow me to continue? Considering the number of problems their property had that needed attention, $20,000 would have been on the low end of normal.. Two stunning outdoor travertine rooms, lush landscaping, natural fieldstone retaining walls and a redone front entrance- the amount is definitely on the low end for doing that much. At the end of the day, I am out many hours of work, they have great plans and a full refund. As clients, they get an "F"

Description of Work: This package was purchased in mid-February. It is more than 3-months later and I need the work done. Provider could not find time to execute a plan or complete the work in a timely manner. Many calls and emails have gone unanswered. The provided has not presented a plan, as discussed during a site visit over 5 weeks ago. I sat home for an entire Sunday, when a second design session had been planned. Provider did not show up and never called to say he couldn't make the appointment. Very poor communication throughout the experience. The reviews by many on your site echo my experience. I give a grade of "D" as there was nothing wrong with AngiesList execution -- that part was excellent. I need to go in another direction ASAP and will use AngiesList reviews as a guide to a different landscape company.

I had communication with this client. He said if I were too busy to do his project now that was fine, he would just get a refund and skip the review-no problem. That was our last communication. So much for his word about the review. This was while I was still worrying about "F"'s from people we couldn't get to right away on the Deals. Ultimately, I decided to just take my "F"'s and concentrate on the projects that got us straight A's for the first year and a half. If my deal had been based on inflated phony inflated prices like many of them are, I wouldn't have experienced the pain that offering a real deal costs. So much for being honest. At the end of the day I would rather suffer being honest than be deceptive at any pay.

Description of Work: I called him before I purchased the deal and he said that the bad reviews were unfair. I purchased the deal and he requested that I request an appointment by email. Took me some time to get an appointment with him but he came by the house and we had a good meeting. He had great ideas and asked me to go to Houzz.com and send him my idea book. I sent it to him around 5/2/13. Didn't hear from him. Called and sent him a text message with no response. Emailed again to see if he could start the project by 5/24. No response. I was excited about his ideas but he is either extremely unprofessional or he needs to hire an administrative assistant.

This was during the busiest time. I think it might have been ok and there were some big issues that I could have helped turn this house around but it was going to take a lot more than the deal amount to have any real impact and I got the feeling that something like that wasn't going to happen any time soon. During this time we focused on projects where doing the deal alone, if it were relatively close by, would really make a difference. Beyond that, we took on bigger projects where the customers were ready to implement something that was going to make a noticeable difference. The deal period has a six months duration and could have been extended by mutual agreement . Those who couldn't wait missed a chance to save about a thousand dollars.

Description of Work: The engagement and timeline has been beyond acceptable. I believe we had been more than patient with schedule challenges, however we have now missed the entire spring season and will soon be in summer - with not a single aspect of the job initiated. Not even the drawings. I purchased the Angie's List Big Deal on February 21. We reached out to you on March 8th. We finally had our first meeting on March 23. That was two months ago and we have ZERO to show for it. We are very frustrated and saddened as we endeavor to support local businesses and it felt that the vendor had some affinity for the neighborhood. It is unfortunate that we are unable to proceed with the project - even with the prospect of going significantly over the Big Deal cost for additional elements (driveway, etc.). I cannot help but feel that our easy going approach allowed us to be taken advantage of, or at least placed significantly down on the priority list.

Response from Laurence E Fosgate
I was happy to meet with this couple as my father was the original architect for their neighborhood in Colonialtown, one of the first subdivisions built in Orlando after World War II. They originally wanted to talk about landscaping but there were major hardscape issues that trumped any landscape needs, Their driveway consisted of two concrete strips that had been added on to and filled in with a mish-mash of different bricks over the years. Even though I have been doing this a long time, sometimes it takes a while for ideas to perk. Since I try to be as practical and thrifty as possible,, I first thought their new driveway should be built salvaging the bricks they had the most of. Eventually I realized since real brick costs more than concrete pavers, they could actually save money by just doing the whole front in new pavers and use the salvage bricks to match some already in use in the back. Perhaps if I hadn't been thinking about other projects I might have figured this out sooner but sometimes, you just have to think these things out. Sorry we couldn't make this happen. I do hope that I was able to get then to focus on what is important and if that is so, they have gotten something very valuable and a full refund. I on the other hand have gotten "0" dollars for many hours work and a nasty "F" review to boot. Considering they got free professional advice and what I got, I think they certainly shouldn't be bitter if I'm not. And if I have tried to learn anything in life it's to move forward and not stand in the barren field of regret.

