Mrs. Hamilton and I played phone tag for a couple of days but she didn't give up on me. (Of course I waited until the last millisecond to call). She visited our house and gave us an estimate for tileing two bathrooms. I was at first shocked that so much was involved. The $175 for four hours work didn't go far. I thought how hard can this be, these are small bathrooms. I had to get over the initial price shock and time shock. That's why I waited so long to make up my mind. I finally called her back and said I was ready to go ahead. They scheduled us for the following week. We bought the tile and they provided everything else. After Mr. Hamilton arrived we showed him around and left him to do the job. He is quiet, professional and polite. We paid with a check, thanked him, talked to him about regrouting the kitchen and said good-by.
Description of Work: The Hamiltons are a great pair to work with. Mrs. Hamilton did the appraisal cost and then waited until I was ready. We felt very safe leaving Mr. Hamilton in the house alone to do the work. He did work long the second day to finish up the chore and he didn't have to come back to our house for just a couple of hours. I would definately recommend them again. We are looking at having our kitchen tile regrouted and they will be our first call.

Mr. Hamilton and his wife were very nice, professional, and easy to work with. I felt safe and comfortable with him in my home. They had a family emergency which pushed the time frame back a few weeks, but for us it was a guest bathrooom so there wasn't a huge rush. Otherwise I have no complaints whatsoever. It has been over a year since the work was done and it has held up very nicely.
Description of Work: We had water behind our tile in the the bathroom shower. Mr. Hamilton tore out all the old tile and replaced it with tile I had purchased at Lowe's. He matched it with what was above (we only had to replace the bottom half of the tile down to the tub line). It looks very nice.

Although we did not have any work performed it was a good experience. I'm sorry but I can't remember her name, but the tile guru came out and did a great job of looking at the situation and providing options. The style of tile we have is older and she called several vendors, but nobody could match our existing tile so we held off on the work. If we have an area that we need a complete re-tiling, we will certainly look them up again.
Description of Work: Requested an estimate on replacing and extending some tile in the bath/bedroom area.

Overall I am happy with the work completed. I purchased a Big Deal for $175 for 4 hours of ceramic tile installation. This Big Deal was a $300 credit off the quoted price. I provided the tile and I prepared the subfloor/cement board. Diane quote the job at $550 (after the $300 credit) for materials (thinset/masttic and grout) and labor. Note, the subfloor was not yet in when Diane provided the quote. She clearly said Alan would level the floor with the thinset - "don't worry about it, Alan has done this a lot." When Alan showed up, he said the floor was not level and the floor had to be "floated." After a call from Diane, she quote an extra $300 to float the floor for extra materials and labor. I agreed to keep the job moving along. We went out of town and Alan worked on the job. When I mentioned on wanted a black grout, Diane explained it would be $35 more. There was no mention of an additional charge for a "special" grout color. I agreed again, since my wife really wanted the black grout. When I returned home an looked at the work, there were about 30 gaps (1/8" to 3/8") in the grout. I called Alan back and he fixed all the gaps in the grout. He explained the gaps were caused by "bubbles" during installation. I ended up paying $1060 ($175 Big Deal and $885 after complete). Again, I am pleased with the work, but I was let down with an inaccurate quote ($335 more than original $550 quote (or 60% increase)) and did not expect a follow up visit for a company in business for so many years.

Response from Alan Hamilton Ceramic
The total amount paid was $710. The original proposal for the back splash was $750 but I gave her a credit of $87, half the $175 coupon already applied to the bath repair which brought it down to $663. The grout and tile repair was done with a Big Deal coupon of $175. We absorbed the cost of the grout but charged for the stain as indicated (plus materials) on the coupon. That was $47. The total was $710 and that is what she paid. I did have to move her date once because we are very small and Alan does all the work himself so when one job runs over a little, it moves everyone forward. She didn't have a problem with that at the time. I quoted this in January and she wanted the work done in June. This is the first indication that she wanted more tile installed and we certainly would have done that had we knew. Most people I have dealt with are very happy to have the owner only working in their home instead of a "crew" and understand the drawbacks with that.

