Description of Work: We used First Class Moving Systems (North American Van Lines) to do a small move for my 88 year old dad from FL to CA. North American has a service for smaller moves called the Blue Line. Phil came to the house to assess what was going and gave me a price. He was very friendly, sympathetic and professional. Kristy was my contact person at First Class after that. She was great - answered my emails and phone calls promptly. She told me the movers would be at the house between 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. and they were there just a few minutes before 8:00. There were three of them and they got it done in no time. Justin tagged all our items with a number and corresponded it to an inventory list that he gave me a copy of. The Blue Line puts all your items into a big wooden "crate." The items arrived on time, exactly within the time frame we were given. We haven't opened the boxes yet, but I assume everything is still in one piece! I would recommend First Class Moving to anyone. It was a little pricey for a small move, but extremely smooth and stress-free - especially after reading all the horror stories online of other movers' experiences.

Description of Work: They were 4 hours late to the initial pick-up date of my items and they didn't inform me of their lateness until they were already 1 hour late. All of my items arrived in the UK, but they were extremely late wrt the target delivery date. They said 6-8 weeks, but the shipment actually arrived 11 weeks after pickup. They also charged me an additional $500 months after they picked up my items and when I was so desperate for my things that I didn't have much recourse to fight the charge. This was way off from the quote. They had the opportunity to inform me of the weight difference much further in advance and they didn't do it. Extremely unprofessional. They did a poor job of managing my expectations and of maintaining trust. Will not use again.

Description of Work: I moved from Tampa FLorida to Alexandria Virginia. They were prompt. I moved from a storage unit to a one bedroom high rise. They were careful with my items. I received everything 4 days later. They unloaded everything within 2 hours when they arrived in Virginia which was great because I had a flight scheduled for the afternoon. I did end up having a missing rug, broken Frame, and missing screw for my dresser mirror. Other than that the service was great. I recieved an honest quote. No suprise fees upon delivery. What I was quoted in tampa was exactly what I paid nothing more.

[Member name], I thank you for the honest review and we here at First Class appreciate the kind words and your business as well! However, you had time to file a claim with the company and I do not see that you had taken advantage of that at this time. I have sent a claim form to your email that we have on file and would be more than happy to assist you with the items that were damaged/missing. Please feel free to contact me at any time here in the office. My info is in my signature for you, however here is the office number 813.889.0308. Again thank you for the honest review and always make sure to call and let anyone involved with your move that you had issues with damage, loss, missing etc. You are entitled to file a claim, and that is what I am here for! Thank you for the review as well as your business! Regards, Dee Fete

Description of Work: We contracted with First Class Moving Systems to pack up and move several items from my deceased mother's condo up to our homes in the Chicago area. As executors of her estate, we had a detailed, itemized list with photos of all items to be moved. First Class has managed to either "lose" or damage the following items: "Lost": 18 out of 24 Waterford glasses, a Waterford lamp, 15 china serving pieces, fireplace implements with stand, a brass cauldron, a brass lamp, an end table, a plant stand, and a wall candle holder. Damaged: One liquor cabinet - breaking one door completely in half. I filed a claim on 11/18/11 but have not heard back from them - well over four weeks ago. These items represent more than 1/2 of the total items First Class was contracted to move for us. I have never had a moving company "misplace" over 1/2 of my move. In my opinion, this represents gross incompetence at best; at worst... Details: On November 11, 2011 Matt and his crew from First Class showed up on time at the condo in Florida. The condo was largely empty with the items to be moved well-organized. The crew cheerfully packed up lamps, china, crystal and a few pieces of furniture. My sister-in-law oversaw the packing and watched Matt, the foreman, personally pack up all of the Waterford glasses. As they were loading, my sister-in-law inquired as to why they did not have her check off the boxes as they were being placed on the truck. She also commented that the number of boxes looked light. Matt reassured her that everything had been packed and loaded, stated that they had to hustle to the next job, and quickly left. As they had relatively few items to pack up and load, the whole job took them approximately two hours. On October 16, a different crew arrived at my home in the Chicago area. They unloaded all of the furniture and boxes on the truck. I unpacked all of the boxes that night (there were only six) and realized to my horror that most of the crystal and china were missing. I made several phone calls to First Class, explaining that those missing items were intended to go to specific heirs and expressing my distress. The response I received was very unsatisfactory. They confirmed that the items did, indeed, appear to be missing and indifferently told me that legally, they had 120 days to respond. And I have not heard anything since. I strongly recommend that other Angie list members DO NOT use this mover. Thank you.