Description of Work: Purchased the Big Deal in February, and at the end of March, Mr. Fosgate came to check out our property and mentioned some wonderful ideas. After submitting some pictures of design ideas, so he could an idea of our taste and ideas, we didn't hear from for another month; and that was only after our initiating the contact. When Mr. Fosgate did come out, he was not prepared, and drew his sketch at that time. Now - what he did come up was a beautiful concept and what would be a gorgeous makeover. That makeover, however, came at a relatively steep price. I emailed him a couple days later, asking how the $799 deal correlates in with the project, and the response was that we would receive a $1,500 credit towards the project since we purchased the big deal. Thinking I misunderstood the original deal, I went back and re-read the coupon, and that is not what the deal was. Based on what I've seen on his website, he appears to do fantastic work. And, from what I've read from other purchasers of this deal, I am lucky I got him to come to our house twice in 3 months. However, his changing of the terms of the coupon did not sit well with us, so have requested a refund of the deal price.

Description of Work: We contacted the provider for scheduling an estimate. He told me that I needed to email him to schedule it. Then he proceeded to "butt dial" my house three times that afternoon. Again, getting a "B" on price without comparing us to any other contractors is supremely arbitrary. Everyone who actually does research always gives us an "A" in that category. Interesting that both sets of people who responded with less than a perfect rating on price don't have the money to do anything right now. That can make everything seem expensive- if just on an emotional level.

Laurence came up with a design, but we ended up not doing it right now. The design was really good, but the things we were specifically looking at doing right away did not seem to be addressed. I think maybe we just miscommunicated. He got the design out quick and used plants that we talked about. I asked for certain things, like plants that weren't high maintenance, which he incorporated. He was always responsive, whether by phone or email, and was on time for our appointments.

I used Ed (Lawrence) service before and was very impressed with his landscape knowledge. So this time around when we wanted to build a patio, we called Ed again. He came on the scheduled date for a quote, and gave us the quote immediately, while other providers would take a couple of days to send us the quote. The quote was very reasonable priced. Especially for the quality of travertine he recommended for this project. He brought few sample with him on the visit, his travertine was the best quality compare to other providers. Some other providers just brought brochures instead of actual stones. The actual travertine came few weeks later, they are looks gorgeous. Ed's had two to three guys working on the project for four and a half day. His men are very hard working, and their skills are first class. We had few questions with the details of the work during the project and Ed answered all of them satisfactory. Ed is not your regular brick paver provider. He is an outdoor artist. He has great ideas on how to make the outdoor looks good and practical. He is very passionate about the outdoor, plants, his work and life in general. I highly recommend Lawrence Ed Fosgate to anyone who is looking for a provider to work on their outdoor projects. We plan to call Ed again for our future needs.

I'm writing today to HIGHLY recommend Laurence E. Fosgate to anyone wishing to retain a first class landscape designer and a top landscaping company. Mr. Fosgate completely redesigned, deconstructed and relandscaped more than 10,000 sq. ft. of our property. Mr. Fosgate is also an artist, whose paintings hang in some very fine Central Florida homes, which certainly shows in his landscape designs. His design has completely changed the elevation of our home. People drop by daily to view his work and ALL praise his talent. Mr. Fosgate has a great team of workers. They work without stop throughout the day and each knows his job. The quality of plants, trees and shrubs provided by Mr. Fosgate are of the best quality. His prices, to include installation, are far less than retail. He has provided more than my moneys worth. I am so impressed by his work and the work of his team that I would be happy to personally discuss his work with anyone who might be interested. I can be reached between 9:00am to 5:00pm Monday through Friday at 321-303-1399. Mr Fosgate can be reached at: 939 Mead Av., Winter Park, Florida 32789. His telephone number is: 407-754-5954. I went on Craigslist looking for someone to put down some pavers and work on the landscaping around the house. What I found was a true artist who created an osias for me and now a good friend. My neighbors now are envy of my front yard, and one of the neighbors has also hired him. Ed is a true genusis in the landscaping buisness, at one point I stopped telling him what to do and he get did his own thing which was much better than what I had in mind!! Thanks to Ed and his team I LOVE pulling into my drivieway.

My project involved completely redoing my front beds. They were overgrown with weeds and wild bushes. I spoke with two companies who gave me traditional quotes that involved ripping and replacing bushes and adding some nice plants and other landscaping. Then I spoke with Ed. He was COMPLETELY different. He wasn't going to simply clean up and replace my plants with nice looking landscaping. He was out to create a work of beauty. His tone, priorities and point of view were completely different. Black and White versus Color. His vision and passion inspire me every time we talk. And now every time we drive up to our home. It turned out great. As an example, Ed went beyond the basic beds and suggested creating two other beds that added perfectly to the look of our home. And all this was still within the basic budget so he wasn't looking to inflate the price. By contrast, one of the others almost immediately began pushing a maintenance contract during the initial estimate. In summary, we hired a designer that I will be using again to improve other parts of our property. We heartily recommend him.