I was originally looking for someone to fix some tiles where tiles were buckling. I found Alan Hamiltion Ceramics on Angies List. Diana Hamilton came out for the estimate. It turned out the Shower Pan needed to be replaced. As work commenced, it was discovered there was much more damage from the work of the original builders. After evaluatiing the damage and cost to fix it properly, I proceeded with the work to fix the problems. The work done by Alan Hamiliton was/is beatiful.
Description of Work: Overall I had a good experience. Alan Hamilton was trustworthy and I felt comfortable with him working in my home. I would definitely call them again. A shower pan was replaced. All tile in the shower and around the garden tub had to be replaced. The dry wall in the shower was replaced.

I had to install some trim and other work to finish the job to cover up chips out of the cut corner tiles. The bottom was granite. He left the edge of granite exposed. It was a bad experience overall. What he did was ok, it just felt unfinished.

I am very sorry the project was not what the customer had expected. This report is the first knowledge I have of the problem as we strive to be sure our customers are happy and totally satisfied with their job. We did this several months ago and had we known, would have been happy to install any trim or do any service work. There were 4 alcoves. At the time of the estimate we discussed a trim piece to cover the cut edges but that is not what they wanted. The tile was an imported glass and very brittle so the cut edges will most likely chip hence the need for a trim. Also, I personally do not like the tile to dead end to the wall. The granite pieces were 18x18 granite tiles and that cannot be polished like granite stone. In the tall alcove, the tile stops before the wall edge, once again, without a trim. The cuts had to be made in the center because there needed to be at least a finished edge on the outside. I have posted pictures of the alcoves on our profile page. I agree that they look unfinished but that was the way they wanted it done. If we had known we would certainly have done whatever was required to make them love their project.

I felt the work was a bit sloppy: For instance, where the tile on the walls meet the ceiling, there was space (the ceiling board didn't meet the wall board) and this was not corrected before tiling. I did ask Alan to come back to rectify the problem and he promptly come, adding more grout. There is now a very large grout line, which is not aesthetically pleasing (and possible poses a water leak issue). I also feel the recessed shelves are not even. No caulking was done after the tile work, although I don't know if that is normally part of the job. On the plus side, Alan's wife, Debbie, came out to give an estimate. She was very kind and knowledgeable, and their prices were the lowest I found. Alan was also very nice and trustworthy in my home.
Description of Work: Install new wallboard and ceramic tile for new bathtub installation. Tiled walls included the 3 sides of the bathtub from rim of tub to ceiling. Also included 2 recessed shelves. Price included all setting materials, mortar, and grout. I provided the tile.

Everything was excellent. We had no problems and they always showed up on time. They were always courteous. They are one of the best companies we have ever used. They had to replace all work done by a previous contractor who is now out of business. I would recommend them to anybody.
Description of Work: They tore out the entire bathroom floor and rebuilt our shower. They installed several bars so that the shower would be more accessible for my mother-in-law. They put in a seat in the shower.
Description of Work: Alan replaced the dual drywall boards with the proper boards for shower walls. He installed new shower tiles. He installed a new shower face plate and handle. He installed a new shower arm. He took out the old shower enclosure and disposed of it. He removed the vinyl flooring and disposed of it. He installed floor tiling and even reseated the toilet.

Diane and Alan are a great team. Diane met with us to go over the project scope and provided an estimate on-the-spot. The job was scheduled and Alan performed the work. Diane is great with email schedule confirmations! Alan performed the work and was fabulous. He was always on time, very quiet, did excellent cleanup each day and final cleanup both inside and outside where the tile saw was located. We are very pleased with the installation work! We highly recommend this team for any tile project. We already have a second project being scheduled!