We had time constraints on unloading in a condo building, and First Class brought in extra people (without extra charge) to make sure it was completed on time. Their people were professional, courteous, and considerate of our needs, for example, in placing and replacing furniture in the new location to make sure we were satisfied. Sales rep/estimator was very professional and accurate, and the final cost, which was based primarily on time spent, came in slightly below his estimate. There was some minor damage which we noticed later, but we have come to expect that (or worse) in our moves.

Hard sold the moving insurance, much like a car rental agency. Offered "Three options". Go with their "standard" $0.60/pound replacement of any damaged goods, buy $350++ worth or insurance to assure 100% replacement cost, or "go with your own homeowner's insurance". None of the above are acceptable options. In my past experience, the movers have always taken 100% liability upon themselves when they took possession of my possessions. This is the only company that has tried to sell me a third-party (and very over-priced) add-on insurance for THEIR benefit. Estimate is $500 higher than other competing bids, and Dennis, while a nice guy, refused to reduce the estimate by the Angie's List 10% coupon when I specifically mentioned it after he printed-out the estimate. He told me he'd "already given a discount" but when pressed, specifically stated "No" that he had not,. and would not, include the promised 10% Angie's List coupon as a reduction. Game over.

Response from First Class Moving Systems Inc
We regret Member did not use our services and we are certainly concerned over his perception of our salesperson and our company as a whole. Member indicated in his post that our salesperson was trying to sell him insurance and "hard sold" this offering. Though we appreciate Member's concerns, we disagree that it's a bad thing for moving companies to try and sell valuation (we do not sell insurance and no mover is licensed to do so). Valuation is the process of estimating what something is worth. We simply ask our customers that want full replacement coverage to place a value (industry standard is $6.00 per lb) on their belongings (up to $250,000.00) and select a deductible ($0, $250 or $500) and we charge to assume full, replacement cost liability. All legitimate moving companies offer this service and our salespeson never offered Member insurance or valuation through a third party. Vanliner Insurance issues our cargo policy and we have an excellent claims ratio with them. Member said that "movers have always taken 100% liability upon themselves when they took possession of my possessions." This is simply not true as legitimate moving and storage companies offer the same levels of valuation: Released Value ($.60 cents per lb) for no charge or full coverage with $0, $250 or $500 deductible. That is standard across the board and there are no moving and storage service providers that offer this to consumers for free. The industry does not bundle this offering into its transportation rates as some customers simply do not want it. We feel it's always better to have the option either way, rather than simply charging for it and not allowing the customer to choose. Many unscrupuolous moving companies do not discuss valuation with their customers because they do not have insurance and do not want the customer to ask about it. Next, Member claimed that he was not offered the 10% discount we offer to Angie's List members. We double checked and our salesperson did include the discount in the quote, unfortunately we were still the highest estimate. However, without knowing who the competition was, we certainly will be higher than moving companies that are not full service; do not train their employees; carry the same amounts of insurance or use modern state-of-the-art equipment. We cannot compete with companies that do not implement the same policies or follow the same ethical guidelines. Furthermore, Member said our salesperson "padded the bill". Since we did not perform any service for Member, he probably means we "padded" the estimate yet this would not make much sense as our estimators are not only trained to be as accurate as possible, but to deliberately raise the price on a quote would likely preclude them from booking the job. This defies logic as most bad moving companies deliberately lower the quote, so for us to raise the quote on purpose would not make much sense. Most likely, the competitor(s) were under-estimating and Member took their word for it. That said, even if our quote was high, we only charge for the time and materials we use. If we quote 8 hours and the job only takes 6 hours, our customers only pay for 6 hours, so we're not sure why Member was upset about this. We apologize if Member did not understand our quote or we did not explain it thoroughly. We never received a call from Member, so we were unaware of any misunderstanding on his part, if he had called, we certainly would have taken the time to make him understand how our pricing works. Again, we are disappointed that Member did not use our services and we regret he felt that our salesperson was coercing him into purchasing valuation, but this is what our sales representatives are trained to do. We do not intend to make someone fell "pushed' into paying for any additional service, we simply want to offer everything that's available to them so they can make a calculated decision on which provider to use.