Just like a few of the members, I also found Ed Fosgate's company online while searching Craigslist. The wife and I wanted a backyard patio. What we had before was a blank slate. All we had was a very small step down concrete pad outside of our sliding glass door. Our vision was to create something the wife and I could enjoy with our two very young children for years to come. Basically to give us a reason to enjoy the backyard. We had not spent a lot of time in the backyard since we didn't really have anything before. Prior to making contact with Ed, I researched the firm, checked out his websites, and also read reviews from other internet sites. Ed had excellent reviews! I first contacted Ed via email mostly to get a quote. Ed responded quickly. He came out a few days later to meet with me and the wife. He immediately shared his vision and gave us some landscaping ideas. You could instantly tell Ed was a designer. Since budget is an issue for me and the family, he presented phasing ideas to help us. The quote he presented was very reasonable. He did ask for 50% down just as the others mentioned. To be honest, I was also hesitant as people in the industry always say don't give out any money unti the project is complete. However, based on what I read on Ed and his company, I just went with it. A few days later, his crew came out and started the prep work mostly clearing out the sod. The second day, the men came back out to finish the project by meticulously setting the paver down. Just as advertised, the pavers came out beautiful! It certainly adds something special to the backyard - what Ed instanly created was an outdoor room. The wife and I plan to hire him again to do some landscaping around the patio and hopefully in the future construct a pergola (again on a workable budget). We're looking forward to Ed's ideas of transforming our backyard to something our family will enjoy for years to come! Thanks Ed!

I found Ed on Craigslist. He arrived promptly in a rented boxtruck which gave a first appearance as somewhat sketchy. As I discussed the project with him it was evident that he knew design and enhanced my ideas. Asking for a 50% deposit also seemed sketchy, but he provided excellent references upon request as well as checked out well on Angieslist. He kept great communication and his team worked efficiently while taking care to keep my dogs safe if I were not home at the time. The finished patio was even better than I anticipated. The layout chosen by Ed will optimize what we have planned in the future. He also addressed my privacy screen issues - choosing just the right plantings and delivered hearty specimens that are perfect for the space. I look forward to working with him on future projects.

I was a bit skeptical of Ed since I found him on Craigslist and he asked for 50% down but my research on him checked out so I went ahead. He showed up and completed the project just as he stated he would. He took one day longer to finish the job then expected, but that's reasonable considering the number of tasks he performed for me. I'm very pleased the results, I let Ed have the pick of what plants to install since I'm not really knowledgable about plants and don't really have good vision for landscaping design. His selections were subtle yet nice and look like they will be easy to maintain. The paver walkway came out great. Our landscaping now ties together well and no longer looks like it was done by 7 different owners with a different visions. I have a number of other projects that I plan to get quotes from Ed to do, there appears to be no outdoor project he can't do!
Description of Work: Ed did a variety of tasks for my new home, including: - Demoing a poorly installed poured concrete pathway done by the previous owners, replaced with sod. - Removing a poorly installed concrete paver pathway done by the previous owners and installing a nice paver stone walkway in it's place. - Removed rotting mulch from beds and replaced with 6 tons of Seminole Chip stones - Installed just under a pallet of St. Augustine sod. - Installed a variety of plants to polish up the existing landscaping. He re-used and re-arranged plants where it could and added color and a professional touch to the whole look of the house's landscaping.

Ed and his team totally transformed my front yard into a work of art. Increasing my property value like no other project I have done before. Ed's knowledge of plants and trees is superior, pair that with his artistry and I have the most amazing yard!!. I now have what I like to call a modern day front porch constructed from cobblestone paver's, a stone and river rock pathway from the sidewalk curving around to the back gate, along the path is a dry creek a fountain and a small pond with water plants all of this is surrounded by plants, flowers, trees and bushes all frost and drought resistant. Ed and his team gave this city girl with a black thumb a yard/garden Mother Nature will take care of with little help from me!!!. Ed say's yards and garden's should be enjoyed not cause stress. I have the most amazing yard!! Ed inspired the neighborhood and was hired to redo or fix 4 other yards in the subdivision, each one different from the other. I had one Palm that didn't like my yard, I called Ed and he replaced it with a bigger palm. Their standards are high, and he backs it up! Ed is not your typical landscaper, he creates yards inspired by you and your surroundings. I definitely recommend them to anyone no matter how big or small who wants a landscape company with vision for the design and the know-how to contstruct it. Thanks you guys! Beverly Solomonic