We are very happy with the job Alan Hamilton did in our home. He removed the old outdated tile from the walk-in shower in our master bedroom bathroom and the tub/shower in our guest bathroom. He than re-tiled both bathrooms (including the floor) He started each day about 9:30 and would work consistently until 4:00 or 4:30. He was very considerate of our home, being careful not to mar the walls or track debris throughout the house. He ended each day by sweeping up after himself and making sure everything was just as he had found it that morning. While Mr. Hamilton was working in my house, there were a few occasions I would need to run an errand leaving him alone in the house. I felt very comfortable doing this and never gave it a second thought . Prior to the re-tiling, Diane Hamilton (Mr. Hamilton's wife), came to my house, looked at what we wanted done and gave me a written estimate. The estimate was very close (the difference in the estimate and the completed project was due to a change I made after the written estimate was done). I was given a list of tile stores/showrooms in my area, I picked out the tile at one of the showrooms, Mr. Hamilton picked up the tile and delivered it to my house, the next day he started the job. He was very precise in his measuring, cutting and placing of each tile, and made sure everything looked good. He made suggestions based on his knowledge from several years experience and expertise, he also answered all my questions (no matter how dumb they seem to be). I had a couple of minor details that needed to be corrected after he had finished the job. I contacted him and explain the problem, he came over in a timely fashion, looked at the area and corrected the problem. I now have two bathrooms that I enjoy people seeing instead of trying to hide them.

His wife, Diane, first came out to give an estimate for the job. Diane was outstanding! She was absolutely delightful to work with and explained everything in detail that would be done before giving me a written estimate. While a couple other companies said they would take up two rows and "inject" adhesive under the third row (they were hard to get to), Alan Hamilton Ceramics was the only company to offer to take up all three rows and repair/replace all tiles. On the day of the job, Alan called a half-hour before the scheduled time and told me he was on his way. He showed up on time and ready to work. He pried up the existing tile and sanded the ones that could be saved and re-used. As mentioned, he took up all of the tiles for three rows, sanded the ones that could be saved (and he did save the majority!), prepared the floor for the mortar, and cut tiles that had to be cut for a better fit. He was able to re-use the majority of the tile that was on the floor and re-installed them. After the installation, he re-grouted and cleaned up accordingly. The tile job was outstanding! The installation looked better than new and dried relatively quickly. Alan was very conscientious, worked very hard, and did an outstanding job with the laundry room. When it comes time to re-do the baths and the kitchen, I will definitely call Alan Hamilton Ceramics again!
Description of Work: Replaced three rows of ceramic tile in laundry room that was either cracked or loose/hollow (39 tiles - 13"X13"). Also, he repaired a few tiles in the main hallway that he noticed were loose. {Note: We had the replacement tile so no tile had to be purchased.}

They were great and personable. I was comfortable with them. The only thing was that it took forever to get him here. They lost somebody. I think I got the bid in June and we got it done in November. Part of that was my fault. We had a family charity so I pushed it back. When I called them it was 8 weeks before they could come. Once he was here, it took 2 days in a row and it was done. It was just getting him here. She came for the consult right away. They just kept apologizing because they had lost somebody and they were short-handed. It was a husband and wife team. They were really nice. I was here by myself with him and was comfortable because his wife had been here. It wasn't creepy at all. She was really helpful. The water had gotten behind the tiles because it hadn't been grouted well enough. We are in a new home. They just took the bottom 3 rows off and she gave me the name of some other tile which I didn't even know about. They gave me their website to look at examples of what they were talking about. She gave me the people that they used, but they were a more high-end place, so I just went to a home improvement store. They were fine with that. It was for a guest bath and nobody goes in there except for guests twice a year. It was fine and they didn't care at all. I picked out the cheapest ones I could find and it looks great.

Diane Hamilton, Alan's wife, was a great resource. She pointed me in the direction of where I could find the type of tile I was searching for. She provided a list of tile stores where they recommend that you look for tile. She was wonderful and kept insisting that I not settle and find exactly what I was looking for. After I finally found the tile, I called her and Alan began working. He is very detail oriented and methodical. The tile looks perfect -- not a tile or grout line out of line. Alan is a perfectionist and it shows. He was very professional, hard working and pleasant. I intend to hire him again for my future tile needs.

The job went smoothly. Alan was very nice and professional. He was very patient and understanding as I tend to ask many questions. I appreciated his patience tremendously! He started the job on 8/9 and finished it on 8/12 as planned. He removed the old shower floor and approx 2 rows of wall tile. He then rebuilt the shower floor and re-tiled and grouted it. It looks fine and are happy with the results. The Friday after he completed the job and we paid him I noticed that about 3 of the floor tiles were raised higher on one edge than the others which was uncomfortable to step on. We called him up and he came back out that afternoon and agreed that they needed to be reset. So, he pulled them up and reset them. It is fine now.