I retired from the Navy so we had to move several times. I was accustomed to the moving company doing everything. The entire procedure was conducted with my needs, concerns, and convenience given the highest priority. The estimator was very experienced, answering most of my questions before I asked them. He conducted a complete inventory, room by room, drawer by drawer. He made certain of my desires if there was any doubt. He explained how the estimate was reached, choices I had, etc. The movers arrived on time, quickly reviewed what was going to happen, and got to work. They clarified any question about an item to make sure it was done as I wanted. They made sure everything was packed securely and safely. Delivery went just as smoothly. It was about 50 yds. from the truck to the house, and it was still all done quickly, safely, and CHEERFULLY. As I said, all items were placed where I requested and items assembled as necessary. The entire process went smoothly. Every care was taken to prevent any damage (there was none!). The crew was courteous and professional in conduct and appearance. I recommend 1st Class Moving, especially for interstate moves, and will not hesitate to hire them if the need arises again.
Description of Work: Had to move furniture and other contents from 2 br apartment in Florida to Michigan. The estimator explained every step of the procedure. The estimate was done with great detail so there were no "cost adjustments" needed later. I had the company do all of the packing, disassemble tables etc., and loading. When the furniture was delivered to Michigan, I had the contents place in the appropriate room, and they assembled items as necessary. They even offered to unpack the boxes.

They were very professional and detailed in their estimate. They went over each item and discussed the condition of the furniture etc. They were the lowest priced company from the three we invited to bid. The United Van Lines contract driver was Doug Rolow and he called several days before the pick-up date and arranged to come a day early to pick-up items from our off-site storage unit. They also came to our condo and looked over the site to see what the job would entail the next day. They were unable to bring their van onto the development property and had to shuttle everything with a smaller truck. They were very careful and wrapped all items and handled everything with great care. In addition they explained everything they would do and what we could expect. The United Van Lines contract driver was Doug and Wendy Rolow and they had a helper with them named Travis. Very good, very friendly, and I would recommend them to anyone.

I am disappointed in this company. They called on Tuesday stating they would come to give me an appraisal of cost after I got home from work at 5:30. I received a call at 5 stating that they don't schedule anything after 3 PM & I could have 9:30 or 11 the following morning. I informed them that I don't have any time to take from work. They stated they'd call back & never did.

We were assured they had a large enough truck to handle our house move (4 br, 3 bath, 2 car garage), but it took two trips with their truck to move us out of our house. Delivery, about 2 weeks later took 2 truckloads. They broke several items, due to poor packing and abusive handling. Crew didn't finish packing until after dark, literally throwing the remaining non-breakable garage items into boxes. Upon delivery, crew didn't properly assemble legs to dining room table. I wouldn't hire this company again to move a dog house! I guess we got what we paid for. Other movers wanted about $5,000. President of the company became rude to us when we hand delivered our damage list. The Post Office couldn't deliver our damage list, because no one was available to sign for the letter! We received one lost item 6 months later; they claimed it was found in a corner of their warehouse! We were told all warehoused items are containerized to avoid loss. Our opinion: DO NOT HIRE THIS COMPANY!
