water heater repair
+ -1 moreI called Marlin James and asked for a free estimate for a new water heater. Troy came by in the morning, inspected my old water heater, confirmed that it needed to be replaced, and gave me the estimate and pertinent information. He asked me how soon I'd like the new one installed and I said today if possible because I don't like cold showers. He made a call and asked if between 2 and 4 p.m. would work for me and I said it would. Bob arrived at 3 p.m. and installed the new 40 gallon, Rheem, natural gas water heater. When he finished he taught my husband and I how to light the pilot light and how to maintain the unit. There was no muss, fuss, or issues. These guys were very friendly and efficient. I'll definitely call them again if we have other issues they can resolve for us.

Description of Work: Had AC/heating system serviced. System checked for performance. Only problem found was with the blower. Blower was pulled and cleaned. I was advised by service tech, Allen, to use a different air filter(a cheaper one) which would lower high return static.

Description of Work: They came out at night to see my unit. The next day they said I needed a new compressor plus other things and tried to charge me over $3,0000 for the issue. I had someone else come look at it and fix it for $124.00.

water heater repair
+ -1 moreThey completed the installation without even shutting off the water. They left after one hour and 20 minutes. I live in a condominium and all the water heater for the units are difficult to access as they are under the stairs. They did a great job.

Description of Work: AC quit working. Two techs came tot he house and found the problem rather quickly. Told me I had two options. Fix this or replace the system. Their reasoning was that the repair might not be cost effective to buying a new system. I had them fix the problem and quote a replacement of the faulty part. The price came back $1800 for the new part. I thought that was a little excessive. I have since found a company who would do the same repair for under $1000.

+ -1 moreOur tech was Roy and he came promptly on time. He listened to our concerns and got right to work. He was busy checking out and cleaning the system for over 2 hours. He recognized that our A/C unit also provides hydro heat and is connected to the Water Heater. Not all A/C techs have understood that in the past. He did a good job. We've had no water on the garage floor since. The unit is working better than ever. He answered all our questions. He didn't push us for any other work, although he did leave info on their annual maintenance plan (no pressure).
Description of Work: We had our A/C serviced, cleaned and checked out. Our drain pipe was blocked and leaking in the garage.

+ -1 moreI was very disappointed with the lack of response and willingness to promote good customer relations by Marlin James. I was very patient thru all of the delays. The reason I asked that the price be reduced is because: 1) motor bearings should last for decades not just months. 2) I was only 4 months past the 1 year labor warranty. 3) I feel that if the motor bearing failed this quickly, it probably was defective to begin with. 4) The installation of a new motor was a very simple and fast installation and took about 20 minutes. The 2 times the tech was at my house I was charged $225... which was reduced $50 by the use of 2 Angie's List coupons for a final tally of $175 for less than 1 hours time.
Description of Work: On April 9, 2010 I had my a/c system replaced by Marlin James at a cost of $5,673. In August of 2011 I heard a sound coming from the condenser fan motor on the unit outside my house, that indicated a bad bearing. On August 12, 2011 a tech from Marlin James came and checked the motor. The work performed was to listen to the motor and observe a heat discoloration on the motor that indicated a bad bearing. No disassembly was required and it took about 10 minutes time. I was charged $75 for this...but fortunately I had a $25 Angie's List coupon, which reduced the bill to $50 . I was told the cost of the motor was covered under warranty but not the labor and that it would be $150 to install the motor. They did not have a motor in stock and it would have to be ordered. On August 15th I called Marlin James and asked if they would discount the $150 installation cost of the new motor by the $50 which I paid for the initial inspection. The woman at Marlin James said she would ask the owner and call back. I did not receive a return call. On August 29, 2011 I called Marlin James to inquire about the status of my motor. I was told they would check and call me back. On August 30, Marlin James called and said the motor was in but it was damaged and a new one would be ordered, that it should be in by Sept. 1st and they would call me. I did not receive a call . On September 7th I called again and was told the motor was in. I again inquired if they would be willing to reduce the installation fee by the original $50 I paid. Again I was told that she would have to ask the owner and would call me back the next day. I did not receive a return call. On September 13th I called and she said she had called on Sept. 8th; however my "recent calls" on my phone showed no such call. Then she said the owner would not reduce the $150 charge but I could print and use another $25 Angie's List coupon. On Sept. 15th the new motor was installed and I was charged $150 but used the Angie's List coupon which reduced the total to $125. it took 30 minutes from the time he arrived until he pulled out of the driveway.