It would be difficult to find a more agreeable person to work with and he was tested by my wife's close attention and questions on every aspect of the work. We have used Alan previously in a larger job ($7,200) for the replacement and installation of new ceramic tile in our kitchen, dining room, entry and bath in 2006. His excellent work at that time convinced us all of our tile work would go to Alan.
Description of Work: We had granite counter tops installed by another contractor and called Alan to install back splash tiles we had selected. We received a visit and quote within 2 days and Alan did the installation the following week. He worked with us as to how the different tiles should be laid out for the best effect and very patiently factored in the suggestions my wife (the decorator) made as she closely followed his work. Tile Installation was completed on day 1, grouting on day 2, and final sealing on day 3. As always, Alan was very good about cleaning up,

Alan and Diane were both very professional, courteous, and ready to get the job done correctly. When Alan arrived the first day, he came in with all his tools, dropcloths (for the floors) and got started. He was very thorough, doing everything precisely the way it should be done--not cutting any corners--and showing me why there was a problem in the first place. After each day's work, Alan was very careful to clean up his messes. He even went as far as sweeping my steps with a broom. I would use Alan Hamilton again for any projects I have dealing with ceramic tile.

Alan did an acceptable job on the floor tiles and tiles on the walls around the tub. However, he chipped the tub during the demolition of the old tiles around the tub. He did an unacceptable job with the caulking between the ceiling and the tiled wall and along the vertical where the wall tiles meet the painted wall. When we called to report that changes needed to made, they were not very cooperative in arranging a time to return. They said they could not return until over a week and only on Saturday. So we would have had to wait two weeks to correct these things. Our painter corrected these problems before he was able to paint the room. I would not use Alan Hamilton again.
Description of Work: Tiled the bathroom floor and wall around tub. They were very cooperative in adjusting their work schedule to meet our renovation schedule. They were quick to respond to a request for an estimate and provided an excellent portfolio.

Response from Alan Hamilton Ceramic
This is in response to the customers report regarding our company and the rest of the details. First of all, we always cover the tub with quilts and tarps and take every precaution available to avoid a problem like a chip. Alan brought the customer into the bathroom and showed him the small chip and told him we would have it repaired. This is not the first time such a thing has happened in our 40 years.Sometimes it is unavoidable. It is a stamped steel tub with very thin glaze that had been patched twice before and the customer said not to worry about it because they were going to have it re-glazed. He thanked Alan for showing him the chip and being up front about it. So at the customers direction,we did not repair it. I tried to schedule addressing his concerns about the caulking for the Saturday, Feb 21. the day he called. He declined stating his handyman was working in there that day and we could not be in the bathroom. The handyman was gone to get paint at that time and there really was no reason we couldn't recaulk that day.It would only have taken about 45 minutes .The customer was going out of town on the following Tueday or Wednesday and the return date was not yet confirmed. That is why he set the next appointment two weeks later. He called before he went out of town and said his handyman that could only work weekends had re-caulked and he cancelled our service call. This customer was in charge of everything that transpired and we simply tried to accommodate him. When he and his wife gave us the check, I believe on the 18th, they both said they were very happy with the way the bathroom turned out and the job looked great. I am sorry the customer feels the way he does now but we made every attempt to address his concerns quickly. 99% of our previous customers would say the same thing, Angies List customers or not. Our excellent rating with Angie and our realtionship with the Better Business Bureau and local distributors speaks for itself. I furnished the customer with 3 references not related to Angie's List and there are more on our website. After working in our area over 42 years, we could not continue if we teated our customers like this customer describes.

It turned out a mess. He misled us into believing he could replace the tile without creating much dust. Well, he did that by NOT REMOVING THE CLUE ALREADY ON THE FLOOR. So the tiles were placed at weird angles and heights. He didn't even use spacers to properly space the tiles apart. In the end it looked like an ameteur job.