Unfortunately, they never showed for the 3 days of appointments that I had with them. If they didn't want to do the work I wish they would have just told me so I could have gotten someone else. They say they didn't get the calls, but I called them 3 times. I have a rental unit. The address given was to the rental unit not my home address on record.
Description of Work: I needed them to find my a.c. leak under a rental mobile home.

Description of Work: Our A/C went out upstairs Sunday night and called Marlin James on Monday. They had Gary come out that same afternoon and had our A/C up and running. He further diagnosed what was wrong and how much it would cost to fix it. He worked in the pouring rain and had a great attitude. He had to come back 2 more times due to the rains. We signed up for their twice a year maintenance program. Our A/C's are working great and our house feels great. We appreciated the professionalism and kindness of Marlin James. They seemed like they genuinely cared. Keep up the great work and don't cut corners......

+ -1 moreThey are not in my area. I ended up paying not just for my repair but also for getting their yearly service contract. I was really pleased with my experience. I liked that they came over here from out of their territory. They did charge me a little bit more for coming over here. Their fee was not very much for the actual service call itself. It was only $125.00. For replacing the part and actually doing a service call, it was dirt cheap. I didn't have to wait very long. The guy was here exactly when he said he was going to be. That's why I ended up getting the yearly service. They were pretty good.
Description of Work: Marlin James Air Conditioning & Heating came out and fixed my air-conditioning. They replaced a part that had blown out.

+ -1 moreWish I had called Marlin James first!!!!! Had a service contract that I had pre paid with a company that went out of business. A new company called me to say they were honoring the maitenance contracts of the company that went out of business. I was very satisfied with my original HVAC company so I scheduled a routine system maintenance with the new company. The technician was proffessional and curteous and wanted to bring to my attention a "slow" leak in my king valve. I asked if that was normal for a 6 year old unit and he said,that manufacturer had had this issue. He explained that it might be fine for years or go out all of the sudden. Two days after we had no airconditioning....coincidence? I checked their service lable for a telephone number where I noticed the "Angie's List" and "Better Business" logo. Suprise they are not listed on Angie's List and have no rating from the BBB. I called Marlin James and explained what happened and they sent a technician out the same day. The technician found that my suction line valve core was stuck open and my system was completley out of refrigerant!! (within 48 hours of the other companies routine maitenance check). The technician from Marlin James felt terribleabout what had happened. It cost me $655 to learn two very important lessons. Check Angie's List first! and from now on only use Matin James to maintain and service my HVAC.

+ -1 moreI called Marlin James at 6:30 am. They called back right away and scheduled a repairman, and he was here by 9 AM. He was clean, polite, and got right to it. He diagnosed and fixed it within an hour. It turned out to be a short in a wire in the compressor. He didn't try to scam me into buying a new compressor, he simply fixed it. I don't even think I he charged me for a new wire. I was so impressed I asked him for a service contract, and he hooked me right up.

He performed additional tests to make sure problem was correctly isolated. He also took time to explain to me the inner workings of unit to help me better understand what happened. And Coupon helped ease some of the cost. Well done

+ -1 moreTech was on time and professional. Found that a foam spacer had somehow worked its way loose and let two pipes rub together until a hole developed in one and freon escaped. Ended up needing five pounds of freon, and the hole had to be fixed. Freon was listed on the estimate at $40 per pound (x five pounds) for $200. Total bill was estimated at apx $750, so to me, that's $550 to solder a hole closed in one of the pipes. I know there's evacuating the system and other little things to do other than just soldering the hole that drives up the price a bit, but still, it seemed excessive to me, so I paid the inspection fee ($75?) and passed on the service. Used a neighbor recommended tech and got it done for under $400.
Description of Work: Checked the a/c condensing unit and gave me an estimate for the repair.
